To obtain polyurethane micelles with excellent stability as a drug delivery carrier, star-shaped amphiphilic block polyurethane (SAPU) was successfully synthesized by the ‘arm-first’ method, using methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ε-caprolactone) diol as soft segments, hexamethylene diisocyanate as hard segments and pentaerythritol as the core. The structure of the SAPU was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The micellization behaviour and micelle properties of SAPU were measured by the pyrene fluorescence probe technique, 1 H NMR, SEM and dynamic light scattering. The results indicated that SAPU could self-assemble to form nanomicelles in aqueous solution and that the micelles showed excellent stability upon dilution and storage. Indometacin as a model drug could be incorporated into SAPU micelles and be released sustainedly. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic segment content and the molecular weight of SAPU had effects on the micelle properties. In addition, SAPU exhibited good cytocompatibility estimated by methylthiazole-tetrazolium assay. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

To enhance supercapacitor performance, it is crucial to design electrode materials that are abundant in active sites and incorporate specific functional groups to facilitate rapid ion transport. This study demonstrates the synthesis of star-shaped CoZn-ZIFs using a green method. The derived CoZn-NCs exhibit a wealth of effective functional groups, achieved through the rational tuning of elemental proportions and calcination temperatures. When utilized as a supercapacitor electrode, the Co 1 Zn 1 -NCs/550 electrode attained a specific capacitance of 928 F g⁻¹ at a current density of 0.1 A g⁻¹. Density functional theory (DFT) results further reveal a narrow energy band, suggesting that CoZn-NCs possess good conductivity. A solid-state flexible micro-supercapacitor was constructed using the Co 1 Zn 1 -NCs/550 electrode material. This device exhibited an area capacitance of 637.5 mF cm⁻² accompanied by remarkable electrochemical durability with 97% capacitance retention performance after 5000 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm⁻². Furthermore, devices connected in series and/or parallel successfully powered light-emitting diodes for several minutes, as demonstrated in a video recording, confirming their potential for practical applications. This work offers promising insights into enhancing energy storage.

Antimicrobial resistance is still a major clinical challenge worldwide today and the development of novel antimicrobial agents with high antimicrobial activity and low bacterial resistance is of great importance. In this work, quaternized 2-(dimethylamino) ethylmethacrylates iodonium salt-type monomers with different lengths of pendent alkyl (qDMAEMA(C x ), x = 3, 6 and 8) are synthesized for preparation of a series of cationic porphyrin-based star-shaped (co)polymers by photo-controlled bromine-iodine transformation reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (BIT-RDRP). Especially, qDMAEMA(C x ) not only acts as a monomer but also can be used as an intrinsic catalyst for the BIT-RDRP. In addition, effects of alkyl chain length (x), degree of polymerization and hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance ( H.L.B. ) on the antibacterial activity of the prepared (co)polymers are investigated. The resulting zinc ion coordinated copolymers [email protected] (qDMAEMA(C 8 ) 20 - co -PEGMA 35 ) (denoted as [email protected] ) exhibits good water solubility and is able to be absorbed effectively on the surfaces of bacteria, exhibiting excellent photodynamic inhibition activity against both S. aureus and E. coli under irradiation with 570 nm light source according to the coated plate experiments. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of [email protected] against S. aureus and E. coli are 1.5 and 2.0 μM, respectively, in the presence of light. Meanwhile, [email protected] shows quite low cytotoxicity and satisfying photolysis ability at working concentrations, displaying promising biological application prospects.

Fluorescent end-functional mikto-arm star copolymers were prepared by an “arm-first” approach mediated by a mixture of macro-RAFT agents. RAFT copolymerization of coumarin-POEGMA, boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-PDMA and bisindolylmaleimide (BIM)-PNIPAM with different fluorophore-labeled end-groups was performed with polyethylene glycol diacrylate as a cross-linker. The fluorescence spectra of fluorophore-labeled homopolymers showed that there was a good linear correlation existing between fluorescence intensity and polymer concentration in dilute solutions. According to the fluorescence results, after carefully choosing the peaks and calculation, the arm components of star polymers can be quantitatively analyzed with obvious similarity to 1H NMR approaches which are considered to be less valid in a complicated chemical environment. Overall, it is reasonably expected that the current study expands the characterization methods for star polymers and promotes the development of the synthesis of well-defined multifunctional star polymers.

