Preparation and Properties of Heparin-Loaded PTFE Fiber Film-Coated Airway Stent

Jinming Zhang,Yiyang Xu,Dongfang Wang,Qian Li

After implantation in vivo, airway stents are prone to negative biological effects, such as platelet adhesion, aggregation, and blood coagulation, which may lead to vascular occlusion and thrombosis. Therefore, when studying the antithrombotic properties of vascular grafts, it is crucial to construct a fiber film-coated airway stent with antithrombotic properties. In this paper, PTFE/TPU fiber film was prepared by emulsion electrospinning, and heparin aldehyde group was modified to covalently graft with the fiber film to obtain heparin-loaded fiber film (Hep-PT fiber film), and a heparin-loaded PTFE fiber film-coated airway stent (Hep-PT fiber film-coated airway stent) was prepared. Covalent grafting improves the stability of heparin and promotes the long-term stable release of heparin. The loading of heparin increases the fiber nodes between the fiber films, increases the friction between the fibers, and improves the mechanical properties and ability of the fiber film to resist external forces. At the same time, the Hep-PT fiber film-coated airway stent exhibits excellent cytocompatibility, making it an ideal candidate system for airway stent materials.

Effects of LaF3/CeF3 on the friction transfer of PTFE-based composites

Ting Xie,Yaru Shi

The friction transfer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites is closely related to their tribological performances . To clarify the effects of LaF 3 /CeF 3 on the friction transfer of PTFE-based composites, the transfer film thickness and coverage were investigated under different loads or speeds. The results show that the addition of LaF 3 /CeF 3 can decrease the transfer film thickness and increase the transfer film coverage to form a thin and uniform transfer film, and the co-filling of LaF 3 and CeF 3 is better in promoting friction transfer of PTFE-based composites than single addition of LaF 3 or CeF 3 . The correlation between transfer film and tribological properties was also analyzed, which indicates that the friction transfer is beneficial for improving the tribological properties of PTFE composites.

A highly stable reinforced PEM assisted by resveratrol and polydopamine-treated PTFE

Youxiu Huo,Qingbing Li,Zhiyan Rui,Rui Ding,Jia Liu,Jia Li,Jianguo Liu

The need to reduce the cost of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) leads to less usage of perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA), which would definitely result in a decline in the membrane lifespan under the attack of free radicals. In this study, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is used as a reinforced material to make a thinner composite membrane due to the poor mechanical strength of the pristine membrane. Moreover, a polydopamine (PD)-treated strategy was selected to make hydrophilic PTFE, which allows the adoption of a high-boiling point solvent for the dissolution of resveratrol , a natural antioxidant produced by plants that acts as a free radical scavenger (FRS) in the membrane to prevent the membrane from being attacked. With the help of dimethyl formamide (DMF), a high-boiling point solvent, and hydrophilic groups in PD molecules, a Nafion/PD@PTFE/resveratrol composite membrane with a thickness of 10 μm was prepared and tested using an accelerated degradation test (ADT) strategy. With a resveratrol dose of 1 wt%, the cell presented a lower hydrogen crossover of 2.82 mA cm −2 and a longer lifespan than those of a membrane without resveratrol while cell performance did not suffer too much damage. In the ADT experiment, the hydrogen crossover of Nafion/PD@PTFE/resveratrol was still less than 20 mA cm −2 after 8 open circuit voltage (OCV) cycles, while that without resveratrol increased to 80 mA cm −2 in 3 OCV cycles.

Long-Term Stability of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Hollow Fiber Membranes for CO2 Capture

Hongyan Tang,Yi Zhang,Feng Wang,Huapeng Zhang,Yuhai Guo

Membrane wetting is the main obstacle for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture on long-term operation. In order to understand wetting, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated through paste extrusion, stretching, and sintering processes. CO2 capture performance over 180 days was performed. It indicates no obvious deterioration of CO2 flux over 180 days. Subsequently, further investigation was performed through immersion of PTFE hollow fiber membranes in different absorbent solutions. Results of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and variations of membrane weight showed the PTFE polymer kept good stability in the absorbent solutions over 24 weeks. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicated the pore sizes of the PTFE hollow fiber membranes did not markedly enlarge during immersion, which was proved by pore size distributions. Contact angle measurements indicated no obvious reduction (8° reduction) in the membrane hydrophobicity over 24 weeks. Values of the contact angle relied on the surface tension values of the absorbent solutions. AFM images showed that immersion imposed a negative influence on the roughness values, which was the same order as the contact angle. The results suggested that none of the absorbent molecules entered the interior of the PTFE polymer. PTFE hollow fiber membranes may be a promising alternative for CO2 capture on long-term operation.

