A novel hierarchically porous magnetic ZnFe 2 O 4 /MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was reported as an effective adsorbent for the elimination of Congo Red (CR) from water. Three-dimensional stackable MgAl-LDH nanosheets synthesized through hydrothermal method were attached to the surface of ZnFe 2 O 4 microsphere , using the inexpensive, non-toxic, quick and simple bio-template technique. Mg/Al molar ratios played a crucial role in crystal phase synthesis and adsorption capacity. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of CR adsorption by ZnFe 2 O 4 /MgAl-LDH were also investigated. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order. The maximum adsorption capacity (294.12 mg g −1 ) was obtained by the ZnFe 2 O 4 /MgAl-LDH with Mg/Al molar of 2, which was more productive than the base adsorbent without MgAl-LDH attaching (28.58 mg g −1 ). Adsorption isotherm revealed Langmuir-type monolayer adsorption. The adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Absorbents fabricated in this work could be easily regenerated by rinsing the material in methanol and magnetically separated from the solution. Adsorbent synthesized in this work is very promising composite for purification of water from toxic chemicals.

Constructing a reasonable dielectric-magnetic synergistic effect is an effective way to prepare high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbers. In this paper, ZnFe2O4@SiO2/C composites with a close-packed structure were successfully synthesized by an efficient condensation reaction of a silane coupling agent and high-temperature mechanochemical technology. The silane coupling agent can effectively adjust the occurrence state of ZnFe2O4 and the graphite interlayer compound, so as to realize the adjustable electromagnetic parameters. When the ratio of silane coupling agent, deionized water, and anhydrous ethanol is 1:1:1, ZnFe2O4@SiO2/C composites achieve a minimum reflection loss value (RLmin) of −52.5 dB at a thickness of 1.87 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) of 4.16 GHz at a thickness of 2.07 mm. In addition, the EAB covers 8–12 GHz at a thickness of 1.97 mm, achieving efficient absorption of X-band electromagnetic waves. Through the optimization of structure and composition, the problems of large thickness and limited electromagnetic wave performance of ZnFe2O4/C composites are effectively improved, which provides a way for the design and large-scale preparation of ZnFe2O4-based absorbers with high electromagnetic wave absorption performance in the X-band.

An energy-efficient and environmentally friendly nitrogen fixation process is urgently needed to solve problems of high energy consumption and high emissions in the traditional ammonia industry. In this work, a Z-scheme porous g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFe 2 O 4 photocatalyst was synthesized, characterized and employed for N 2 photofixation. Temperature programmed desorption characterization confirmed that the adsorption capacity of nitrogen was improved for the porous structure. From N 2 photofixation evaluation experiments, the highest ammonia production efficiency can reach 147.33 μmol/L within 120 min. Photocatalytic performance is greatly improved because of the increasing of specific surface areas, enhancement of N 2 adsorption ability and synergistic effect of Z-scheme photocatalytic system. In the ammonia production process of the research, visible light is used as energy; N 2 and H 2 O are used as raw materials, which possesses a good application potential due to the advantages of being energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and pollution-free.

A facile MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric platform for quantitative analysis of protein biomarkers was developed based on magnetic ZnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles and mass tagging signal amplification. In this platform, magnetic ZnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles functionalized with an aptamer of the biomarker of interest was used to magnetically separate silica nanoparticles modified with another aptamer of the target biomarker and a barcoding peptide from solution phase in the presence of the biomarker of interest. After the silica nanoparticles were dissolved by KHF 2 , the released barcoding peptide was detected by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry with magnetic ZnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles used as assisting matrix of laser desorption ionization. Since the mass spectral intensity of the barcoding peptide is directly related to the concentration of the target biomarker, the proposed platform can be applied to the quantification of the target biomarker in complex biological samples. The effectiveness of the proposed platform was tested on the detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum. Experimental results revealed that the proposed platform could achieve quite reliable quantitative results for CEA in human serum samples with accuracy comparable to a commercial CEA ELISA Kit. Its limit of detection and limit of quantification for CEA were estimated to be 0.6 × 10 −3 and 1.8 × 10 −3 ng/mL, respectively, considerably lower than the corresponding values reported in literature. Due to its features of simplicity in design, extremely low background signal, high sensitivity and selectivity , the proposed method can be further developed to be a competitive alternative for the quantification of CEA and other protein biomarkers as well.

