COF-reinforced tunable-degradation 5-FU@COF/PLLA-TPU coating with dual anti-sludge and anti- tumor hyperplasia for biliary stent restenosis prevention

Mingsheng Wang,Yunjie Chen,Yanghui Wen,Xiaomei Liu,Chang He,Yi Liu,Minghui Pan,Chao Pang,Hua Li

To overcome biliary stent failures caused by biofilm formation, bile sludge accumulation, and tumor-mediated restenosis, we designed a self-polishing, biodegradable coating by flame-spraying poly(L-lactic acid)/thermoplastic polyurethane (PLLA/TPU) composites incorporated with 5-fluorouracil-loaded covalent organic frameworks (5-FU@COF). This strategy integrates: 1) Programmable self-polishing via synergistic PLLA ester/urethane bond hydrolysis and pH-sensitive COF delamination, ensuring controlled erosion; 2) Mechanoadaptive reinforcement, where 5-FU@COF enhances coating-substrate adhesion by 111% (10FCLU: 3.19 MPa vs. LU:1.51 MPa) through COFs rigid filler anchoring and stress homogenization; and 3) Dual anti-biliary sludge accumulation/tumoricidal therapy enabled by 216.5 nm COF nanospheres achieving 43.1% 5-FU loading. The coatings resist biofouling via electrostatic repulsion and dynamic polishing, reducing bile salt coverage to 11.53% (vs. 47.44% on bare Ti). Biphasic 5-FU release from 10FCLU coating achieves 92.6% tumor Cholangiocarcinoma cell (RBE) inhibition for 3 days, validated by TEM ultrastructural apoptosis markers (nuclear fragmentation; mitochondrial collapse) and Korsmeyer-Peppas release kinetics. This multifunctional drug-loading coating enables next-generation biliary stents with sustained patency.

A stable amphiphilic hybrid nanoparticle compatibilizer constructed from polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) for immiscible thermoplastic polyurethane/methyl vinyl silicone elastomer (TPU/MVQ) blends

Fuyue Tian,Jing Hu,Yanyan Song,Nanying Ning,Bing Yu,Ming Tian

TPU/MVQ blends are widely used in biomedical electronic equipment, intelligent wearable materials, and other fields. As they are immiscible systems, compatibilization of TPU/MVQ blends is required. Several types of compatibilizers have been developed to enhance the compatibility between TPU and MVQ, but some challenges still exist such as poor amphiphilicity and difficulties in controlling their structures. In this study, modified POSS nanoparticles (NPs) with an octahedral cage structure and reactive functional groups were used as the matrix. POSS nanoparticles with stable amphiphilicity and easily controllable structures were successfully synthesized through grafting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chains and chain segments similar to polyurethane (PU). The compatibility with silicone rubber is enhanced by the physical entanglement between PDMS chains and MVQ, while PU analogues enhance the interfacial interaction with TPU through the combined effect of physical entanglement and hydrogen bonding. After compatibilization, the average diameter (Dn) of the dispersed phase with 10 wt% compatibilizers is only ∼1/5 compared with that without a compatibilizer, and the interface thickness is 4.1 times compared with that without a compatibilizer. Moreover, due to the Pickering effect, the obtained system is stable even after annealing at 180 °C, with the Dn value of the dispersed phase only increased by 7.5%, while the Dn value of the dispersed phase increased by 45.1% when using a commercial compatibilizer (silane modified polyurethane, abbreviated as V-165). The amphiphilic POSS nanoparticles not only provide an effective compatibilization solution for the industrial development of TPU/MVQ thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs), but also open up new avenues for the preparation of other incompatible blend materials.

