Highly selective NO2 sensor based on Au/SnS2 nano-heterostructures via visible-light modulation

Jinyong Hu,Jiawei Zhang,Xing Liu,Hongyu Zhang,Xiong-Xiong Xue,Yong Zhang

The efficient monitoring of toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) reveals a great practical significance in terms of environmental protection and human health. Tin disulfide (SnS 2 ) has recently presented bright application prospects for the NO 2 detection owing to its unique physiochemical properties. Unfortunately, the pristine SnS 2 -based gas sensor suffers from inferior selectivity to NO 2 since the emerging cross-response over interfering gases (especially to NH 3 ) at room temperature. Herein, a room-temperature-operated gas-sensitive device based on Au nanoparticles decorated SnS 2 nanosheet was proposed for the highly selective detection towards NO 2 by exploiting visible-light modulation. Benefited from the electronic sensitization and chemical sensitization of Au nanoparticles, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor presented a visibly enhanced response toward 1 ppm NO 2 compared with pristine SnS 2 gas sensor, while its selectivity to NO 2 over NH 3 only increased by 35%. Further, through effectively modulating the adsorption and reaction behavior of gas molecules by introducing visible-light excitation, the Au/SnS 2 gas sensor manifested an excellent selectivity with 130% gain in detecting 1 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, endowed the robust repeatability and reliable long-term stability. This work thus demonstrates that the visible-light modulation can serve as a promising technique for exploiting highly selective gas-sensitive devices operating at room temperature.

A mixed-potential-type NO2 sensor based on a layered-structure Bi2W2O9 sensing electrode

Wu Lianlian,Xia Jinfeng,Wu Jian,Li Qiang

Layered-structure Bi 2 W 2 O 9 powders synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction and treated by ball milling have been used to create an electrode for a mixed-potential-type NO 2 sensor with yttria-stabilized zirconia as an oxygen ion conductor. This sensor was found to provide good sensitivity to NO 2 at 500 °C, thanks to the grain refinement induced by ball milling. The electromotive force generated was linear to the logarithm of NO 2 concentration in the range of 30–500 ppm, with analysis of the impedance spectroscopy revealing a similar linear correlation between the conductance of the electrode and the logarithm of NO 2 concentration. The influence of CO 2 was also examined and found to have little effect on the sensitivity of the sensor.

Mesoporous WN/WO3-Composite Nanosheets for the Chemiresistive Detection of NO2 at Room Temperature

Fengdong Qu,Bo He,Rohiverth Guarecuco,Minghui Yang

Composite materials, which can optimally use the advantages of different materials, have been studied extensively. Herein, hybrid tungsten nitride and oxide (WN/WO3) composites were prepared through a simple aqueous solution route followed by nitriding in NH3, for application as novel sensing materials. We found that the introduction of WN can improve the electrical properties of the composites, thus improving the gas sensing properties of the composites when compared with bare WO3. The highest sensing response was up to 21.3 for 100 ppb NO2with a fast response time of ~50 s at room temperature, and the low detection limit was 1.28 ppb, which is far below the level that is immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) values (NO2: 20 ppm) defined by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). In addition, the composites successfully lower the optimum temperature of WO3from 300 °C to room temperature, and the composites-based sensor presents good long-term stability for NO2of 100 ppb. Furthermore, a possible sensing mechanism is proposed.Keywords:WN/WO3composite;nanosheets;gas sensor;NO2;room temperature

Studies on QCM-type NO2 gas sensor based on graphene composites at room temperature

Qi Pengjia,Wang Ziying,Wang Rui,Xu Yinan,Zhang Tong

Synthetic graphene composite was modified on a transducer of quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) to fabricate a gas sensor for low concentration nitrogen dioxide(NO 2 ) detection. The gas sensing properties of the QCM coated with SnO 2 -rGO and AgNPs-SnO 2 -rGO composites were investigated when exposing QCM to low NO 2 con-centration(2.05—20.5 mg/m 3 ) atmosphere at room temperature. The sensing performances of the QCM with AgNPs-SnO 2 -rGO composites were enhanced by the introduction of Ag nanoparticles, and the QCM modified with AgNPs-SnO 2 -rGO composites could detect NO 2 at room temperature.

