A hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) coating of micron thickness is deposited directly on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) cathode through efficient, adjustable electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in a suspension system containing surfactant and ethanol. It is based on the mixing of h-BN with polyethyleneimine (PEI) resulting in positively charged ceramic powder making cathodic electrophoretic deposition possible. The thickness of the resulting h-BN coatings deposited on SS316L could be controlled by varying the time and the voltage of electrophoretic deposition. The deposition kinetics and mechanism have been discussed. After soaking in Al(H2PO4)3solution and high-temperature annealing, the h-BN coatings exhibited good adhesive strength. Furthermore, a novel method has been used for the evaluation of the adhesive strength to explore the appropriate experimental conditions. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the h-BN coatings. The h-BN coatings are applied for the DC breakdown performance test and exhibit remarkable breakdown voltage and breakdown strength. Keywords:electrophoretic deposition;hexagonal boron nitride;coating;aluminum dihydrogen phosphate;electrical insulation

Graphical A 2D/2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and nitride doped molybdenum disulfide (N−MoS 2 ) heterostructure (h-BN/N−MoS 2 ) catalyst was prepared by sonication using a solvothermal method. The catalyst breaks down H 2 O 2 to produce hydroxyl radical and further oxidizes the colorless TMB to produce blue oxTMB. Recently, nanozymes have attracted extensive attention because of their advantages of combining nanomaterials with enzymes. Herein, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and nitride-doped molybdenum disulfide (N−MoS 2 ) nano-composites (h-BN/N−MoS 2 ) were synthesized by facile and cost-effective liquid exfoliation with a solvothermal method in nontoxic ethanol solution. The results show that h-BN, as a co-catalyst, can not only dope into the lattice of MoS 2 but also form a heterogeneous structure with MoS 2 NSs. It expanded the layer spacing and specific surface area of MoS 2 NSs, which was beneficial to the contact between the catalyst and the substrate, and resulted in a synergistic enhancement of the catalytic activity of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) with MoS 2 . A colorimetric determination platform of h-BN/N−MoS 2 -TMB-H 2 O 2 was constructed. It exhibited a wide linear range of 1–1000 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.4 μM under optimal conditions, high sensitivity and stability, as well as good reliability (99.4–110.0%) in practice, making the measurement system more widely applicable.1. This study aims to investigate the effect of the modification strategy of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the interfacial heat transfer behavior of the composite. Dual modification of h-BN, including covalent and non-covalent modifications, was achieved by combining 6-aminohexanoic acid (ACA)-assisted wet ball milling and tannic acid (TA) surface deposition. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that the interfacial thermal resistance of the covalently modified and the non-covalently modified regions of the composite system is reduced by 19.7 % and 40.9 %, respectively, and the interfacial thermal conductivity is increased by 24.5 % and 88.0 %, respectively. Meanwhile, thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated a 9 °C and 23.7 °C increase in the maximum weight loss temperature of the dual-modified composites compared to that of the two single-modified composites. The synergistic mechanism of the dual modification strategy in improving the interfacial interaction and enhancing the phonon vibration power spectrum of the composites is revealed by MD simulations. This study contributes to a deep understanding of the thermal conductivity mechanism of filled thermal interface materials. It guides the design of modified filler-filled high thermal conductivity rubber-based composites.

Oil/water emulsion separation in harsh environments remains a big challenge. Herein, a double layered nanofibrous composite membrane was developed by assembly of polydopamine-modified hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN-PDA) onto a poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) nanofibrous mat. Owing to the synergistic effect of a h-BN-PDA skin layer and a PEN nanofibrous mat supporting layer, as-prepared composite membrane exhibited high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property. Consequently, the PEN composite membrane showed good antifouling performance and a high rejection ratio (>99.0%) for various oil/water emulsions. After 10 cycles, the separation flux of PEN composite membrane still reached 588.1 L/m 2 h under the operating pressure of 0.04 MPa. Furthermore, the PEN composite membrane could still achieve high separation efficiency and high flux in high-temperature (65 °C) and strongly corrosive conditions (pH = 1-13). Therefore, the stable and efficient h-BN-PDA/PEN composite membrane showed potential application for treating oily wastewater in harsh environments.

