The accurate monitoring of pesticide residues in agricultural products is critical for maintaining food quality and human health. The development of innovative analysis techniques capable of satisfying the stringent demands of practical applications is the key to building intelligent and highly-efficient pesticide detection equipment. Here, an ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor has been reported, which utilizes quinary PtPdRhFeCu high-entropy alloy mesoporous nanotubes (PtPdRhFeCu HEA mNTs) and N/Cu dual-atom anchored ZnSe@C (N-Cu-ZnSe@C) as electrode materials. Multi-effect coupling (defect effect, high entropy effect, lattice distortion effect and doping effect), endows the proposed sensing interface with extremely high electronic conductive properties and unprecedentedly large electroactive surface area, which could heavily promote the charge transfer capability, meanwhile assists the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) with high affinity towards its substrate, thereby significantly improving the pesticide analysis performance of the sensor. Remarkably, the detection limit of this assembled biosensor for aldicarb sulfone and methamidophos detection are notably low at 2.32 fM and 4.58 fM, respectively. Moreover, this biosensor demonstrated wide detection ranges (7 pM ∼ 70 nM for methamidophos and 1 pM ∼ 0.1 μM for aldicarb sulfone), high sensitivity and specificity, along with good recovery rates (86.67 % ∼ 117.14 %) in real samples. This signal amplification strategy enhances the analysis capability by integrating multiple effects, and provides an innovative analysis tool for hazardous substance analysis in food safety and environmental monitoring research.

A very practical and competitive sensing strategy for melamine has been developed based on the efficient inner filter effect (IFE) of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the fluorescence of eco-friendly ZnSe quantum dots (QDs). The fluorescence emission of ZnSe QDs could be quenched significantly by AgNPs via IFE, which resulted in a fluorescence “off-state”. The presence of melamine could induce the aggregation of AgNPs and modulate the IFE process. Thus the IFE-decreased fluorescence could gradually recover in a melamine concentration-dependent way, thereby achieving the fluorescence “turn-on” sensing for melamine. The detection mechanism was clearly illustrated and the influences of various experimental conditions were also investigated. Under the optimal conditions, a decent linear relationship for melamine was obtained in the range from 1.0 to 36 μg L −1 , and the detection limit was as low as 0.11 μg L −1 . The IFE-based strategy was successfully applied for melamine analysis in raw milk and egg samples and satisfactory results have been achieved. Therefore, it is very promising to use this simple, rapid, sensitive and eco-friendly method for on-site and real-time screening of melamine.

Advanced bioimaging requires a uniform and large-area near-infrared (NIR) light illumination source. Achieving uniform light typically involves the use of inorganic near-infrared light-emitting diodes (NIR-LEDs), such as AlGaAs or GaAs, which are often complemented by additional optical components like reflectors and diffusers. However, the use of such optical components imposes limitations on their applicability and flexibility. On the other hand, Quantum dot NIR LEDs (NIR-QLEDs) offer distinct advantages for bioimaging, as they directly emit light uniformly across their entire surface, without the need for any additional optical components. However, for state-of-the-art quantum dot-based NIR LEDs, the previous NIR-QLEDs have suffered from suboptimal charge transport and rapid degradation, limiting their radiance and EQE. This work addresses these limitations by demonstrating an industrial-friendly, all-solution processing technique for NIR-QLED device fabrication with significantly enhanced radiance and efficiency by utilizing copper (Cu) doped InP/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs). Cu-doping in InP/ZnSe QDs generates localized intra-gap states, enhancing carrier trapping and radiative recombination while suppressing non-radiative pathways, leading to unprecedented NIR peak emission at 924 nm and a narrow full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 81 nm. These intra-gap states facilitate pure NIR emission, thereby substantially enhancing the device's efficiency. Based on the energy levels of the doped InP/ZnSe quantum dots (QDs), ZnMgO and WO₃ are employed as the electron transport layer (ETL) and hole transport layer (HTL), respectively. ZnMgO and WO₃ provide favorable conduction and valence band offsets, ensuring efficient carrier injection while suppressing leakage currents. The NIR-QLED exhibited an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of approximately 16 %. With a high current density of 250 × 10⁻³ A cm⁻², the radiance improved to 62 W sr⁻¹ m⁻². The all-solution processing technique employed in this work enabled the fabrication of a large emission area measuring 35 mm × 35 mm. Under illumination from this NIR-QLED, subcutaneous deep vein images were clearly observable. Consequently, this all-solution process not only simplifies the production process but also facilitates scalability, paving the robust route for the development of larger-area devices tailored for complex bioimaging applications.

A fluorescent biosensor was synthesized for sensitive detection of lead ions by integrating aptamer with ion imprinted polymer. ZnSe@ZnS quantum dots served as the fluorescence indicator and aptamers served as recognition elements. Specific and rapid detection of lead ions was achieved through imprinting cavities containing aptamers with specific conformations. The resulting biosensor, after optimization via the multi-factor response surface methodology, can detect lead with a detection limit as low as 0.56 nmol·L −1 (the detection limit in aquatic products is 47.73 μg/kg). Furthermore, a paper-based biosensor was developed using glass cellulose paper as the carrier material for the portable and rapid determination of lead ions in aquatic products. The proposed paper-based biosensor significantly reduces the detection time from ten minutes to one minute, and the recoveries ranged from 88.06% to 107.29%, which were validated using the ICP-MS method. These findings demonstrate that the biosensor provides a sensitive and rapid method for detecting heavy metals in complex food matrices.

