Synthesis of SrAl2O4: Eu, DY @ polymer composite membrane using eugenol as a cross-linking agent to minimize nanoparticle agglomeration

Chen Yurong,Zhan Xue,Hong Shuo,Yuan Dehui,Liang Jiaming,Li Wenyu,Wang Zefeng

Long afterglow nanoparticles, a type of luminescence material, may gradually release stored light energy even after the excitation light has stopped. The modification of polymer membranes by introducing long afterglow nanoparticles via an inorganic particle mixtures, broaden their uses in biomedicine field. In this study, a new membrane modification approach was employed to reduce the loss of physical–mechanical performance, caused by inherent strontium aluminate inorganic particle aggregation. Moreover, eugenol, a cross-linking agent, was used to interact with acrylate monomers to form locally cross-linked compounds using an ex situ approach that improves strontium aluminate particle dispersion. Furthermore, the soap-free emulsion polymerization method used, regulates the degree of cross-linking in the membrane, hence addressing nanoparticles agglomeration. Results showed that the cross-linked structure of the membrane produced improves the heat stability and the hydrophobicity of the material produced while also increasing the nanoparticles dispersion as evidenced by the XRD study. Nevertheless, membranes with cross-linking agents outperformed in water droplet trials by not breaking or whitening the droplets. Furthermore, the generated membranes exhibit high antibacterial activity, making them attractive for paramedical applications such as protective membranes applied on the top of the skin or on the surface areas of sensors, microneedles and metal fasteners.

Integrated study on the role of solvent, catalyst and reactant in the hydrodeoxygenation of eugenol over nickel-based catalysts

Jingbo Qi,Xianyong Sun,Si-Fu Tang,Yuanyuan Sun,Chen Xu,Xiaoyu Li,Xuebing Li

The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenols to hydrocarbons is a very promising technique process for the lignin valorization. To reveal the role of reactant, solvent and catalyst, the HDO experiments of eugenol to hydrocarbons were carried out at 523   K under 3   MPa H 2 over Ni catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC) and MFI-type zeolites in polar water and nonpolar n-hexane, respectively. It was found that Ni/AC was more efficient for the HDO of eugenol in water than in n-hexane, but Ni/HZSM-5 was just the opposite. The respective roles of Brønsted acid sites and Lewis acid sites on supports were also investigated by employing NaZSM-5, HZSM-5 and silicalite-1 as supports. It was revealed that Brønsted acid showed superior advantages (TOF: 37.9   h −1 to 11.1   h −1 ) over Lewis acid in the dehydration of 4-propyl-cyclohexanol. Oxygen-containing functional groups could be removed from the aromatic ring completely over Ni/HZSM-5 in n-hexane.

Nobiletin enhances the antifungal activity of eugenol nanoemulsion against Penicillium italicum in both in vitro and in vivo settings

Yanchi Liu,Lintao Zhao,Hongyang Chen,Zimao Ye,Long Guo,Zhiqin Zhou

The study prepared and used eugenol nanoemulsion loaded with nobiletin as fungistat to study its antifungal activity and potential mechanism of Penicillium italicum (P. italicum) . The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of eugenol nanoemulsion loaded with nobiletin (EGN) was lower than that of pure eugenol nanoemulsion (EG), which were 160 μg/mL and 320 μg/mL, respectively. At the same time, the mycelial growth inhibition rate of EGN nanoemulsion (54.68 %) was also higher than that of EG nanoemulsion (9.92 %). This indicates that EGN nanoemulsion is more effective than EG nanoemulsion. Compared with EG nanoemulsion, the treatment of EGN nanoemulsion caused more serious damage to the cell structure of P. italicum . At the same time, in vitro inoculation experiments found that EGN nanoemulsion has better control and delay the growth and reproduction of P. italicum in citrus fruits. And the results reflected that EGN nanoemulsion may be considered as potential resouces of natural antiseptic to inhibit blue mold disease of citrus fruits, because it has good antifungal activity.

