The physical characteristics of chyme during gastrointestinal digestion are considered to significantly affect nutrient digestion and absorption (such as glucose diffusion), which has an impact on postprandial satiety. The present study aims to analyze the hydration rate (HR) and rheological properties of deacetylated konjac glucomannan (DKGM) at different degrees and then explore their effects on rice texture, digestive properties, and the subjects’ post-meal appetite. The present results show that, as the deacetylation degree (DD) of KGM increased, the intersection point of the viscoelastic modulus shifted to a high shear rate frequency, and as the swelling time of the DKGM was prolonged, its HR decreased significantly. The results of the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion tests show that the hardness and chewability of the rice in the fast-hydration group (MK1) were remarkably reduced. In contrast, the slow-hydration group (MK5) exhibited an outstanding ability to resist digestion. The kinetics of starch hydrolysis revealed that the HR of the rice in the fast-hydration group was 1.8 times faster than that of the slow-hydration group. Moreover, it was found that the subjects’ appetite after the meal was highly related to the HR of the MK. Their hunger (p< 0.001), desire to eat (p< 0.001), and prospective food consumption (p< 0.001) were significantly inhibited in the slow-hydration group (MK5) compared to the control. This study explored the nutritional effects of the hydration properties derived from the DKGM, which may contribute to modifying the high glycemic index food and provide ideas for the fabrication of food with enhanced satiating capacity.

Cement-based materials with excellent mechanical properties are in high demand in the civil engineering. This work utilized an innovative in-situ copolymerization approach for synergistic modification of cement-based materials. Vinyl hybrid silica microspheres (VSM) were synthesized through the sol-gel method. Subsequently, With the assistance of initiators and cross-linking agents, the VSM and acrylamide (AM) in-situ copolymerization and were uniformly dispersed in the cement matrix, leading to the successful development of a modified cement-based material. The copolymerization of VSM and AM resulted in the creation of a comprehensive three-dimensional hybrid network structure, interconnected by covalent bonds between the constituent components. Experimental results unequivocally demonstrate that the mechanical properties of the composite have undergone remarkable enhancement. Notably, the flexural strength experienced a substantial increase due to the in-situ polymerization of AM. Furthermore, the compressive strength was significantly improved, achieving a 21.4 % increase compared to samples modified with 2 wt% AM alone. The enhancement can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the in-situ copolymerization structure and the VSM attached to it. The microspheres not only aided in the development of a robust cement matrix and a higher compactness, but also bolstered the compressive modulus of the flexible polymer chains. Collectively, these factors contributed to an increase in the overall resistance to deformation, comprehensively enhancing the mechanical performance of the material. This study addresses the challenges posed by the loss of compressive strength during in-situ polymerization modification, introduces an innovative methodology aimed at significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of cement-based materials.

Incorporating nano-SiO2 particles into cement paste has garnered significant attention for enhancing the performance of hardened cement paste. However, the agglomeration of nanoparticles in the pore solution of cement–water system poses a challenge for cost-effective and efficient applications. Meanwhile, superplasticizers containing phosphate groups exhibit strong complexation with calcium ions and show promise in improving the dispersion performance. This study introduces a surface chemical modification technique to enhance the dispersibility of nano-SiO2. Firstly, poly(isoprenyl oxy poly(ethylene glycol) ether-random-vinylphosphonic acid) (PTPEG–VPA), a silanized superplasticizer containing phosphate moieties, is copolymerized and chemically grafted onto pristine nano-SiO2 surfaces through condensation and silanization processes. The resulting core–shell SiO2@PTPEG–VPA nanoparticles are comprehensively characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA, DLS, TEM, BET surface area analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The results indicate that introducing phosphate moieties improves the dispersion capacity of grafted copolymers, thereby reducing the severe agglomeration of nano-SiO2 in solution. Subsequently, the impact of SiO2@PTPEG–VPA on cement hydration and early-age strength development is investigated using microcalorimetry and TGA characterization. Finally, a mechanism is proposed to explain the observed retarding effects of grafted PTPEG–VPA on pristine SiO2. Overall, this study provides novel insights into the chemical design of nanoparticles, aimed at manipulating cement paste properties.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), a promising technology for managing MSWI capacity, has a large amount of CO 2 in its flue gas emissions, but lacks effective means of carbon reduction. Modification of CaO-based sorbents using fly ash, a solid waste from coal-fired power plants, is a potential application to improve CO 2 capture capacity. In this study, a cost-effective fly ash-CaO sorbent was developed by combining high-calcium and high-magnesium fly ash with CaO by hydration. The CO 2 capture capacity and carbonation conversion of fly ash-CaO sorbents were investigated at different temperatures, CO 2 partial pressures and doping ratios in a calcination/carbonation reaction system. Optimum carbonation reaction temperature (760℃) for CaO and optimum calcination temperature (850℃) for fly ash were obtained. In the experiment of CaO doped with fly ash, the novel sorbents prepared by CaO doped with fly ash at a mass ratio of 3:1 had the highest carbonation conversion (98.88 %). The hydration reaction promoted the transformation of CaO to Ca(OH) 2 , which improved the CO 2 capture capacity of the sorbents. The inert materials (Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 ) in the fly ash were uniformly distributed as structural skeleton in the sorbents, enhancing the structural stability and anti-sintering ability. The S element contained in the fly ash competes with CO 2 for adsorption sites and produces stable CaSO 4 , which reduces the carbon capture capacity of the sorbents. A unique mineralization sequestration process for MSWI carbon capture is proposed that is economical and industrially viable. A promising route to improve CO 2 capture performance with waste reutilization is emphasized.