Efficient Fabrication of TPU/MXene/Tungsten Disulfide Fibers with Ultra-Fast Response for Human Respiratory Pattern Recognition and Disease Diagnosis via Deep Learning

Jun Wang,Dongzhi Zhang,Dongyue Wang,Zhenyuan Xu,Hao Zhang,Xiaoya Chen,Zihu Wang,Hui Xia,Haolin Cai

Flexible wearable pressure sensors have received increasing attention as the potential application of flexible wearable devices in human health monitoring and artificial intelligence. However, the complex and expensive process of the conductive filler has limited its practical production and application on a large scale to a certain extent. This study presents a kind of piezoresistive sensor by sinking nonwoven fabrics (NWFs) into tungsten disulfide (WS2) and Ti3C2Tx MXene solutions. With the advantages of a simple production process and practicality, it is conducive to the realization of large-scale production. The assembled flexible pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (45.81 kPa–1), wide detection range (0–410 kPa), fast response/recovery time (18/36 ms), and excellent stability and long-term durability (up to 5000 test cycles). Because of the high elastic modulus of MXene and the synergistic effect between WS2 and MXene, the detection range and sensitivity of the piezoresistive pressure sensor are greatly improved, realizing the stable detection of human motion status in all directions. Meanwhile, its high sensitivity at low pressure allows the sensor to accurately detect weak signals such as weak airflow and wrist pulses. In addition, combining the sensor with deep-learning makes it easy to recognize human respiratory patterns with high accuracy, demonstrating its potential impact in the fields of ergonomics and low-cost flexible electronics.

Fabrication of heparinized small diameter TPU/PCL bi-layered artificial blood vessels and in vivo assessment in a rabbit carotid artery replacement model

Zhiping Fang,Yonghao Xiao,Xue Geng,Liujun Jia,Yuehao Xing,Lin Ye,Yongquan Gu,Ai-ying Zhang,Zeng-guo Feng

Increasingly growing problems in vascular access for long-term hemodialysis lead to a considerable demand for synthetic small diameter vascular prostheses, which usually suffer from some drawbacks and are associated to high failure rates. Incorporating the concept of in situ tissue engineering (TE) into synthetic small diameter blood vessels, for example, thermoplastic poly(ether urethane) (TPU) ones, could provide an alternative approach for vascular access that profits from the advantages of excellent mechanical properties of synthetic polymer materials (early cannulation) and unique biointegration regeneration of autologous neovascular tissues (long-term fistulae). In this study, a kind of heparinized small diameter (d = 2.5 mm) TPU/poly(ε-caprolactone) (TPU/PCL-Hep) bi-layered blood vessels was electrospun with an inner layer of PCL and an outer layer of TPU. Afterward, the inner surface heparinization was conducted by coupling H 2 N-PEG-NH 2 to the corroded PCL layer and then heparin to the attached H 2 N-PEG-NH 2 via the EDCI/NHS chemistry. Herein a heparinized PCL inner layer could not only inhibit thrombosis, but also provide sufficient space for the neotissue regeneration via biodegradation with time. Meanwhile, a TPU outer layer could confer the vascular access the good mechanical properties, such as flexibility, viability and fitness of elasticity between the grafts and host blood vessels as evidenced by the adequate mechanical properties, such as compliance (4.43 ± 0.07%/ 100 mmHg), burst pressure (1447 ± 127 mmHg) and suture retention strength (1.26 ± 0.07 N) without blood seepage after implantation. Furthermore, a rabbit carotid aortic replacement model for 5 months was demonstrated 100% animal survival and 86% graft patency. Puncture assay also revealed the puncture resistance and self-sealing (hemostatic time < 2 min). Histological analysis highlighted neotissue regeneration, host cell infiltration and graft remodeling in terms of extracellular matrix turnover. Altogether, these results showed promising aspects of small diameter TPU/PCL-Hep bi-layered grafts for hemodialytic vascular access applications.

Preparation of Nonfouling Zwitterionic Coatings by Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition under Ambient Pressure

Chengchao Chu,Sihang Liu,Haoyu Xiong,Ziyin Xiang,Yichuan Hu,Shengfu Chen

Nonspecific protein adsorption significantly impacts the performance of biomedical devices in both hemocompatibility and tissue compatibility. Polyzwitterionic coatings are a promising solution. However, conventional zwitterionic coatings always have to rely on sophisticated wet chemistry methods, leading to low controllability and high cost. In this work, zwitterionic coatings were prepared by nitrogen plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of precursors for 90 s under ambient pressure followed by hydrolysis. The results showed that the PECVD-coated thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), Tecoflex, effectively resists nonspecific protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and bacterial adhesion without changing the mechanic properties of TPU. This approach simplified the zwitterionic coating process with highly controllability, showing a promising potential for the surface modification of biomedical devices.

