Developing durable and active catalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a central challenge for water electrolysis. Here, we demonstrate that constructing supported p−n junctions provides an effective strategy to simultaneously couple interfacial water activation with active-site stabilization. RuO2 nanoparticles immobilized on oxygen vacancy-rich TiO2 nanoribbons (RuO2/TiO2NRs) form a robust p−n heterojunction whose built-in field directs charge separation and tunes interfacial energetics. TiO2 acts as a water-activation co-catalyst, facilitating H2O dissociation at the junction, while structural confinement and charge redistribution suppress Ru over-oxidation and dissolution. A transient potential scanning technique directly visualizes the interfacial charge storage and release behaviors, providing dynamic evidence for the built-in electric field of the p−n junction in regulating charge separation and water-dissociation kinetics. Theoretical calculations reveal electron enrichment on Ru, weakened *OH/*O adsorption, and a reduced barrier for the potential-determining *O → *OOH step, while differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms an adsorbate-evolution mechanism without lattice oxygen participation. Consequently, RuO2/TiO2NRs deliver an overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and sustain a ∼650 h durability. This heterojunction-guided loading strategy unifies activity and acid durability by co-engineering charge transfer and water activation at oxide/oxide interfaces.

The large-scale commercialization of low-cost Ru-based catalysts in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) is fundamentally hindered by structural degradation through lattice oxygen oxidation (LOM) pathways during the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To address this challenge, we present an interfacial engineering strategy for the construction of a ruthenium-cerium oxide heterostructure (RuO2/xCeO2) via a facile impregnation-pyrolysis method. Morphological and electronic structure characterizations confirm the formation of heterojunction interfaces between RuO2 and CeO2. The developed RuO2/0.5CeO2 catalyst achieves an overpotential of 214 mV and maintains negligible activity loss over 550 h at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) employing RuO2/0.5CeO2 as the anode delivers 1.59 V at 1 A cm−2 with over 300 h durability at 500 mA cm−2, showcasing its practicality for PEMWE. Electronic structure analysis confirms that interfacial charge transfer lowers the oxidation state of Ru species and diminishes the lattice oxygen content. Catalytic mechanism investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the formation of a heterointerface induces a transition in RuO2 from a hybrid mechanism to an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM)-dominated OER pathway, lowering the energy barrier of the rate-determining step while suppressing lattice oxygen participation, synergistically enhancing activity and durability. This work proposes an effective strategy for designing highly active and durable ruthenium-based catalysts.

A Mn-doped RuO 2 /Ru heterojunction was synthesized, featuring Mn-RuO 2 nanoparticles anchored onto metallic Ru nanospheres. • Through the interfacial charge transfer from Ru to RuO 2 effectively suppresses the formation of soluble RuO 4 2− species. • Mn doping further optimizes the electron density at the ruthenium sites, endowing them with an appropriate adsorption configuration. • The weakened Ru O bond covalency is key to inhibit the degradative LOM pathway in favor of the more stable AEM. • The Mn-RuO 2 /Ru demonstrates superior performance in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , requiring ultra-low overpotentials for OER and HER. The development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for acidic water splitting is paramount for the advancement of sustainable energy conversion technologies. However, the inherent activity-stability trade-off in non‑iridium-based catalysts remains a formidable barrier to commercial deployment. Herein, a Mn-doped RuO 2 /Ru heterojunction catalyst was synthesized by precisely anchoring Mn-doped RuO 2 nanoparticles onto metallic Ru nanospheres. The resulting interfacial electronic modulation facilitates electron transfer from Ru to RuO 2 , thereby stabilizing the high-valent ruthenium intermediates. Simultaneously, Mn doping optimizes the electron density at the Ru active centers to ensure ideal adsorption configurations for reaction intermediates. Evaluated in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , the bifunctional Mn-RuO 2 /Ru catalyst exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic performance, requiring ultra-low overpotentials of only 192 and 52 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Notably, the catalyst sustains continuous OER operation for over 100 h with negligible degradation, demonstrating remarkable structural integrity in highly corrosive media. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil a dual-regulation mechanism. The synergy between the RuO 2 /Ru interface and Mn dopants downshifts the Ru d -band center to balance intermediate adsorption, while simultaneously suppressing the unstable lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) by weakening Ru O bond covalency. When integrated into a symmetric acidic electrolyzer (Mn-RuO 2 /Ru||Mn-RuO 2 /Ru), a cell voltage of just 1.50 V is required to reach 10 mA cm −2 , significantly outperforming the commercial Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark. This work provides a robust electronic engineering strategy for designing sustainable, high-performance noble-metal-lean catalysts for acidic water splitting. The synergy of the heterointerface and Mn dopants optimizes Ru’s electronic structure, preventing over-oxidation and suppressing lattice-oxygen participation, thereby enabling exceptional acidic water splitting performance. Water electrolysis is an important technology for green hydrogen production, but the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) lead to high overall energy consumption. Using the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) instead of OER has been considered an effective route for reducing potential and treating urea-containing wastewater. Here, we introduced Sn into RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti through three methods: electrodeposition, hydrothermal and ion exchange, and constructed a series of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti electrodes. The systematic characterization showed that Sn was successfully introduced in the form of rutile SnO 2 , and the elements were evenly distributed. The Sn introduction method significantly affected morphology and electrocatalytic performance of electrodes: NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-E prepared by electrodeposition method exhibited a compact nanosheet structure, high surface roughness and abundant exposed active sites, exhibiting the best activity in HER/OER, while NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I prepared by ion exchange method maintained its original morphology, and NiO nanoclusters were evenly dispersed, showing the best performance in UOR. The potential of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was only 1.39 V ( vs . RHE) at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , and it operated stably for more than 132 h. When NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was assembled into a HER‖UOR two-electrode system, the cell voltage at 100 mA cm −2 was only 1.65 V, which was 0.26 V lower than that of the traditional HER‖OER. This work reveals the modulating effect of Sn introduction method on the electrocatalytic performance of multi-component oxides, and provides a scalable solution for the advancement of energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with degradation of urea.

