Preparation and solar thermochemical properties analysis of NiFe2O4@SiC/ @Si3N4 for high-performance CO2-splitting

Boshu Jiang,Bachirou Guene Lougou,Hao Zhang,Boxi Geng,Lianxuan Wu,Yong Shuai

The solar-driven thermochemical CO 2 -to-CO conversion is an effective way to achieve the mission of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. However, synthesizing porous reacting materials with excellent thermal stability, hardness and long-term cyclic stability, oxygen exchange capacity, and higher CO 2 -to-CO conversion are the most important challenges associated with the thermochemical CO 2 -splitting approach and technological upscaling to large-scale applications. This study presented the development of NiFe 2 O 4 oxygen carriers, the synthesis method of SiC and Si 3 N 4 supports, and solar-to-fuel processing of the newly prepared materials through CO 2 -splitting under a highly concentrated solar radiative heat flux. The newly synthesized NiFe 2 O 4 @SiC porous redox material resulted in higher solar energy absorption and CO 2 conversion capability with an instantaneous CO production of 410 μmol/g and direct CO 2 -to-CO conversion rate of 18.1 % at 1073–1273 K reaction temperature. The media composite of NiFe 2 O 4 @SiC exhibited high-temperature thermal changes, good thermochemical reaction stability, and a higher CO production rate through six redox cycles compared to NiFe 2 O 4 @Si 3 N 4 porous reacting material. The high oxidation potential and remarkably solar radiative heat flux absorption and thermochemical CO 2 -splitting capacities of the newly developed materials were demonstrated through experimental analysis. The synergistic effect of the oxygen carriers (NiFe 2 O 4 ) and substrate materials including SiC and Si 3 N 4 skeletons for CO 2 -splitting is highlighted. This study provided comprehensive and novel experimental insights that can be used as guidance for theoretical research and application in CO 2 conversion into high-value-added energy products.

Stereolithography 3D printing of Si3N4 cellular ceramics with ultrahigh strength by using highly viscous paste

Zhangyi Huang,Li Ying Liu,Jianming Yuan,Huilu Guo,Haomin Wang,Pengcheng Ye,Zehui Du,Yida Zhao,Hao Zhang,Chee Lip Gan

Si 3 N 4 cellular ceramics with large thickness/length ratio (up to ∼12.0) have been successfully prepared by stereolithography 3D printing with highly viscous (viscosity >10.0 Pa‧s at 30 s −1 shear rate), self-holding pastes. Due to the high viscosity and low curing depth of the paste, structural defects are commonly found in the printed honeycombs or lattices and anisotropic surface roughness is present. The structural defects can be reduced by aligning the lattice orientation at 45° relative to the paste recoating direction to reduce shear stress concentration at the cured part beneath. The resultant honeycombs and simple cubic lattices with density of ∼1.5–1.6 g/cm 3 exhibit compressive strength as high as 1.1 GPa and 290.7 MPa, respectively. The specific compressive strength of honeycombs increases from 298.6 to 681.7 MPa‧cm 3 /g with the ceramic volume fractions increase from 0.19 to 0.52, surpassing that of many other ceramic honeycombs and lattices with similar density reported so far. The controlling factors governing the defect formation, surface finish and mechanical properties of the printed cellular ceramics are discussed thoroughly.

Single-Side Superhydrophobicity in Si3N4-Doped and SiO2-Treated Polypropylene Nonwoven Webs with Antibacterial Activity

Ming-Chao Han,Shun-Zhong Cai,Ji Wang,Hong-Wei He

Meltblown (MB) nonwovens as air filter materials have played an important role in protecting people from microbe infection in the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic enters the third year in this current global event, it becomes more and more beneficial to develop more functional MB nonwovens with special surface selectivity as well as antibacterial activities. In this article, an antibacterial polypropylene MB nonwoven doped with nano silicon nitride (Si3N4), one of ceramic materials, was developed. With the introduction of Si3N4, both the average diameter of the fibers and the pore diameter and porosity of the nonwovens can be tailored. Moreover, the nonwovens having a single-side moisture transportation, which would be more comfortable in use for respirators or masks, was designed by imparting a hydrophobicity gradient through the single-side superhydrophobic finishing of reactive organic/inorganic silicon coprecipitation in situ. After a nano/micro structural SiO2precipitation on one side of the fabric surfaces, the contact angles were up to 161.7° from 141.0° originally. The nonwovens were evaluated on antibacterial activity, the result of which indicated that they had a high antibacterial activity when the dosage of Si3N4was 0.6 wt%. The bacteriostatic rate againstE. coliandS. aureuswas up to over 96%. Due to the nontoxicity and excellent antibacterial activity of Si3N4, this MB nonwovens are promising as a high-efficiency air filter material, particularly during the pandemic. Keywords:PP meltblown nonwoven;silicon nitrile (Si3N4);filtration;antibacterial materials;superhydrophobicity

