V-doped Ni2P nanoparticle grafted g-C3N4 nanosheets for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance under visible light

Qian Chen,Jianfeng Huang,Ting Xiao,Liyun Cao,Dinghan Liu,Xiaoyi Li,Mengfan Niu,Guoting Xu,Koji Kajiyoshi,Liangliang Feng

Exploring low-cost and highly active photocatalysts with noble metal-free cocatalysts is of great significance for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight irradiation. In this work, a novel V-doped Ni2P nanoparticle loaded g-C3N4 nanosheet is reported as a highly efficient photocatalyst for H2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrate that the optimized 7.8 wt% V-Ni2P/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 271.5 μmol g−1 h−1, which is comparable to that of the 1 wt% Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst (279 μmol g−1 h−1), and shows favorable hydrogen evolution stability for five successive runs within 20 h. The remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of V-Ni2P/g-C3N4 is mainly due to the enhanced visible light absorption ability, the facilitated separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs, the prolonged lifetime of photo-generated carriers and the fast transmission ability of electrons.

Novel Ni2P-microporous nickel phosphite supported on nitrogen-doped graphene composite electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Ruxin Deng,Lingling Lin,Liya Li,Jian Wu

Transition metal phosphides are regarded as promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for water splitting. An efficient mass-transfer mechanism can be promoted through constructing microporous structures. In addition, introducing carbon materials as carriers to form interface interactions is beneficial for increasing electronic conductivity so as to promote the catalytic activity further. In this work, a nitrogen-doped graphene (NGO)-supported microporous nickel phosphide-nickel phosphite (Ni2P-Ni11(HPO3)8(OH)6@NGO, Ni2P-MPH@NGO), where Ni2P nanoparticles uniformly fill the micropores of Ni11(HPO3)8(OH)6 and then are supported on two-dimensional NGO via a simple two-step method, has been studied as a novel efficient electrocatalyst for HER. Compared with carbon nanotubes and graphene as carbon-based carriers, the optimized Ni2P-MPH@NGO catalyst shows excellent HER performance with a smaller overpotential, lower Tafel slope and long-term catalytic durability under acid conditions. The results demonstrate that NGO can enhance the catalytic activity of Ni2P-MPH@NGO efficiently. The results show that the synergistic effect of the microporous structure of Ni11(HPO3)8(OH)6 and NGO effectively improves the catalytic activity of the Ni2P-MPH@NGO composite catalyst, which provides a promising strategy for the design of a new low-cost and high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts.

CoP/Ni2P heteronanoparticles integrated with atomic Co/Ni dual sites for enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution

Ting Feng,Fang Wang,Yanjie Xu,Meijia Chang,Xiujuan Jin,Yulin zhou,Jinhua Piao,Jianfei Lei

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted considerable attention as an advanced electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, the catalytic efficiency of single-component TMPs is still restricted that cannot endure long-term running and easy to be corroded especially under harsh conditions. In this work, a multicomponent electrocatalyst combined with CoP/Ni 2 P heteronanoparticles and Co/Ni single-atom active sites (denoted as N–C@CoP/Ni 2 P) is rational designed and prepared. The obtained N–C@CoP/Ni 2 P electrode material exhibits enhanced performance with the overpotential of 153 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and the small Tafel value of 53.01 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and a satisfied result is obtained in basic media as well. The outstanding HER performance is mainly benefiting from the synergistic effect between CoP and Ni 2 P, and the highly catalytic faction of atomic Co/Ni dual sites. Furthermore, a powerful conductive network fabricated by N-doped carbon skeleton and in-situ grown CNTs improves the conductivity of catalyst. Such a stereoscopic 3D nanostructure is also facile to accelerate the shuttle of electrons and ions.

