A novel microporous polymer electrolyte (MPE) based on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) star polymer was prepared by a phase inversion technique. The effects of PEO chain length of star polymer and temperature on ionic conductivity of MPE were investigated. The results showed that the ionic conductivity increased generally with the chain length of star polymer arms without any abrupt change. Effects of star polymer mass fraction on electrolyte uptake and leakage were also discussed. The distribution of holes and connectivity was improved with star polymer mass fraction increased, thus resulted in a high ionic conductivity (3.03×10 −3 S cm −1 ) exhibited at room temperature. Moreover, the electrochemical stability window was observed above 5.0 V (vs. Li/Li + ). All these results showed that this MPE could be served as a good candidate for lithium ion batteries .

In the present study, by use of the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method, we have prepared well-defined 6-arm star-shaped poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDEM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) containing a fluorescent triphenylene core and have studied the pH and ion-species sensitive fluorescence properties of such two star polyelectrolytes. The results obtained by analytical ultracentrifugation indicate that the star PDEM molecules will aggregate together as the pH increases over the pKa but the star PAA molecules will keep a monomeric state over the whole pH range. For both PDEM and PAA, the fluorescence intensity decreases with increasing pH, indicating that the fluorescence intensities of PDEM and PAA are dominated by aggregation induced fluorescence quenching and the chain conformation controlled nonradiative relaxation, respectively. This suggestion is further confirmed by the fact that the star PDEM molecules can form excimers at high pHs and no excimer emission peak can be observed for the star PAA molecules. In the studies of ion-specific fluorescence properties at different pH, for both of the two polyelectrolytes, the ion specificity is determined by the counterion condensation for the charged chains, whereas nonelectrostatic ion adsorption governs the specific ion effect for the uncharged chains.

Effective local delivery methods for sustained and stable release of protein drugs are urgently needed. Biodegradable elastomers based on star-shaped polycyclic esters have received attention for their drug-loading and drug-release kinetics. However, the long degradation periods resulting from their strong lipophilicity greatly hinder their application. In this study, we synthesized new cross-linked elastomers based on methyl-acrylic-star-poly(ϵ-caprolactone-co-d,l-lactide) cyclic ester and methyl-bi-acrylic-poly(ϵ-caprolactone-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-ϵ-caprolactone) with different molecular weights; determined their physical, thermal, and morphological characteristics; and studied their in vitro degradation and release of bovine serum albumin and recombinant human interleukin 2. Elastomer hydrophilicity improved with the introduction of methyl-bi-acrylic-poly(ϵ-caprolactone-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-ϵ-caprolactone), and a shorter degradation period (~25 weeks) was achieved. Additionally, the degradation rate could be adjusted by varying the composition of methyl-bi-acrylic-poly(ϵ-caprolactone-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-ϵ-caprolactone) to directly influence the degree of swelling, cross-linking density, and sol content of the elastomer. The controlled rate of bovine serum albumin and recombinant human interleukin 2 release increased with a larger degree of swelling, higher sol content, and lower cross-link density of the elastomers. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide analysis showed good biocompatibility. These results suggest that these new elastomers are potential candidates for carrier materials in controlled, implantable delivery systems for protein drugs and other biomedical applications.

Star anise essential oil (SAEO) has garnered significant attention for its potent bioactivities. However, the instability and poor water solubility of SAEO limit its application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. To overcome these challenges and improve bioavailability, we encapsulated SAEO within β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) using a saturated aqueous solution method. Characterization techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the successful formation of SAEO and β-CD inclusion complex (SAEO-IC) with good thermal stability . The inclusion complex had a yield of 63.18 ± 3.18% and an oil content of 9.32 ± 0.36%. In vitro digestion studies revealed the stability of SAEO-IC in gastric conditions, with the primary release of active ingredients occurring in the intestine. Moreover, the encapsulation process preserved the antioxidant properties of SAEO and demonstrated enhanced antimicrobial and anti-tumor activity, suggesting that SAEO-IC has the potential to serve as a natural antimicrobial and anticancer agent .

