Microwave catalytic activities of MFe2O4@CMT (M = Ni, Co) supported catalysts for the degradation of dimethyl phthalate

Wenli Qin,Xinyi Zhang,Zefei Chen,Xueya Liu,Manqing Ai,Pingping Zhang,Ying Ye,Zengling Ma

Meso–macroporous MFe2O4@CMT (M = Ni, Co) catalysts were synthesized by coating carbon microtubes (CMTs) employing a calcination method. The obtained materials NiFe2O4@CMT (PCNF) and CoFe2O4@CMT (PCCF) were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), pore structure analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption of catalysts was measured and it was found that the maximum reflection loss value of PCCF and PCNF was about −41.50 dB at a thickness of 1.85 mm and −24.70 dB at a thickness of 6.55 mm, respectively. The composite catalysts were prepared for the microwave (MW)-induced Fenton-like catalytic degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). The microwave catalytic activity of PCNF was higher than that of PCCF, which was closely related to its higher concentration of active species, better microwave-absorbing ability and high interaction between NiFe2O4 and CMT. Moreover, the degradation kinetics could be well-fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. With an increase in the MW power, initial pH, catalyst dosage, and H2O2 concentration, the DMP degradation rate initially increased and then decreased, while it declined continuously with an increase in the initial DMP concentration. The introduction of metal oxides increased the mobility of the surface oxygen, playing a crucial role in the generation of surface oxygen species. The catalysts maintained high stability after five reaction cycles. The overall findings provide new insight into PCCF and PCNF under MW irradiation for the degradation of DMP and other relevant organic pollutants.

A multi-functional gum arabic binder for NiFe2O4 nanotube anodes enabling excellent Li/Na-ion storage performance

Kaiqiang Zhou,Meiling Kang,Xiaoqing He,Zhensheng Hong,Zhigao Huang,Mingdeng Wei

Electrode pulverization, low electrochemical reaction kinetics and an unstable SEI layer have prevented the application of transition metal oxides with a conversion-type mechanism. Here, we describe gum arabic (GA) as a green and multi-functional binder for the fabrication of a NiFe2O4 nanotube (NFNT) electrode enabling predominant application in LIBs and NIBs. Firstly, it's revealed that the NFNTs–GA electrode possesses better mechanical properties of a higher friction coefficient, better elastic resilience and higher reduced modulus and hardness compared with a NFNTs–PVDF electrode. Secondly, the NFNTs–GA electrode can restrain the side reactions between the electrode and electrolyte, leading to the formation of a remarkably stable and thin SEI layer during discharge and charge processes. Thirdly, it is demonstrated by KPFM that the NFNTs–GA electrode possesses improved surface electrical properties and lower energy for the escape of electrons. Consequently, the NFNTs–GA electrode demonstrates much improved rate capability, cycling stability and columbic efficiency when used as an anode material for LIBs. It displays a stable capacity of 770 mA h g−1 which can be retained after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. More importantly, the NFNTs–GA electrode exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency of 73% (only 48% for the NFNTs–PVDF electrode) and enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics with significantly improved oxidation and reduction peaks in the application of NIBs.

Hierarchical Core-shell metal hydroxide-derived NiO/NiFe2O4 microflowers with interior heterojunction for wheat mildew biomarkers detection

Kaichun Xu,Kaidi Wu,Zichen Zheng,Marie-Pierre Planche,Sihao Deng,Hanlin Liao,Chao Zhang

1-octen-3-ol is reported as a representative biomarker among volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with wheat mildew, and the corresponding chemiresistive sensors reported to date are still under development due to their limited sensitivity. To achieve excellent 1-octen-3-ol sensing performance, a two-/three-dimension (2D/3D) hierarchical core-shell structure NiO/NiFe 2 O 4 with abundant interior heterojunction interfaces was synthesized. This simple strategy achieves a triple effect: (i) the pre-concentration effect arising from the core-shell structure, (ii) charge transfer and interfacial modulation between the core and shell, and (iii) the interfacial interaction of the NiO/NiFe 2 O 4 heterojunction formed within the 2D nanosheets of the shell. The optimal NiO/NiFe 2 O 4 sensor demonstrated superior overall performance at 275 °C, whose response value to 100 ppm 1-octen-3-ol reached 1109 ± 79, with excellent selectivity (S 1-octen-3-ol /the max of S other VOCs  = 4.0), significantly outperforming previously reported sensors. A significant enhancement in response to complex VOCs generated during wheat storage was achieved, demonstrating the practical feasibility of NiO/NiFe 2 O 4 . This work may serve as a guideline for developing high-performance hierarchical core-shell gas sensing materials.

