Co-adsorption performance of iodine and NOX in iodine exhaust gas by NH2-MIL-125

Xuanhao Liang,Guangyuan Chen,Hao Zhang,Ling Zhang,Tao Duan,Lin Zhu

Ti-based MOFs exhibit ultra-high stability in radioactive waste gases containing nitrogen oxides (NO X ) and are effective in capturing radioactive iodine. In this study, NH 2 -MIL-125 was synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method and its adsorption performance for iodine was investigated using batch adsorption experiments, the stability of materials was tested by simulating post-processing conditions. The results indicated that NH 2 -MIL-125 had a maximum iodine adsorption capacity of 1.61 g/g at 75 ℃ and reached adsorption equilibrium within 60 min, and the adsorption capacity of methyl iodine reached 776.9 mg/g. The material also exhibited excellent stability and iodine adsorption performance in the presence of NO X . After soaking in NO 2 for 24 h, its structure remained stable and the adsorption capacity for iodine remained at 231.5 mg/g. The excellent co-adsorption performance of NH 2 -MIL-125 on iodine and NO X was attributed to the synergistic effects of Ti-OH groups and amino functional groups. These findings provide a reference for the capture of radioactive iodine and also demonstrate the potential of NH 2 -MIL-125 for iodine capture during spent fuel reprocessing .

Effect of NOx and SO2 on the photooxidation of methylglyoxal: Implications in secondary aerosol formation

Shuyan Wang,Lin Du,Narcisse T. Tsona,Xiaotong Jiang,Bo You,Li Xu,Zhaomin Yang,Wenxing Wang

Methylglyoxal (CH 3 COCHO, MG), which is one of the most abundant α-dicarbonyl compounds in the atmosphere, has been reported as a major source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this work, the reaction of MG with hydroxyl radicals was studied in a 500 L smog chamber at (293 ± 3) K, atmospheric pressure, (18 ± 2)% relative humidity, and under different NO x and SO 2 . Particle size distribution was measured by using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and the results showed that the addition of SO 2 can promote SOA formation , while different NO x concentrations have different influences on SOA production. High NO x suppressed the SOA formation, whereas the particle mass concentration, particle number concentration and particle geometric mean diameter increased with the increasing NO x concentration at low NO x concentration in the presence of SO 2 . In addition, the products of the OH-initiated oxidation of MG and the functional groups of the particle phase in the MG/OH/SO 2 and MG/OH/NO x /SO 2 reaction systems were detected by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and attenuated total reflection fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis. Two products, glyoxylic acid and oxalic acid , were detected by GC-MS. The mechanism of the reaction of MG and OH radicals that follows two main pathways, H atom abstraction and hydration, is proposed. Evidence is provided for the formation of organic nitrates and organic sulfate in particle phase from IR spectra. Incorporation of NO x and SO 2 influence suggested that SOA formation from anthropogenic hydrocarbons may be more efficient in polluted environment.

Zr/CuOx catalysts derived from MOFs for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Kang Cheng,Yuting Hu,Tianyu Liu,Ting Cheng,Taotao Liu,Chengzhu Zhu

MOF derivative (Zr (0.9)/CuO x (400)) had excellent denitrification activity, N 2 selectivity and stability. • Systematically revealed the regulation mechanism of Zr doping on the Cu 2+ /Cu + ratio and acid balance. • Proved that Zr doping could act as sacrificial sites to greatly improve the H 2 O and SO 2 resistance of the catalyst. Zr/CuO x composite were synthesized by hot-solvent and calcination method using metal-organic framework (MOF) as the precursor, and were applied for selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). The effects of Zr/Cu molar ratio, calcination temperature and time on catalyst activity and the physicochemical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The results showed that Zr/CuO x composite revealed a favorable denitrification activity, stability and resistance to sulfur and water while Zr/Cu molar ratio was 0.9 and calcination temperature was 400 °C. When the NO concentration of 500 ppm and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 35,000 h -1 , NO conversion efficiency was achieved 100% and over 94% N 2 selectivity at 275–375 °C. In the presence of 100 ppm SO 2 and 10 vol% H 2 O, the NO conversion of Zr (0.9)/CuO x (400) approached 92%. The enhanced activity was attributed to a synergistic Zr/Cu interaction that optimized the surface Cu 2+ /Cu + redox couple, enriched Cu + sites, and thereby accelerated the low-temperature “fast” SCR pathway. Moreover, doping Zr generated a larger number of well-dispersed acid sites and maintained strong reducibility across a broad temperature range, collectively providing favorable conditions for the NH 3 -SCR. In situ doping derivative construction of MnOx/Mn-ZrO2-C for efficient degradation of NOx

