Novel ratiometric electrochemical sensing platform with dual-functional poly-dopamine and NiS@HCS signal amplification for sunset yellow detection in foods

Yongfeng Chen,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Hemei Sun,Xuguang Qiao,Yufeng Sun,Zhixiang Xu

In this work, a novel ratiometric electrochemical sensor based on dual-functional poly-dopamine (PDA) and nickel sulfide@hollow carbon spheres (NiS@HCS) was successfully developed for sunset yellow (SY) detection. The NiS@HCS nanocomposite possessing a large specific surface area, good catalytic activity and excellent electrical conductivity was employed for signal amplification. PDA films prepared by electropolymerization acted as an internal reference probe and enhanced the sensitivity of the proposed sensor through electrostatic attraction between SY and PDA. Under optimized conditions, the developed PDA/NiS@HCS/GCE sensor allowed SY quantification over wide linear range (0.01–100 μM), with a low limit of detection of 0.003 μM. SY recovery tests were carried out in rice vinegar and cooking wine with satisfactory recoveries (83.50–112.80 %). Meanwhile, the content of SY in two kinds of carbonated drinks was determined using the constructed sensor and a UV–Vis spectrometry method, with no significant difference found in the results.

Significantly Enhanced Energy-Saving H2 Production Coupled with Urea Oxidation by Low- and Non-Pt Anchored on NiS-Based Conductive Nanofibers

Mengxiao Zhong,Junyu Yang,Meijiao Xu,Siyu Ren,Xiaojie Chen,Ce Wang,Mingbin Gao,Xiaofeng Lu

Rational designing electrocatalysts is of great significance for realizing high-efficiency H 2 production in the water splitting process. Generally, reducing the usage of precious metals and developing low-potential nucleophiles oxidation reaction to replace anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are efficient strategies to promote H 2 generation. Here, NiS-coated nickel–carbon nanofibers (NiS@Ni-CNFs) are prepared for low-content Pt deposition (Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs) to attain the alkaline HER catalyst. Due to the reconfiguration of NiS phase and synergistic effect between Pt and nickel sulfides, the Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs catalyst shows a high mass activity of 2.74-fold of benchmark Pt/C sample. In addition, the NiS@Ni-CNFs catalyst performs a superior urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity with the potential of 1.366 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 , which demonstrates the great potential in the replacement of OER. Thus, a urea-assisted water splitting electrolyzer of Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs (cathode)||NiS@Ni-CNFs (anode) is constructed to exhibit small voltages of 1.44 and 1.65 V to reach 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than its overall water splitting process, and presents a 6.5-fold hydrogen production rate enhancement. This work offers great opportunity to design new catalysts toward urea-assisted water splitting with significantly promoted hydrogen productivity and reduced energy consumption.

Enhanced Li-O2 battery performance using NiS/MoS2 heterostructure by building internal electric field to promote the one-electron oxygen reduction/oxidation

Shengqi Ding,Liang Wu,Xianxia Yuan

Electrocatalysts with appropriate electron coupling toward LiO 2 intermediates can exhibit superior oxygen reduction/evolution reaction kinetics in Li-O 2 batteries (LOBs). In this work, a charge redistribution strategy has been developed by constructing NiS/MoS 2 heterostructure nanosheet self-assembled hollow microspheres with an internal electric field to regulate the interaction with LiO 2 and then improve the electrochemical performance of LOBs. Density functional theory calculations and physicochemical characterizations reveal that the difference of work functions between NiS and MoS 2 promotes the electron redistribution in heterointerface via built-in electrical field, leading to increased electron density of interfacial Ni atom, thereby enhancing its electron coupling toward LiO 2 intermediates and promoting one-electron oxygen reduction/oxidation reaction kinetics. As a result, the NiS/MoS 2 -based LOBs exhibit evidently higher discharge capacity and much better cycling performance than the batteries using NiS and MoS 2 . This work provides a reliable charge redistribution strategy induced by build-in electric field to design efficient catalysts for LOBs.