Bilayer TPU films integrating pH-responsive bromocresol purple–fluorescein indicators and carvacrol/tea tree oil-loaded HKUST-1@alkaline lignin: Visualization, controlled release, and meat preservation

Liuzi Du,Xiaodong Zhai,Xinyang Han,Ke Zhang,Junjun Zhang,Xiaobo Zou,Zhihua Li,Zhikun Yang,Quancai Sun,Ye Peng,Xiaowei Huang

A bilayer TPU film integrating volatile-amine-responsive colorimetric sensing and sustained antibacterial release. • Bromocresol purple/fluorescein enabled dual colorimetric and fluorescent responses over a broad pH range. • Carvacrol/tea tree oil-loaded L/HKUST-1 inhibited both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. • The film showed reversible responses to NH 3 , DMA, and TMA, while ΔE correlated well with beef TVB-N ( R 2  = 0.9417). • The bilayer film delayed refrigerated beef deterioration by about 4 days and enabled freshness monitoring. A bilayer TPU-based intelligent packaging film integrating colorimetric sensing and antibacterial preservation was developed. The film consisted of a dense cast TPU indicator layer containing a bromocresol purple/fluorescein indicator and an electrospun TPU antibacterial layer loaded with lignin-modified HKUST-1 loaded with carvacrol and tea tree oil. The indicator showed reversible responses to ammonia, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine, with detection limits of 0.37, 0.15, and 0.18 μ M, respectively. Lignin modification improved the aqueous structural retention of HKUST-1, and the electrospun layer exhibited sustained, pH-dependent release of the antibacterial components. Water vapor permeability was further evaluated under both 25 and 4 °C conditions. The film showed antibacterial activity against the four tested bacterial strains ( Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Bacillus subtilis ), while its extracts caused no detectable cytotoxicity under the tested conditions. In refrigerated beef, the selected TBF3-T-LH@CT formulation delayed quality deterioration by approximately 4 days and provided visible freshness indication from yellow to orange-red. The color variation correlated well with beef spoilage indicators, supporting visual freshness monitoring. These results demonstrate the potential of the bilayer film for intelligent active food packaging. Download: Download high-res image (212KB) Download: Download full-size image

AgNWs/TPU based Joule heating and strain sensing yarn with temperature visualization through the coordinated regulation of multiple conductive pathways for physical exercise and health monitoring

Tao Yan,Xiaole Tao,Hong Lei,Yang Qiu,Zirui Han,Kaitai Wei,Bin He,Yuting Wu,Zhijuan Pan

Flexible heating/strain sensing fiber devices have wide potential application in the fields of the real-time monitoring performance of human movement and physiological information and thermal management. However, there are still shortcomings in multi-functional integration and information visualization. In this work, the hollow thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU) nanofiber yarn was constructed by conjugate electrospinning technology, and Joule heating/strain sensing yarn was developed by continuous conductive treatment and twisting technology. Finally, the thermochromic sheath layer was constructed on the surface of the composite yarn to prepare the Joule heating/strain sensing yarn with the visible temperature(VHSY). The results showed that VHSY can detect both tensile and bending deformation. The excellent dynamic/static stability and durability were obtained as a flexible strain sensor. The GF values reached 23.08 in the strain range of 30 % and 170.02 in the strain range of 30 % to 50 %, respectively. In addition, VHSY exhibited a reversible color change of yellow-gray-blue-purple in the range of 25–60 °C, and the stable static and dynamic electric heating performance was obtained. The response times of heating and cooling temperature were 9.95 s and 10.62 s, respectively. VHSY held the excellent visualization function and strain sensing performance after 20 washes. This sensor has great potential applications for physical exercise and health monitoring. The work offers a novel strategy for the design of multifunctional yarn-based wearable devices and smart textiles.