Self-assembled Ni2P nanosheet-implanted reduced graphene oxide composite as highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Shanshan Luo,Ran Wang,Peng Hei,Lili Gao,Jingyue Yang,Tifeng Jiao

Hydrogen generation from electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the promising methods to gain clean and sustainable energy. As a semi-reaction in the electrochemical reaction of water splitting, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has limited the development and practical application of water electrolysis technology due to its slow kinetic speed and high overpotential. Through different doping options, defect engineering, and interface coupling effects, the activity of the catalyst can be improved. By using low-priced transition metals, composites such as iron-based, cobalt-based and nickel-based phosphorus-doped or nitrogen-sulfur doped composite materials are designed and synthesized to achieve large overpotentials and current densities, thus the performance could be improved. In this work, the synthesis of Ni 2 P/rGO nano-hybrids by phosphating Ni(OH) 2 /rGO precursors at low temperature was investigated. It is worth noting that the synthesized Ni 2 P/rGO hybrid can be used as an OER catalyst under alkaline conditions and remains active for more than 12 h. It has an initial potential at 221 mV and the Tafel slope is 105.7 mV/dec. Present research works provide new ideas for the preparation of alternative precious metal electrocatalysts used for OER.

Ni2P/biocarbon composite derived from an unusual phosphorus-rich precursor as a superior catalyst for 4-nitrophenol reduction

Yi Xie,Linli Dai,Tonghui Xie,Yongkui Zhang,Yabo Wang,Huan Yang

Conversion of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) through advanced reduction process is important to lower the hazardous risk of 4-NP, which requires the development of highly efficient catalyst. Herein, we proposed a novel strategy to fabricate nickel phosphide/carbon composite for 4-NP reduction in the presence of NaBH 4 . An unusual precursor of adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) was applied to provide the essential phosphorus and carbon elements for nickel phosphide and biocarbon, respectively. ATP-Ni complex was firstly prepared and then transformed to nickel phosphide/biocarbon composite by an anoxic pyrolysis treatment. Material characterizations confirmed both large particles of hundreds of nanometers and small particles of ∼2.4 nm existing for Ni 2 P, which were dispersed on N/P-doped biocarbon with thin layer sheet-like structure. When applied for 4-NP reduction, Ni 2 P/BC exhibited fast reaction kinetic with a pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 0.019  s −1 (normalized rate constant 253  s −1   g −1 ) and good reusability in 10 consecutive reaction runs (95.8% conversion efficiency). It is suggested that such superior activity may originate from the high affinity of Ni 2 P/BC towards reactants and the good electron transfer ability of Ni 2 P/BC. This study not only enriches the synthesis strategy of transition metal phosphide, but also provides a superior catalyst for advanced reduction process.

NiO-Ni2P/C3N4 heterostructures with synergistic adsorption-electrocatalysis functions for suppressing polysulfide shuttle effect in lithium sulfur batteries

Yaolin Hou,Jolla Kullgren,Lei Han,Pengyuan Qian,Wei Yuan,Jia Liu,Haiming Xie,Jiefang Zhu

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, renowned for their exceptional theoretical energy density, are positioned as a leading candidate for future energy storage systems, offering a potential pathway to overcome the energy density limitations of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, the notorious lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics hinder their practical application. To resolve these challenges, we report a novel NiO-Ni 2 P/C 3 N 4 heterostructure synthesized via an in-situ phosphation process. Herein, we present an in situ phosphorylation strategy for the construction of NiO-Ni 2 P heterojunctions anchored on a conductive C 3 N 4 substrate (NiO-Ni 2 P/C 3 N 4 ) for further integration into commercial polypropylene (PP) separator (denoted as NiO-Ni 2 P/C 3 N 4 @PP). Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the NiO phase facilitated strong chemisorption of LiPSs, while the Ni 2 P component reduced the energy barrier for Li 2 S dissolution through optimised d-band electron transfer. Concurrently, the C 3 N 4 framework enhanced the interfacial charge transfer and significantly reduced the charge transfer resistance. Benefiting from the synergistic “adsorption-transformation-conduction” triple-function, the cells with the NiO-Ni 2 P/C 3 N 4 @PP separator exhibit remarkable cycling stability (over 300 cycles at 3C) and outstanding rate capability (82.5 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at 5C). This work provides atomic-level insights into the engineering of multi-step sulfur electrochemical heterostructures, providing a generic design paradigm for high-energy metal-sulfur batteries.