Multi-interfacial engineering of a coil-like NiS–Ni2P/Ni hybrid to efficiently boost electrocatalytic hydrogen generation in alkaline and neutral electrolyte

Mengzhao Liu,Zhe Sun,Chaofan Zhang,Shiyan Li,Chaozhen He,Yuefeng Liu,Zhongkui Zhao

Developing highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline and neutral media is crucial but still a significant challenge due to the sluggish multi-step reaction kinetics involved. The interface formed between two or more components in heterogeneous catalysts plays a critical role for electrocatalysis as it can tune the electron structure to enhance the catalytic performance. Herein, we report that multi-interface engineering of NiS, Ni2P and Ni on Ni foam results in a unique coil-like NiS–Ni2P/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst on Ni foam, which is synthesized through a two-step approach: firstly, electrodeposition of Ni microspheres on Ni foam (NF), followed by partial thermal sulfuration and phosphorization. Owing to the interfaces between NiS, Ni2P and Ni, which function as electrochemical active sites and are beneficial for dissociative adsorption of water molecules, the resultant NiS–Ni2P/Ni/NF exhibits much superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity with small overpotentials of 53 mV and 115 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline and neutral media. Remarkably, NiS–Ni2P/Ni/NF needs a lower overpotential than Pt/C to achieve a higher current density of 100 mA cm−2. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the real active sites are located at the multi-interface of NiS, Ni2P and Ni, contributing an outstanding electrocatalytic performance. This work not only reports a highly efficient coil-like multi-interfacial NiS–Ni2P/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst on Ni foam for hydrogen production, but also paves a new way for designing other highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Engineering a nitrogen-doped 3D coral-like carbon architecture for ultralong-cycle NiS anodes in half- and full-cell sodium-ion storage

Hongwei Tao,Xingyu Zhang,Kerui Huang,Tao Chen,Haitao Hu,Zhengyou He,Kangli Wang,Kai Jiang,Sha Li

Nickel sulfide (NiS) offers immense promise as a sodium-ion battery (SIB) anode with its high theoretical capacity, metallic conductivity, and rich redox chemistry, yet its potential is crippled by violent volume fluctuations, sluggish Na + kinetics and polysulfide shuttling. Here, we architect a defect-rich, nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) hollow coral-like carbon scaffold encapsulating NiS nanocrystals (NiS@N-HCC) via a scalable precursor-pyrolysis strategy. The tailored interfacial electronic coupling between NiS and the N-doped carbon realigns charge density and unleashes intrinsic conductivity, while polar defect sites act as powerful chemical anchors to immobilize polysulfides and eradicate shuttle loss. Encasing it all, the conductive hollow network brims with high-affinity Na + docking sites, channels ions through compressed diffusion corridors and absorbs drastic volume surges without fracture. As a result, NiS@N-HCC delivers 410.8 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 (92.5% retention), 357.5 mAh g −1 at 15 A g −1 , and only 0.003% decay per cycle over 3000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . Full cells with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C cathodes reach an energy density of 149.4 Wh kg −1 and a peak power density of 1572.9 W kg −1 , maintaining 82.1% capacity retention over 1600 cycles, while pouch-type devices sustain bright, stable high-power output, propelling NiS@N-HCC to the forefront of next-generation, high-power, long-life sodium-ion energy storage.

A Cation Exchange Strategy to Construct CoNi2S4/NiS Nanoframes Composed of Nanosheets with Improved Specific Capacity and Rate Performance for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Wei Jiang,Xin Cui,Xiaoyang Yang,Zeyi Liu,Zhenqiang Yuan,Haoyu Qiu,Jiafeng Wan,Fangwei Ma

Bimetallic sulfide is an outstanding pseudocapacitive material with high theoretical specific capacitance and good electronic conductivity. Herein, nickel–cobalt bimetallic sulfide (CoNi2S4/NiS) nanoframes composed of thin sheets are synthesized from Ni–Co Prussian blue analogues (NiCo-PBA) by an ion exchange method. The influence of sodium sulfide solution concentration on the morphology and supercapacitor (SC) performances of sulfides is systematically investigated. Benefiting from the unique nanoframe structure composed of nanosheet morphology and bimetallic active sites, the CoNi2S4/NiS-30 electrode displays a high specific capacity of 1243 C g–1 at 1 A g–1 and a high capacity retention rate of 75% when increasing the current density by 20-fold. It is worth emphasizing that the rate performance was improved by 68% compared with that of Ni3S4/NiS before ion exchange. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) exhibits an energy density of 48.6 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 963 W kg–1 and good cycling stability, with a capacity retention rate of 81% after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the all-solid-state supercapacitor (SASC) has an energy density of 46.7 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 1081 W kg–1, and two SASCs connected in series can power an LED for exceeding 4 min. This study offers an innovative strategy to develop high-performance bimetallic sulfides for asymmetric supercapacitors.