Development of highly efficient photocatalysts is a primary goal in the photocatalysis domain among which reusable composites with a synergistic photocatalytic effect have attracted extensive interest. The ability of catalysts to capture light determines their photocatalytic effect, and porous or hollow photocatalysts are more conducive to the entry and reflection of light. The goal of this research is to develop a type of visible-light-driven, double-shell photocatalyst with high antibacterial activity and excellent cycling stability. Photocatalysts were fabricated using hollow graphitized ZnFe2O4 nanospheres (G-ZnFe2O4) as the carrier. After G-ZnFe2O4 was functionalized with a polydopamine (PDA) template layer, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and cubic AgCl NPs were in situ generated on the surface of the PDA/G-ZnFe2O4 nanospheres successively. Then, the PDA template was removed using KOH solution, and double-shell Ag/AgCl/G-ZnFe2O4 nanocubes (referred to as DAGZNs) with excellent photocatalytic antibacterial activity were constructed. The DAGZNs showed excellent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The efficient synergistic photocatalytic antibacterial activity coupled with magnetic separability and recyclability of DAGZNs make them potential for practical application in water purification and environmental protection. The method of designing and synthesizing double-shell structures to enhance photocatalysis may also be extended to synthesis of other photocatalytic and optical materials.

During the planting, storage, or feeding stages, foodstuffs can be easily polluted by mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B 1 , patulin and zearalenone, which are produced by pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, the removal of these mycotoxins constitutes an active area of research. Herein, we used an Fe/Zn metal–organic framework (MOF) as a precursor to fabricate a novel La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon magnetic hybrid composite via a simple absorption–pyrolysis method and explored its photocatalytic performance in the degradation of aflatoxin B 1 , patulin, and zearalenone. La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon can effectively degrade 98.37% of aflatoxin B 1 , outperforming Fe 3 O 4 @carbon (69.57%) and ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon (91.39%). Moreover, La–ZnFe 2 O 4 @Fe 3 O 4 @carbon exhibits superior stability and excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of patulin (97.35%) and zearalenone (98.52%). Transient photocurrent response measurements reveal that the La doping and the combination with ZnFe 2 O 4 highly promote the separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs on Fe 3 O 4 @carbon. An electron spin resonance analysis suggests that · OH and · O 2 − are the main active radicals during the photodegradation process. Thus, a plausible photodegradation pathway for the degradation of mycotoxins produced by pathogenic microorganisms is proposed.

The structural properties of octahedral sites (B Oh ) in spinel oxides (AB 2 O 4 ) play vital roles in the electrochemical performance of oxygen-related reactions. However, the precise manipulation of AB 2 O 4 remains challenging due to the complexity of their crystal structure. Here, a simple and versatile molten-salt-mediated strategy is reported to introduce Ni 2+ in B oh sites intentionally on the surface of zinc ferrite (ZnFe 2 O 4 , ZFO) to promote the active sites for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The as-created photoanode (ZFO-MSNi) shows a remarkable cathodic shift of ≈ 450 mV (turn-on voltage of ≈ 0.6 V RHE ) as well as three times the 1-sun photocurrent density at 1.23 V RHE for PEC water oxidation in comparison with bare ZFO. A comprehensive structural characterization clearly reveals the local structure of the introduced Ni 2+ in ZFO-MSNi. Fewer surface trapping states are observed while the precisely introduced Ni 2+ and associated neighboring Fe (3- σ )+ (0< σ <1) sites unite in an edge-sharing octahedral configuration to function as Ni Fe dual active sites for PEC water oxidation. Moreover, open circuit potential measurements and rapid-scan voltammetry investigation give further insight into the enhanced PEC performance. Overall, this work displays a versatile strategy to regulate the surface active sites of photoelectrodes for increasing performance in PEC solar energy conversion systems.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as hazardous gaseous pollutants, have attracted much attention due to their potential threat to both human health and the environment. Accordingly, photocatalysis technology is seen as a promising technology to control low concentration VOCs due to its mild operation conditions, low energy consumption, and mineralization ability. However, there are some issues with photocatalysts, such as low light utility and fast photogenerated carrier recombination, which need to be addressed for practical applications. In this work, novel nitrogen-doped carbon dot (NCD)-modified ZnFe2O4 yolk–shell nanostructure photocatalysts were fabricated for the first time. The yolk–shell structure of ZnFe2O4 efficiently shortened the photogenerated carrier migration path and enhanced light scattering in its void, while the decorated NCDs accelerated the charge transfer from the bulk to the surface. A series of characterizations was conducted to investigate the crystal structure, elemental status, optical properties, and photocatalytic performance of the obtained composite photocatalysts. The NCD-modified ZnFe2O4 yolk–shell photocatalysts exhibited both a wide spectral absorbance and low carrier recombination, resulting in high photocatalytic activity and degradation ability towards gaseous o-dichlorobenzene. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that the NCDs effectively promoted charge transfer and weakened the recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. Additionally, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was performed to investigate the degradation path in the photocatalytic process, and an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) radical trapping experiment was conducted to unveil the reactive oxygen species involved in the system. Combining the results obtained, the synergistic effect in the enhancement of photocatalysis between NCDs and yolk–shell ZnFe2O4 was schematically proposed.