Fabrication and properties of symmetrical W/Si3N4/W functionally graded materials by spark plasma sintering

Zhilei Wei,Siyu Liu,Dangui Liu,Jinling Wu,Hongyan Xia,Bo Wang,Zhongqi Shi

Si 3 N 4 ceramics have shown promising application prospects as the sealing materials for liquid metal batteries (LMBs). However, the joining of Si 3 N 4 to the metal shell of LMBs is rather difficult because of the non-wetting property and mismatch of their thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs). Herein, to solve the above issue, W/Si 3 N 4 functionally graded materials (FGMs) were designed and fabricated via the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The effects of layer numbers and layer components on the phase composition, structure, and thermal stress of the FGMs were systematically investigated using both experimental and simulation methods. W/Si 3 N 4 FGMs, with optimal layer numbers, were then utilized for fabricating symmetrical W/Si 3 N 4 /W FGMs. The thermal stress of the products can be effectively reduced by adjusting the MgO content of the central Si 3 N 4 layer. As a result, the optimal product displayed good interface bonding between two adjacent layers and also exhibited high flexural strength (943.9 MPa) and electrical resistivity (2.0 × 10 12 Ω cm). This route for the fabrication of symmetrical W/Si 3 N 4 /W FGMs exhibits the advantage of high efficiency, and the products with excellent properties can be used as sealing materials for LMBs.

Microstructure and properties of porous Si3N4 ceramics by gelcasting-self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS)

Chen Shile,Wang Liang,He Gang,Li Jiangtao,Wang Chang-An

Porous silicon nitride ceramics have attracted a considerable attention due to their excellent overall performance, but poor porosity homogeneity and structural shrinkage induced by prolonged high temperature sintering limit its further application. Herein, as a three-in-one solution for the above issues, for the first time we develop a novel approach that integrates the merits of gelcasting-SHS (self-propagating high-temperature synthesis) to prepare porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics to simultaneously achieve high porosity, high strength, high toughness, and low thermal conductivity across a wide temperature range. By regulating the solid content, porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics with homogeneous pore structure are obtained, where the pore size falls inbetween 1.61 and 4.41 µm, and the elongated grains are interlaced and interlocked to form micron-sized coherent interconnected pores. At the same time, porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics with porosity of 67.83% to 78.03% are obtained, where the compressive strength reaches 11.79 to 47.75 MPa and fracture toughness reaches 1.20 to 6.71 MPa·m 1/2 .

Porous SiC–Si3N4 composite ceramics with excellent EMW absorption property prepared by gelcasting using DMAA

