Efficient NIR to NIR up-conversion in LiYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ micro-octahedrons by modified hydrothermal method

Weichang Li,Qiang He,Jixi Xu,Chongyun Shao,Shiyu Sun,Shaohua Fan,Lili Hu

The efficient NIR-to-NIR upconverter of LiYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ (simplified as LYF:Yb,Tm) was synthesized by a modified hydrothermal method in this work. The synthesized LYF:Yb,Tm has well controlled morphology of monodisperse micrometer sized octahedrons. XRD pattern confirms its pure tetragonal LiYF 4 structure. The LYF:Yb,Tm exhibits a dominating NIR UC emission at ~793 nm along with relative weak blue and red UC emissions under 976 nm LD excitation. The optimal concentrations of Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ ions for NIR up-conversion (UC) emission are 20 mol% and 0.6 mol%, respectively. The internal UC quantum yield (IUCQY) of this LYF:Yb,Tm in NIR band is tested to be 5.1% at 959 nm LD excitation power density (PD) of 120 W/cm 2 . The UC emission mechanism is discussed based on UC fluorescent behaviors of Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ . The results of fluorescent labeling indicate its potential applications in fluorescent markers, solar cells and 3D flat panel displays .

Alkyl Chain Modification is Used to Improve the Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Performance of D-A-D Conjugated Small Molecules

Lu-Ping Chen,Zhen Zhang,Wang-Quan Zhang,Hai-Lin Cong,You-Qing Shen,Bing Yu

Malignant tumor is one of the most important causes of death in the world today. At present, the successful cure cases of tumor patients are mainly due to the timely treatment of tumors. Therefore, it has become one of the urgent problems for human beings to find tumors as soon as possible and how to completely eradicate them. The technology of simultaneous imaging and treatment through photoinitiation is a promising strategy to fight cancer. In the previous research, we developed a new small molecule p-QM2AF for photothermal therapy, but the low fluorescence efficiency (QY) in the NIR-II range made it necessary to modify it. In this paper, we obtained better imaging and photothermal conversion performance by grafting two 9- methylene nonadecanes onto the p-QM2AF sub-receptor.

Antibody-conjugated gold nanoparticles as nanotransducers for second near-infrared photo-stimulation of neurons in rats

Liu Jiansheng,Li Jiajia,Zhang Shu,Ding Mengbin,Yu Ningyue,Li Jingchao,Wang Xiuhui,Li Zhaohui

Infrared neural stimulation with the assistance of photothermal transducers holds great promise as a mini-invasive neural modulation modality. Optical nanoparticles with the absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) window have emerged as excellent photothermal transducers due to their good biocompatibility, surface modifiability, and tunable optical absorption. However, poor activation efficiency and limited stimulation depth are main predicaments encountered in the neural stimulation mediated by these nanoparticles. In this study, we prepared a targeted polydopamine (PDA)-coated gold (Au) nanoparticles with specific binding to thermo-sensitive ion channel as nanotransducers for second near-infrared (NIR-II) photo-stimulation of neurons in rats. The targeted Au nanoparticles were constructed via conjugation of anti-TRPV1 antibody with PEGylated PDA-coated Au nanoparticles and thus exhibited potent photothermal performance property in the second NIR (NIR-II) window and converted NIR-II light to heat to rapidly activate Ca2+ influx of neurons in vitro. Furthermore, wireless photothermal stimulation of neurons in living rat successfully evoke excitation in neurons in the targeted brain region as deep as 5 mm beneath cortex. This study thus demonstrates a remote-controlled strategy for neuromodulation using photothermal nanotransducers.

NIR-I Excitable and NIR-II Emissive Cr, Yb, Co-Doped Cs2NaScCl6 Double Perovskite Halides for Biodetection

Ting Zhang,Xiaoqian Zhang,Qinan Mao,Fangyi Zhao,Heyi Yang,Xinyue Li,Jiasong Zhong