Flexible Resistive Gas Sensor Based on Molybdenum Disulfide-Modified Polypyrrole for Trace NO2 Detection

Kuo Zhao,Yunbo Shi,Mingrui Cui,Bolun Tang,Canda Zheng,Qinglong Chen,Yuhan Hu

High sensitivity and selectivity and short response and recovery times are important for practical conductive polymer gas sensors. However, poor stability, poor selectivity, and long response times significantly limit the applicability of single-phase conducting polymers, such as polypyrrole (PPy). In this study, PPy/MoS2composite films were prepared via chemical polymerization and mechanical blending, and flexible thin-film resistive NO2sensors consisting of copper heating, fluorene polyester insulating, and PPy/MoS2sensing layers with a silver fork finger electrode were fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate using a flexible electronic printer. The PPy/MoS2composite films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. A home-built gas sensing test platform was built to determine the resistance changes in the composite thin-film sensor with temperature and gas concentration. The PPy/MoS2sensor exhibited better sensitivity, selectivity, and stability than a pure PPy sensor. Its response to 50 ppm NO2was 38% at 150 °C, i.e., 26% higher than that of the pure PPy sensor, and its selectivity and stability were also higher. The greater sensitivity was attributed to p–n heterojunction formation after MoS2doping and more gas adsorption sites. Thus, PPy/MoS2composite film sensors have good application prospects.

Key to unlocking NO2 sensing performance of monolayer Ti3C2Tx: Regulating OH/F functional groups

Zhaorui Zhang,Jiahao Liu,Haiying Du,Xufei Zhao,Haoming Sun,Minghui Yang,Jinkui Chu

A surface functional group modulation method was used to regulate the NO 2 sensing performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. The monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was synthesized from Ti 3 AlC 2 (MAX phase) by hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. Ar/O 2 hybrid plasma treatment was used to regulate the ratio of hydroxyl and fluorine functional groups (OH/ F) in the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface structure. Room-temperature (RH) NO 2 sensor based on modified Ti 3 C 2 T x was fabricated by the dip coating method. The modified Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor has a higher gas response (45.31 %) to 50 ppm NO 2 compared with the untreated Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor which shows more excellent sensitivity and linearity with the NO 2 concentration of 5–50 ppm. It is due to that the presence of the hydroxyl potential on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface well amplifies the electronic surface activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Concurrently, the modified electronic structure augments the adsorption propensity of Ti 3 C 2 T x for O 2 (2.26 |eV|) and NO 2 (3.24 |eV|), thereby improving the NO 2 sensing capability of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. These results demonstrate that Ti 3 C 2 T x with a high ratio of OH/ F functional groups has great potential in developing high-performance room temperature NO 2 sensors.

Mesoporous flower-like SnO2/GaN heterostructures for ppb-level NO2 detection at low temperature

Yaodan Zhang,Yuanchao Xie,Hongtao Wang,Dan Han,Shengbo Sang

It is essential to improve the detection response and maintain good stability of the gas sensor to be able to effectively monitor the ppb level harmful NO 2 gas. This work was dedicated to improving the sensing performance of NO 2 gas sensors by synthesizing flower-like structure SnO 2 /GaN composites using a combination of solvothermal and ultrasonic mixing method. The introduction of GaN increased the specific surface area of SnO 2 and provided more adsorption sites. Gas-sensitive test results showed that the SnO 2 /GaN composites exhibited excellent NO 2 response (42–1 ppm of NO 2 ) and lower detection limit (100 ppb) at lower operation temperature of 130 °C. In addition, the fluctuation in the initial resistance and response of the SnO 2 /GaN composites to 20 ppm of NO 2 within one month were small. The improved sensing performance was attributed to the unique flower-like structure of SnO 2 , the excellent thermodynamic stability of GaN and the heterogeneous interface of SnO 2 /GaN. This work provides a new design strategy for the development of highly sensitive ppb-level NO 2 sensors for atmospheric environmental monitoring.

Oxidation-enabled SnS conversion to two-dimensional porous SnO2 flakes towards NO2 gas sensing

Zhiwei Lu,Xiaoxiao Pei,Tingting Wang,Kewei Gu,Nan Yu,Mingsong Wang,Junli Wang

Tin dioxide (SnO2)-based electronic materials and gas sensors have attracted extensive attention from academia and industry. Herein we report the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) porous SnO2 flakes by thermal oxidation of 2D SnS flakes that serve as a self-sacrificial template. An oxidation-enabled, temperature-dependent matter conversion from SnS through three-phase SnS–SnS2–SnO2 (400 °C) and two-phase SnS2–SnO2 (600 °C) to pure-phase SnO2 (≥800 °C) is disclosed by means of combined XRD, TG-DSC and XPS studies. Meanwhile, the associated chemical reactions and the mass and heat changes during this solid-state conversion process are clarified. The as-prepared 2D SnO2 flakes exhibit structural porosity with tunable pore sizes and crystallite sizes/crystallinity, resulting in superior potential for NO2 sensing. At the optimized operating temperature of 200 °C, the prototype gas sensors made of porous SnO2 flakes show competitive sensing parameters in a broad NO2 concentration range of 50 ppb–10 ppm in terms of high response, faster response/recovery speeds, and good selectivity and stability. A sensing mechanism involving the adsorption and desorption of NO2/O2 molecules and the possible surface reactions is further rationalized for the SnO2 NO2 gas sensors.