In-situ anchored NiS nanoparticles on 3D honeycomb-like N,S dual-doped carbon matrixes as an advanced anode for sodium-ion batteries

Hongwei Li,Jianfeng Liu,Tong Yang,Chenxi Xia,Yayun Zheng,Shasha Wei,Jitao Shang,Wenna Zhang,Xiaolin Liu,Yan Zhao

Devising advanced anode materials with fast reaction dynamics is of vital importance for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, an advanced anode material for SIBs, featuring NiS nanoparticles (NPs) in-situ anchored on 3D honeycomb-like N,S dual-doped carbon matrixes (NiS NPs/3DHL N,S-C), is successfully synthesized by the combination of thermal decomposition and sulfidation methods. The resulting composite shows high surface area, rich pores, excellent conductivity, and ideal structural stability. Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations further confirm that the synergistic interaction between NiS NPs and 3DHL N,S-C induces a downward energy level shift of the S 3 p orbital, effectively boosting Na + desorption and enhancing redox reaction dynamics. When serving as an SIB anode, NiS NPs/3DHL N,S-C achieves a high specific capacity of 457.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , superior cycling stability (retaining 321.8 mAh g −1 after 3000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ), and remarkable rate capability (373.6 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ). The relevant full cell also presents excellent performance with a specific capacity of 265.2 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 50 cycles. This research expands the design paradigm of high-performance transition metal sulfides (TMSs) in SIB anodes

Nevel dual-core shell structure CdS@ZnS@NiS cost-effective counter electrode with remarkably enhanced the performance of quantum-dot sensitized solar cells

Senyang Wang,Shi Tang,Mengting Hua,Yuxuan Chen,Dantian Zhang,Rao Fan,Ling Li

Raspberry-like double-core shell CdS@ZnS@NiS material was prepared to use a simple one-step hydrothermal method, and then coated uniformly on carbon nanofibers (CNFs), resulting in the formation of highly efficient counter electrode (CE) for Zn-Cu-In-Se (ZCISe) quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The QDSSCs used CdS@ZnS@NiS/CNFs as CE reached power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.72 %, which is higher than Cu 2 S/brass (8.42 %). This result indicates the dual-core shell structure possesses better catalytic properties, which indicates that the raspberry-shaped double-core shell CdS@ZnS@NiS is a feasible competitor as CE material for QDSSCs.

Qingli Xu,Wenluan Gao,Miao Wang,Gang Yuan,Xiaona Ren,Rong Zhao,Sida Zhao,Qingfa Wang

To develop earth-abundant and cost-effective catalysts for overall water splitting is still a major challenge. Herein, a unique “raisins-on-bread” Ni–S–P electrocatalyst with NiS and Ni 2 P nanoparticles embedded in amorphous Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets is fabricated on Ni foam by a facile and controllable electrodeposition approach. It only requires an overpotential of 120 mV for HER and 219 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. Employed as the anode and cathode , it demonstrates extraordinary electrocatalytic overall water splitting activity (cell voltage of only 1.58 V @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and ultra-stability (160 h @ 10 mA cm −2 or 120 h @50 mA cm −2 ) in alkaline media . The synergetic electronic interactions, enhanced mass and charge transfers at the heterointerfaces facilitate HER and OER processes. Combined with a silicon PV cell, this Ni–S–P bifunctional catalyst also exhibits highly efficient solar-driven water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 12.5%.

Designing nitrogen-enriched heterogeneous NiS@CoNi2S4 embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon with hierarchical 2D/3D nanocage structure for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution and triiodide reduction

Jiaoe Dang,Sining Yun,Yongwei Zhang,Guangping Yang,Jingjing Yang,Dan Qiao,Tianxiang Yang

