To meet aviation decarbonization targets, efficient catalysts for bio-jet fuel are needed. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an indispensable step in converting lipid feedstocks to jet-range hydrocarbons, which critically depends on the pore architecture, acidity distribution and metal dispersion of the catalysts. In this work, a layered SAPO-11 (LS) molecular sieve was synthesized using the polyamine surfactant (C 22 H 45 -N(CH 3 )-C 6 H 12 -N(CH 3 ) 2 ) as a micro-mesopore-directing agent. Ni species were introduced to obtain a series of Ni x /LS catalysts with the Ni loadings of x wt% ( x = 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0), in which Ni 6 /LS exhibited the best HDO performance. Using methyl laurate (ML) as a model feedstock, at the optimized conditions of 360 °C, 2.0 MPa and a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 6.0 h − 1 , the Ni 6 /LS catalyst had the 99.6% conversion of ML with the 97.3% selectivity toward C 11 -C 12 alkanes, surpassing the conventional Ni 6 /microporous SAPO-11 (Ni 6 /MS) catalyst and the literature-reported catalysts. The superior lipid HDO performance of Ni 6 /LS was attributed that the layered architecture of LS provided a larger specific surface area and more mesoporous channels than MS, greatly promoting the high dispersion of Ni species. Lower olefins, produced from syngas through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, has been gaining worldwide attention as a non-petroleum route. However, the process demonstrates limited selectivity for target products. Herein, a hybrid catalyst system utilizing Fe-based catalyst and SAPO-34 was shown to enhance the selectivity toward lower olefins. A comprehensive study was conducted to examine the impact of various operating conditions on catalytic performance, such as space velocity, pressure, and temperature, as well as catalyst combinations, including loading pattern, and mass ratio of metal and zeolite. The findings indicated that the addition of SAPO-34 was beneficial for enhancing catalytic activity. Furthermore, compared with AlPO-34 zeolite, the strong-acid site on SAPO-34 was identified to crack the long-chain hydrocarbons, thus contributing to the lower olefin formation. Nevertheless, an excess of strong-acid sites was found to detrimentally impact the selectivity of lower olefins, attributed to the increased aromatization and polymerization of lower olefins. The detailed analysis of a hybrid catalyst in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis provides a practical strategy for improving lower olefins selectivity, and has broader implications for the application of hybrid catalyst in diverse catalytic systems.

Molecular structural modification was a critical step for the production of high-quality biofuel. In this study, it was found that catalytic cracking followed by product isomerization is an effective technology to convert waste oil into low CFPP and high-quality biofuel. The detailed catalyst characterization was conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), NH3-temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), pyridine-adsorbed Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (Py-FTIR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis. With the addition of Ce into the Ni/SAPO-11 catalyst, the occurrence of the hydro-cracking reaction was restrained efficiently, and (20 + 1)% NiCe/SAPO-11 was considered as the optimal catalyst for the hydro-isomerization study. Under the action of the bimetallic catalyst, the isomerization reaction could be carried out at low reaction temperature (340 °C) because of the high olefin content (approximately 43%) in pyrolytic oils. Comparison of physical and chemical properties for the hydro-isomerization of pyrolytic oil catalyzed over NiCe/SAPO-11 and Pt/SAPO-11 was conducted. For the two catalysts, the product fuel revealed excellent properties, which abided by the established EN and ASTM standards.

The crystal size and uniformity of zeolites are crucial for their excellent performance in various industrial applications. Here, by utilizing commercial micrometer-sized zeolites as seeds and adjusting the weight percentage of seeds from 0 % to 5 %, the crystal sizes of silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-34 samples first decrease from 12.47 μm (S0) to 3.04 μm (S4), then increase to 5.34 μm (S5). Correspondingly, their relative crystal size deviations first decrease from 183.32 % to 60.53 %, then increase to 115.17 %, and the crystal size uniformity factors first increase from 0.33 to 1, then decrease to 0.53. The crystal size uniformity factor of sample S4 equals 1, indicating that it exhibits the best crystal size uniformity. This method is also applicable to aluminosilicate zeolites. By adjusting the weight percentage of seeds from 0 % to 3 %, the crystal sizes of ZSM-5 samples first decrease from 13.61 μm (Z0) to 2.49 μm (Z2), then increase to 4.46 μm (Z3); correspondingly, their crystal size uniformity factors first increase from 0.42 to 1, then decrease to 0.71. In addition, this route significantly enhances the yields and relative crystallinities of both SAPO-34 and ZSM-5 zeolites. Specifically, the yield and relative crystallinity of SAPO-34 zeolite increase by 40.71 % and 8.45 % respectively, while the yield and relative crystallinity of ZSM-5 zeolite improve by 24.05 % and 12.55 % individually. Notably, in the methanol to olefins (MTO) reaction, the propylene selectivity to butene selectivity ratio is inversely related to the crystal size; this suggests that crystal size may play a primary role in the formation of propylene and butene, with smaller crystal sizes being more favorable for the formation of propylene compared to butene. Furthermore, sample S4, which has a crystal size uniformity factor of 1 and a crystal size of 3.04 μm, exhibits excellent MTO performance; its catalytic lifetime increases by 69 %, and selectivity for ethylene plus propylene increases by 6.3 % in comparison to conventional sample S0.