Qiuju Qin,Chaolian Zhu,Donghai Mo,Zhengjun Chen,Lihui Dong,Bin Li,Liya Zhou

MnO x exhibits excellent low temperature activity for degradation NO x , but its poor SO 2 tolerance restrains its application. Herein, an in situ construction method for MnO x loading on Mn-doped ZrO 2 carrier with carbon (MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C) derived from Mn(NO 3 ) 2 /UIO-66 by in situ doped pyrolysis–oxidation, in which Mn replaces Zr to modify the electronic structure of the ZrO 2 . The MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C with abundant surface oxygen and acid sites showed excellent activity and better SO 2 resistance. A series of characterization results indicated that Mn doping modulates the electron structure of carrier ZrO 2 and enhances the interactions among MnO x , carbon, and Mn-ZrO 2 , resulting in increasing the electron cloud density around Mn and Zr, and consequently, the Mn and Zr on the MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C exhibit poorer sulfiphilic. These findings emphasize the benefits of utilizing a multipronged effect to fabricate highly active and sulfur-resistant NH 3 -SCR catalysts.

Efficient regeneration of Pd-SSZ-13 catalysts deactivated by alkali metals for passive NOx adsorption

Dongdong Chen,Weiqi Zhang,Zhenzhen Jia,Huibin Liu,Bo Zhang,Shasha Liu,Feng Liang,Wuwan Xiong,Xiang Li

Pd-loaded CHA zeolites (e.g., Pd-SSZ-13) have been identified as a promising candidate for passive NOx adsorption (PNA) in low-temperature environments. The inclusion of lubricant oil additives or biofuels in automotive exhaust after-treatment systems subjects Pd-SSZ-13 to chemical poisoning from contaminants such as alkali metals (e.g., Na and K). In this study, we present a straightforward yet highly effective approach to regenerate Pd-SSZ-13 that has been poisoned by alkali metals, achieved through washing with a dilute NH4Cl solution. The underlying mechanisms of both poisoning and regeneration were thoroughly explored, revealing that the deactivation due to alkali-metal poisoning is primarily attributed to the transformation of the active Pd2+ ion into PdOx and a concomitant reduction in Brønsted acid sites. The NH4Cl washing not only removes alkali metal contaminants, thereby restoring the Brønsted acid sites previously occupied by them, but also converts the inert PdOx back into their active states (i.e., isolated Pd2+). This investigation unveils a simplified yet highly efficient NH4Cl washing technique for the regeneration of the deactivated Pd-SSZ-13, offering profound implications for extending the catalyst's lifespan and enhancing its performance in cold-start exhaust after-treatment applications.

Pore-matched activated carbon with Nanoconfined reactors for efficient NOx separation from industrial flue gas

Chen Yang,Wanxiong Xiao,Jiahao Zhang,Liqiang Qi,Hejin Yuan,Yajuan Zhang

Nitrogen oxides (NO) emitted from industrial flue gas are significant air pollutants; however, their efficient separation at room temperature remains a challenge due to the weak affinity of activated carbon (AC) for NO. In this study, we present a metal-free strategy for constructing nanoconfined reactors within commercial AC through glucose-assisted hydrothermal carbonization followed by CO 2 activation. This innovative approach facilitates dual pore regulation: glucose-derived carbon microspheres effectively narrow oversized pores, while subsequent CO 2 activation refines the structure to concentrate micropores at approximately 0.7 nm, which precisely matches the molecular dimensions of NO and creates confinement spaces conducive to catalytic oxidation. Concurrently, the process enriches stable carbonyl groups (C=O) that act as active sites within these confined spaces. The optimal material (800 AC-0.2G-180H-800C4) exhibits a micropore surface area of 432.9 m 2 /g within the 0.643–0.804 nm range and achieves a NO x adsorption capacity of 2.09 ± 0.10 mmol/g at room temperature—1.32 times higher than that of pristine AC. At 55 °C, it maintains a capacity of 0.31 ± 0.02 mmol/g, which is 3.43-fold greater than that of unmodified AC (0.07 ± 0.03 mmol/g). Kinetic analysis indicates that the confined micropores enhance the collision frequency of NO-O 2 , while carbonyl groups facilitate NO activation, together enabling efficient catalytic oxidation. Unlike metal-based modifications, this method avoids secondary pollution and allows for easy disposal of spent adsorbents. This work presents a sustainable pathway for designing high-performance carbon materials for industrial NO x abatement through the synergy of confinement and catalysis.