Hydrogels, known for their unique physical and chemical properties, hold significant potential for various applications. However, the inherent conflict between achieving both high strength and toughness often results in suboptimal mechanical performance, which significantly restricts their practical use. The shell of Discinisca tenuis is a layered natural biomaterial that exhibits high strength and toughness due to slight layer loosening during hydration, inspiring the design of tough hydrogels. Inspired by this biological process, this study developed a biomimetic layered hydrogel using a layered membrane hydration approach, optimizing the structural integrity through hot pressing to mimic the slight layer loosening observed in Discinisca tenuis shells after hydration, resulting in both high strength (55.26 MPa) and high toughness (21.04 MJ/m3). The research results indicate that slight layer loosening after hydration enables the biomimetic layered hydrogel to maintain high structural integrity, facilitating effective interlayer load transfer and achieving high strength, while also reducing spatial constraints, which improves ductility and results in high toughness. Additionally, the excellent energy dissipation capacity of the layered structure gives the hydrogel outstanding impact resistance, comparable to commercial materials like foamed polyethylene, silicone, and energy-absorbing rubber, indicating broad application prospects. In summary, this research proposes a general preparation strategy for tough hydrogels based on biomimetic principles, expected to advance the field of hydrogels.

Hemimorphite, as a most common Zn–O mineral, is an important source of zinc resources. Oleic acid direct flotation method is effective to recover hemimorphite. However, strong hydration of hemimorphite leads to flotation difficulties, the mechanism of hemimorphite hydration remains unclear. In this study, two hydrated surface models were established through the adsorption of H + ions and –OH groups on hemimorphite surfaces to investigate the influence of hydration on direct flotation of hemimorphite using micro-flotation tests, zeta potential analysis, FTIR measurements and DFT calculations. Experimental results show that pH severely affects direct flotation of hemimorphite. At pH < 9, the surface adsorbs H + ions; at pH > 9, –OH groups are adsorbed on the surface, leading to a rapid decrease in zeta potential. DFT results show that H adsorption shifts Zn 4s orbitals towards the Fermi energy level and leads to hemimorphite surface layer being in an electron-deficient state, promoting the stable sp 3 hybridization of oleic acid (OA) with Zn atoms to form outer-orbital complexes. However, –OH adsorption increases the steric hindrance of Zn atoms and causes an electron-enrichment state of hemimorphite surface layer, hindering the OA-Zn interaction. The study provides new insights into the mechanism of hemimorphite hydration and helps to achieve interface regulation for direct flotation of hemimorphite.

Shale composed of a large amount of clay minerals is easy to swell and disperse in water, leading to wellbore instability. In recent years, adhesive shale stabilization materials have become a research hotspot because of their good bonding effect. However, many existing materials have problems such as high cost and incompatibility. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tannic acid (TA) have been used as raw materials to prepare a bonding-type shale stabilizer (abbreviated as PT) for water-based drilling fluids. The shale compressive strength tests, immersion tests, linear swelling tests, and shale hot-rolling recovery tests have been used to evaluate its inhibitive performance. The results showed that the shale recovery of 3 % PT solution with a PVA/TA mass ratio of 2:1 can reach more than 90.0 %, even after hot-rolled at 150°C. In addition, the bentonite soaked in PT aqueous solution had good integrity and small volume expansion at 90°C. After immersing for 5 h, the swelling height of the bentonite sample is only 2.0 mm. Meanwhile, the compressive strength of the artificial core after soaking in 3 % PT aqueous solution at 90°C for 24 h was the highest, reaching 30.19 MPa. The rheological and filtration performance evaluation showed that PT could improve the viscosity and reduce the fluid loss of bentonite dispersion, displaying good compatibility. According to microstructure analysis, it was preferred that PVA polymer with a large number of hydroxyl groups and TA small molecules containing catechol structures in PT could form a network structure through multiple hydrogen bonding interactions, showing a strong adhesive effect. Then, PT easily adsorbed on the surface of shale or clay particles, formed a dense adsorption film on the surface to block the invasion of water molecules, and even enhanced the cementation between these particles. Finally, hydration, swelling, and dispersion of clay minerals were well inhibited, and the borewell stability was enhanced.