Dip-coating prepared nickel-foam composite cathodes with hydrophobic layer for atenolol elimination in electro-Fenton system

Xiuping Sun,Guifang Pan,Haiqiang Qi,Zhirong Sun

The nickel ions (Ni 2+ ) leaching is a crucial issue that must be considered when using nickel-foam (NF) as the electrode material . Here, the NF composite cathode (CNTs-nafion/NF/PTFE) was fabricated by the facile dip-coating process for the atenolol (ATL) elimination in electro-Fenton (EF) system. The preparation conditions and experimental variables were investigated and optimized. The introduction of PTFE hydrophobic layer not only greatly enhanced H 2 O 2 electro-generation, but also effectively controlled the Ni 2+ leaching under the acidic condition (pH = 3). Remarkably, CNTs-nafion/NF/PTFE exhibited a comparatively excellent stability and low Ni 2+ leaching amount (0.035 ppm) after six consecutive cycles. And the composite cathode showed favorable performance in 20 mg L − 1 ATL degradation using 0.4 mM Fe 2+ under current density 9 mA cm − 2 and initial pH 3.0, achieving 100% degradation efficiency within 30 min and 41.7% TOC removal rate within 120 min. Further, it was confirmed that hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and superoxide anions ( O 2 ) were considered to be active substances in the EF system, and OH played the predominant role. Also, the reasonable degradation mechanism and reaction pathways of ATL in the EF process were proposed. Overall, the facile preparation procedure and the lower Ni 2+ leaching amount make the NF composite cathode a practicable alternative to carbonaceous materials in the EF system.

Novel CeO2@Cu/PTFE tribocatalysis system with high efficiency for organic pollutant degradation

Yu Su,Bo Zhang,Xiang Cheng,Kun Du,Leqing Feng,Wei Zhao

Herein, a novel sunlight-independent tribocatalytic system with efficient friction energy harvesting capability is proposed. This system demonstrates enhanced tribocatalytic performance of cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles driven by the friction between Cu coated on the glass beaker bottom and a Teflon (PTFE) magnetic disk. An apparent rate constant of 0.045 min −1 was achieved for methylene blue (MB) degradation, representing a 2.7-fold improvement over the CeO 2 @glass/PTFE system (0.01682 min −1 ). Notably, the system achieved > 90% degradation efficiency for high-concentration MB solutions (40 mg/L), surpassing the performance of previously reported tribocatalytic systems. Through multiscale tribo-interface characterization and radical trapping experiments, the synergistic catalytic mechanism was elucidated: Friction-induced charge carriers in CeO 2 are efficiently transferred via the interfacial electronic effects of the Cu/PTFE friction couple and the active surface with Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox couples. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that Cu coating modification on the surface of the beaker bottom enhanced hydroxyl radical (·OH) yield by 2.3-fold compared to glass, enabling complete pollutant degradation through hole (h + )-dominated oxidation pathways. This work transcends conventional catalyst modification strategies, establishing a new paradigm for interface engineering in mechano-chemical energy conversion systems.

Superhydrophobic through-pore PI/PTFE aerogels enable high-temperature W/O emulsion separation

Kaixuan Sun,Yumin Sun,Huanru Wang,Pu Zhang,Yanyang Wang,Xutong Han,Xiongfei Du,Qinglin Huang

We report a freeze-templated, through-pore PI/PTFE aerogel that integrates a PTFE-impregnated superhydrophobic interface (water contact angle ≈ 156°) with an open, percolating architecture engineered for hot W/O emulsion separation. Under a modest driving pressure (ΔP = 0.02 MPa), the aerogel delivers high oil fluxes and > 99.5 % separation efficiency across a broad operating window (25–90 °C, pH 1–14). At 90 °C, fluxes exceed 3800 LMH (soybean-oil emulsions) and 1360 LMH (vacuum-pump-oil emulsions) while maintaining ≥ 99.5 % rejection; 30-cycle tests confirm durability with ethanol-rinse regeneration and minimal performance drift. The aerogel’s low thermal conductivity (≈ 0.048–0.074 W·m −1 ·K −1 ) additionally mitigates heat loss during hot-emulsion processing. These results demonstrate a scalable route to high-throughput, chemically and thermally robust W/O emulsion remediation.

CO2 Desorption by Hydrophilic PTFE Hollow Fiber Membranes via a Membrane Flash Process

Peng Peng Lv,Feng Wang,Yu Hai Guo,Hong Yan Tang

In this study, hydrophilic PTFE hollow fiber membranes were prepared and applied for CO2 desorption via a membrane flash process, which is a new CO2 desorption process by utilizing waste thermal energy. The methyldiethanolamine was selected as the absorbent. Effects of the flashing temperature, flashing pressure, rich solution flow rate and MDEA concentration on CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux were deeply investigated. The results show that flashing temperature is positive to the CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux. However, the flashing pressure, rich solution flow rate and MDEA concentration are negative to the CO2 release ratio and CO2 desorption flux.