Fungicides currently used to control poplar Cytospora canker (PCC), mainly caused by Cytospora chrysosperma, exhibit variable field efficacy, require high application frequency, pose resistance risks, and impose considerable environmental burdens. In this study, we developed a six-arm star polymer (SSP)-based nanocarrier system to deliver benomyl and carbendazim, aiming to enhance the control efficacy against C. chrysosperma. The SSP formed stable complexes with benomyl and carbendazim through hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals interactions, reducing their particle sizes from 864.36 nm to 14.76 nm and 2725.44 nm to 33.16 nm, respectively. Nanoagents demonstrated markedly enhanced antifungal efficacy over standalone fungicides. Specifically, SSP-benomyl at 3.8 mg/L (IC50 of benomyl) reduced the colony diameter of C. chrysosperma from 80 mm to 23 mm, while SSP-carbendazim at 2.6 mg/L (IC50 of carbendazim) reduced it from 80 mm to 29 mm. Besides high inhibition of fungal growth and control efficiency of PCC, these SSP-based nanoagents exhibited potential disease prevention. Our results provide a nanopesticide delivery system of SSP to manage PCC.

To enhance supercapacitor performance, it is crucial to design electrode materials that are abundant in active sites and incorporate specific functional groups to facilitate rapid ion transport. This study demonstrates the synthesis of star-shaped CoZn-ZIFs using a green method. The derived CoZn-NCs exhibit a wealth of effective functional groups, achieved through the rational tuning of elemental proportions and calcination temperatures. When utilized as a supercapacitor electrode, the Co 1 Zn 1 -NCs/550 electrode attained a specific capacitance of 928 F g⁻¹ at a current density of 0.1 A g⁻¹. Density functional theory (DFT) results further reveal a narrow energy band, suggesting that CoZn-NCs possess good conductivity. A solid-state flexible micro-supercapacitor was constructed using the Co 1 Zn 1 -NCs/550 electrode material. This device exhibited an area capacitance of 637.5 mF cm⁻² accompanied by remarkable electrochemical durability with 97% capacitance retention performance after 5000 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm⁻². Furthermore, devices connected in series and/or parallel successfully powered light-emitting diodes for several minutes, as demonstrated in a video recording, confirming their potential for practical applications. This work offers promising insights into enhancing energy storage.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been considered as a promising new tool to combat the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis. However, the high toxicity and high cost of AMPs hampered their further development. Herein, a series of star poly(L-lysine) (PLL) homo- and copolymers with excellent antimicrobial activity and improved biocompatibility were prepared by the combination of ultra-fast ring opening polymerization (ROP) and side-chain modification. The amine-terminated polyamidoamine dendrimer (Gx-PAMAM) mediated ROP of Nε-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride (Boc-L-Lys-NCA) and γ-benzyl-L-glutamic acid-based N-carboxyanhydride (PBLG-NCA) was able to prepare star PLL homo- and copolymers with 400 residues within 50 min. While the star PLL homopolymers exhibited low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC = 50–200 μg mL−1) against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (i.e., S. aureus and E. coli), they showed high toxicity against various mammalian cell lines. The star PLL copolymers with low contents of hydrophobic and hydroxyl groups showed enhanced antimicrobial activity (MIC = 25–50 μg mL−1) and improved mammalian cell viability. Both SEM and CLSM results indicated the antimicrobial mechanism of membrane disruption.

The catechol groups in mussel adhesive proteins exhibit excellent adhesion property to the skin and tissue surfaces. Inspired by catechol groups, the aim of this study is to synthesize the star-shaped polycaprolactone bio-adhesive bearing catechol end-groups (s-PCL 19 -CA 9 ). Firstly, star-shaped polycaprolactone was synthesized through ring-opening polymerization of caprolactone monomers initiated by β-cyclodextrin, and then the s-PCL 19 -CA 9 was obtained through end-group functionalization using succinic anhydride and dopamine. The structure of s-PCL 19 -CA 9 was characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, and static light scattering. Adhesive strength measurements demonstrate that the incorporation of multifunctional catechol groups endows the crosslinked s-PCL 19 -CA 9 with an excellent adhesion property (102 ± 10 kPa). The swelling ratio of crosslinked s-PCL 19 -CA 9 is as low as 3.4 ± 0.2% owing to the hydrophobicity of PCL and the crosslinking structures. Besides, the cytotoxicity studies show that s-PCL 19 -CA 9 is noncytotoxic. The TGA measurements indicate that s-PCL 19 -CA 9 possesses a good thermal stability. Therefore, this work provides a new way for developing multifunctional bio-adhesives with excellent adhesion property and low swelling ratio.