In this article, the titanium-oxo cluster containing bromine had been prepared by solvothermal synthesis, which was used to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization of butyl methacrylate in order to obtain organic–inorganic hybrid materials. The structures and compositions of titanium-oxo cluster and its hybrid materials were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), 1 H nuclear magnetic and infrared spectra tests. The hybrid materials with different molecular weights were dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and coated on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, which was used to study the surface properties. Compared with 89.7% light transmittance of the pure PET film, the light transmittance of the modified films was up to 93.3%. Meanwhile, the water contact angles of the modified films also significantly increased. It would be conducive to the self-cleaning of the film surface. The coatings prepared by the static respiration diagram method had better hydrophobic effect and show the performance of light scattering. All of that could be proved through the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The elastic modulus and hardness of hybrid materials also change with the increase of molecular weight. In addition, the T g of the hybrid materials increased, which means they have better thermal stability than that of Polybutylmethacrylate (PBMA).

A colloidal nanocrystal cluster (CNC) is a hierarchical nanostructure formed by clustering several nanocrystals into one nano-ensemble, which may exhibit unique optical or catalytic properties different from individual nanocrystals owing to the mutual interactions among neighboring component nanocrystals. However, there is still no universal synthetic route that could be applicable to diverse material compositions with precisely controlled hierarchical structures (i.e., nanocrystal number density, component nanocrystal size, and overall diameter of the CNC) up to now. Herein, a general and novel synthetic strategy was reported for crafting a wide range of inorganic CNCs (i.e., noble metal, semiconductor, and metal oxide) via utilizing amphiphilic star-like poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-polystyrene diblock copolymers as nanoreactors prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization. The hierarchical structure of rationally designed CNCs could be readily tailored by varying the P4VP molecular weight of star-like nanoreactors and the parameter optimization during the CNC preparation process, which was inaccessible by conventional synthetic methods.

The catechol groups in mussel adhesive proteins exhibit excellent adhesion property to the skin and tissue surfaces. Inspired by catechol groups, the aim of this study is to synthesize the star-shaped polycaprolactone bio-adhesive bearing catechol end-groups (s-PCL 19 -CA 9 ). Firstly, star-shaped polycaprolactone was synthesized through ring-opening polymerization of caprolactone monomers initiated by β-cyclodextrin, and then the s-PCL 19 -CA 9 was obtained through end-group functionalization using succinic anhydride and dopamine. The structure of s-PCL 19 -CA 9 was characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR, and static light scattering. Adhesive strength measurements demonstrate that the incorporation of multifunctional catechol groups endows the crosslinked s-PCL 19 -CA 9 with an excellent adhesion property (102 ± 10 kPa). The swelling ratio of crosslinked s-PCL 19 -CA 9 is as low as 3.4 ± 0.2% owing to the hydrophobicity of PCL and the crosslinking structures. Besides, the cytotoxicity studies show that s-PCL 19 -CA 9 is noncytotoxic. The TGA measurements indicate that s-PCL 19 -CA 9 possesses a good thermal stability. Therefore, this work provides a new way for developing multifunctional bio-adhesives with excellent adhesion property and low swelling ratio.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been considered as a promising new tool to combat the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis. However, the high toxicity and high cost of AMPs hampered their further development. Herein, a series of star poly(L-lysine) (PLL) homo- and copolymers with excellent antimicrobial activity and improved biocompatibility were prepared by the combination of ultra-fast ring opening polymerization (ROP) and side-chain modification. The amine-terminated polyamidoamine dendrimer (Gx-PAMAM) mediated ROP of Nε-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydride (Boc-L-Lys-NCA) and γ-benzyl-L-glutamic acid-based N-carboxyanhydride (PBLG-NCA) was able to prepare star PLL homo- and copolymers with 400 residues within 50 min. While the star PLL homopolymers exhibited low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC = 50–200 μg mL−1) against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (i.e., S. aureus and E. coli), they showed high toxicity against various mammalian cell lines. The star PLL copolymers with low contents of hydrophobic and hydroxyl groups showed enhanced antimicrobial activity (MIC = 25–50 μg mL−1) and improved mammalian cell viability. Both SEM and CLSM results indicated the antimicrobial mechanism of membrane disruption.