Shuang Yin,Dongliang Mao,Limei Pan,Xia Fang,Yang Wang,Tai Qiu,Jian Yang

The porous SiC–Si 3 N 4 composite ceramics with good EMW absorption properties were prepared by combination of gelcasting and carbothermal reduction. The pre-oxidation of Si 3 N 4 powders significantly improved the rheological properties of slurries (0.06 Pa s at 103.92 s −1 ) and also suppressed the generation of NH 3 and N 2 from Si 3 N 4 hydrolysis and reaction between Si 3 N 4 and initiator APS, thereby reducing the pore defects in green bodies and enhancing mechanical properties with a maximum value of 42.88 MPa. With the extension of oxidation time from 0 h to 10 h, the porosity and pore size of porous SiC–Si 3 N 4 composite ceramics increased from approximately 41.86% and 1.0–1.5 μm to 46.33% and ~200 μm due to the production of CO, N 2 and gaseous SiO, while the sintering shrinkage decreased from 16.24% to 10.50%. With oxidation time of 2 h, the Si 2 N 2 O fibers formed in situ by the reaction of Si 3 N 4 and amorphous SiO 2 effectively enhanced the mechanical properties , achieving the highest flexural strength of 129.37 MPa and fracture toughness of 4.25 MPa m 1/2 . Compared with monolithic Si 3 N 4 ceramics, the electrical conductivity , relative permittivity and dielectric loss were significantly improved by the in-situ introduced PyC from the pyrolysis of three-dimensional network DMAA-MBAM gel in green bodies and the SiC from the carbothermal reduction reaction between PyC and SiO 2 and Si 3 N 4 . The porous SiC–Si 3 N 4 composite ceramics prepared by the unoxidized Si 3 N 4 powders demonstrated the optimal EMW absorption properties with reflection loss of −22.35 dB at 8.37 GHz and 2 mm thickness, corresponding to the effective bandwidth of 8.20–9.29 GHz, displaying great application potential in EMW absorption fields.

Rufei Chen,Wenyan Duan,Gong Wang,Bingshan Liu,Yantong Zhao,Shan Li

Wave-transmitting materials are a kind of multi-functional materials that protect the normal operation of communication and guidance systems of spacecraft in harsh environments. In this paper, we fabricate a broadband microwave transparent Si 3 N 4 -SiO 2 composite ceramic with excellent performance through digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology. The influences of sintering temperature on the weight increase rate, density, dimensional shrinkage, phase composition, microstructure, bending strength and dielectric properties of Si 3 N 4 -SiO 2 ceramic were all systematically studied. The strength of Si 3 N 4 -SiO 2 ceramic sintered at 1350 ℃ was 77 ± 5 MPa. The relative permittivity of the ceramic is within the range of less than 4, and the loss tangent can be below 0.003. The 3D printed Si 3 N 4 -SiO 2 ceramic material exhibited excellent wave-transparent performance.

Effects of particle size and color on photocuring performance of Si3N4 ceramic slurry by stereolithography

Yao Liu,Lina Zhan,Lei Wen,Lin Cheng,Yu He,Biao Xu,Qiumei Wu,Shaojun Liu

Due to high absorbance of UV light and low solid loading, the stereolithography-based additive manufacturing of gray-colored and dense Si 3 N 4 ceramic is of significant difficulty and challenge. The effects of geometric properties of ceramic powders on the curing performance were investigated by studying the absorption difference of the Si 3 N 4 ceramic particles with different colors and particle sizes and ultraviolet light. The results show that the transmission of ultraviolet light and curing performance of the darker Si 3 N 4 ceramic slurry are much poor. Under the same particle size, the Si 3 N 4 ceramic slurry using lighter particles presents the smaller scattering coefficient. The scattering coefficient (∼202) of the gray powder with ∼0.8 μm average particle size is the smallest. Under the same color, the larger the particle size, the smaller the scattering coefficient. The smallest scattering coefficient of the white powder with ∼2.0 μm average particle size is ∼110.

Significantly toughened SiC foams with enhanced microwave absorption via in situ growth of Si3N4 nanowires

Guanjie Zeng,Xin Li,Yanjing Wei,Tong Guo,Xiaozhong Huang,Xuelong Chen,Xiu-Zhi Tang

Porous ceramic materials with high electromagnetic absorption capacity, low density, high thermal resistance and excellent mechanical properties are highly desirable in aerospace applications. Here, we synthesized one type of hierarchical SiC composite foams with in situ grown Si 3 N 4 nanowires via a pyrolysis process. The existence and structure of Si 3 N 4 nanowires were characterized by multiple techniques and analysis revealed that the growth of nanowires was based on a typical vapor-solid mechanism. Owing to the presence of a large amount of Si 3 N 4 nanowires, both the mechanical performance and electromagnetic absorption were significantly enhanced. The minimum Reflection loss (RL) of 1.25 mm SiC composite foam reaches −50.3 dB at 16.48 GHz with an effective bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 3.6 GHz (14.4–18 GHz), while the toughness and specific compressive strength increased by 356% and 126%, respectively. Especially, a ductile and steady fracture behavior was observed for the mechanically enhanced composite foam, rather than the typical catastrophic failure usually seen for ceramic materials. Owing to the excellent electromagnetic wave absorption capability and enhanced mechanical properties, as well as low density and high thermal resistance, this type of composite ceramic material may find applications in aviation, aerospace and other extreme environments.