Neonicotinoids as one of the newest major class of insecticides is a kind of persistent pollutants. Herein, copper-substituted zinc ferrites (Cu 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 ) prepared in subcritical aqueous solution has a nanosize of ∼2 nm with high crystallinity and strong magnetic property. At low catalyst dosage of 0.05 g L −1 , peroxymonosulfate (PMS) can be effectively converted into sulfate radicals in Cu 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 /PMS system. Thiamethoxam (THIA) degradation rate is in the order of Cu 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 > CuFe 2 O 4 > ZnFe 2 O 4 (124, 84, 21 × 10 −3 min −1 , respectively). At pH ∼7.0, THIA degradation efficiency can be over 99 % in 40 min. The radical species ( e.g. , HO • , SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 ) were demonstrated by EPR spectra using probe molecules. The majority effects in Cu 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 /PMS system with kinetics modelling were comprehensively investigated as well. This work provides that multi-metal coupling, i.e. , Cu(Ⅰ)/Cu(Ⅱ) & Fe(Ⅱ)/Fe(Ⅲ), in spinel structure by polyhedral design is an effective strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity. The Cu 0.75 Zn 0.25 Fe 2 O 4 /PMS system has promising for water treatment of neonicotinoid insecticide with ease of recycling catalysts by magnetic separation.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance remains fundamentally constrained by sluggish surface carrier transfer kinetics, a phenomenon closely linked to surface state (SS) electronic structures yet complicated by ambiguous and contested structure–property relationships. To address this limitation, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4, ZFO) photoanodes functionalized with surface single-atom Pt sites were developed, synergistically assisted by oxygen vacancy engineering. At 1.23 VRHE, the optimized ZFO photoanode achieved a 35-fold enhancement in photocurrent density (0.7 mA cm–2) compared to unmodified ZFO (0.02 mA cm–2). Multimodal spectroscopy analyses identified SS reconstruction as the fundamental mechanism for PEC performance enhancement and revealed a bias-dependent mediating mechanism. In contrast to conventional detrimental SS as recombination centers, the reconfigured beneficial SS with optimized state position and density demonstrate effectively suppressed recombination and significantly improved surface carrier transfer. This work provides mechanistic insights into single-atom cocatalysts and supports photoelectrode design through atomic-scale surface state reconstruction.

The rapid increase of battery and carbon waste has raised an urgent demand for efficient recycling methods, along with the development of environmentally friendly energy storage materials. In this study, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4, ZFO) was synthesized from spent batteries, while graphene nanosheets (GNs) was obtained from recycled carbon, and then combined to form ZFO@G composites for supercapacitor applications. Characterization techniques including XRD, Raman, SEM, and electrochemical analyses (CV, GCD, EIS) were employed to elucidate the crystal structure, surface morphology, and electrochemical performance of the materials. The results reveal that the incorporation of GNs improves the electrochemical performance of ZFO, delivering a specific capacitance of 606.69 F g–1 at 1 A g–1 with a capacitance retention of ∼58.8% after prolonged cycling. This study not only demonstrates the potential of recycled materials for supercapacitor applications but also contributes to mitigating environmental issues caused by battery waste.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) H 2 S splitting offers a dual-functional strategy for sustainable hydrogen sulfide valorization and atmospheric remediation, but it is still hindered by sluggish charge dynamics and poor stability. Here, we pioneer a hierarchical ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP photoanode that synergistically integrates heterojunction engineering and surface cocatalyst modification to address these challenges. The enhanced photoinduced carrier separation is accomplished by ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 through accelerated charge transfer kinetics with role of built-in electric field and hybrid energy bands. Corresponding sulfur oxidization photocurrent density of 2.24 mA/cm 2 is achieved that is 8.30 folds higher than that of pristine ZnFe 2 O 4 . Subsequent modification with NiCoP nanoparticles further optimizes the surface electronic states, which include increased DOS and decreased R ct,trap , leading to accelerated charge injection dynamics and suppressed carrier recombination at the surface. Meanwhile, PEC stability of the heterojunction is increased to 77 % from 62 % stemmed from desulphurization role of NiCoP protective layer, that is extremely higher than 44 % of ZnFe 2 O 4 . The prime PEC sulfur oxidization reaction kinetics are displayed by ZnFe 2 O 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP with charge transfer efficiency improved to 22.70 % from 2.45 %. Hence, sulfur oxidization photocurrent density of ZnFe 2 O 4 is enhanced to 3.44 mA/cm 2 from 0.27 mA/cm 2 with light absorption edge of 558 nm. This work not only demonstrates the highest reported PEC H 2 S splitting performance but also provides a universal design framework-combining bandgap engineering with surface state modulation—for developing robust photoelectrodes in toxic gas valorization systems.