Lanthanide doping has been instrumental in tuning the emissions of double perovskite halides (DPHs) into the near-infrared (NIR) region. However, the limited penetration depth of UV excitation and typically low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these materials restrict their utility in biomedical applications. In this paper, Cr3+-doped lead-free DPHs (Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+) have been explored, featuring a broadband NIR emission spanning 800–1300 nm and an impressive PLQY of 76.9%. Oriented toward biological applications, we employ Yb3+ as a codopant to be introduced into Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+. The novel Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ crystal powder displays a red-shifted emission (peaking at 995 nm) with a remarkably narrower full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 51 nm. Importantly, the efficient energy transfer between Cr3+ and Yb3+ enables Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ to maintain a PLQY of 46.1% upon 780 nm excitation. Leveraging its NIR-I excitable and NIR-II emissive properties, Cs2NaScCl6:Cr3+,Yb3+ presents great potential in biodetection and bioimaging applications. Its superior energy transfer efficiency, high PLQY, and favorable spectral characteristics position this material as a promising candidate for advanced biomedical techniques requiring deep tissue penetration and high imaging contrast.

2,6-Pyridinedicarboxylic Acid Covalently Bound Polydopamine for Enhanced Tumor Photothermal Therapy in NIR-I and NIR-II

Xingxing Gao,Jingjing Li,Xiaoxu Li,Xing Yin,Shunze Cao,Ximing Pu,Juan Wang,Xiaoming Liao,Zhongbing Huang,Guangfu Yin

Polydopamine (PDA) possesses potential as a photothermal agent for tumor treatment owing to its photothermal capacity, chemical modifiability, excellent biocompatibility, and selective biodegradability. However, weak near-infrared (NIR) light absorption seriously hinders its actual utilization, especially in NIR-II. This study presents a novel molecularly modified PDA with remarkably increased NIR absorption and remarkably enhanced photothermal conversion capacity in both NIR-I and NIR-II. Dopamine monomers are covalently bound with elaborately selected 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) through an amidation reaction and then undergo an oxidative polymerization to form DPA-doped PDA nanoparticles (DPA-PDA NPs). By constructing donor–acceptor pairs and extending the conjugation length of molecular units, the energy band gap of DPA-PDA between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is diminished from 0.77 to 0.45 eV, facilitating the electron low-energy transition. Meanwhile, the content of carbon-centered free radicals is obviously raised via suppressing their dimerization and quenching by the conjugation effect and steric hindrance effect, where the strengthened electron spin and vibration may promote charge and energy transfers, increasing and accelerating the excited electron nonradiative decay. As a result, the DPA-PDA NPs exhibit the enhanced NIR light absorption (196 and 205% over PDA) and much higher photothermal conversion efficiency (1.4 and 2.1 times that of PDA) under 808 and 1064 nm irradiation, respectively, achieving more effective tumor cells inhibition in vitro and tumor ablation in vivo. Interestingly, photothermal therapies with DPA-PDA for tumor-bearing mice emerge with higher tumor elimination (nearly 100%) under 1064 nm irradiation than that under 808 nm irradiation (94.3%), without recurrence within 20 days, which is attributed to both the enhanced photothermal capacity of DPA-PDA and the stronger tissue penetration ability of NIR-II. This design provides a new option to enhance the photothermal capacity of polydopamine as an applicative photothermal agent for tumor therapy.

Single-shot X-ray and near-infrared (NIR) dual-mode fusion imaging based on bifunctional NIR scintillators

Ran Peng,Yang Lurong,Hui Juan,Su Yirong,Chen Zeng,Zhu Haiming,Kuang Cuifang,Liu Xu,(Michael) Yang Yang

X-ray and near-infrared (NIR) imaging are two well-established noninvasive imaging techniques, whose fusion often delineates a more complementary view of the subject. In this study, we introduce an innovative dual-mode imaging approach using a NIR scintillator, functioning both as a conventional scintillator for X-ray imaging and as a light source for NIR imaging. Our method facilitates the concurrent acquisition and registration of X-ray and NIR images in a single X-ray shot, eliminating the need for additional hardware beyond that of a standard X-ray imaging system. We have successfully synthesized an ytterbium-doped perovskite NIR scintillator using a water-based scalable process, which exhibits a pronounced scintillation emission at 980 nm, suggesting the presence of a potential quantum cutting effect. The experimental results underscore the enhanced capabilities in visualizing features typically elusive in standard X-ray images, such as the vascular network in a human palm. Besides, our method can effectively separate the X-ray and NIR signals, which is a common issue with recently developed multi-band detectors that suffer from superimposed electrical signals. This separation is achieved by designing a NIR-Visible dual-band scintillator that channels the X-ray and NIR characteristics into distinct emission pathways, thus avoiding any potential interference between the two imaging modalities. This study presents a novel strategy for harnessing the synergistic information from X-ray and NIR photons, enabled by the simple yet effective design of a NIR X-ray scintillator. This advancement might hold the potential to broaden the application scope of conventional X-ray imaging, enhancing its diagnostic and analytical capabilities.