Two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has attracted great interest due to its excellent chemical and thermal stability, electrical insulating property, high proton conductivity, and good flexibility. Integration of 2D h-BN into commercial proton exchange membranes (PEMs) has the potential to improve ion selectivity while maintaining the proton conductivity of PEMs simultaneously, which has been a longstanding challenge in membrane separation technology. Until now, such attempts are only limited in mechanically exfoliated small area h-BN and in proof-of-concept devices, due to the difficulty of growing and transferring large area uniform h-BN monolayers. Here, we develop a space-confined chemical vapor deposition approach and achieve the growth of wafer-scale uniform h-BN monolayer films on Cu rolls. We further develop a Nafion functional layer assisted transfer method which effectively transfers as-grown h-BN monolayer films from the Cu roll to sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane. The as-fabricated Nafion/h-BN/SPEEK sandwich structure is used as the membrane and compared with the pure SPEEK membrane for flow batteries. Results show that the sandwich membrane exhibits ion selectivity 3-fold greater than that of a pure SPEEK membrane (i.e., 32.1 × 104vs 9.7 × 104 S min cm–3). In addition, we fabricate vanadium flow batteries using the Nafion/h-BN/SPEEK sandwich membrane and find that the sandwich structure does not affect the proton transport but inhibits vanadium crossover at low current density (<120 mA cm–2) due to the selective blocking of vanadium ions by 2D h-BN. As a result, the sandwich membrane exhibits a significantly improved Coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency, ∼95% and ∼91%, respectively. Our results suggest that a functional layer/2D film/target substrate-based sandwich structure shows clear potential for future 2D material-based membranes in separation technologies.

Polyimide (PI)-based tribological composites containing carbon fiber (CF), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and other solid lubricants have been extensively studied. However, the role of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in regulating interfacial interactions and wear mechanisms in PI/CF/MoS 2 systems remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the effects of h-BN incorporation on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PI/CF/MoS 2 composites were systematically investigated through experimental characterization combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that h-BN addition improved hardness while reducing tensile strength and ductility due to the enhanced interfacial restriction and increased stress concentration. The tribological performance exhibited a non-monotonic dependence on h-BN content, with the optimal performance achieved at 5 wt.% h-BN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses suggested that an appropriate h-BN content facilitated the formation of a relatively continuous transfer film, whereas excessive h-BN promoted filler agglomeration and interfacial degradation, leading to accelerated wear. Furthermore, MD simulations suggested that the reduced molecular mobility and fractional free volume at the optimal h-BN content were consistent with enhanced interfacial stability. The combined experimental and simulation results provide qualitative insights into the role of h-BN in regulating filler dispersion, interfacial interactions, and molecular chain dynamics. These findings establish a structure–property relationship for designing high-performance multi-filler PI-based tribological composites. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride improves the hardness but reduces tensile strength. Friction and wear are minimized at 5 wt.% hexagonal boron nitride loading. Excess hexagonal boron nitride triggers agglomeration and abrasive wear. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate experimental wear mechanisms.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites possess outstanding specific stiffness and strength but typically exhibit low intrinsic damping, which limits vibration attenuation in lightweight dynamic structures. Herein, a hybrid toughening strategy combining carboxyl-terminated butadiene nitrile rubber (CTBN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is developed to enhance the damping of CFRP laminates while preserving cure feasibility and thermomechanical stability. An E51/DICY/accelerator epoxy system (100:6.5:1.2, mass ratio) is used as the baseline matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that both CTBN and h-BN shift the cure peak temperature upward (Tp: 160.6 → 170.3 °C) and reduce the reaction enthalpy (ΔH:386.5 → 255.1 J/g), indicating dilution/transport effects and altered cure kinetics. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that CTBN exhibits an optimum damping enhancement at 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.300), whereas h-BN provides a stronger monotonic increase up to 25 phr (tan δ_max= 0.437). Notably, the CTBN/h-BN hybrid (25/25 phr) delivers a hightan δ_maxof 0.468 together with the broadest effective damping window (ΔT_half= 28.6 °C), exceeding 85% of the linear additivity criterion proposed herein. When the materials are transferred into CFRP laminates, free-vibration tests (using the logarithmic decrement method) demonstrate a clear structural damping improvement (ζ:0.021 → 0.035;δ:0.132 → 0.221; t1/2: 0.48 → 0.27 s). Overall, the results suggest that the damping enhancement arises from a combination of EPBN-mediated ductile energy dissipation and h-BN-related interfacial/interlayer frictional losses, which can be jointly tuned to balance processability, thermal response, and damping performance in CFRPs.

