Ice accretion on wind turbine blades severely impacts the power generation efficiency, equipment lifespan, and safe operation of wind farms. Low-interfacial toughness materials have demonstrated potential for large-scale deicing under controlled laboratory conditions. However, their anti-icing and deicing performance in complex and harsh natural fields is rarely studied. Herein, low-interfacial toughness PDMS/SiO 2 coatings are prepared on aluminum plates. Field tests for anti-icing, icephobic, and large-scale deicing are conducted in the high-altitude regions of Southwest China. Fortunately, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating exhibits exceptional anti-icing and icephobic properties. The coating effectively delays the freezing of water droplets and natural ice accretion, significantly reducing icing weight and ice adhesion strength. During natural ice-covering processes, the ultra-low ice adhesion of the PDMS/SiO 2 coating aids in efficient ice shedding through wind and gravity and ensures rapid melting post-icing. Additionally, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating excels in large-scale deicing performance. The constant deicing force, governed by low interfacial toughness, provides robust assurance for efficient large-scale deicing of ice layers of varying sizes under gravity. Moreover, the coating demonstrates stable durability, retaining excellent deicing capabilities during icing/deicing cycles, UV radiation, and high-temperature aging tests. This study lays an experimental foundation for the further research and application of low-interfacial toughness materials.

It was found that, among these chitosan@TiO 2 (Cs@TiO 2 ) composites calcined at different temperatures (200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 °C), the composite calcined at 300 °C (Cs@TiO 2 -300) showed the best adsorption and photocatalytic activity . To eliminate the limitation of recycling catalyst nanoparticles , the PDMS-SiO 2 -Cs@TiO 2 composites with hydrophobic surfaces were prepared for dye degradation by embedding Cs@TiO 2 -300 nanoparticles into a PDMS-SiO 2 sol-gel system. More concretely, with pumice stone as the support of composites, the experiment was carried out in a reaction bed. When pumice stones were used as supports for PDMS-SiO 2 -Cs@TiO 2 composites, compared with its initial concentration, the concentration of dye solution decreased by 36% after 30 h of simulated sunlight irradiation. Additionally, the degradation efficiency of dyes hardly decreased after five cycles. The optical property and surface structure of PDMS-SiO 2 -Cs@TiO 2 were characterized by UV–Vis DRS and XPS , respectively. It is noteworthy that the UV–Vis DRS results indicated that the light absorption range of both Cs@TiO 2 -300 composites and PDMS-SiO 2 -Cs@TiO 2 composites had been broadened to the visible light region. Moreover, the XPS results indicated the existence of nitrogen (N) doped titanium on the surface of PDMS-SiO 2 -Cs@TiO 2 composites.

The combination of microwave absorption performance and self-healing function is of great practical significance. In this paper, first, ZnO@MWCNTs nanoparticle is prepared by loading Zinc oxide (ZnO) on the surface of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as microwave absorbers. Then, the thermoreversible self-healing DA-PDMS is prepared by using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as raw material based on Diels-Alder (DA) reaction. Finally, a kind of novel multifunctional ZnO@MWCNTs/DA-PDMS nanocomposite with self-healing and microwave absorption properties is synthesized with the addition of ZnO@MWCNTs nanoparticle. When the cracked ZnO@MWCNTs/DA-PDMS nanocomposite is maintained at 120 °C for 10 min, it can recover more than 90% of the original mechanical strength . Even after three healing cycles, the ZnO@MWCNTs/DA-PDMS nanocomposite also displays excellent healing efficiency (about 90%). On the other hand, when the content of ZnO@MWCNTs nanoparticle is 10 wt%, ZnO@MWCNTs/DA-PDMS nanocomposite exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth from 8.2 to 12.4 GHz (full X-band) at a thickness of 3 mm and the minimum reflection loss of −20.1 dB. Even after the 3rd healing cycle, the minimum reflection loss of the healed samples can still maintain −20.0 dB at a thickness of 3 mm. ZnO@MWCNTs/DA-PDMS nanocomposite will have good development prospect in the field of intelligence and microwave absorption materials .

Construction of ultra-thin and defect-free separation membrane on inner surface of hollow fiber supports is significant but challenging for molecular separation. In this study, the highly permeable PDMS@ZIF-8/PVDF composite membranes were successfully fabricated upon the inner-surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane for pervaporation (PV) ethanol/water separation. The efficient preparation of hierarchical PDMS@ZIF-8/PVDF composite membranes benefited from the precise regulation of ZIF-8 layer through interfacial synthesis and sequential coating of PDMS matrix. The thickness of the PDMS layer was only 16 ± 2 nm, which admirably eliminated the non-selective defects in ZIF-8 layer. Owning to the optimal combination of MOF layer and ultra-thin polymer layer, the as-prepared membrane exhibited the excellent ethanol flux of 1.34 kg m −2 h −1 with an ethanol concentration in permeate of 31.3 wt% for separating 5 wt% ethanol aqueous solution at 40 °C. The separation performance of the resultant membrane was superior to that of the other ethanol selective PV membranes . These findings herein provided a new way for preparing high-performance hollow fiber composite membranes for PV separation.