Self-assembling of versatile Si3N4@SiO2 nanofibre sponges by direct nitridation of photovoltaic silicon waste

Nannan Zhang,Daoping Xiang

Solar cells based on crystalline silicon wafers have dominated the global photovoltaic market for many years. Unfortunately, a large amount of photovoltaic silicon waste (PSW) also was produced during the process of cutting silicon ingot into silicon wafer. The improperly discarded PSW will bring about serious environmental hazardous problems, so it is highly necessary to safely and effectively recover and utilize PSW. Here, we report self-assembled 3D Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanofibre sponges utilising PSW as silicon sources for the first time. This kind of ceramic sponge displays excellent compression resilience under a maximum strain of 67% due to the flexibility of the Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanofibres. The Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanofibre sponges can withstand high temperatures beyond 1200 °C with negligible weight loss and demonstrates favourable thermal insulation properties. Furthermore, the porous Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanofibre sponges possess ultra-low dielectric properties , with the minimum dielectric constant and dielectric loss approaching 1 and 0, respectively. In short, a simple and low-cost technology using industrial waste to fabricate versatile Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanofibre sponges with prominent performance is of great significance for the development and application of 3D ceramic architectures in various industry fields including aerospace, electronic devices and thermal insulation.

Significantly Affected Lubrication Behavior of Silicone Oil Lubricated Si3N4/Glass Contact after Cleaning with Different Solvents

Xiangli Wen,Jingbo Fang,Pengpeng Bai,Yuanzhe Li,Yonggang Meng,Liran Ma,Yu Tian

Conventional methyl silicone oils have poor lubricating properties in boundary lubrication regions, particularly for ceramic/oxide point contact lubrication. In this study, the residues of various organic solvents on the surfaces of Si3N4 spheres/glass disks were used to determine their effect on the lubricating properties of silicone oil 200. The minute ethanol residues significantly enhanced the antifriction and antiwear properties of silicone oil. Compared to the blank sample, the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear volume of silicone oil 200 with the residual ethanol friction pair were reduced by >40% and >98%, respectively. Being immiscible with silicone oil, the minute ethanol residues also removed impurities from the glass surface and maintained a clean interface, thus effectively blocking direct interactions between the friction pair interfaces. In addition, the residual ethanol reduced the atomic force microscope probe-to-glass surface adhesive force in the silicone oil 200 environment, thus allowing it to maintain low COF and wear rates over a broader range of speeds, loads, and times. In contrast to previous work, this study is the first to effectively regulate the lubrication properties of silicone oil using a residual organic solvent. The findings further verified that the adsorption of vapor molecules can significantly alter the surface forces between interfaces. Thus, adjusting the adhesion force through trace amounts of organic solvent residues may provide novel research inputs, thereby guiding the expansion and scope of silicone oil lubrication applications.

Short-Cut BN Fiber-Toughened Wave-Transparent Si3N4 Ceramics Prepared by Vat Photopolymerization 3D Printing Process

Zihuan Chen,Wenyan Duan,Xingyao Sun,Hanqiang Zhang,Shuyu Zhou,Shan Li,Bingshan Liu,Gong Wang,Ji Li

Si 3 N 4 ceramics are widely applied in mechanical and electronic engineering fields owing to their superior high-temperature resistance, strength, and hardness. However, inherent brittleness and high dielectric constant limit their usage in high-temperature wave-transparent devices. To overcome this, BN fibers (BN f , the main component is hBN) with high aspect ratio and mechanical stability were, for the first time, directly incorporated into a Si 3 N 4 matrix via vat photopolymerization 3D printing process as toughening phases, designed to enhance stress transfer and suppress crack propagation. The effects of BN f content, sintering temperature, and holding time on microstructure and properties were systematically investigated. At an optimal condition (1800°C, 4 h, 4 vol% BN f ), the ceramic showed an open porosity of 28.79%, bending strength of 136 ± 9 MPa, fracture toughness of 2.92 MPa·m 1/2 , and dielectric constant of 4.28. This work provides methods and theoretical guidance for the design and manufacture of directly incorporated fiber-toughened high-temperature wave-transparent materials.