Considering the requirement of environmental and bio-friendliness of flame retardants, there is an urgent need to develop efficient flame retardants based on low-toxicity raw materials. Herein, a nano-fold structure DBN@CoMo-LDH was successfully synthesized by combining layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), through a sacrificial template approach involving ion-exchange interaction at atmospheric pressure. Thanks to the better compatibility and strong interfacial interactions of hybrids in matrix, epoxy resin (EP) composites can exhibit superior flame retardancy and smoke suppression without loss of mechanical properties. The enhancement and mechanism of fire safety of EP composites were investigated through cone calorimetric test, condensed-phase residue analysis, and gas-phase product analysis. Compared to EP, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), peak smoke production rate (pSPR), total smoke production (TSP), carbon monoxide production rate (COP) and carbon dioxide production rate (CO 2 P) of EP/4DBN@CoMo-LDH were reduced by 37.77 %, 62.96 %, 50.45 %, 45.71 % and 40.98 %, respectively. DBN@CoMo-LDH not only promoted the rapid generation of a dense carbon layer, but also effectively suppressed the release of gas phase products. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent antimicrobial properties against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . Moreover, the unique nano-fold structure can provide a good thermal conduction path in the matrix, improving the thermal conductivity of EP. This study offers a feasible approach for designing high-performance flame retardants, and suggests their potential application in multifunctional EP composites.

In order to solve the problem of poor thermal conductivity of polymer-based radiation shielding composite materials, h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 hybrid powders were prepared by combining h-BN with high thermal conductivity and PbWO 4 with γ shielding. With the assistance of polydopamine, PbWO 4 particles were synthesized in situ on the h-BN surface. The effects of h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 on thermal conductivity, γ-ray shielding, and mechanical properties of chloroprene rubber were studied. The results showed that the hybrid particles had better dispersibility than the pure mixing of h-BN and PbWO 4 in chloroprene rubber and significantly improved the thermal conductivity gamma-ray shielding performance and mechanical properties of CR composites. When the filler content of the hybrid powder reaches 40 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the composite is about 3.16 times that of the pure CR. The γ shielding rates at 86.5 KeV and 105.3 KeV photon energies increase by 14.14% and 17.61% compared with the pure CR. Compared with pure CR, the tensile strength of the composites increased by 4.79 MPa, and the elongation at break decreased slightly. These were because h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 shows had an excellent synergistic effect in CR substrate. The new kind of CR/h-BN@PDA@PbWO 4 composite can be used for thermal management and gamma shielding.

Hexagonal boron nitride/silicon carbide (h-BN/SiC) ceramics were fabricated by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Phase and microstructure of ceramics were characterized and observed, respectively, using the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalysis. The effect of molar ratios of SiC toh-BN on the microstructure, relative density, hardness, thermal conductivity, and the heating rate by microwaves on the ceramics were investigated. The results showed that the orientation of flake-likeh-BN was significantly influenced by SiC content inh-BN/SiC ceramics. With the increasing of SiC content, theh-BN flakes gradually became an isotropic distribution from the preferred orientation aligning in a SPS pressure direction. The relative density ofh-BN/SiC ceramics was 97.6 ± 0.9% at a molar ratio of SiC toh-BN of 40/60 mol%. The preferential orientation ofh-BN flakes contributed to a relatively high thermal conductivity along the SPS pressure direction, which was beneficial to increasing the heating rate ofh-BN/SiC ceramics in microwave fields.

h-BN is a two-dimensional ceramic material with a lamellar structure , known for its typical orientation characteristics on mechanical and thermal properties. By optimizing the size and arrangement of h-BN grains in the matrix, the anisotropic characteristics of h-BN ceramics can be fully utilized to obtain ceramic materials with high thermal conductivity or high strength . In order to study the effect of grain orientation distribution on the mechanical and thermal properties of materials, the index of orientation distribution (IOP) was used to quantitatively characterize the orientation degree of h-BN grains and analyzed the effect of h-BN grain size on material properties . The results show when the initial h-BN size is 13.50 μm, the ceramic has the highest orientation degree/-507, and the mechanical and thermal properties show obvious anisotropy. While the related properties of BN-YAG ceramics varies significantly with the decrease of initial h-BN grain size.

To improve phase-change behavior and thermal conductivity of the PEG-based polymeric SSPCMs, a series of SSPCMs with double cross-linking networks were constructed by introducing GO and hydroxylated h-BN into the polymer molecular chains of PEG-based SSPCMs through grafted polymerization and self-assembly. GO was the main hard supporting skeleton for the PEG segment, and h-BN as 2D thermal enhanced cells continuously was linked on the GO nano-sheets, forming into double cross-linking networks with PEG segments, which has good structural stability and regularity. Thus, the SSPCMs possessed good phase-change properties, excellent thermal reliability, and high thermal conductivity. Microscopies confirmed the successfully constructed chemical structure of the SSPCMs. Energy-storage capacities of the SSPCMs could reach 149.62 J/g, which displayed no obvious change after 100 thermal cycles, suggesting a good thermal cycling stability. Moreover, thermal conductivity of the prepared SSPCMs was enhanced by 71% compared with pure PEG, showing a good heat transfer efficiency. Therefore, this study represents a creative strategy towards the development of SSPCMs for thermal energy storage and thermal management applications.
