The weak interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a longstanding problem that hinders the applications of CF/PEEK composites. To solve this problem, a mixture sizing agent containing hydroxylated boron nitride (BNO) and polyetherimide (PEI) is synthesized to coat CF. In this study, BNO is synthesized via the liquid exfoliation method. The interfacial adhesion between CF and PEEK is improved using a mixture sizing layer of BNO and PEI on CF. The synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding , π-π interaction and good compatibility are evaluated to remarkably increase the miscibility and mechanical interlocking, ultimately enhancing the thermal conductivity , mechanical and tribological properties. Therefore, the PEI-BNO sizing layer on CF has proven to have great potential for high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

The weak interfacial bonding between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has constrained the mechanical performance and multifunctional potential of the CF reinforced PEEK composites. To overcome this challenge, an environmentally sustainable surface modification strategy for CF was developed, leveraging the synergy of cross-dimensional nanomaterials. Unlike conventional approaches where conductive carbon black (CB) is dispersed in resin matrices, this work pioneers the use of surface-charge-modified CB for direct fiber interfacial enhancement. Using the electrostatic self-assembly method, two-dimensional negatively charged MXene nanosheets and zero-dimensional positively charged conductive CB particles were precisely anchored onto the CF surface through electrostatic interactions. The innovative synergy of the cross-dimensional dual nanomaterials simultaneously enhanced the mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties of the CF/PEEK composites. Compared with the unmodified CF/PEEK composite, the maximum improvements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite after modification were 73.4 %, 47.72 %, and 60.27 %, respectively. This is achieved through the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking, electrostatic interactions, van der Waals forces, along with hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the optimal electromagnetic shielding performance of the modified composite reached 31.04 dB at the X-band, representing an increase of 33.56 %, which can mainly be ascribed to the uniform distribution of nanomaterials that enhance the conduction loss and multiple reflections. This scalable and eco-friendly pathway holds considerable application potential for constructing integrated structural-functional CF/PEEK composites.

The escalating demand for multifunctionality in carbon fiber reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (CF/PEEK) composites has intensified the need for next-generation structural materials. However, achieving a synergistic integration of functional performance and structural integrity—rather than a trade-off—remains a critical challenge. Herein, tetrapod-shaped ZnO whiskers decorated with 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (T-ZnO@MXene) were fabricated via electrostatic self-assembly and incorporated into CF/PEEK composites. This 3D conductive/enhanced network enabled the simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and electrothermal deicing capabilities. The optimized CF/T-ZnO@MXene/PEEK composites exhibited a flexural strength of 1970.0 MPa, a flexural modulus of 142.3 GPa, and an interlaminar shear strength of 123.2 MPa, representing improvements of 33.4 %, 45.1 %, and 56.7 % over pristine CF/PEEK, respectively. Concurrently, the through-thickness electrical conductivity surged for 7.7 S/m, corresponding to a 76-fold enhancement, while the EMI shielding effectiveness attained 56.7 dB (a 40.7 % increase). In addition, the composites demonstrated efficient electrothermal conversion and reliable deicing performance. Overall, this work provides an effective route to harmonize structural robustness with multifunctional capabilities in CF/PEEK composites, opening new opportunities for advanced aerospace applications.

Intelligent control of the immune response is essential for obtaining percutaneous implants with good sterilization and tissue repair abilities. In this study, polypyrrole (Ppy) nanoparticles enveloping a 3D frame of sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SP) surface are constructed, which enhance the surface modulus and hardness of the sulfonated layer by forming a cooperative structure of simulated reinforced concrete and exhibit a superior photothermal effect. Ppy-coated SP could quickly accumulate heat on the surface by responding to 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, thereby killing bacteria, and destroying biofilms. Under NIR stimulation, the phagocytosis and M1 activation of macrophages cultured on Ppy-coated SP are enhanced by activating complement 3 and its receptor, CD11b. Phagocytosis and M1 activation are impaired along with abolishment of NIR stimulation in the Ppy-coated SP group, which is favorable for tissue repair. Ppy-coated SP promotes Collagen-I, vascular endothelial growth factor, connective tissue growth factor, and α -actin (Acta2) expression by inducing M2 polarization owing to its higher surface modulus. Overall, Ppy-coated SP with enhanced mechanical properties could be a good candidate for clinical percutaneous implants through on-off phagocytosis and switchable macrophage activation stimulated with NIR.