Pre-Anchored NiFe2O4 Quantum Dots Enable Alkali-Regulated MOF-Derived NiCo-LDH Heterostructures for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

Qianwei Zhang,Jiawei Kou,Jiahui Shi,Yu Liu,Yanrui Hao,Mingyue Wang,Hao Guo,Wu Yang

Pre-anchoring and alkali-regulated strategy constructs NiCo-LDH@NiFe 2 O 4 QDs heterostructure. • NiFe 2 O 4 quantum dots boost conductivity and structural stability of LDH. • Alkali source tuning modulates nanosheet morphology and ion diffusion. • The NiCo-LDH@QDs-K electrode delivers 2195.55   F·g -1 at 1   A·g -1 . • Asymmetric supercapacitor achieves 80.98   Wh·kg -1 , powers timer for 28   min. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess high theoretical capacitance. However, their inherent low conductivity and structural instability during cycling limit practical applications. In this study, we propose an innovative pre-anchoring and directed conversion synthesis strategy for the rational synthesis of a tightly integrated NiCo-LDH with quantum dots (QDs) composite. Highly conductive NiFe 2 O 4 QDs were uniformly pre-anchored onto the surface of NiCo-BTC, followed by precise regulation of the alkalization process to in situ convert the precursor into LDH. Owing to the spatial confinement effect of the MOF precursor, aggregation of the quantum dots is effectively suppressed. Meanwhile, the in situ conversion process establishes strong interfacial coupling and efficient ion/electron transport pathways between the two components, thereby synergistically improving electrical conductivity, charge-transfer kinetics, and structural robustness.Benefiting from this unique structural design, the resulting composite exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance, achieving a specific capacitance of 987.99   C·g -1 at a current density of 1   A·g -1 . Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with this composite as the positive electrode achieved an energy density of 80.98   Wh·kg -1 at a power density of 784.94   W·kg -1 and is capable of powering commercial electronic devices. This study provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance MOF-derived electrode materials through interfacial structural design. Download: Download high-res image (226KB) Download: Download full-size image Through pre-anchoring and targeted conversion strategies, NiFe 2 O 4 quantum dots were uniformly anchored onto the NiCo-BTC surface and in situ converted into LDH, successfully constructing the NiCo-LDH@NiFe 2 O 4 QDs composite material. The asymmetric supercapacitors assembled from this material exhibited high energy density.

One pot green synthesis and electromagnetic wave absorption performance of manganese dioxide@nitrogen-doped carbon@NiFe2O4 hybrids

Xinxin Dai,Di Lan,Xingliang Chen,Xingwei Wang,Guangbin Ji

The accelerating pace of technological advancement and industrialization has propelled electromagnetic radiation protection and heavy metal treatment to the forefront of current research. In this work, we adopted an original one pot green synthesis method, fabricated a set of novel manganese dioxide@nitrogen-doped carbon@NiFe 2 O 4 hybrids. The microstructures and morphologies, crystal forms, chemical compositions, electromagnetic parameters and electromagnetic wave absorption performances of as-synthesized hybrids were investigated in detail. Result of reflection loss curves indicated that the optimized sample obtained by adjusting the dosage of pyrrole monomer exhibited ideal electromagnetic wave absorption efficiency, with a minimum reflection loss value of −48 dB at the sample thickness of 3.2 mm, which can mainly be attributed to the resonance effect caused by interface polarization, reasonable impedance matching and some other factors. The synthesis concept involved in this one pot method is also beneficial for promoting the development of green synthesis.

Pre-carbonization-mediated construction of urchin-like NiFe2O4 superparticles with enhanced CNT growth for efficient oxygen evolution

Junjie Qiu,Xiangyun Xi,Shuoran Zheng,Tongtao Li,Yajun Wang,Xiaomeng Ren,Angang Dong

In this study, we report the rational design and synthesis of carbonized NiFe 2 O 4 superparticles (CarSPs) hierarchically integrated with densely aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) architectures, hereafter denoted as CarSP-CNTs, which exhibit a biomimetic urchin-like morphology. Through exploitation of the colloidal self-assembly and catalytic functionalities inherent to NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs), we achieve seamless integration of one-dimensional CNT arrays with three-dimensional superstructural frameworks. Systematic investigation reveals that the pre-carbonization of surface-bound organic ligands coupled with subsequent CNT growth induces synergistic interplay between conductive carbon matrices and active spinel oxide phases. This structural optimization confers CarSP-CNTs with enhanced charge transfer kinetics and catalytically robust interfaces, as evidenced by their superior electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte (1 M KOH). The optimized CarSP-CNTs exhibit a minimal overpotential of 307 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , alongside remarkable operational stability exceeding 20 h of continuous electrolysis. These findings establish a paradigm for the rational design of hierarchically structured, multi-component electrocatalysts through coordinated nanoscale engineering, offering a versatile platform for advancing energy conversion technologies.