The traditional antibiotics have specific intracellular targets and disinfect in chemical ways, and the drug-resistance induced by the antibiotics has grown into an emerging threat. It is urgent to call for novel strategies and antibacterial materials to control this situation. Herein, we report a class of silver-decorated nanocomposite AgNPs@PCL-b-AMPs as potent nanoantibiotic, constructed by ring-opening polymerization of the monomers ε-caprolactone, Z-Lys-N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs), and Phe-NCAs, then decorated with AgNPs, and characterized by SEM, TEM, and DLS. The biological assays revealed that the nanocomposite possessed strong antibacterial efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including clinical isolated bacteria MRSA, VRE, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumonia, exhibiting a MIC value range in 2–8 μg/mL. Importantly, the S. aureus and P. aeruginosa treated with the nanocomposite did not show drug-resistance even after 21 passages. Also, in vivo anti-infective assays showed that the nanocomposite was able to effectively kill bacteria in the infected viscera of mice. The study of the sterilization mechanism showed that the nanocomposite exhibited a multimodal antimicrobial mechanism, including irreversibly damaging the membrane structure, making the leakage of intracellular ions and subsequently inducing generation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), ultimately sterilizing the bacteria. The nanocomposite exhibits effective broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and shows low toxicity to the mammalian cells/animal. Overall, the AgNPs@PCL-b-AMPs gained in this work show great potential as a highly promising antibacterial material for biomedical applications including drug-resistant bacterial infection.

A series of multiarm star hydroxyl-terminated polyesters (MHPs) were synthesized through a “one-pot” method with di-trimethylolpropane as the core molecule, 2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid as the AB 2 -type monomer, ε-caprolactone, and monocarboxylic acids as modifiers. The influence of different monocarboxylic acids on the viscosities of polyesters and their 2K-PU films hardness was studied and it was found that MHPs prepared from lauric acid displayed the higher films hardness and lower viscosities. IR spectra of MHPs disclosed the ring-opening reaction between ε-caprolactone and hydroxyl groups occurred. 1 H NMR spectra demonstrated that the molecular structures of MHPs were irregular due to the multiplicity of reaction processes. The measured number-average molecular weights ( M
n ) of MHPs were around 715–1854 g/mol with the PDI of 1.45–2.05. MHPs exhibited lower viscosities in the range of 3304–9060 mPa s at 100% solid contents and possessed lower intrinsic viscosities compared with linear polymers of similar molecular weight. The cured films of MHPs exhibited excellent impact resistance, adhesion, flexibility, and high hardness and displayed good thermal stability with 5% weight loss at 280°C. The solution viscosities of MHPs were less than 450 mPa s at 80% solid contents, and the VOC contents of 2K-PU coatings obtained from MHPs were low to 300 g/L.

Research interest in electrochemical redox stimulus has grown considerably due to its easy trigger mode, in which the linkers have played important roles, such as the β-cyclodextrin-ferrocene (β-CD-Fc) linker. Star amphiphilic copolymers with well-defined and flexible structures are considered to be excellent choices for drug delivery systems (DDSs). Driven by the idea that using star polymers to improve the biocompatibility and efficiency of the β-CD-Fc-based DDS, we designed and synthesized star polymer 4 arm-poly(ε-caprolactone)-β-CD ( 4A PCL-CD ) and linear polymer polyethylene glycol-Fc ( PEG-Fc ). They can form supramolecular block copolymer 4A PCL-CD / Fc-PEG and self-assemble to micelles , which are electrochemical responsive and can be applied as drug carriers for potential controlled release, with higher efficiency and better biocompatibility compared with their linear analogues.

In this contribution, amphiphilic star copolymers (H40- star -PCL- a -PEG) with an H40 hyperbranched polyester core and poly(ε-caprolactone)- a -poly(ethylene glycol) copolymer arms linked with acetal groups are synthesized using ring-opening polymerization and a copper (I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition click reaction. The acid-cleavable acetal groups between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of the arms endow the amphiphilic star copolymers with pH responsiveness. In aqueous solution, unimolecular micelles can be formed with good stability and a unique acid degradability, as is desirable for anticancer drug carriers. For the model drug of doxorubicin, the in vitro release behavior, intracellular release, and inhibition of proliferation of HeLa cells show that the acid-cleavable unimolecular micelles with anticancer activity can be dissociated in an acidic environment and efficiently internalized by HeLa cells. Due to the acid-cleavable and biodegradable nature, unimolecular micelles from amphiphilic star copolymers are promising for applications in intracellular drug delivery for cancer chemotherapy.