A colloidal nanocrystal cluster (CNC) is a hierarchical nanostructure formed by clustering several nanocrystals into one nano-ensemble, which may exhibit unique optical or catalytic properties different from individual nanocrystals owing to the mutual interactions among neighboring component nanocrystals. However, there is still no universal synthetic route that could be applicable to diverse material compositions with precisely controlled hierarchical structures (i.e., nanocrystal number density, component nanocrystal size, and overall diameter of the CNC) up to now. Herein, a general and novel synthetic strategy was reported for crafting a wide range of inorganic CNCs (i.e., noble metal, semiconductor, and metal oxide) via utilizing amphiphilic star-like poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene diblock copolymers as nanoreactors prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization. The hierarchical structure of rationally designed CNCs could be readily tailored by varying the P4VP molecular weight of star-like nanoreactors and the parameter optimization during the CNC preparation process, which was inaccessible by conventional synthetic methods.

The traditional antibiotics have specific intracellular targets and disinfect in chemical ways, and the drug-resistance induced by the antibiotics has grown into an emerging threat. It is urgent to call for novel strategies and antibacterial materials to control this situation. Herein, we report a class of silver-decorated nanocomposite AgNPs@PCL-b-AMPs as potent nanoantibiotic, constructed by ring-opening polymerization of the monomers ε-caprolactone, Z-Lys-N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs), and Phe-NCAs, then decorated with AgNPs, and characterized by SEM, TEM, and DLS. The biological assays revealed that the nanocomposite possessed strong antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including clinical isolated bacteria MRSA, VRE, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumonia, exhibiting a MIC value range in 2–8 μg/mL. Importantly, the S. aureus and P. aeruginosa treated with the nanocomposite did not show drug-resistance even after 21 passages. Also, in vivo anti-infective assays showed that the nanocomposite was able to effectively kill bacteria in the infected viscera of mice. The study of the sterilization mechanism showed that the nanocomposite exhibited a multimodal antimicrobial mechanism, including irreversibly damaging the membrane structure, making the leakage of intracellular ions and subsequently inducing generation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), ultimately sterilizing the bacteria. The nanocomposite exhibits effective broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and shows low toxicity to the mammalian cells/animal. Overall, the AgNPs@PCL-b-AMPs gained in this work show great potential as a highly promising antibacterial material for biomedical applications including drug-resistant bacterial infection.

In this contribution, amphiphilic star copolymers (H40- star -PCL- a -PEG) with an H40 hyperbranched polyester core and poly(ε-caprolactone)- a -poly(ethylene glycol) copolymer arms linked with acetal groups are synthesized using ring-opening polymerization and a copper (I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition click reaction. The acid-cleavable acetal groups between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of the arms endow the amphiphilic star copolymers with pH responsiveness. In aqueous solution, unimolecular micelles can be formed with good stability and a unique acid degradability, as is desirable for anticancer drug carriers. For the model drug of doxorubicin, the in vitro release behavior, intracellular release, and inhibition of proliferation of HeLa cells show that the acid-cleavable unimolecular micelles with anticancer activity can be dissociated in an acidic environment and efficiently internalized by HeLa cells. Due to the acid-cleavable and biodegradable nature, unimolecular micelles from amphiphilic star copolymers are promising for applications in intracellular drug delivery for cancer chemotherapy.

Star-shaped polylactide (PLLA) is a potential candidate in many biomedical applications owing to its short degradation time; however, non-bioresorbable polyols have been used in most syntheses of star-shaped polylactide and these are a potential hazard. In this work, reaction of natural xylitol with l -lactide (LLA) was used to synthesize a star-shaped polyester via ring-opening polymerization. The chemical structures of the prepared star-shaped PLLA were characterized by means of 1 H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The crystallization behaviors of the polymers were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The XRD curves of all the star-shaped PLLA based on various xylitol molar fractions were similar, but the crystallinity decreased with the increase of the xylitol molar fraction. These polymers were amorphous when the molar fraction of xylitol was higher than 6 %, whereas they were semicrystalline when the molar ratio of xylitol fell below 6 %. Finally, the degradation of the star-shaped PLLA was studied in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4) at 37 °C, which indicated that the degradation rate of polymers increased with the increase of xylitol molar fraction.