W-doping regulated the microenvironment of Ni2P@W-MoO2 composite electrocatalyst for driving ampere-level alkaline seawater splitting

Tingting Tang,Yutao Cao,Min Li,Shuo Cui,Ying Wu,Zhize Yu,Wei Cui,Hong Zhao

The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes is critical for renewable energy technologies, but still challenging in seawater electrolysis at ampere-level current density. Herein, we design a nanoarray composite catalyst Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 through one-step hydrothermal and post-phosphidation, which shows excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in all alkaline, simulated seawater and seawater electrolytes at ampere-level current density, with low overpotentials of 328, 352 and 364 mV, respectively. Furthermore, an overall urea-assisted water splitting electrolyzer obtained by using Ni 2 P@W-MoO 2 as the bifunctional catalyst can deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.36 V and operate stably for 100 h. In situ ATR-FTIR monitors the dynamic adsorption behavior of the important intermediate *OH on the surface of electrocatalysts. A series of density functional theory calculations further uncover the incorporation of W ameliorates the microenvironment of the MoO 2 and decreases the H 2 O/*OH adsorption/dissociation energy barriers, simultaneously optimizing the H* Gibbes free energy on the Ni 2 P, which achieves superior electrochemical water splitting performance. This work breaks through the proton-deficient dilemma of the alkaline HER at ampere-level current density and provides new insights into the design of cost-efficiency and environmentally friendly transition metal-based catalysts.

A “nano jungle” like interlayer with CoP2/Ni2P heterojunctions for trapping-catalyzing lithium polysulfides in lithium-sulfur batteries

Junchun Xi,Bohui Zhao,Liang Chen,Yuxiang Chen,Yongfeng Yuan,Pingfan Du

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries face challenges such as the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a freestanding interlayer is constructed by in-situ growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated with CoP 2 /Ni 2 P heterostructured nanoparticles on the surface of waste viscose derived carbon fibers (Ni-Co-P@CNT/CF). The surface of the carbon fibers exhibits a “nano jungle” like morphology. The interconnected carbon fibers framework ensures efficient electron transport. While the tentacle-like Ni-Co-P@CNT structure facilitates the efficient capture of dissolved LiPSs and promotes their liquid-solid reaction. The built-in electric field (BIEF) at the heterointerface facilitates electron transfer, promotes the Li + diffusion and lowers the energy barriers of sulfur species conversion, which enhances LiPSs chemical adsorption and accelerates their conversion kinetics. Electrochemical tests demonstrate its outstanding performance. The cell delivers an impressive reversible capacity of 994 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.2C with a low decay rate of 0.049% per cycle. When the current density increases to 1.0C, the cell retains 580 mAh g −1 after 450 cycles. Even under high sulfur loadings (3.9 mg cm −2 ), the interlayer can still maintain stable catalytic activity.

Heterojunction-Engineered Co, Fe co-doped Ni2P@Ti₃C₂Tₓ with 3D Network Structure for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Wei Jiang,Yajun Li,Hongcheng Li,Yuhao Fu,Yi Li,Jian Ren,Qian Li,Limei Pan,Jian Yang

In this work, a unique three-dimensional (3D) network NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ composite, consisting of Co, Fe co-doped Ni 2 P (NiFeCoP) nanosheets anchored on Ti₃C₂Tₓ nanosheets via heterojunction, was situ constructed by phosphidizing the NiFeCo-LDH@Ti₃C₂Tₓ precursor. The 3D network structure establishes a 3D conductive network while generating a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, which efficiently accelerates electron/ion transport and simultaneously improves the structure stability of the electrode. DFT calculations demonstrate that Co doping further optimizes the electronic structure of NiFeCoP, introduces additional active sites, thereby promoting electrochemical reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect among Ni, Fe, and Co with different redox potentials effectively buffers the volume changes during charge/discharge processes. Consequently, NiFeCoP@Ti₃C₂Tₓ as lithium ion batteries (LIBs) anode shows outstanding electrochemical performance at different current density (950   mAh/g after 340 cycles at 0.5   A/g, 816   mAh/g after 900 cycles at 1   A/g, 541   mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2   A/g).

