Cubic α- and hexagonal β-phase lanthanide luminescent NaYF4:Eu3+/Tb3+ nanostructures with diverse morphologies were successfully synthesized via a mild solvothermal method. The effects of the synthetic parameters on the crystal phase structure, size and morphology of NaYF4:Eu3+/Tb3+ nanostructures were systematically investigated. By modifying the synthetic parameters, the crystal phase structure, size and morphology were well controlled, and the phase transition from cubic α- to hexagonal β- can be easily realized. Furthermore, the morphology evolution is revealed, and the surfactant modulating formation mechanisms with diverse morphologies was proposed. The photoluminescence properties were found to be in close correlation with their composition, phase structure and morphology. NaYF4:Eu3+/Tb3+ nanostructures possessing unique morphologies and highly efficient luminescence may find potential applications in optoelectronics, sensors and biolabels.

A core–shell hybrid nanostructure was prepared by combining NaYF4 doped with the lanthanide dopant Tb3+ as shell layer materials and noble metal nanoparticles (Au and Ag) as cores. For the core–shell system, the luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) was demonstrated, in which noble metal nanoparticles as fluorescence quenchers can absorb the emission energy of the α-NaYF4:Tb3+ donor. The morphology, structure, composition and properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, respectively. In the Au/Ag@NaYF4:Tb3+ system, it is observed that the plasmonic absorption bands of gold or silver nanoparticles overlap with the emission bands of 5D4 → 7Fj (j = 6, 5) transition of the Tb3+ ions, and the emission intensity of the 5D4 → 7F5 transition is clearly attenuated. The photoluminescence decay curve measurements show that the lifetimes of the 5D4 → 7F6 and 5D4 → 7F5 transitions of Tb3+ are slightly decreased in the presence of gold or silver cores. The quenching efficiency of the gold and silver nanoparticles implies that the efficiency of energy transfer is highly dependent on the extent of spectral overlap in the LRET system.

Greenlight is a sensitive band of the human eye, improving the luminous quality of the green part is crucial to the performance improvement of LED. However, the application prospects for Tb 3+ are greatly limited by its 4f-4f forbidden transition. In this study, we successfully synthesized Ba 2 MgY 2 (BO 3 ) 3 :Ce 3+ blue phosphor which effectively enhances its luminous properties through energy transfer. By introducing both Ce 3+ and Tb 3+ into the Ba 2 MgY 2 (BO 3 ) 3 matrix, an energy transfer efficiency of 50.6 % is achieved between these two ions, resulting in a remarkable 13.1-fold increase in Tb 3+ luminous intensity. The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the sample is measured at 63 %, while the external quantum efficiency (EQE) reaches 30 %. Furthermore, it exhibits good thermal stability and promising applications in temperature sensing due to the sensitivity and coordinated luminescence of Ce 3+ and Tb 3+ ions at different temperatures. Finally, when combined with a 365 nm chip, this sample produces a white LED (WLED) with a color rendering index (CRI) of 81.6 and a correlation color temperature (CCT) of 4330 K.

The anomalous luminescence thermal quenching performance caused by negative thermal expansion has attracted much attention due to the potential application in optical fields . However, the downshifting emissions with abnormal thermal quenching achieved by isotropic negative thermal expansion for optical temperature sensing applications are still lacking. Herein, a large enhancement of red emission and a high temperature sensing performance are realized by isotropic negative thermal expansion in ScF 3 :Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphors ceramics. Specially, a selectively thermal enhanced red emission of Eu 3+ from 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 with hypersensitive transition characteristics could be obtained due to the thermal stimulated lattice distortion . Attributing to the shortening of cation spacing, the energy transfer efficiency between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ is largely enhanced with the increasing of the temperature from 303 to 473 K. The enhanced energy transfer leads to that the emission of Tb 3+ firstly increases and then slightly decreases, whereas the emission from Eu 3+ has been largely improved. Finally, an optical temperature sensing strategy based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of the sensitizer Tb 3+ (signal ions) and the activator Eu 3+ (referring ions) is designed, attributing to the distinguishable luminescence response to the temperature. The obtained maximum relative sensitivity is 1.04 % K −1 (@303 K). Besides, the sensing strategy based on lifetime mode also suggests a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.00 % K −1 at 343 K. It provides a feasible strategy to obtain an optical temperature sensing material with high emission efficiency at a high temperature, which sheds light on the design of luminescence materials keeping high luminescence stability in a wide temperature range in the fields of optical temperature sensing.