Recently, the crude oil spill has brought inevitable harm to the global ecological environment. Due to the high-viscosity crude oil, it is wise to take advantage of the photothermal/electrothermal effects of the membrane to separate the crude oil from the water. However, the functional separation membrane always suffers from low photothermal/electrothermal effects and poor stability. Herein, the vinyl polyvinylidene fluoride/mercapto carbon nanotubes@vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PVDF-a/CNT-s@PDMS) membrane with fast photothermal/electrothermal effects and organic absorption property was successfully prepared by electrospinning and multi-layer loading method. The prepared PVDF-a/CNT-s@PDMS membrane resisted a variety of liquids and had stable superhydrophobicity (WCA = 156°). Furthermore, the membrane maintained superhydrophobicity even suffer from water and milk under the applied voltage condition. After 100 wear resistance tests, the membrane maintained stable superhydrophobicity and the separation rate remained unchanged. The surface temperature of the membrane rapidly approached to the maximum temperature in 30 s, showing a rapid photothermal/electrothermal effects, and the average separation rate of crude oil was 1185 kg m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 . Meanwhile, the membrane exhibited outstanding efficiency for separate immiscible oil-water mixtures. Importantly, the incorporation of the sulfhydryl group enhanced the special ability of the composite membrane to adsorb organic dyes from oil phase. Therefore, the PVDF-a/CNT-s@PDMS membrane has a wide range of potential application in the domain of oil-water separation.

The main motivation of this work was to demonstrate a hollow telescopic rod structure that could be used for minimally invasive surgery. The telescopic rods were fabricated using 3D printing technology to make mold flips. During fabrication, differences in biocompatibility, light transmission, and ultimate displacement were compared between telescopic rods fabricated via different processes, so as to select the appropriate process. To achieve these goals, flexible telescopic rod structures were designed and 3D-printed molds were fabricated using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA) techniques. The results showed that the three molding processes had no impact on the doping of the PDMS specimens. However, the FDM molding process had lower surface flatness accuracy compared to SLA. The SLA mold flip fabrication exhibited superior surface accuracy and light transmission compared to the other methods. The sacrificial template method and the use of HTL direct demolding technique had no significant impact on cellular activity and biocompatibility, but the mechanical properties of the PDMS specimens were weakened after swelling recovery. The height and radius of the hollow rod were found to have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the flexible hollow rod. The hyperelastic model was fitted appropriately with the mechanical test results, and the ultimate elongation increased with an increase in hollow–solid ratios under the uniform force.Keywords:3D-print;mold casting;PDMS;mechanics;flexible telescopic structure;transparency

This work involves the preparation and characterization of poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene)-poly(dimethylsiloxane- co -methylhydrosiloxane) (SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS) crosslinked membranes towards CH 4 /N 2 separation. SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS was synthesized via a simple hydrosilylation reaction with various PDMS-co-PMHS contents. The structure of crosslinked membranes was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , indicating the degree of hydrosilylation reaction. The morphology of sample membranes was observed in detail by means of Scanning Electron Microscope analysis . Thermodynamic stability and the crosslinked behavior of crosslinked membranes were explored by thermogravimetric analysis and Soxhlet extraction experiments. Furthermore, single gas (CH 4 , N 2 ) permeability was measured using the time-lag method. The CH 4 permeability of crosslinked membranes with 70 wt% PDMS-co-PMHS could reach 503 Barrer at 25 °C and 1 bar, which is significantly greater than that of SIS (25.9 Barrer), while the CH 4 /N 2 ideal selectivity hardly changed. Notably, CH 4 permeability further improved by 77.6% (893.4 Barrer) as the temperature increased to 55 °C. For the CH 4 /N 2 (50/50 vol%) mixed gas, the SIS-c-PDMS-co-PMHS-70 sample membrane exhibited ideal gas separation performance relative to that of the pure SIS membrane (CH 4 : 447.4 vs. 24.2 Barrer,N 2 : 188.1 vs. 9.46 Barrer).