Small-Sized, Lightweight, and Flexible Triboelectric Nanogenerator Enhanced by PTFE/PDMS Nanocomposite Electret

Ze Bin Li,Hua Yang Li,You Jun Fan,Lu Liu,Yang Hui Chen,Chi Zhang,Guang Zhu

The rapid development of flexible and wearable electronics calls for a sustainable solution of the power supply. In recent years, the energy-harvesting triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted increasing attentions due to its sustainability, flexibility, and versatility. However, achieving both high electric output and flexibility at the same time remains to be a challenge. In this work, we reported a corona charging enhanced flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (EF-TENG) to harvest mechanical energy from human motions. The EF-TENG relied on the repeated contacts between a poly(tetrafluoroethylene)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) nanocomposite electret and a nanofibers/AgNWs electrode on arrayed silicone pyramids. When the EF-TENG (3.5 × 3.5 cm2) was pressed, the open-circuit voltage (Voc), the short-circuit current (Isc), and the power density could reach 275 V, 9.5 μA, and 802.31 mW/m2, respectively. The Voc of the EF-TENG was improved by 244% compared to the device of which the electret was not corona charged. Major factors that affected the electric output of the EF-TENG were discussed, including the height of the pyramids, the configuration of the pyramids array, and the properties of the electret nanocomposite. The EF-TENG only had an overall thickness of 1.3 mm and a weight of 1.7 g, making it especially suitable to be attached onto human body for harvesting mechanical energy from biomechanical motions.

Fabrication of a Ceramic Membrane with Antifouling PTFE Coating for Gas-Absorption Desulfurization

Peng Xu,Zhihao Jin,Tianyu Zhang,Xianfu Chen,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

The composition of ship exhaust gas is complex and a great challenge to the long-term stability of a membrane contactor. In this work, a facile method for constructing a functional surface on an alumina membrane substrate was realized for antiparticle or antidust adhesion in the process of exhaust-gas desulfurization. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanoparticles were dispersed, coated, and thermally sintered on the outer surface of an alumina membrane substrate to obtain a robust defect-free layer that exhibited hydrophobicity and a low friction coefficient. The PTFE coating served as a protective layer with low surface energy, low surface roughness, and a low coefficient of friction, which reduced the adhesion of foulants and facilitated their release. Meanwhile, the porous alumina substrate, wetted by an ammonia solution, still achieved excellent membrane absorption performance for SO2. In desulfurization and antiparticle testing, the PTFE-coated membrane not only showed the same absorption performance as the original membrane but also demonstrated greater resistance to particle adhesion in a dusty environment throughout 12 h of testing. These results indicated that the designed membrane can be utilized for gas absorption in a dusty environment.

Ultrastable Hydrophilic PTFE Membranes via PFAS-Free EVOH-SiO2-Surfactant Interfacial Co-Assembly

Xingyu Liu,Chan Dong,Jingang Zhang,Jingxia Qian,Jean-Marie Basset,Dongping Sun,Lu Zhou

A fluorine-free hydrophilic coating was fabricated on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes using sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), nano-silica (SiO 2 ), and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) through a simple immersion–drying process. The modification aimed to improve membrane wettability, permeability, and chemical stability. FTIR, XPS, SEM, and AFM analyses confirmed the formation of a uniform organic–inorganic composite coating. AFM further showed that the characteristic granular morphology and surface roughness changed little after immersion in acidic, alkaline, and oxidative solutions, indicating good nanoscale structural stability under harsh conditions. At the optimal composition (SDBS:SiO 2 :EVOH = 2:1:1), the water contact angle decreased from 124.8° for pristine PTFE to 60.6°, while the pure water flux reached 3727.99 L m −2 h −1 . The modified membrane also exhibited high flux recovery after bovine serum albumin fouling, with a flux recovery ratio of 92.3%. In oil–water separation tests, the membrane achieved separation efficiencies above 98% and maintained stable performance during three consecutive filtration cycles. In addition, stable wettability and permeation performance were retained after 1-week immersion in solutions ranging from pH 1–14. The results indicate that the EVOH-stabilized SiO 2 /SDBS coating provides an effective, PFAS-free, and scalable strategy for preparing durable hydrophilic PTFE membranes under harsh operating conditions.

Comparison analysis of combustion performance and mechanism of Al/PVDF and Al/PTFE

Xinyue Fei,Jiang Liu,Yunlan Sun,Minggao Xu,Baozhong Zhu

Although both aluminum/polyvinylidene fluoride (Al/PVDF) and aluminum/polytetrafluoroethylene (Al/PTFE) systems exhibit excellent combustion performance, the study on comparing their combustion behaviors and the underlying mechanisms responsible for their differences are still relatively limited. Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of the Al/PVDF and Al/PTFE systems were compared through ignition experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The Al/PTFE system exhibits higher combustion intensity, and the characteristic is attributed to the higher fluorine (F) content in PTFE, which triggers more Al-F reactions. In contrast, the Al/PVDF system exhibits a lower ignition delay time and higher combustion heat, which is attributed to the relatively lower initial decomposition temperature, the higher hydrogen (H) content, and the higher combustion heat in PVDF. Compared to oxygen (O) atoms, H atoms can penetrate the oxide film on the surface of Al particles more rapidly and react with the inner Al atoms, thereby reducing the temperature required for Al atoms to break through the oxide film and participate in reactions.