Hierarchical polypyrrole@MXene (Ti3C2TX) fiber strain sensors for wearable healthcare electronics

Zeyu Wang,Fengkai Zhou,Yimeng Li,Shasha Wang,Wei Li,Haizhi Liu,Meiqi Hu,Fujun Wang,Lu Wang,Jifu Mao

Flexible sensors are an important component of wearable medical electronics and hold considerable promise for research. Presently, stretchable strain sensors face two primary challenges: balancing the sensing range with sensitivity, and ensuring compatibility between conductivity and mechanical properties. Here, flexible sensing fibers with high gauge factor (GF) and wide monitoring range are reported based on a hierarchical structure composed of electrostatic adsorption principle and hydrogen bonding interactions. The hierarchical structure material consists of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), MXene, polypyrrole (PPy) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Among them, MXene (2D) and PPy (3D) are uniformly distributed on the surface of the MXene/TPU fiber (1D) to form a conductive and sensing pathway. This multi-dimensional combination approach enables the fiber sensor to have a high sensing range (0 ∼ 106 %) and high sensitivity (60 ∼ 3.23 × 10 6 ). In addition, the WPU acts as a protective layer, which not only reduces the damage to the sensing layer, but also improves the stretchability (>750 %) and modulus (∼12 MPa) of the sensor. Therefore, it can function as fiber sensor for monitoring not only human movement but also swelling in the legs of patients with varicose veins. The sensor also has a joule heating effect, as well as the potential to be integrated into fabrics, providing an important case for the construction of multifunctional flexible wearable medical electronics with practical applications.

An Integrated Bifunctional Pressure‒Temperature Sensing System Fabricated on a Breathable Nanofiber and Powered by Rechargeable Zinc–Air Battery for Long-Term Comfortable Health Care Monitoring

Wang Peng,Liu Gengsheng,Sun Guifen,Meng Chuizhou,Shen Guozhen,Li Yang

Bulky external power supplies largely limit the continuous long-term application and miniaturization development of smart sensing devices. Here, we fabricate a flexible and wearable integrated sensing system on an electrospun all-nanofiber platform. The three parts of the sensing system are all obtained by a facile ink-based direct writing method. The resistive pressure sensor is realized by decorating MXene sheets on TPU nanofiber. And, the resistive temperature sensor is prepared by compositing MXene sheets into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The thin-film zinc–air battery (ZAB) includes an interdigital zinc–air electrode that is bonded with a gel polymer electrolyte. It can supply a high open-circuit voltage of 1.39 V and a large areal capacity of 18.2 mAh cm −2 for stable and reliable power-supplying sensing parts operation. Thanks to the hydrophobic nature of TPU and open-ended micropores in the TPU nanofiber, the sensing system is waterproof, self-cleaning, and air and moisture permeable. For application, the above-mentioned functional components are seamlessly integrated into an intelligent electronic wristband, which is comfortably worn on a human wrist to monitor pulse and body temperature in real time with continuous operation of up to 4 h. By the novel design and remarkable performance, the proposed integrated all-nanofiber sensing system presents a promising solution for developing advanced multifunctional wearable electronics. Graphical Abstract We developed an integrated sensing system on a flexible and breathable thermoplastic polyurethane nanofiber platform. The sensing system is realized by a direct write technology and includes a pressure sensor, temperature sensor, and rechargeable zinc–air battery. The integrated sensing system was designed for wristbands and demonstrated to accurately detect pulse beating and skin temperature under different states for up to 4 hours of wearing.

Jingwen Wang,Shun Liu,Zhaoyang Chen,Taoyu Shen,Yalong Wang,Rui Yin,Hu Liu,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

With the rapid development of wearable electronic skin technology, flexible strain sensors have shown great application prospects in the fields of human motion and physiological signal detection, medical diagnostics, and human-computer interaction owing to their outstanding sensing performance. This paper reports a strain sensor with synergistic conductive network, consisting of stable carbon nanotube dispersion (CNT) layer and brittle MXene layer by dip-coating and electrostatic self-assembly method, and breathable three-dimensional (3D) flexible substrate of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibrous membrane prepared through electrospinning technology. The MXene/CNT@PDA-TPU (MC@p-TPU) flexible strain sensor had excellent air permeability, wide operating range (0–450%), high sensitivity (Gauge Factor, GF max  = 8089.7), ultra-low detection limit (0.05%), rapid response and recovery times (40 ms/60 ms), and excellent cycle stability and durability (10000 cycles). Given its superior strain sensing capabilities, this sensor can be applied in physiological signals detection, human motion pattern recognition, and driving exoskeleton robots. In addition, MC@p-TPU fibrous membrane also exhibited excellent photothermal conversion performance and can be used as a wearable photo-heater, which has far-reaching application potential in the photothermal therapy of human joint diseases.