Sustainable eugenol release from cationic nanoparticles via accelerated hydrolysis of the biodegradable, fouling-release polysiloxane-polycaprolactone based antifouling coatings

Xinyao Wang,Changlu Gao,Xiuhua Sun

Eco-friendly antifouling coatings based on biodegradable, fouling-release polycaprolactone-polydimethyl siloxane (PCL-PDMS) materials were developed by incorporating natural antifoulant eugenol releasing nanoparticles, i.e. cationic amphiphilic poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly((dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-(4-allyl-2-methoxyphenyl 2-chloroacetate)) (PLMA-b-P(DMAEMA-AMPCA)). The synthesized nanoparticles are capable of transforming their core-shell structure in water and immediately releasing eugenol via hydrolysis. The eugenol release kinetics and the structure transformation process of the cationic nanoparticles were monitored by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, which indicated that an instant and rapid release of eugenol can be achieved. Results showed that the surface renewal rate of the fabricated marine coating was accelerated by the cationic nanoparticles. Meanwhile, a controlled and sustainable release of eugenol was attained by regulating the content of the cationic segment in the coating. Three consecutive antibacterial tests demonstrated that the cationic structure, the released eugenol, as well as the self-replenishment of PCL-PDMS materials and nanoparticles, exhibited synergistic bactericidal effect. Marine field tests showed that the developed coatings can resist the biofouling of marine microorganisms for up to 120 days. Facile fabrication of eugenol-containing polysiloxane films with good optical properties and excellent thermal stability via Si–H chemistry

Minghao Yi,Xunjun Chen,Peter S. Shuttleworth,Lewen Tan,Yunqing Ruan,Yixin Xu,Jiefeng Zheng,Shufang Wu,Sen Hu,Simin Xie,Zhixing Guan,Guoqiang Yin,Yingde Cui

Transparent and easily fabricated films were obtained through the coupling of eugenol, a bio-sourced feedstock, and poly(methylhydrosiloxane), via the Piers–Rubinsztajn reaction and Pt-catalysed hydrosilylation. The precursor reagents are readily available and economical, and the reaction process used was mild and easily undertaken. Additionally, poly(methylhydrosiloxane), having an abundant source of pendant Si–H groups, can be cross-linked with eugenol at multiple juncture points, and thus the eugenol content in these films ranges from 13.12 to 45.42 wt%. It was found that as the eugenol content increased, the thermal stability of the films also improved, with T10% and Rw at 700 °C ranging from 350.1 to 584.3 °C and 46.41 to 86.63%, respectively, which is higher than other analogous biomass-derived polysiloxanes. Crucially, the prepared films also exhibited suitable optical properties, with a >90% transmittance within the 430–1100 nm region and near 100% absorbance in the UV region (<350 nm), verifying their potential applications as optical encapsulants. Aside from good light transmittance, the refractive index of the films increased from 1.44 to 1.52 (at 450 nm) with higher ratios of eugenol. This demonstrates their suitability for use as high-refractive index (>1.5) LED encapsulants and also in stacked multi-layer reflectors. In addition, to protect the encapsulated chips from moisture erosion, these films exhibit good water vapour barrier properties and water repellence.

A fully biomass based monomer from itaconic acid and eugenol to build degradable thermosets via thiol–ene click chemistry

Yazhou Tian,Qiong Wang,Jue Cheng,Junying Zhang

Designing a fully biobased monomer to build a series of degradable thermosets is of great significance for sustainable development and environmental protection. In this work, a fully biomass based monomer (EUIT) was designed and synthesized from itaconic acid (IA) and eugenol (EU). Thiol–ene crosslinked polymers (TCPs) were prepared by changing the degree of the thiol functionality from 2 to 4 via a VOC-free thiol–ene click reaction. Also, the thermal, thermomechanical, and mechanical properties of these TCPs were investigated. The results showed that EUIT/4SH possessed the best comprehensive properties, that is, the glass-transition temperature (Tg) was up to 74.0 °C, and the mechanical properties including tensile strength and modulus were 58.6 MPa and 1.5 GPa, respectively, which were the maximum values compared with those in the reported investigations. Besides, these TCPs exhibited good degradable properties because of the inherent functional groups such as the ester groups in EUIT. Thus, this study provides a new method to prepare a fully biobased monomer and produce a series of degradable thermosets which are expected to be advanced biomedical materials, flexible electronic materials, etc.