The inevitable electrochemical oxidation accompanied with continuous dissolution of Ru triggers structural distortion, causing insufficient catalytic activity and stability of Ru-based electrocatalysts in acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, we propose a Mn doping strategy to obtain Mn doped RuO 2 (Mn-RuO 2 ) for stabilizing the dynamic Ru. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate that the doped Mn in RuO 2 preferentially replaces the oxidation of Ru by self-oxidation during the OER process, which significantly suppresses excessive dissolution of Ru. Furthermore, in-situ Raman spectroscopy, in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the differential electrochemical mass spectrometry measurements combined with density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Mn doping is able to strengthen the covalency of metal–oxygen bonds, facilitate lattice oxygen mechanism with elevated energy level of O 2p band. Therefore, Mn-RuO 2 catalyst demonstrates remarkable acidic OER performance, only needing an overpotential of 209 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm –2 , 139 mV lower than that of commercial RuO 2 . And Mn-RuO 2 can maintain stable operation for over 180 h, which is about 18 times that of commercial RuO 2 . Notably, when Mn-RuO 2 is used as the anode, the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers demonstrates stable operation for 40 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work offers a strategy to alleviate stability issue of Ru-based catalysts for efficient acidic OER process.

The exploitation of highly active, cheap cost and durable electrocatalyst for acidic water oxidation reaction still presents a major technological and scientific challenge in proton exchange membrane water electrolysers (PEMWEs). Herein, a hybrid aerogel of oxygen defect-rich RuO 2 nanoparticles coupling with carbon (V O -RuO 2 @CA) was designed to promote their activity and stability during acid water oxidation. The optimized V O -RuO 2 @CA achieves an ultralow overpotential of 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for acidic water oxidation and sustains a prominent long-term stability during the 30 h chronopotentiometry test in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Furthermore, V O -RuO 2 @CA exhibits high mass activities of 186.5 mA mg Ru −1 and TOF values of up to 2.07 s − 1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, being 17.7 and 4.8 times higher than commercial RuO 2 , respectively. Theory calculations and experimental results verify that the oxygen vacancies (V O ) could significantly weaken the binding energy of O* with respect to OOH* for the interfacial Ru centers between RuO 2 and carbon, rendering the increase of the intrinsic water oxidation activity and resistance to over-oxidation for RuO 2 . This research provides a novel pathway to explore remarkably efficient 3D porous hybrid aerogel electrocatalysts toward anodic electrocatalysts applications in PEMWEs.

Engineering nanocomposites with interfaces was already found to be an efficient method for designing water-splitting catalysts. In this study, a rationally designed 3D Ru/RuO2@N-rGO hierarchical porous heterocatalyst containing abundant interfaces was obtained via a hydrothermal-calcining strategy for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In the synthesis process, polypyrrole helped the self-assembled GO to form a hybrid aerogel network, in situ reducing the Ru salt as reductant and doping graphene as N precursor. CO2, which was in situ produced via the reaction between Na2SO4 and C, could partially or totally oxidize metal Ru to regulate the composition of Ru/RuO2 nanoparticles. Benefiting from the large surface area and a high number of bifunctional active sites coupled interfaces, the as-obtained Ru/RuO2@N-rGO heterostructure catalyst revealed high HER/OER activities in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions, respectively. The present work could provide a way to engineer Ru/RuO2 nanoparticles in 3D electrocatalysts to boost HER/OER performances.