In this study, we design a controlled release system based on CaF 2 :Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ -poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) composite microspheres , which were fabricated by filling the pH-responsive PAA inside CaF 2 :Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ hollow spheres via photopolymerization route. The CaF 2 :Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ hollow spheres prepared by hydrothermal route possess mesoporous structure and show strong green fluorescence from Tb 3+ under UV excitation. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), a widely used anti-cancer drug, was used as a model drug to evaluate the loading and controlled release behaviors of the composite microspheres due to the good biocompatibility of the samples using MTT assay . The composite carriers provide a strongly pH-dependent drug release behavior owing to the intrinsic property of PAA and its interactions with DOX. The endocytosis process of drug-loaded microspheres was observed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and the in vitro cytotoxic effect against SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells of the DOX-loaded carriers was investigated. In addition, the extent of drug release could be monitored by the altering of photoluminescence (PL) intensity of CaF 2 :Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ . Considering the good biocompatibility, high drug loading content and pH-dependent drug release of the materials, these hybrid luminescent microspheres have potential applications in drug controlled release and disease therapy.

Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) doped bismuth-based inorganic compounds have attracted considerable interest as promising candidates for next-generation inorganic luminescent materials. Here, a series of K0.3Bi0.7F2.4(KBF) nanocrystalline particles with controlled morphology have been synthesized through a low-temperature aqueous-phase precipitation method. Using KBF as the host matrix, Eu3+, Tb3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+,and Dy3+ions are introduced to obtain K0.3Bi0.7F2.4:Ln3+(KBF:Ln) nanophosphors. The as-prepared KBF:Ln nanophosphors exhibit commendable photoluminescence properties, in which multicolor emissions in a single host lattice can be obtained by doping different Ln3+ions when excited by ultraviolet light. Moreover, the morphology and photoluminescence performance of these nanophosphors remain unchanged under different soaking times in water, showing good stability in a humid environment. The proposed simple and rapid synthesis route, low-cost and nontoxic bismuth-based host matrix, and tunable luminescent colors will lead the way to access these KBF:Ln nanophosphors for appealing applications such as white LEDs and optical thermometry.

Well-crystallized and uniform NaGd(MoO4)2 microcrystals with morphologies of bipyramids, truncated bipyramids, quasi-cubes and tetragonal plates were selectively synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method without any additives under mild conditions. The effects of Na2MoO4/Gd(NO3)3 molar ratios and pH values of precursor solutions on the phase and morphology of the as-synthesized microcrystals were systematically investigated. The molar ratios and pH values played key roles in the selective synthesis of pure phase NaGd(MoO4)2 microcrystals with regular morphology. With increasing Na2MoO4/Gd(NO3)3 molar ratios in the appropriate pH range, the morphology of the products changed from bipyramids, truncated bipyramids, quasi-cubes to tetragonal plates, namely, the morphological truncation degree increased gradually. NaGd(MoO4)2 tetragonal microplates could be synthesized at the molar ratio of 9 : 1. A possible morphological formation mechanism of NaGd(MoO4)2 tetragonal microplates was proposed, i.e. nucleation-Ostwald ripening growth process. Color tunable photoluminescence properties of NaGd(MoO4)2:Eu3+,Tb3+ microcrystals were studied in detail. Among the different morphologies of NaGd(MoO4)2:5% Eu3+ microcrystals, tetragonal microplates had a broadened, red-shifted and enhanced charge transfer band in the excitation spectrum. What's more, the full-width at half-maximum for the charge transfer band of the tetragonal plates was highest (58 nm), which favored efficient excitation and absorption in the ultraviolet region. The introduction of a small amount of Tb3+ into NaGd(MoO4)2 microplates doped with Eu3+ would enhance the 5D0 → 7FJ transition of Eu3+ at 616 nm due to the energy transfer process of cross-relaxation from Tb3+ to Eu3+. Multicolor tunable luminescence from deep red, red, orange, yellow to green under 291 nm ultraviolet excitation and from red, reddish orange to pink under 380 nm near-ultraviolet excitation could be obtained in NaGd(MoO4)2 tetragonal microplates by simply adjusting the doping concentrations of Eu3+ and Tb3+, suggesting NaGd(MoO4)2:Eu3+,Tb3+ microcrystals might have practical application in optoelectronic devices, such as light emitting diodes and color display systems. This facile morphology-controlled hydrothermal synthesis strategy was simple, low-cost and environment-friendly, and might be extended to other inorganic materials.

A series green emission phosphors Sr 3 Lu 2 (BO 3 ) 4 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ (denoted as SLBO:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ) with broad absorption band matching well with UV LED chip were synthesized by the solid–state reaction method. The phase and structure were analyzed with XRD , EDX , FT-IR measurements. The energy transfer between Ce 3+ and Tb 3+ in SLBO was proved by spectra and decay curves detailedly. The emission colors vary from blue to green by adjusting the ratio of Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ doped concentration. With temperature increasing, SLBO:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphor shows well thermal stability that emission intensity retains 70% of its initial at 25 °C even temperature rising to 150 °C. The internal and external quantum efficiency of SLBO:3%Ce 3+ ,8%Tb 3+ are 77.5% and 34.8% under 340 nm excitation, respectively. Combining the as-synthesized SLBO:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ and red emission phosphor CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ coated on a 365 nm UV chip, a warm white LEDs device with CRI of 83 was achieved. All the results indicate that the SLBO:Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphor has potential application in UV pumped white LEDs.