Enhanced NIR-NIR luminescence from CaWO4: Nd3+/Yb3+ phosphors by Li+ codoping for thermometry and optical heating

Wei Xu,Yuwei Hu,Longjiang Zheng,Zhiguo Zhang,Wenwu Cao,Hailong Liu,Xijun Wu

Rare earth ions doped luminescent materials have demonstrated their potentiality as sensitive thermometers with good accuracy and high spatial resolution. Nevertheless, low luminescence efficiency, especially at high temperature, still limits the development of this thermometry technique. Here, Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ codoped CaWO 4 phosphors were synthesized using high temperature solid-state method, and Li + ions were introduced aiming to improve the near-infrared (NIR) emissions from Nd 3+ in the spectral range of 725–950 nm. The influence of Li + codoping on the structure and NIR luminescence in CaWO 4 : Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ when excited by a 980 nm laser diode was investigated. NIR-NIR emissions from Li + codoped samples are successfully strengthened compared with that without Li + ions, which is mainly attributed to the distortion of the crystal structure and the increase of crystalline size by Li + . The optical temperature sensing behavior of NIR luminescence from Nd 3+ was studied based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR). Assisted by Li + ions, the NIR-NIR emissions are observed to be effectively enhanced with the increment of temperature. And a new pair of thermally coupled levels in Nd 3+ ions with excellent thermometry characteristics is explored, through which superior measurement sensitivity as well as accuracy could be achieved. In addition, light-induced temperature rise was realized in the phosphors, which makes CaWO 4 : Nd 3+ /Yb 3+ /Li + excellent candidate for luminescence thermometry and optical heaters.

Double-Site Occupation Triggered Broadband and Tunable NIR-I and NIR-II Luminescence in AlNbO4:Cr3+ Phosphors

Kuangnan Lyu,Gaochao Liu,Maxim S. Molokeev,Zhiguo Xia

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are desired for optoelectronic and biomedical applications, while the development of target broadband NIR phosphors still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a kind of Cr 3+ -doped AlNbO 4 phosphors with a broad NIR emission ranging from 650 to 1400 nm under 450 nm excitation are reported. A giant red-shift emission peak from 866 to 1020 nm together with broadened full width at half-maximum of 320 nm is achieved simply by varying the doped Cr 3+ concentrations. Structural and spectroscopy analysis demonstrate that a concentration-dependent site-occupation of Cr 3+ emitters in different Al 3+ sites is responsible for the tunable NIR luminescence. The as-fabricated NIR pc-LED based on optimized AlNbO 4 :Cr 3+ phosphor exhibits great potential in night-vision applications. This work provides a novel design principle on the Cr 3+ -doped AlNbO 4 phosphor with tunable broadband luminescence from NIR-I to NIR-II, and these materials can be employed in NIR spectroscopy applications.

Laser-driven NIR light source based on MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film for NIR spectroscopy application

Simin Gu,Bomei Liu,Shuaichen Si,Jing Wang

Laser-driven lighting technology is a remarkable innovation in the field of solid-state lighting. High-efficiency white light sources have been commercially produced, but laser-driven near-infrared (NIR) light source has not yet been captured, which hindered the numerous optoelectronic applications such as NIR spectroscopy and imaging techniques. Inspired by the observation that laser-driven lighting could break the limited power density and achieve effective output optical power density under higher incident optical power density, here, a novel NIR MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film was prepared and combined on the sapphire substrate to fabricate laser-driven NIR light source. The results show that laser-driven NIR light source based on blue laser and MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film combination could achieve a NIR output optical power density of 5.3 mW mm−2, which is 5 times higher than LED-driven NIR light source based on the same MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film. Finally, we successfully demonstrated the potential applications of the as-fabricated laser-driven NIR light source in the field of night vision and high-penetration imaging. This finding provides an approach to achieving high-performance NIR light sources thereby opening up a new avenue for the exploration of NIR spectroscopy technology.