A highly sensitive sandwich-type magnetic immunoassay based on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection in single particle mode, with ZnSe Quantum dots (QDs) serving as model tags, was proposed. The transient signals induced by the flash of ions ( 64 Zn + ) in the plasma torch from the ionization of nanoparticles tagged on antibody were recorded in a single particle mode. The frequency of transient signals is directly related to the concentration of nanoparticle tags, and the concentration of nanoparticle tagged antibodies can be quantified by the frequency of transient signals. Amino-modified magnetic nanoparticles (AMNPs) were synthesized and conjugated with primary carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibody to extract the target biomarker. ZnSe QDs were synthesized as a probe to determine CEA by ICP-MS. A detection limit of 0.006 ng mL −1 was obtained for CEA after immunoreactions, and a wide linear range of 0.02–100 ng mL −1 with the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 4.4%. The method was successfully applied to human serum samples.

The emission linewidth of quantum dots (QDs) is one of the important optical properties, which is essential for the applications of QD lasers, high-quality displays, and biological imaging. However, we know less about controlling emission linewidth and its underlying mechanisms. Here we introduce a wurtzite ZnSe shell onto a wurtzite CdSe core to produce asymmetric strain due to their large, anisotropic lattice mismatch. Such asymmetric pressure induces significant splitting (Δ AB ) between heavy-hole (hh) and light-hole (lh) in valence band (VB). We show that the emission intensity from the lh state (E lh ) is significantly suppressed with the increasing Δ AB caused by the strong asymmetric strain. We demonstrate that the exciton-phonon coupling (EPC) is greatly inhibited under the anisotropic lattice strain. The alloying process between the core and shell occurs under the strong lattice strain and raises the longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon energy (E LO ). Higher LO phonon energy declines LO phonon occupation numbers (N LO ) and synergistically reduces the EPC. The asymmetrically strained alloy QDs ensemble exhibits highly bright emission with ultra-narrow linewidths of 13.8 nm (∼520 nm) and 15.8 nm (∼620 nm). This concept of band structure regulation via asymmetric strain can provide a new platform for high-quality QDs beyond the currently achieved.

A new method for simultaneously determining cytokeratin fragment antigen 21–1 (CYFRA21-1), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and carbohydrate antigen (CA15–3) was developed using single-particle, ICP-MS-based, magnetic immunoassay . Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), ZnSe quantum dots (QDs), and Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were employed to tag antibodies. A highly efficient capture of CYFRA21-1, CEA, and CA15–3 was achieved using biotinylated, antibody-coated magnetic beads. AuNPs/ZnSe QDs/AgNPs-tagged second antibodies helped realize sensitive quantification of the target antigen using single particle ICP-MS. Under optimum conditions, CYFRA21-1, CEA, and CA15–3 linear concentration ranges were 0.05–50 ng mL −1 , 0.02–100 ng mL −1 , and 0.6–250 mU mL −1 . The correlation coefficients were 0.9999, 0.9987, and 0.9970, respectively. CYFRA21-1, CEA, and CA15–3 detection limits were 0.02 ng mL −1 , 0.006 ng mL −1 , and 0.25 mU mL −1 , respectively. Relative standard deviations (RSD) for CYFRA21-1, CEA, and CA15–3 were 3.2%, 4.4%, and 4.2%, respectively. The method simultaneously detected CYFRA21-1, CEA, and CA15–3 in human lung cancer serum samples with recoveries of between 89.8% and 101%.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor coupled with a Z‑scheme was developed to realize quantitative determination of 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) at a concentration of sub-picogram per liter. The PEC aptasensor was fabricated by immobilizing ZnSe/Ag 2 Se on indium-tin oxide (ITO) that could covalently bind sulfurized aptamer. Meanwhile, complementary DNA-functionalized CdTe units were used as the sensitizers, and these were immobilized on the aptamer to form Z‑scheme dual-photosystem (PS). The Z‑scheme PS based on both ZnSe/Ag 2 Se and CdTe would be provided with better photocatalytic activity than conventional heterojunctions , and improving the photo-to-current conversion efficiency without biased voltage. Following the process of hatching, PCB77 was captured via the aptamer on the PEC aptasensor, producing aptamer–PCB77 complexes with weak conductive performance. Using the photocurrent change as a response signal for the quantitative detection of PCB77, the detection limits of the proposed method were 0.05 pg L –1 and 0.22 ng L –1 for the linear ranges of 0.01–500 pg L –1 and 0.5–10 5 ng L –1 , respectively. Compared with other technologies, the PEC aptasensor is more flexible, sensitive, specific and rapid in the absence of biased voltage under visble light. The results presented herein can potentially help build a model for the detection of various polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) with stable chemical properties and insulation performances that can be used to study persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in marine organisms and in the analysis of environmental conditions.

Chiral semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) represent a promising class of materials for various applications, including biological sensing, photonics, and spin-polarized devices. However, the comprehension of the mechanisms underlying ligand-induced chiroptical effects in NCs has been limited by the constraints of current theoretical and experimental models, particularly those involving simple spherical NCs. In this study, we examined the relationship between optical activity and band structures in core–shell dot-in-rod NCs, specifically CdSe@CdS, ZnSe/CdS@CdS, and ZnSeTe/CdS@CdS dot-in-rod NCs, which were functionalized with chiral ligands. By manipulating the wave function distribution of electrons and holes within the dot-in-rod NCs, we demonstrated through circular dichroism (CD) measurements that a reduction in the number of holes within the synthesized dot-in-rod NCs correlates with a decrease in the g factor. This conclusion was corroborated by theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the fabrication of chiral CdS-Au heterojunctions and the application of electron quenchers revealed that the reduction of the g factor also suggests the significant role of electrons in the generation of chirality. Our findings not only enhance the understanding of the fundamental origins of induced chirality effects in semiconductor NCs but also provide a clear methodology for the design of optimal optically active chiral NCs, thereby paving the way for future applications utilizing chiroptical materials.