New CHA-Type aluminoborosilicates as efficient catalysts for MTO and NH3-SCR of NOx reactions

Jingyan Zhang,Peng Ji,Li Ren,Yuhong Zhao,Shiqing Li,Hao Xu,Honggen Peng,Jin-Gang Jiang,Yejun Guan,Peng Wu

The small-pore CHA -type zeolites have received intensive attentions due to their outstanding performance in both of the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process and ammonia selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NH 3 -SCR of NO x ) reactions. However, the costly synthesis of CHA -type aluminosilicate is a great issue for the practical application. In this study, a novel and cheap organic structure-directing agent of N,N,N -trimethylisobutylammonium hydroxide was developed and used to synthesize CHA -type zeolites (name as ECNU-25) with boric acid as the supporting agent. The Si/Al ratio in the synthetic gel could be tailored in a wide range of 50 - ∞. [Al,B]-ECNU-25 zeolite thus synthesized served as an effective catalyst for the MTO reaction. After Cu 2+ -exchange, the Cu-[Al,B]-ECNU-25 was also highly active in the NH 3 -SCR of NO x .

Enhanced NOx absorption in flue gas by wet oxidation of red mud and phosphorus sludge

Bin Li,Shuai Liu,Hengxi Zhu,Wenmin Qian,Pan Wang,Ruihao Yang,Jin Zhang,Qihong Cen,Zewei Liu,Ping Ning

The environmental problem caused by industrial emissions of NO x has been studied in the past dacades. In this study, red mud coupling with phosphorus sludge were used to enhance the solution to absorb NO x from the flue gas . Firstly, red mud reacted with the binder silicic acid in the phosphorus sludge, destroying the emulsion structure of the phosphorus sludge. Then, the P 4 in the phosphorus sludge is completely released, and the P 4 reacted with O 2 in the flue gas to produce O 3 and O. NO and NO 2 contained in the flue gas reacted with the active O and O 3 to produce high-valent NO x , such as NO 3 , N 2 O 5 . At last, the mixed slurry of red mud and phosphorus sludge absorbed the high-valent NO x , resulting in the formation of Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F along with HNO 3 . Using phosphorus sludge to produce O 3 in the reaction process can reduce the production cost of O 3 and achieve waste utilization. Meanwhile, the interaction between red mud and phosphorus sludge can promote phosphorus sludge to produce O 3 and remove F - from phosphorus sludge, as well as avoid the problem of secondary pollution. This study should be helpful for red mud and phosphorus sludge utilization and flue gas denitration.

Single Mo atoms paired with neighbouring Ti atoms catalytically decompose ammonium bisulfate formed in low-temperature SCR

Junxiao Chen,Xue Fang,Zhouhong Ren,Weiye Qu,Xiaolei Hu,Zhen Ma,Liwei Chen,Xi Liu,Yaxin Chen,Xingfu Tang

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 has been widely used for NOx emission control, but commercial catalysts inevitably suffer severe deactivation in SO2-containing stack gases at low temperatures because the ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4, ABS) formed in SCR blocks the surface active sites. We resolve this issue by developing a TiO2-supported single-atom Mo catalyst (Mo1/TiO2) that decomposes ABS at ∼225 °C, far lower than the dew point of ABS (∼260 °C). Single Mo atoms paired with the neighboring surface Ti atoms function as Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites, which respectively adsorb the NH4+ and HSO4− of ABS. After the oxidation of NH4+ by surface lattice oxygen on the Mo sites, electrons left behind on the dual sites are localized around the Fermi level, which allows them to transfer to the adsorbed HSO4− on the Ti sites, thus releasing SO2 at low temperatures. The Mo1/TiO2 catalyst with Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites enables the decomposition of ABS at low temperatures, and thus this work provides a way to effectively control NOx emission particularly from industrial boilers.

Excellent MCM-49 Supported CeCuOx Nanocatalyst with Ultrawide Operating Temperature Window and Strong Anti-Alkali Ability for NH3-SCR

Xinyu Han,Mengyao Bian,Kaijie Liu,Xin Yang,Daying Zheng,Xiangguang Yang,Yibo Zhang