The optimization of noble metal-modified MoSe2 nanoflowers gas sensor for hazardous NO2 detection

Ruitian Yan,Wenjie Zhao,Xiaoyang Duan,Taolin Yu,Weiping Cui,Weidong Quan,Yinsheng Chen,Dan Xu

Recently, MoSe 2 has exhibited limited development in the field of gas sensors owing to its low sensitivity and slow response/recovery. Herein, various noble metals (Pt, Pd, and Ag) were employed to dope the MoSe 2 nanoflower for enhancing its sensing capability to NO 2 . Compared to Ag and Pd modification, the Pt doped-MoSe 2 sensor displayed higher sensitivity, faster response rate, and better selectivity. Moreover, the 2.5 %Pt-MoSe 2 sensor had a large sensitivity of 2.45 to 32 ppm NO 2 , good repeatability, and a low detection limit of 0.1 ppm at 110 °C. The improvement in the gas-sensing response can be attributed to the spillover effect and catalytic sensitization of Pt. Moreover, the first principle calculations for the adsorption energy and density of states have confirmed that the MoSe 2 material can adsorb NO 2 more effectively by Pt doping. The Pt-decorated MoSe 2 material exhibits a promising prospect in the field of NO 2 gas detection.

Polyoxometalate-derived cubic/orthorhombic WO3 heterophase junction: High sensitivity for detecting ppb-level NO2

Liwei Zhang,Feng Li,Ying Yang,Dan Li,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong,Tianqi Wang

WO 3 is a representative metal oxide semiconductor gas sensing material with good selectivity and high sensitivity. However, high electron-hole recombination is a common drawback of WO 3 -based gas sensors. Here, we used silicotungstic acid (SiW 12 ), a classical Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) as precursor. After oxidation, WO 3 with cubic/orthorhombic mixed-phase were in-situ formed. Gas sensing performances of the WO 3 to ppb-level NO 2 gas were tested to explore whether the POM-derived WO 3 has advantage for gas sensor applications. Surprisingly, the c/o-WO 3 calcined at 800 °C exhibit a response value of 5.239 to 500 ppb NO 2 with very high selectivity, good long-term stability, repeatability and humidity resistance. By mechanism analysis, the bandgap positions of o-WO 3 and c-WO 3 are staggered, forming an internal electric field that favours electron-hole separation and improves the gas sensing performance. This work transforms POMs into two-phase mixed WO 3 , providing a new idea for the application of POMs as precursors in gas sensors.

Room temperature NO2 sensing with a ZIF-67/rGO nanocomposite: A highly sensitive approach

Liang Yin,Xiangqun Chu,Huimin Chen,Bin Liu,Pinhua Zhang,Lulu Du,Guangliang Cui,Li Lv

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a major atmospheric pollutant that poses a significant threat to human health, the development of efficient and accurate NO 2 gas sensors is crucial for air quality monitoring. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered ideal materials for gas sensing due to their exceptional tunability, large surface area, high porosity, and abundant active metal sites. However, the poor conductivity of MOFs limits their applications in electrochemical sensors. This study presents a ZIF-67/rGO nanocomposite synthesized by combining reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with ZIF-67 via a one-step solution method. Experimental results demonstrate that the ZIF-67/rGO nanocomposite sensor shows significant sensitivity to NO 2 gas at room temperature. At 5 ppm NO 2 , the response is approximately 13-fold higher than that of the pure rGO sensor. More importantly, the sensor achieves a detection limit as low as 0.5 ppm, with an ultra-fast response time of 15 s and recovery time of 40 s at room temperature. Additionally, the sensor exhibits excellent repeatability, long-term stability, and high selectivity for NO 2 . This study presents an effective strategy for accurate real-time detection of low concentration NO 2 gas and provides valuable insights for designing MOF-based hybrid sensors at room temperature.

Schiff-Base porous film for NO2 detection to Enable monitoring of solid propellant aging

Xueying Sun,Lina Xie,Wenlong Huo,Kaifeng Lin,Yulin Yang,Xuhui Chi,Chengyuan Zhao,Fengtao Zhang,Junzhuo Li,Debin Xia,Jian Zhang

In this study, an organic molecular probe containing an imine (C=N) linkage was synthesized and embedded in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) matrix to fabricate a porous optical film for NO 2 gas detection via solid-state UV spectroscopy. Upon exposure to NO 2 , the film exhibited significant spectral changes, with a detection limit as low as 26.45 ppm. Mechanistic investigations revealed that NO 2 induced non-covalent interactions with the probe, triggering structural reorganization and enhanced π-conjugation. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further supported these findings by confirming changes in electronic structure and energy levels. Additionally, preliminary tests demonstrated the feasibility of applying this probe film for aging detection of NEPE propellants, offering a promising non-destructive approach for monitoring propellant health.