The precise construction of highly dispersed monometallic composites with abundant grain boundaries, beyond conventional gradient or core–shell structures, remains a key challenge. Herein, we report a chlorine-mediated strategy to achieve monometallic Ru–RuO2 featuring a high density of well-defined heterointerfaces. By leveraging the distinct binding energies of Ru–O and Ru–Cl, a controlled in situ reduction process selectively converts Cl-occupied regions in a RuOCl precursor into metallic Ru domains, yielding an intimately interwoven Ru/RuO2 heterostructure. This unique architecture provides a high density of interfacial active sites, leading to exceptional pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The optimized Ru/RuO2 catalyst achieves remarkably low overpotentials of 22, 54, and 26 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, 1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively, surpassing commercial Pt/C. Density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations illustrated that the remarkable HER activity stems from synergistic metal–oxide interactions: RuO2 promotes efficient water dissociation, while adjacent metallic Ru sites optimize hydrogen adsorption, collectively accelerating the HER kinetics. This work provides a general design strategy for constructing high-performance heterointerface-enriched electrocatalysts.

Efficient hydrogen production plays a key role in establishing hydrogen economy in the current world. In this study, we fabricated ultrafine RuO 2 nanoparticles on carbon black to form a strawberry-like RuO 2 /C hybrid, using by a solid-phase grinding and subsequent low-temperature annealing. The synthesized hybrid displays very low reaction activation energy (28.5 KJ mol −1 ) for hydrogen evolution from ammonia borane . In case of hydrogen evolution from alkaline water, it also exhibits a remarkably improved electrocatalytic activity than a commercial Pt/C, with an ultra-low overpotential of 8 mV (at 10 mA cm −2 ). For the above bifunctional catalyst , the formed C–Ru–C bonds between the ruthenium oxide and carbon result in the ultrahigh activity of the hybrid, as evidenced by DFT results. This work offers a guideline to synthesize efficient metal-based (Ru, Pd, Rh, Ir, Au, etc.) catalysts with smart structures for catalysis.

Ni, Ce, and Ta modified Ti/SnO 2 –Sb 2 O 5 –RuO 2 anodes were first prepared by thermal decomposition strategy and applied for Orange G degradation to explore the effect of Ni, Ce, and Ta modification on electrocatalytic property. The Ta modified anode showed the highest ·OH generation capability and the lowest charge transfer resistance among all samples, conducive to electrocatalytic degradation of Orange G. Besides, the Ta modified anode shows more cracks than Ni and Ce modified anodes, which is expected to create more specific surface areas and more exposed active sites for Orange G degradation. The degradation efficiency and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate increased in the order Ru < Ru–Ni < Ru–Ce < Ru–Ta, with Ru–Ta showing the highest degradation efficiency of 98.6% and 44.2%, much higher than 79.6% and 27.5% of Ru, respectively.

Graphical Electrocatalytic water-splitting : A facile reduction-hydrolysis strategy was developed to fabricate a Ru−RuO 2 hybrid on various substrates (Ni foam, graphene and CNT) as bifunctional electrocatalysts for water-splitting. Engineering bifunctional nanocomposites with pronounced interfacial structure represents an effective design strategy for water-splitting catalysts. Herein, a facile reduction-hydrolysis method is described for the fabrication of Ru−RuO 2 hybrid nanocomposites on various substrates [Ni foam (NF), carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene oxide (GO)] as overall water-splitting catalysts. Polydopamine (PDA) is the key element for simultaneously fabricating the Ru−RuO 2 hybrids as a moderate reductant by controlling the reduction rate. In the synthesis process, a gradual reduction of Ru 3+ to Ru 0 in the presence of PDA occurred during the hydrolytic process of Ru 3+ to form RuO 2 ⋅ n (H 2 O). After calcination, Ru−RuO 2 hybrids with tight interfacial contacts and high electrical conductivity exhibited excellent performance for both HER and OER. Especially, Ru−RuO 2 hybrids on the NF (Ru−RuO 2 /NC/NF) achieved outstanding catalytic activity toward HER and OER with overpotential of 24 mV and 223 mV at a current density 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, respectively. This work provides a new method for facile synthesis and engineering of Ru−RuO 2 nanoparticles on various substrates for boosting the HER/OER performance.

Tackling the problem of poor conductivity and catalytic stability of pristine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial to improve their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Herein, we introduce a novel strategy of dysprosium (Dy) doping, using the unique 4 f orbitals of this rare earth element to enhance electrocatalytic activity of MOFs. Our method involves constructing Dy-doped Ni-MOF (Dy@Ni-MOF) nanoneedles on carbon cloth via a Dy-induced valence electronic perturbation approach. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Dy doping can effectively modify the electronic structure of the Ni active centers and foster a strong electronic interaction between Ni and Dy. The resulting benefits include a reduced work function and a closer proximity of the d -band center to the Fermi level, which is conducive to improving electrical conductivity and promoting the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates. Furthermore, the Dy@Ni-MOF achieves superhydrophilicity, ensuring effective electrolyte contact and thus accelerating reaction kinetics. Ex-situ and in-situ analysis results manifest Dy 2 O 3 /NiOOH as the actual active species. Therefore, Dy@Ni-MOF shows impressive OER performance, significantly surpassing Ni-MOF. Besides, the overall water splitting device with Dy@Ni-MOF as an anode delivers a low cell voltage of 1.51 V at 10 mA cm −2 and demonstrates long-term stability for 100 h, positioning it as a promising substitute for precious metal catalysts.