Achieving simple and efficient interfacial modification between carbon fiber and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been the pursuit of researchers. In this study, by comparing the nucleophilicity of various aromatic amines, a direct Schiff base reaction with polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been achieved. Based on this, a “grafting-bridging” bifunctional diazonium salt containing a phenylethylamine structure was designed and synthesized to enhance the interfacial strength through covalent bonding without the use of sizing agents. The diazonium salt was grafted onto the surface of carbon fiber through electrochemical reduction, while the PEEK resin and phenylethylamine could achieve bridging through heat treatment, thus a PEEK/CF interface with enhanced covalent bonds was constructed. The reaction and conversion rate between phenylethylamine and PEEK resin were confirmed through IR and NMR. The successful grafting of the diazonium salt on the carbon fiber was determined through XPS and cyclic voltammetry. The bridging reaction on the surface of carbon fiber was verified through XPS and the use of 6F-PEEK with characteristic elements. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the modified PEEK/CF interface reached 86.2 MPa, representing a 102.8 % improvement compared to the untreated interface of 42.5 MPa, fully demonstrating the excellent effect of the bifunctional diazonium salt.

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) provide a reliable approach for achieving lightweight in high-speed aerospace vehicles. However, the weak interfacial properties between metals and composites could significantly affect the deformation and failure modes of FMLs. In this paper, the low-velocity impact responses and damage mechanisms of CF/PEEK-Ti hybrid laminates with nano-interfacial enhancement by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were characterized and analyzed. The post-impact residual tensile strengths (RTS) were investigated experimentally using quasi-static uniaxial tests combined with digital image correlation , and were evaluated theoretically by developing an analytical prediction model that considers the internal thermal stress and dent geometry. Results show that the initial delamination thresholds of force and displacement during impact can be effectively increased via interfacial enhancement of CNT network. By using a 5% decrease in RTS retention rate as a criterion for damage tolerance, a significant strength decrease starts to appear at 3 J for the sandblasted-only laminates, which is improved to 10 J for the laminates with nano-interfacial enhancement. The proposed unified constitutive model can yield an acceptable prediction for RTS and failure strain of the hybrid laminate after impact, providing a guidance for the structural design and engineering applications of FMLs.

In recent years, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) MXene nanoparticles have been used to improve the interface performance of high modulus carbon fiber (HMCF) composites. However, the traditional cathodic electrophoretic deposition technique causes carbon fibers to oxidize, which affects the strength of the carbon fibers themselves. The unstable and easily decomposable characteristics of MXene nanosheets particularly limit the effectiveness of improving the interface performance of thermoplastic polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites. This study adopts the cathodic electrophoretic deposition process to reduce the damage to carbon fibers; it introduces a temperature-resistant antioxidant polyethyleneimine (PEI), and combines MXene with it through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions to prepare a water-based PEI/MXene nanoparticle dispersion with positive surface charge and excellent thermal stability. These nanoparticles meet the requirements of the cathodic electrophoretic deposition process and the processing of HMCF/PEEK composites. The surface energy of PXM-HMCF is 174.93 % higher than that of D-HMCF. PMX provides a rigid mechanical locking structure at the interface and a flexible modulus transition layer, which increases the interlayer shear strength (ILSS) of PMX-HMCF/PEEK composites to 70.66 MPa, which is 63.22 % higher than that of D-HMCF/PEEK (43.29 MPa). The bending strength of PMX-HMCF/PEEK composites also increases by 22.77 %.