In this work, a highly efficient surface coating strategy using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified low-cost montmorillonite (MMT) was revealed, to enhance the surface performance and durability of magnesium substrates. Contact angle, self-cleaning, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and ultrabroadband electromagnetic absorption and EMI shielding evaluations were comprehensively studied. The obtained PDMS/MMT/Mg substrate consistently exhibited an obvious increased contact angle from 76.1 to 141.9 °, signifying strong hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties compared to the untreated R-Mg substrate. No significant surface wettability changes were detected even after 50 times of tape peeling or 3.0 wt% NaCl solution immersion for 60 h, indicating high durability of the protective PDMS/MMT coatings. Moreover, the PDMS/MMT/Mg substrates can be applied as microwave-absorbing materials, particularly in high-frequency applications, and as excellent EMI shielding with an SE value above 40 dB. This study highlights the effectiveness of the relatively inexpensive PDMS/MMT coating in enhancing the performance of magnesium substrates, providing a new approach to balance cost control and meet performance requirements in industrial or large-scale production.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been used in microfluidic systems for years, as it can be easily structured and its flexibility makes it easy to integrate actuators including pneumatic pumps. In addition, the good optical properties of the material are well suited for analytical systems. In addition to its positive aspects, PDMS is well known to adsorb small molecules, which limits its usability when it comes to drug testing, e.g., in organ-on-a-chip (OoC) systems. Therefore, alternatives to PDMS are in high demand. In this study, we use thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) films thermally bonded to laser-cut poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sheets to build up multilayered microfluidic devices with integrated pneumatic micro-pumps. We present a low-cost manufacturing technology based on a conventional CO2laser cutter for structuring, a spin-coating process for TPE film fabrication, and a thermal bonding process using a pneumatic hot-press. UV treatment with an Excimer lamp prior to bonding drastically improves the bonding process. Optimized bonding parameters were characterized by measuring the burst load upon applying pressure and via profilometer-based measurement of channel deformation. Next, flow and long-term stability of the chip layout were measured using microparticle Image Velocimetry (uPIV). Finally, human endothelial cells were seeded in the microchannels to check biocompatibility and flow-directed cell alignment. The presented device is compatible with a real-time live-cell analysis system.Keywords:organ-on-a-chip;micro-pneumatics;PDMS-free;thermoplastic elastomers;layer-by-layer manufacturing

Membrane technology can reduce the energy consumption of alcohol/water separation process, while the membrane performance still needs to be improved. This study reports a fluoride-mediated hydrophobic zeolite incorporated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane for highly selective separating ethanol from aqueous solution. A fluoride-assisted synthesis strategy was proposed to achieve synergistic control over the morphology and surface chemical properties of siliceous zeolites. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that fluoride-mediated MFI zeolite (F-MFI) possessed significantly lower silanol density and superior hydrophobicity compared to conventional hydroxide-synthesized MFI zeolite (Si-MFI), thereby improving the selective permeation of ethanol over water. The optimal F-MFI nanoplates (∼150 nm thickness) with high crystallinity were uniformly incorporated into the PDMS membrane, achieving outstanding performance for separating 5 wt% ethanol/water mixture at 40 °C (total flux of 1409 g m −2 h −1 and a separation factor of 19.7—approximately twice that of the pure PDMS membrane). This work provides a high-performance ethanol-selective membrane, and also demonstrates the importance of synthesis condition on the morphology and functionality of filler and the performance of resulting mixed-matrix membrane.

The development of high-performance polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the recovery of ethyl acetate (EtAc) from low-concentration aqueous solutions remains a challenge in the pervaporation field. In this study, ionic-liquids-decorated halloysite nanotubes (ILs@HNTs) composites, which were precisely designed and prepared using a tandem modification strategy, were embedded into PDMS matrix to fabricate MMMs for the permselective pervaporation of EtAc. The results revealed that the ILs incorporated within the lumens and onto the external surfaces of HNTs not only exhibited excellent compatibility with PDMS, but also created permselective diffusion channels for EtAc. Benefit from the synergistic effect of highly permeable HNTs lumens and highly selective ILs, the resultant MMM loaded with 15 wt% ILs@HNTs presented a remarkable separation factor (341) and high flux (925 g m −2 h −1 ) for the separation of 1 wt% EtAc aqueous solutions at 30 °C. These values were 2.10 and 1.45 times higher, respectively, than those of pristine PDMS membranes. Furthermore, the molecular simulations conducted to analyze the permeation behavior of guest molecules in the HNTs lumens provided theoretical support for the pervaporation experimental results. Moreover, the effects of ILs grafting degree, filler loading, feed temperature, and feed concentration on the pervaporation performance of the fabricated MMMs were systematically investigated. The unique modification method developed in this study can be expanded to other tubular materials and provide valuable guidelines for designing high-performance membrane structures.

Conventional temperature–pressure bifunctional sensors based on thermoresistive and piezoresistive effects could not meet the growing demand for detecting multiple signals due to their intractable signal-coupling problems. It is imperative to develop new approaches to detect multiple stimuli with single devices without complex decoupling processes. Herein, integrated temperature and pressure dual-mode sensors are fabricated by decorating elastic polydopamine-modified PDMS (PDA@PDMS) foam with thermoelectric PEDOT:PSS/carbon nanotube (CNT) components. The resultant PEDOT:PSS/CNT@PDA@PDMS (PCPP) sensor exhibits an accurate temperature sensing capability with an ultrahigh Seebeck coefficient of 40.5 μV K−1 and an ultralow detectable temperature of 0.05 K. Thanks to the elastic and porous PDMS foam and the thermoelectric PEDOT:PSS/CNT components, the PCPP sensor can detect both static and dynamic pressures with high sensitivity, fast response time, a wide detection range, and excellent durability. Notably, under the simultaneous stimulation of both temperature and pressure, the dual-mode PCPP sensor can convert these two stimuli to independent voltage and resistance signals on the basis of thermoelectric and piezoresistive effects. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric effect endows the sensor with human energy harvesting capacity by exploiting the temperature gradients between human skin and the environment. All these characteristics make the dual-mode PCPP sensor promising for wearable electronic skin applications.