Graphical Schematic diagram of the dominant mechanism of NH 3 -SCR reaction on CeCu/MCM-49 catalyst before and after poisoning. The L−H mechanism was dominant before poisoning. However, after alkali metal poisoning, NO x adsorption on the catalyst is inhibited, so the E−R mechanism dominates. NO x is a common atmospheric pollutant, and NH 3 -SCR technology efficiently purifies it. CeCuO x binary-oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and loaded onto acid MCM-49 molecular sieve with a large specific surface area to increase acid sites and disperse active sites of the catalyst. The optimized 35 % CeCu/MCM-49 catalyst effectively purified over 80 % of NO x in the temperature range of 200–500 °C and demonstrated excellent resistance to alkali metals, such as K, Na, and Ca. Even after K poisoning, it still removed over 80 % of NO x in the range of 200–450 °C. Various characterization methods, including XRD, FT-IR, TEM, and N 2 isotherm adsorption-desorption tests, confirmed the structure of the catalyst remained intact after poisoning with no substance change, nor agglomeration of nanoparticles. NH 3 -TPD and H 2 -TPR confirmed that the catalyst had effective acidity and redox capacity that were not affected by alkali metals. In-situ DRIFTs showed that the catalytic reaction predominant mechanism shifted from L−H to E−R mechanism after poisoning. This study provides valuable insights into the development of high-performance Ce-based NH 3 -SCR catalysts with alkali metal resistance.

Application of Catalytic H2O2-Mediated NOx Removal Process Leveraging Solid Waste Residues: Exemplified by Copper Slag

Huidong Tang,Jiacheng Bao,Chen Liu,Yuwen Deng,Yixing Ma,Lei Shi,Shuangyou Bao,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Xin Sun

In pursuing sustainable environmental solutions, the concept of ‘waste to treasure’ has emerged as a promising approach. In this study, a new process is proposed to combine solid copper slag with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from acidic exhaust gases, thus effectively utilizing waste materials. Firstly, different smelting slags were screened to determine the catalytic potential of copper slag for hydrogen peroxide. Subsequently, the catalytic activity of the copper slags at various stages of the copper smelting process was thoroughly evaluated and optimized. In addition, a multifactorial evaluation of slow-cooled copper slag catalysts for removing NOx was carried out. Preliminary indications are that the iron phase in the copper slag is identified as the main source of catalytic activity sites. The results suggest that Fe2+/Fe3+sites on the surface of the Fe phase in the slow-cooled copper slag may be crucial in improving the NOx removal efficiency. The main reactive oxygen species detected in the system were ·OH, ·O2⁻, and1O2. In addition, the transformation products, formation pathways, and reaction mechanisms of NO in the liquid phase were initially investigated and determined. This study provides a green and sustainable path for the utilization of solid waste and management of atmospheric fumes in the non-ferrous metal industry and offers new perspectives to address environmental challenges in industrial processes.

NiCoCe-LDO catalysts for low-temperature SCR of NOX with C3H6: Trimetallic synergy and reaction mechanism

Yuhao Wang,Jacob Senior Atta Owusu,Min Cui,Mingyu Su,Huqin Zheng,Sameer Shahid,Bingtao Zhao,Jarosław Zuwała,Yaxin Su

To advance hydrocarbon-selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) of NOx, ternary mixed metal oxide catalysts (Ni x Co y Ce z -LDO) were synthesized through calcination of layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursors prepared via urea-assisted homogeneous precipitation. The trimetallic catalysts demonstrated enhanced low-temperature activity, improved redox properties, and superior sulfur resistance, attributed to synergistic interactions among Ni, Co, and Ce. In particular, Ni 0.48 Co 0.24 Ce 0.28 -LDO exhibited optimal performance, attaining 96.6% NO conversion with 98.25% N 2 selectivity at 225 °C, while maintaining high stability under 5% O 2 and 0.02% SO 2 . Characterization (XRD, ICP, SEM and BET) confirmed the formation of highly dispersed nanocrystallites with uniformly distributed metals and identified CeO 2 as the dominant crystalline phase, which provided abundant Lewis acid sites for C 3 H 6 activation. XPS and H 2 -TPR results indicated that the incorporation of Ce increased the Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ and Co 3+ /Co 2+ ratios, promoted oxygen vacancy formation, and enhanced catalyst reducibility, while the presence of Ni facilitated the generation of mobile surface oxygen species (O β ). Py-FTIR analysis further revealed that the synergistic interaction between Ni and Co enhanced Lewis acidity by increasing the density of unsaturated cationic sites, explaining why the trimetallic Ni 0.48 Co 0.24 Ce 0.28 -LDO catalyst exhibited the highest Lewis acid content. In-situ DRIFTS demonstrated that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites promoted the formation of reactive nitrate species, while C 3 H 6 oxidation to formate and acetate intermediates drove the NO X reduction pathway. Based on these results, a reaction mechanism was proposed. Overall, this study provides valuable insights for designing efficient and low-cost catalysts for HC-SCR applications.