La-Ni2P/NiSe@C/NF Heterojunction Electrocatalysts: Synergistically Promoting Urea Oxidation Reaction through Lanthanum Doping and Interface Engineering

Yuyan Tang,Tingting Fan,Arslan Hameed,Yuanhang Ma,Wenxiang Sheng,Yawei Li,Ping Chen,Peng Li

To address the escalating global energy demand and advance sustainable hydrogen production, we report the rational design of a carbon-encapsulated La-doped Ni 2 P/NiSe heterojunction electrocatalyst on nickel foam (La-Ni 2 P/NiSe@C/NF) via synergistic La doping and interface engineering for enhanced urea oxidation reaction (UOR). La induces porous, wrinkled nanosheets, boosting surface area (11.89 m 2 g -1 ), enhancing active site exposure. The Ni 2 P/NiSe heterointerfaces generate built-in electric fields that accelerate interfacial charge transport. XPS, EXAFS, and in situ Raman confirm La doping modulates Ni 3+ electronic structure, thereby shifting the Ni²⁺/Ni³⁺ redox transition to lower potentials, thereby shifting the Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ redox transition to lower potentials. The La-Ni 2 P/NiSe@C/NF exhibits excellent UOR activity in an alkaline electrolyte, delivering a current density of 10   mA   cm -2 at 1.296   V (vs. RHE). Remarkably, it achieves a low Tafel slope of 32.73 ± 0.73   mV dec -1 . These performance metrics surpass both control samples and state of the art benchmark materials. Moreover, a two-electrode electrolyzer assembled with La-Ni 2 P/NiSe@C/NF||Pt/C/NF exhibits exceptional 250   h stability at 50   mA   cm -2 , underscoring the efficacy of rare-earth doping and heterointerface engineering for high-performance UOR.

Built-in electric field induced interfacial charge distributions of Ni2P/NiSe2 heterojunction for urea-assisted hydrogen evolution reaction

Yiqiang Sun,Wenwen Cao,Xuening Ge,Xiaodong Yang,Yong Wang,Yuan Xu,Bo Ouyang,Qi Shen,Cuncheng Li

The direct urea fuel cell (DUFC) with high energy efficiency and convenience is expected to have promising practical applications in green energy development, but it is severely hindered by the slow kinetics of the intrinsic urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Herein, a built-in electric field (BEF) strategy to obtain efficient heterogeneous Ni2P/NiSe2 electrocatalysts as bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the UOR is reported. XPS, energy band structure analysis and DFT calculations verify that the BEF in the heterojunction can induce electron transfer between Ni2P and NiSe2. More importantly, the BEF-induced interfacial charge distributions endow the Ni2P/NiSe2 heterogeneous electrocatalysts with optimized binding free energy of the H* and urea intermediates, thereby resulting in an intrinsic enhancement of the catalytic activity. Our work may explore a pathway to design efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts by precisely constructing and manipulating an interfacial BEF.

Theoretical expectation and experimental investigation on the feasibility of N-doped Ni2P as highly active hydrogen evolution catalyst

Kai Liu,Zizai Ma,Jinping Li,Xiaoguang Wang

In this paper, N-doped Ni 2 P (N-Ni 2 P) as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution was proposed. Firstly, the feasibility of N atom doping was calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Ni top site, Ni bridge site, Ni hollow site and P top site were calculated for Ni 2 P (001) and N-Ni 2 P (001). The results confirm that N atom doping can make the Gibbs free energy (ΔG H∗ ) closer to thermal neutrality (ΔG H∗  = 0) and move the d -band center away from Fermi level . Besides, charge density difference pattern and bader charge indicate N atom doping regulate the charge structure of the catalyst surface . Based on the guidance of DFT calculation results, Ni 2 P and N-Ni 2 P catalysts were also experimentally synthesized. It is revealed that the N-Ni 2 P can achieve cathodic current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 110 mV and 302 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 82 mV and 235 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively. This work shows that it is feasible to increase HER performance by modifying Ni 2 P catalyst with N doping .