Oxygen vacancy and heterointerface engineering of Ni3Fe/NiFe2O4 @N-GTs oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst for water splitting

Jiachen Zou,Guanying Song,Anguo Cui,Zhenjiang Li

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in accelerating electrochemical water splitting green energy conversion systems. Herein, the dual strategy of incorporating oxygen vacancy and engineering heterointerface was employed for constructing N-doping graphene tubes (N-GTs) supported Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 heterostructure with abundant oxygen vacancies (Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 @N-GTs). Benefit from accelerating reaction kinetics and optimizing adsorption strength for reaction intermediates resulting from the synergistic effect of vacancies introduction and heterointerface formation, the optimized Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 @N-GTs catalyst exhibits remarkably enhanced OER performance with an overpotential of 230 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 33 mV dec −1 and 330 h stability at the high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, the full water splitting cell consisting of the Ni 3 Fe/NiFe 2 O 4 @N-GTs-350 anode and a Pt/C cathode delivers a low cell voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm −2 and presents excellent durability for over 330 h of continuous operation at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating it promising electrocatalyst for potential applications in the hydrogen production field.

Yu Zhao,Shenggong He,Yuping Wu,Xiang Liu,Lingzhi Zhao,Yuzuo Ye,Shaofeng Wang,Xianhua Hou

Lithium dual-ion pseudo-capacitors (L-DICs) are attracting more and more attentions as electrochemical energy storage facilities, owing to high working plateaus, low cost, and environment friendly. In this work, three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like NiFe 2 O 4 with one-dimensional (1D) radially oriented nanorods is synthesized via hydrothermal method , which is used as anode material in L-DICs. The coordinated buffer space of the 3D microsphere and large length-to-diameter ratio of the 1D nanorods guarantee the capacitive-controlled Li storage and ensure the cycle stability of the electrode. By applying graphite as cathode, the L-DICs based on the urchin-like NiFe 2 O 4 as anode deliver a high reversible discharge capacity of ∼66 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 for over 350 cycles with 82.5% capacity retention.

Tailoring NiFe2O4 nanoparticles via electron-rich co centers and abundant redox pairs: boosting peroxymonosulfate activation for micropollutant degradation

Bao Pan,Jiahao Zhang,Ruobai Li,Yanle Zhou,Jiani Qin,Rong Xu,Chuanyi Wang

The pervasive presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in water bodies underscores the urgency for the advancement of efficient and sustainable methods for their removal. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated significant potential in water purification, with their effectiveness largely hinging on the development of high-performance catalysts. In this study, cobalt-doped nickel ferrite (Co-NFO) nanocatalysts were synthesized using a sol-gel combined with calcination method to enhance PMS activation for the degradation of micropollutants. Characterization results confirmed the successful incorporation of Co into the spinel lattice of NFO, which improved phase purity and electronic properties without significantly affecting textural features. The optimized 2.5%Co-NFO catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance in the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), achieving a 92.7% degradation efficiency within 15 min, significantly outperforming the undoped NFO catalyst. The system demonstrated broad applicability across various micropollutants and maintained excellent stability and reusability over multiple reaction cycles. In-depth mechanistic studies, incorporating radical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, electrochemical measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, have elucidated that the degradation process is driven by a multitude of reactive species. The enhanced catalytic activity was attributed to the improved electron transfer efficiency and stronger PMS adsorption at Co-active sites. Potential CBZ degradation pathways were proposed, and toxicity assessment indicated a general reduction in the acute toxicity of the generated intermediates. This study introduces an innovative Co-doped magnetic catalyst, which, through the doping process, significantly enhances its catalytic activity for PMS activation, thereby offering a promising solution for efficient water purification.