Fabrication of efficient non-precious electrocatalysts with hierarchical nanostructures and the desired compositions is highly desirable to enhance the catalytic activity and stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and triiodide reduction reaction (IRR). This work proposes a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) template-based strategy to generate sulfide embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon with a hierarchical 2D/3D nanocage structure. ZIF-67, as a sacrificial template, is first etched to form 2D/3D NiCo layered double hydroxide/2-Methylimidazole (NiCo LDH/MeIm) and then converted to CoNi 2 S 4 nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (CoNi 2 S 4 /NC) through one-step sulfurization and pyrolysis . When a core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 is designed as a template for the generation of Ni@NiCo LDH/MeIm, the obtained NiS@CoNi 2 S 4 /NC not only retains the unique 2D/3D nanostructure but also has a high N content, abundant active sites, larger specific surface area, and hierarchical pore distribution. NiS@CoNi 2 S 4 /NC mediates an overpotential of 126 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 47.2 mV dec -1 in the alkaline HER. The solar cell equipped with NiS@CoNi 2 S 4 /NC as the IRR catalyst achieves a high cell efficiency of 7.96 %. NiS@CoNi 2 S 4 /NC shows durably high HER and IRR activity. This controllable synthetic strategy provides a valuable support for developing efficient catalysts in electrocatalytic energy conversion systems.

Rational construction of hierarchical Ni(OH)2–NiS in-plane edge hybrid nanosheet structures on the carbon cloth as a robust catalyst for electro-oxidation of urea

Hui Wang,Lei Zhang,Huasheng Jiang,Palanisamy Kannan,Rongfang Wang,Palaniappan Subramanian,Shan Ji

Urea, a non-toxic nitrogenous small molecule, is used for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. However, slow kinetics of urea electro-oxidation reaction and finding an optimal catalyst continues to be major challenges. In this study, we report the preparation of hierarchical Ni(OH) 2 –NiS in-plane edge hybrid nanosheets on the carbon cloth surface (Ni(OH) 2 –NiS-CC) as a flexible catalytic electrode by hydrothermal and electroplating processes. The Ni(OH) 2 –NiS-CC substrate is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electro-chemical methods. The developed hierarchical Ni(OH) 2 –NiS-CC nanosheets electrode shows an enhanced electrocatalytic performance (low-onset oxidation potential, rapid reaction kinetics, and higher mass activity) towards urea electro-oxidation than NiS-CC in an alkaline solution. Counting the benefits including superior catalytic activity, conductivity and available more active sites, the hierarchical Ni(OH) 2 –NiS-CC in-plane edge hybrid nanosheets electrode displays urea electro-oxidation with a catalytic current of 87.5 mA at 0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which denotes the remarkable electrocatalytic activity as compared with other Ni based catalysts. This simple and useful electrode fabrication method enables a new route to acquire ultra-fine heterostructured substrates for wide variety of potential applications including direct-urea-fuel-cells (DUFC) and urea-assisted water splitting.

Lotus leaf inspired dual-functional SERS substrate: Ag NIs-decorated PDMS micropillar/wrinkle hierarchical structure for on-site detection of pesticides on fruit surface and in environmental water

Ziyang Bian,Lili Huang,Zetong Li,Jie Wang,Yue Wang,Zhenshan Yang,Hefu Li

The development of versatile surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platforms facilitates the rapid identification of contaminants in diverse application scenarios. Herein, a dual-functional SERS substrate comprising silver nanoislands-decorated micropillar/wrinkle hierarchical structure (Ag NIs@PWHS) on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film was fabricated through an amalgamation of fabrication techniques: soft lithography, surface wrinkling, and magnetron sputtering. The PDMS hierarchical architecture was constructed by replicating mastoid structures of lotus leaves through a two-step molding process, followed by the formation of periodic wrinkles via oxygen plasma treatment. This hierarchical design integrating micropillars and wrinkles not only provided a multiscale surface architecture conducive to the formation of three-dimensional (3D) hot spots, but also conferred hydrophobicity and bending insensitivity on the SERS substrate. The optimal Ag NIs@PWHS substrate had an analytical enhancement factor of 1.99 × 10 6 , outstanding signal uniformity (relative standard deviation, RSD = 2.98 %) and reproducibility (RSD = 4.54 %), and robust mechanical stability. Furthermore, the Ag NIs@PWHS substrate enabled the rapid detection of thiram on pear surface and malachite green in lake water, with a detection sensitivity of 10 −7 M for both pesticides. Thus, the developed Ag NIs@PWHS SERS substrate holds significant potential for utilization in realms of food safety assessments and water pollution surveillance.