Plasma metabonomics and proteomics studies on the anti-thrombosis mechanism of aspirin eugenol ester in rat tail thrombosis model

Ning Ma,Yajun Yang,Xiwang Liu,Shihong Li,Zhe Qin,Jianyong Li

Aspirin eugenol eater (AEE), a new drug compound, was synthesized through the combination of aspirin and eugenol. Antithrombotic effects of AEE have been confirmed in carrageenan-induced rat tail thrombosis model. However, its mechanism is unclear. With the application of integrated approach combining proteomics and metabolomics , the profilings of protein and metabolite in plasma were examined in thrombosis rat pretreated with AEE, aspirin and eugenol, respectively. A clear separation of the plasma metabolic profiles from different groups was found in score plots. 15 metabolites related with the metabolism of fatty acid, energy and amino acid were found. A total of 144, 38, 41 and 54 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) were identified in control, AEE, aspirin and eugenol group, respectively. Proteomic results showed that aspirin modulated 7 proteins in amino acid metabolism and 4 proteins in complement system; eugenol regulated the 8 proteins related with coagulation cascades and fibrinogen ; AEE improved 3 proteins in TCA cycle and 3 in lipid metabolism. Integrated analysis suggested that AEE improved fatty acid, energy and lipid metabolism to against thrombosis. Results of this study indicated AEE had different action mechanism on thrombosis from aspirin and eugenol, and contribute to understanding the mechanisms of AEE on thrombosis. Significance Thrombosis is a threat to human health, and there is an urgent need for new drug. In this study, compared with the model group, plasma metabolic profiles in AEE-treated rats were clearly separated; 15 metabolites and 38 proteins were picked out. These metabolites and proteins may assist in understanding the action mechanism of AEE on thrombosis. The results of plasma metabonomics and proteomics also revealed the different action mechanism among AEE, aspirin and eugenol on thrombosis. This study established the foundation to further evaluate the druggability of AEE on thrombosis treatment.

A phosphorus/silicon-containing flame retardant based on eugenol for improving flame retardancy and smoke suppression of epoxy resin

Xiaohan Li,Qiunan Xie,Jieying Lin,Jiateng Huang,Kaili Xie,Jingcheng Liu,Xiaojie Li,Wei Wei

Epoxy resin (EP) has excellent comprehensive properties, but its inherent flammability limits its further application in high-end industries. The present study focuses on the preparation of an efficient phosphorus/silicon-containing flame retardant for improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of EP. The intermediate product ED was first obtained by the addition reaction of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) with eugenol, and then the target flame retardant DPSi-ED was synthesized by the Williamson etherification reaction between ED and dichlorodiphenylsilane. The flame retardant was further incorporated into EP/4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) system to prepare the modified epoxy thermosets. The flame-retardant performance and mechanism were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical combustion test, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis-infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR), and so forth. At the same phosphorus content (0.5 wt%), EP/DPSi-ED thermosets exhibited superior flame-retardant properties to EP/ED thermosets. Moreover, EP/DPSi-ED7 achieved a LOI of 35.3% and V-0 rating in UL-94 testing, and compared to EP/ED7, its peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 31.5% and 10.9%, respectively. The phosphorus and silicon elements synergistically contributed to the formation of a stable char layer, which acted as a physical barrier to effectively enhance the flame-retardant properties of the thermosets. Meanwhile, the incorporation of DPSi-ED containing flexible Si  O bonds and rigid DOPO groups to some extent also improved the mechanical properties of the cured EP. Hence, this study provides an effective strategy for the preparation of bio-based phosphorus/silica-containing high-efficiency and smoke-suppressing flame retardants.

The selective encapsulation and stabilization of cinnamaldehyde and eugenol in high internal phase Pickering emulsions: Regulating the interfacial properties

Tingting Feng,Xinshuo Wang,Chunli Fan,Xuejiao Wang,Xingwei Wang,Heping Cui,Shuqin Xia,Qingrong Huang

This work aimed to investigate the encapsulation and stabilization mechanism of cinnamaldehyde and eugenol in high internal phase Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs) through regulating their interfacial rheological properties and interfacial microstructure. With the incorporation of cinnamaldehyde, the Schiff base reaction between the cinnamaldehyde and proteins favored the formation of the predominantly elastic and solid-like interfacial layers. In contrast, the hydrogen bonds between eugenol and proteins resulted in the transformation of interfacial layers to viscous dominant with weak viscoelastic responses. Thus, cinnamaldehyde-loaded HIPPEs had a better storage stability than eugenol-loaded HIPPEs, and the retention rate was increased by about 15 %∼20 %. The addition of tea camellia seed oil inhibited the mobility of immobilized water and improved the retention rates of cinnamaldehyde and eugenol by approximately 6 % and 12 % (30 days at 25 °C), respectively. These findings will be beneficial for the development and design of effective essential oil encapsulation systems in the food industry.