In recent years, rare earth ions doping has enhanced the luminescence performance of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) glass, but the enhancement mechanism caused by internal energy transfer deserves further study. In this work, a series of CsPbBr3 PQDs doped with different concentrations of Tb3+ ions was prepared in germanium borate glass matrix by traditional melt quenching method and heat treatment process. The experimental results indicate that after introducing Tb3+ ions into the PQDs glass, the photoluminescence intensity has been significantly enhanced, and the photoluminescence quantum yield increased from 14.8% to 46.1%. The occurrence of this phenomenon can be attributed not only to the role of Tb3+ as a nucleating agent in PQDs glass which facilitates the formation of more small-sized CsPbBr3 but also replaces Pb2+, thereby alleviating lattice distortion and passivating defects. Moreover, the core mechanism lies in the energy transfer process between Tb3+ and CsPbBr3. It has been verified that there not only has a radiative photon reabsorption process that Tb3+ can releases photons for CsPbBr3 to absorb but also has a Förster resonance energy transfer process that Tb3+ directly transfers energy to CsPbBr3 in a non-radiative form. Finally, considering the differing thermal attenuation rates of Tb3+ and CsPbBr3 in glass, a temperature-dependent luminescence color-tuning strategy is proposed, which has potential application value in the field of temperature sensing.

CaNb 2 O 6 :Tb 3+ green phosphors have been successfully fabricated via the traditional solid-state synthesis, where the nanocrystalline TbB 6 is used as efficient activator. The doping effects of nanocrystalline TbB 6 on the phase composition, the microstructure and photoluminescence of as-prepared phosphors were characterized by means of Rietveld refinement XRD , FESEM and photoluminescence measurements. As a result, all the synthesized CaNb 2 O 6 :Tb 3+ phosphors are composed by the single phase of CaNb 2 O 6 . The photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy shows that the maximum emission intensity occurred when the nanocrystalline TbB 6 doping concentration is x = 0.06. Moreover, this phosphor keep the emission intensity remains about 43.3% of 300 K when its emission temperature increase to 423 K. Additionally, the white LED is fabricated by mixing present green phosphor with commercial blue and yellow phosphors, showing a white LED with the color temperature of 5152 K. On the basis of above mentioned, Ca 0·94 Nb 2 O 6 :0.06TbB 6 phosphor can be applied as a potential green phosphor for high-performance white LED.

Thiabendazole (TBZ), has been extensively employed as a pesticide and/or a fungicide in agriculture, while its residues would threaten to public health and safety. Simple, rapid and sensitive probes for detection of TBZ in real food samples is significantly desirable. In present work, a highly selective and sensitive luminescent sensor for monitoring TBZ in oranges has been constructed based on a Tb 3+ -functionalized Zr-MOF (Tb 3+ @ 1 ). Tb 3+ @ 1 exhibited many attractive sensing properties toward TBZ, including broad linear range (0–80 μM), high selectivity, low LOD (0.271 μM) and rapid response time (less than1 min). Moreover, the probe was employed to determine TBZ in real orange samples, in which good recoveries from 98.41 to 104.48% were obtained. It only takes 35 min for the whole process of detection TBZ in real orange samples combined with QuEChERS method. Therefore, this work provided a reliable and rapid method for monitoring the TBZ in real orange samples.

Developing highly efficient and stable inorganic narrow-band green-emitting phosphor is crucial for phosphor converted backlighting devices. In this study, trivalent Tb 3+ ions self-actived NaTb(MoO 4 ) 2 (NTM) narrow-band green-emitting phosphor was prepared by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The electronic structure, luminescence properties and luminescence thermal stability of NTM were studied through experiments and theoretical calculations. The structure of NTM was determined to be a tetragonal phase with the space group of I41/a (88). Besides, the NTM was confirmed with direct bandgap characteristics with bandgap width of 3.1231 eV. Upon 266 nm and 355 nm ultraviolet (UV) excitation, the narrow-band green-emitting properties of the phosphor were investigated. Importantly, the phosphor was confirmed with well luminescence thermal stability and the thermal activation energy ( E a ) was fitted to be 0.32 eV. The work demonstrates that trivalent Tb 3+ ions self-actived NTM is promising as high luminescence stable narrow-band green-emitting phosphor for backlighting display applications.