Selective structure transformation for NiFe/NiFe2O4 embedded porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosphere with improved oxygen evolution reaction activity

Zong Liu,Bo Tang,Xiaocong Gu,Hui Liu,Ligang Feng

A bottleneck is currently met on the very promising NiFe 2 O 4 -based catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting. Herein a significantly improved OER catalytic performance was found by selective phosphating of NiFe/NiFe 2 O 4 embedded into porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosphere (FeNi-FeNiO/CNS), that resulted in structure evolution by transferring the low active sites of FeNi alloy to more active amorphous metal phosphate/NiFe 2 O 4 in the hybrid catalyst (P-FeNiO/CNS). The spectroscopic probing and microscopic observation clearly showed the structure evolution from the hybrid NiFe/NiFe 2 O 4 to metal phosphate/NiFe 2 O 4 , and a greatly improved catalytic performance for oxygen evolution was thus obtained even a very low amount of metal was present in the system. Specifically, a quite low overpotential of 220 mV was required on P-FeNiO/CNS loaded on an inert glassy carbon electrode to drive 10 mA cm −2 , about 70 mV less than that of pristine FeNi-FeNiO/CNS and 92 mV less than that of the commercial benchmark IrO 2 catalyst. The catalytic activity and efficiency also outperformed most of the analogous Fe-Ni based catalysts. The theory analysis demonstrated FeNi alloy had the lowest activity, NiFe 2 O 4 was inferior and metal phosphate/NiFe 2 O 4 had the superior performance for OER. The highly improved catalytic performance on P-FeNiO/CNS could be attributed to the phosphating process resulting in electronic structure modulation, more active sites exposure on the surface and multi-components synergistic effect for the catalytic process. This finding has important implications for OER performance improvement of NiFe 2 O 4 catalysts system and opens a novel way to boost the performance of other NiFe based catalysts for water oxidation.

Micromotor-assisted highly efficient Fenton catalysis by a laccase/Fe-BTC-NiFe2O4 nanozyme hybrid with a 3D hierarchical structure

Jie Yang,Jia Li,Dickon H. L. Ng,Ping Yang,Wenning Yang,Yong Liu

Self-propelled micro- and nanomotors are a current research focus and have shown attractive potential in environmental applications. Here, we report a biomass approach to construct a novel tubular micromotor decorated with a nanozyme/natural enzyme hybrid, which integrated the advantages of the self-propelled movement, selectivity of a natural enzyme and catalytic activity of artificial nanozymes. Such a micromotor had a unique hierarchical structure where laccase immobilized-Fe-BTC MOF nanoparticles grew uniformly on Mn2O3–NiFe2O4 nanosheets, which was constructed using natural kapok fiber as a template. This laccase-integrated Fe-BTC/NiFe2O4 micromotor was capable of self-propulsion with a speed of 120 μm s−1 by oxygen bubbles via the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by Mn2O3. Owing to the incorporation of autonomous motion with high selectivity of natural laccase and high peroxidase-like activity of the Fe-BTC/NiFe2O4 nanozyme, these micromotors exhibited much higher catalytic activity to methylene blue degradation than their passive counterparts. Besides as a substrate to accommodate laccase immobilized-Fe-BTC, magnetic NiFe2O4 also enabled the remote magnetic control on the movement direction.

NiFe2O4/Ketjen Black Composites as Efficient Membrane Separators to Suppress the Shuttle Effect for Long-Life Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Wen Jiang,Lingling Dong,Shuanghui Liu,Shuangshuang Zhao,Kairu Han,Weimin Zhang,Kefeng Pan,Lipeng Zhang

Lithium-sulfur batteries exhibit great potential as one of the most promising energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density and specific capacity. However, the shuttle effect of the soluble polysulfide intermediates could lead to a severe self-discharge effect that hinders the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this paper, a battery separator has been prepared based on NiFe2O4/Ketjen Black (KB) modification by a simple method to solve the shuttle effect and improve the battery performance. The as-modified separator with the combination of small-size KB and NiFe2O4nanoparticles can effectively use the physical and chemical double-layer adsorption to prevent polysulfide from the shuttle. Moreover, it can give full play to its catalytic effect to improve the conversion efficiency of polysulfide and activate the dead sulfur. The results show that the NiFe2O4/KB-modified separator battery still maintains a discharge capacity of 406.27 mAh/g after 1000 stable cycles at a high current density of 1 C. Furthermore, the coulombic efficiency remains at 99%, and the average capacity attenuation per cycle is only 0.051%. This simple and effective method can significantly improve the application capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries.