Branched plasticizers derived from eugenol via green polymerization for low/non-migration and externally/internally plasticized polyvinyl chloride materials

Yun Hu,Jing Zhou,Yufeng Ma,Yu Bei,Feilong Hu,Zhimin Kou,Yonghong Zhou,Puyou Jia

The synthesis of nontoxic plasticizers derived from the waste residues of the rosin-processing industry can reduce pollution and promote the high-value utilization of the waste residues of rosin. In this study, four kinds of sustainable branched plasticizers derived from a biomass resource, eugenol (derived from the waste residues of the rosin processing industry), were synthesized via one-pot solvent free polymerization and used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Internally plasticized PVC was fabricated using thiolated DPE (branched plasticizers based on eugenol). The thermal stability, tensile properties, microstructure, volatility behavior, and solvent extraction resistance of plasticized PVC were investigated. Compared with the behavior of the commercial plasticizer dioctyl phthalate, the thermal stability, plasticizing efficiency, and migration resistance of the branched plasticizers are superior. The acute oral toxicity dose of each branched plasticizer was extremely high at 5000 mg/kg of body weight, with no deaths among test animals. Compared with externally plasticized PVC, the internally plasticized PVC showed zero weight loss in volatility and leaching tests despite its less effective plasticization. All the branched plasticizers have potential application in plastic products.

Eugenol alleviated nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in rat via a gut-brain-liver axis involving glucagon-like Peptide-1

Hongzeng Li,Wen Yuan,Yuxin Tian,Feiyue Tian,Yunfei Wang,Xiangrong Sun,Yanling Gong

Eugenol, an active ingredient of many medicinal aromatic plants, has been proved to have the hypolipidemic effect, but its potential mechanism of action is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether eugenol regulates liver lipid accumulation in high-fat diet (HFD) induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) rats via the gut-brain-liver axis involving glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Hepatic vagotomy was performed in NAFLD rats to determine the role of eugenol in regulating hepatic lipid accumulation via vagus nerve. The results showed that after eight weeks of eugenol administration in NAFLD rats, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and hepatic TG decreased. However, eugenol showed no significant effect on the increased food intakes and weight gain caused by the HFD. Eugenol promoted the secretion of GLP-1 into the blood, increased GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) expression in the duodenum , liver, arcuate nucleus (ARC) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN), increased c-fos expression in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS), and promoted ZO-1 and occludin expression in duodenum. Furthermore, steatosis and lipid accumulation were significantly alleviated. Hepatic vagotomy partially attenuated the improvement of eugenol in hepatic lipid accumulation in NAFLD rats. In conclusion, eugenol regulates hepatic lipid metabolism via a gut-brain-liver axis involving in GLP-1, providing a new strategy for the treatment of NAFLD.

Aspirin eugenol ester inhibits agonist-induced platelet aggregation in vitro by regulating PI3K/Akt, MAPK and Sirt 1/CD40L pathways

Dong-Shuai Shen,Ya-Jun Yang,Xiao-Jun Kong,Ning Ma,Xi-Wang Liu,Shi-Hong Li,Zeng-Hua Jiao,Zhe Qin,Mei-Zhou Huang,Jian-Yong Li

Aspirin eugenol ester (AEE) was a promising drug candidate for treating inflammation, pain and fever and preventing cardiovascular diseases with fewer side effects than its precursors. Previous researches indicated that AEE could markedly inhibit agonist-induced platelet aggregation in vitro and ex vivo , however, the anti-platelet aggregation mechanisms of AEE remain to be defined. Here, AEE in vitro effects on agonist-induced granule-secretion, intercellular Ca 2+ mobilization and thromboxane A 2 (TXA 2 ) generation were examined. Vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Akt, Sirt 1 and CD40L expressions were also studied. In agonist-activated platelets in vitro , AEE markedly attenuated granule secretion markers (P-selectin expression and ATP release), intercellular Ca 2+ mobilization and thromboxane B 2 (TXB 2 ) formation. AEE also attenuated CD40L activation, suppressed extracellular-signal-regulated protein kinase 2 (ERK2), c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) and Akt phosphorylation, and recovered Sirt1 expression, but the activation of p38, VASP Ser157 and VASP Ser239 , and the levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) were not affected by AEE. Overall, this study demonstrates that AEE inhibits agonist-induced platelet aggregation in vitro by regulating PI3K/Akt, MAPK and Sirt 1/CD40L pathways.