pH and near-infrared light dual-stimuli responsive drug delivery using DNA-conjugated gold nanorods for effective treatment of multidrug resistant cancer cells

Wenjun Zhang,Feihu Wang,Yun Wang,Jining Wang,Yanna Yu,Shengrong Guo,Rongjun Chen,Dejian Zhou

A thiolated pH-responsive DNA conjugated gold nanorod (GNR) was developed as a multifunctional nanocarrier for targeted, pH-and near infrared (NIR) radiation dual-stimuli triggered drug delivery. It was further passivated by a thiolated poly(ethylene glycol)-biotin to improve its cancer targeting ability by specific binding to cancer cell over-expressed biotin receptors. Doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used clinical anticancer drug , was conveniently loaded into nanocarrier by intercalating inside the double-stranded pH-responsive DNAs on the GNR surface to complete the construction of the multifunctional nanomedicine . The nanomedicine can rapidly and effectively release its DOX payload triggered by an acidic pH environment (pH   ~   5) and/or applying an 808   nm NIR laser radiation. Compared to free DOX, the biotin-modified nanomedicine displayed greatly increased cell uptake and significantly reduced drug efflux by model multidrug resistant (MDR) breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7/ADR). The application of NIR radiation further increased the DOX release and facilitated its nuclear accumulation. As a result, this new DNA-GNR based multifunctional nanomedicine exerted greatly increased potency (~   67 fold) against the MDR cancer cells over free DOX.

NIR afterglow nanosystem for photodynamic therapy

Bingxin Shu,Shubi Zhao,Yuling Zhang,Qinchao Sun,Zhen Huang

Within the milieu of immune dysfunction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a pivotal role in inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD), countering the dysregulated tumor microenvironment. However, the administration of ROS at indiscriminate dosages may provoke deleterious immune responses. Therefore, precise regulation of ROS production is crucial to achieve efficacious therapeutic outcomes. We engineered an innovative afterglow nanosystem which is capable of real-time monitoring of ROS levels. Our findings reveal that Ru/CYQ@CPPO exhibits a markedly enhanced and prolonged afterglow luminescence, coupled with superior singlet oxygen (O2) generation, compared to the commercially available indocyanine green (ICG). In vitro studies demonstrated that Ru/CYQ@CPPO exhibits remarkable efficacy in photodynamic therapy (PDT) under irradiation at a wavelength of 450 nm. Furthermore, a significant correlation (R2 = 0.987) was observed between the intensity of afterglow luminescence and the rate of cancer cell inhibition.

Ligand-Mediated Core Structure Engineering and Luminescence of Metal Nanoclusters: Tuning Emission from NIR-I to NIR-II

Jia-Wei Liu,Dan Li,Peng-Xu Lu,Tao-Xiao Wen,Yan-Ru Chen,Jian-Hua Jia,Ming-Liang Tong

Luminescent metal nanoclusters featuring near-infrared (NIR) emission hold promise for diverse applications. Although ligand engineering can modulate their NIR optical properties, separating the effects of single-ligand in dual-ligand systems remains challenging. In this study, we employed a controlled variable approach to prepare three structurally comparable silver-rich clusters-Ag11Cu3, Cu@Ag14-xCux, and Ag18. By maintaining a constant thiolate ligand and solely varying the phosphines, we elucidated the synergistic regulatory impacts of the ligands on the core configuration and excited-state dynamics. Structural and optical analyses reveal that the monodentate phosphine (TPP) stabilizes an Ag6@Ag5Cu3 core of the cluster Ag11Cu3, leading to NIR-I emission (720 nm) originating from mixed triplet state metal-centered and charge transfer transitions. In contrast, the bidentate phosphine (trans-dppe) facilitates the formation of a nested Ag6@Ag8@Ag4 core of the cluster Ag18, triggering NIR-II emission (1424 nm) associated with highly delocalized core-based excited states. Moreover, the spatial influence of the chiral bidentate phosphine ((S,S)-BDPP) can induce core-structural distortion, which promotes nonradiative decay and results in luminescence quenching of the cluster Cu@Ag14-xCux. This work clarifies the relation between the structure and luminescence properties of ligand-mediated metal clusters, offering valuable insights for the design of tailored NIR optical materials.