Selective adsorption is regarded as a promising alternative for propylene/propane separation. However, the similar physicochemical properties of these two components pose a challenge in developing adsorbents that simultaneously exhibit high selectivity and substantial adsorption capacity. This study aims to achieve molecular sieving of propylene and propane by precisely controlling the pore size of silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) molecular sieve. The pore size of the eight-membered-ring SAPO-35 molecular sieve is tuned via ion exchange to fall between the kinetic diameters of propylene and propane, enabling selective adsorption of propylene while excluding propane molecules. Ion exchange treatment increased the equilibrium adsorption selectivity of the SAPO-35 from 2.2 to 11.4, placing it among the highest-performing molecular sieve-based adsorbents. This modification also substantially improved the material’s regeneration capability at ambient temperature. Theoretical calculations reveal that steric hindrance effects, arising when gas molecules diffuse through the eight-membered-ring channels, contribute significantly to the high adsorption selectivity. Breakthrough experiments demonstrated that Na-SAPO-35 achieves a dynamic selectivity of 15.9 for propylene/propane separation. The development of Na-SAPO-35 adsorbents with high selectivity, substantial adsorption capacity, and robust durability is critical for advancing the industrial implementation of adsorption-based separation technologies.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vegetable oils to renewable alkane-type biofuels has attracted more and more concern in recent years. However, the presently used catalysts were mainly focused on the sulfided CoMo and NiMo catalysts, which inevitably posed sulfur contamination in final products. Therefore, exploring nonsulfured catalyst for this processing is of fundamental importance, but it is still an open challenge. In this paper, we prepared the sulfur free Ni supported on SiO2, γ-Al2O3, SAPO-11, HZSM-5, and HY by incipient wetness impregnation and tested the catalytic performance in HDO of methyl palmitate. Alkanes with long carbon chains were mainly produced with two possibly parallel approaches: hydrogenation of hexadecanal to hexadecanol, followed by dehydration/hydrogenation to C16 alkane and decarbonylaton/decarboxylation of hexadecanoic acid to C15 alkane. The acidity of catalysts significantly influenced their catalytic performance, and the Ni/SAPO-11 catalysts with weak and medium acidity showed superior properties to the other catalysts due to the synergistic effect of metal Ni and acidic support. The maximum yield of 93% for C15+ alkanes was observed over 7 wt % Ni/SAPO-11 under the mild reaction conditions of 493 K and 2 MPa, indicating its promising application in this reaction.

Biomass is an important renewable resource in nature, and cellulose is a crucial component within it. The chemically directed conversion of cellulose into ethylene glycol offers a green alternative to traditional petroleum-based production methods. In this study, a multifunctional Ni–WOx/SAPO-11 catalyst was designed. By optimizing the processing parameters of catalysts and the reaction conditions of them, it was demonstrated that this catalyst could efficiently catalyze cellulose into alcohol products through a series of tandem reactions such as hydrolysis, retro-aldol condensation, and hydrogenation under relatively mild conditions. The yield of ethylene glycol climbed from 4% (at 180 °C) to 66.6% (at 240 °C) with the increase of reaction temperature. Characterization (XPS, TEM, TPD/TPR) revealed that a reduction temperature of 500 °C maximized Brønsted acidity and W5+/W6+ ratios, enhancing C–C cleavage efficiency. Further increases in the reduction temperature would weaken the Brønsted acid on the surface of SAPO-11, but its surface area would also increase (mainly in the form of mesopores). The uniformly dispersed elemental tungsten could form new acidic sites on the catalyst surface; in combination with active Ni0, this high-temperature reduced catalyst could achieve the direct hydrogenolysis of cellulose to produce ethylene glycol, benefiting the efficient utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in the future.

Chemoselective hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin is of great importance in converting biomass into high value-added chemicals. Herein, we describe a facile photochemical route to access palladium single atoms and clusters supported on silicoaluminophosphate-31 (SAPO-31) as a highly active, chemoselective, and reusable catalyst for hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin. Characterizations by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurement, and CO-absorbed diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy reveal the atomically dispersed palladium single atoms and clusters are loosely bonded and randomly dispersed, without forming strong palladium-palladium metallic bonding, over the SAPO-31 support. This catalyst, with a full metal availability to the reactants, exhibits exceptional catalytic activity (TOF: 3,000 h −1 , Yield: > 99%) in the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin toward 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions (1 atm, 80 °C, 30 min), along with excellent stability, scalability (up to 100-fold), and wide substrate scope. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the positively charged palladium single atoms and fully exposed clusters, as well as the strong metal-support interactions. This work may offer a new avenue for the design and synthesis of fully exposed metal catalysts with targeted functionalities.