3D-printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds are developed as novel bone substitutes, however, their bioinert surface hinders osteogenesis and modifying PEEK scaffolds without blocking their inter-connected porous structure is challenged. In this study, 45S5 bioactive glasses (BG) were homogeneously coated on PEEK scaffolds inspired by traditional sand-casting. The structure of PEEK scaffolds was preserved under shaping effect of BG fillers. Modulus, coating yield and hydrophilicity of scaffolds after different thermal treatment time were comparatively investigated. Excellent hydroxyapatite-forming ability of BG-coated scaffolds was confirmed by mineralization study. In-vitro assessments, BG-coated scaffolds cultured with MC3T3-E1 cells presented potential as bone implants with excellent cytocompatibility and osteogenic properties. Following similar coating strategy, conductive particles, multi-component particles and template particles were also coated on PEEK surface. The proposed methodology highlights a useful approach towards producing tunable biomedical coatings and microstructure on porous PEEK scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), as a promising alternative for hard tissue implant, still has limitations in anti-pathogens for coping with the clinical challenge. To reverse this situation, CoFe 2 O 4 /MXene nanosheets modified hydrogel was spin-coated on PEEK mediated by polydopamine to endow PEEK with favorable anti-bacterial activity. The modified PEEK implant exhibits the property of photothermal therapy (PTT) for local heat, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) for reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation to realize robust anti-pathogens. The antibacterial effect can be further enhanced by glutathione (GSH) consumption owing to the glutathione peroxides (GPx)-mimetic activity of CM2. In addition, we investigated the specific effects of the designed materials on bacteria, and the experimental results showed that constructed CM2 can lead to the DNA and protein of bacterial leakage and ATP synthesis decreased, ultimately eliminating more than 99% of bacteria. Furthermore, the sample exhibits favorable blood and cell compatibility with broad prospects in clinical application. Overall, a hydrogel coating-PEEK system with robust antibacterial properties has been manufactured in our work, which can not only exhibit compatibility, but also effectively avoid implant-related infection, which shows great promise for infectious bone defect repairment.

Permittivity is a key parameter characterising the polarisation capacity of a dielectric, and directly influences a material’s signal transmission and energy storage properties. As electronic devices evolve towards higher frequencies and greater integration, there is an increasing demand for polymer materials that combine low dielectric constant with excellent thermal and environmental stability. In this study, a aluminium-based metal-organic framework material CAU-10-H, which exhibits negative thermal expansion, was synthesised using the hydrothermal method and incorporated into PEEK matrix by hot-press to prepare CAU-10-H/PEEK composite films. The as-obtained CAU-10-H is relatively well dispersed within the PEEK matrix at low-to-moderate filler loadings, while its incorporation is associated with a reduction in the dielectric constant of the composite. The reduced dielectric response is mainly attributed to the introduction of low-polarity nanoporous domains, while the increase in free volume fraction may also contribute to this behaviour. When the filler content is 5 wt%, the composite exhibits a low die This may be attributed to the following factors:lectric constant across the 2–18 GHz frequency range, with an average value as low as 2.45, whilst the thermal decomposition temperature is above 500℃. In addition, this composite material offers moisture resistance, excellent dimensional stability, outstanding frequency stability and good signal integrity. This study provides new insights into the regulation of the high-frequency dielectric properties and stability of polymer composites using microporous materials with negative thermal expansion characteristics. Download: Download high-res image (181KB) Download: Download full-size image Owing to the inherent microporous structure of MOFs and their interaction with the polymer matrix, this composite material achieves a dual reduction in both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss at high frequencies, whilst exhibiting excellent thermal stability and superior moisture resistance.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a widely used implant material, has attracted the attention of scientific researchers because of its bone-matched elastic modulus, radiolucency, and chemical resistance. However, the bioinert chemical properties of PEEK do not promote bone apposition once implanted. In this study, using a phase-transitioned lysozyme (PTL) nanofilm as a sandwiched layer, a robust hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating on PEEK (HAp@PTL@PEEK) is constructed. The PTL nanofilm shows strong adhesion to the PEEK surface and induces biomimetic mineralization to form a compact HAp coating on PEEK in simulated body fluids. This HAp coating not only shares a higher adhesion strength and better stability but can also be applied to implants with complex 3D structures. HAp@PTL@PEEK showed significantly enhanced osteogenic capacity when cultured with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by promoting initial cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation in vitro. In vivo evaluations utilizing models of femoral condyle defects and skull defects confirm that the HAp coating substantially augments bone remodeling and osseointegration ability. Compared with the traditional method, our modified method is simpler, more environmentally friendly, and uses less hazardous components. Furthermore, the obtained HAp coating shares a higher adhesion strength to PEEK and a better osteogenic capacity. The study offers a novel method to improve the osseointegration of PEEK-based implants in biointerfaces and tissue engineering.