Global warming caused by CO 2 has drawn increasing attention in recent years. Direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to light olefins (C 2 = -C 4 = ) is considered a promising strategy for carbon reduction. However, the catalytic performance of metal oxide/zeolite bifunctional catalysts still requires further optimization to enhance CO 2 conversion efficiency and C 2 = -C 4 = selectivity. This study incorporates a hierarchical porous structure into SAPO-34 molecular sieves to modulate their pore channel structure, while Mg doping is introduced into ZnZrOₓ to improve its crystal structure. Characterization results, including NH 3 -TPD and CO 2 -TPD, reveal that structural modifications improve the acidity of the SAPO-34 molecular sieve and enhance the CO 2 adsorption and activation capacity of ZnZrO x . The catalytic performance of the Z/S bifunctional catalyst was evaluated under the following reaction conditions: mass ratio of ZnZrO x to SAPO-34 (Z:S) = 1:1, reaction temperature = 380°C, reaction pressure = 2 MPa, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) = 16,000 mL·g cat ⁻¹ ·h⁻¹ . The bifunctional catalyst, composed of ZnZrO x doped with 3 % Mg and SAPO-34 with a mesoporous structure, demonstrated a CO 2 conversion of 10.7 % and a C 2 = -C 4 = selectivity of 78.8 % under these conditions, outperforming other Z/S catalysts. This work offers both theoretical and experimental insights for the design of highly efficient bifunctional catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to C 2 = -C 4 = .

Advances in design concept of oxide-zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional tandem catalysts have demonstrated its potential for highly enhanced selectivity and yield in CO 2 conversion by assigning CO 2 activation and C-C coupling to specific oxide and zeolite , respectively. However, the crystalline structural effects of oxides have not been thoroughly investigated. Here, ZnO/ZrO 2 with different ZrO 2 crystalline phases modulated by Li doping has been used as an oxide catalyst to combine with SAPO-34 as a bifunctional composite catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation to light olefins . With the transformation of the support ZrO 2 crystalline phase from tetragonal phase to mixed crystalline phase in the catalyst, the CO 2 conversion and yield of target product light olefins were significantly improved. The best-performing ZnO/5Li-ZrO 2 catalyst exhibited a CO 2 conversion of 28.56%, light olefins selectivity of 82.00% with a yield of 8.77% along with good stability under the reaction conditions of 380 °C, 3 MPa, and 6000 mL/g/h. The characterization results by XRD , Raman, HRTEM , XPS and CO 2 -TPD confirmed that the highly enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the strong interaction between the mixed crystal phase 5Li-ZrO 2 and ZnO, which generated a large number of oxygen vacancies for CO 2 activation. The results indicate that controlling the crystal phase of the oxide support is of prime importance in designing more active and selective oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalysts for high-efficiency CO 2 to light olefins conversion.

A new method called Instant Exactness Synthesis (IES), which was applied to prepare SAPO-11 molecular sieve, was introduced innovatively. The metal–acid bifunctional Ni/SAPO-11-IES catalyst with a Ni content of 4% was prepared by the impregnation method. Ni/SAPO-11-H catalyst was prepared as a comparative sample through the traditional hydrothermal method. In addition, the growth mechanism was used to explain the excellent performance of catalyst prepared by IES method in detail. The structure of Ni/SAPO-11-IES was confirmed via XRD and TEM characterization. The pore structure of the molecular sieve was determined by nitrogen adsorption and desorption. 29 Si MAS NMR measurement was used to illustrate multiple silicon environment which supported the excellent acidity in NH 3 -TPD measurement. Furthermore, the favourable dispersibility of Ni species was proved by the mapping of the elements and EDS. Benefiting from the superior performance of materials, Ni/SAPO-11-IES catalyst exhibited a higher catalytic performance for n-heptane hydroisomerization with n-heptane conversion of 82% and isoheptane selectivity of 86%, respectively, compared with other catalysts in the same system. The study also provides new ideas for the preparation of molecular sieve materials.

CO2 reduction to light olefins is an important pathway toward carbon neutrality, but it is hindered by low thermodynamic conversion and the inherent trade-off between activity and selectivity. To address this challenge, a bifunctional catalyst consisting of Cu single atoms anchored on ZrO2 and SAPO-34 (Cu1/ZrO2-SAPO-34) was developed. This catalyst achieves 84.3% light olefin selectivity and 15.0% CO2 conversion, with stable performance maintained over 100 hours. In this catalyst, Cu single atoms, ZrO2, and SAPO-34 exhibit clear division of labor and synergy, responsible for CO2 activation, active site stabilization, and olefin selectivity control, respectively. Mechanistic investigations using in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculations demonstrate that the interaction between Cu single atoms and ZrO2 facilitates the further hydrogenation of formate intermediates to methoxy species, while reducing the energy barrier for methoxy hydrogenation to methanol, thus ensuring high light olefin selectivity in subsequent conversion over SAPO-34. This work provides new insights for CO2 conversion and the design and application of single-atom catalysts in tandem catalytic reactions.