The use of aluminum sulfate (Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 )-based alkali-free accelerators in shotcrete often impeded tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) hydration, leading to poor ultra-early strength development. To address this, a novel stage-wise kinetic control strategy was proposed to regulate the sequential formation of ettringite and C-S-H gel through the delayed addition of C-S-H nano seeds. The dosage of C-S-H nano seeds, delayed time, addition sequence of Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and C-S-H nano seeds were carefully examined in this study, and the effects of addition sequence on the hydration kinetic, hydration products, and pore structure of cement pastes were systematically investigated. Results demonstrated a significant enhancement in 6 h compressive strength, achieving a 35% increase when C-S-H nano seeds (4% dosage) were added 1 h after initial mixing compared to simultaneous addition. Hydration heat, XRD, TG, SEM, and BSE-EDS analyses revealed that the delayed addition promoted C 3 S hydration at later stages by staggering intensive ettringite formation and C-S-H gel precipitation, mitigating competition for calcium ions. This stage-wise approach facilitated C-S-H gel integration into the pre-constructed porous ettringite skeleton, refining the pore structure and enhancing ultra-early mechanical performance. These findings highlight an effective strategy to optimize hydration kinetics and strength development in shotcrete applications.

The advancement of high-performance solid-state electrolytes remains pivotal for flexible zinc-air batteries, yet poses persistent challenges in energy storage research. To address this, we introduce a zwitterion-based electrolyte membrane synthesized from 3-(1-vinyl-3-imidazolio) propanesulfonate. Extended polymer chains within this membrane confer exceptional mechanical flexibility, while abundant zwitterionic moieties establish robust hydration networks via water-molecule interactions. These structural features facilitate expansive ion-conduction channels, enabling accelerated hydroxide ion mobility with an ionic conductivity of 101.3 mS cm −1 at ambient conditions. Crucially, the system exhibits thermally responsive behavior: conductivity escalates to 127.8 mS cm −1 at 65°C. When deployed in ZABs, the membrane sustains 180 charge-discharge cycles while achieving a peak power density of 62.14 mW cm −2 . Under flexible-operation scenarios, it maintains performance stability amid mechanical stress. Further merits include inherent flame retardancy and adhesive properties, which collectively enhance operational safety and broaden application potential. This electrolyte design paradigm provides critical insights for next-generation flexible energy-storage technologies.

Polycarboxylate superplasticizer nanomicelles (nano-PCEs) with a core-shell structure were prepared via aqueous emulsion copolymerization in one pot. The shells are constructed with hydrophilic segments of poly(acrylic acid)- co -poly(isobutenyl polyethenoxy ether) (PAA- co -PHPEG), offering the water-reducing performance and stability for nano-PCEs. The cores are self-assembled with hydrophobic segments of polystyrene- co -poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PS- co -PHEA), endowing nano-PCEs with good loss resistant of fluidity for cement pastes . The chemical structure of nano-PCEs was verified by the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum ( 1 H NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the 16−48 nm diameter of nano-PCE nanomicelles was determined by dynamic laser scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Compared with comb PCEs, the cement paste containing nano-PCEs exhibited better fluidity retention of three hours by mini-slump measurements, lower hydration heat and more delayed hydration heat evolution by isothermal calorimetry tests. Furthermore, the hydrolysis and adsorption behavior of nano-PCEs in alkaline cement pastes were deduced, and a working mechanism of nano-PCEs was theoretically explained. This new type of superplasticizer nanomicelles can be used as a long time rheology modifying agent in fresh cementitious systems.

A carbon–chitosan–PVA porous foam evaporator achieves 2.47 kg m −2 h −1 with 91.1% efficiency under one sun. • Stabilized interfacial water suppresses ion dehydration and prevents surface salt crystallization. • Interconnected porous architecture enables rapid capillary-driven water supply and efficient heat localization. • Stable desalination is maintained without salt accumulation during long-term operation in saline conditions. Developing efficient, stable, and scalable solar-driven desalination systems remains a critical challenge for sustainable water treatment, particularly under high-salinity and complex wastewater conditions. Herein, a three-dimensional chitosan-based porous foam evaporator is fabricated via a facile foaming–crosslinking strategy, integrating a hydrophilic polymer network with broadband photothermal components for continuous desalination. The interconnected porous structure ensures rapid capillary-driven water supply and effective heat localization, enabling sustained vapor generation. Notably, a hydration-regulated water–ion interaction mechanism is established, in which stabilized interfacial water structures suppress ion dehydration and facilitate continuous salt back-diffusion, thereby preventing salt crystallization and maintaining a salt-free evaporation interface during long-term operation. As a result, the optimized CCA-70-2 achieves an evaporation rate of 2.47 kg·m −2 ·h −1 with an energy efficiency of 91.1% under 1 sun illumination, and maintains 2.07 kg·m −2 ·h −1 during continuous operation in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The system demonstrates robust desalination performance in seawater, dye-containing wastewater, and heavy-metal-contaminated water, producing clean condensate with effective contaminant removal, and achieves 1.27 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under outdoor conditions. This work presents a robust and scalable evaporator design for stable desalination under complex conditions and provides a low-cost pathway toward practical solar-driven water treatment systems. Hydration resistance is a critical performance indicator for MgO-CaO refractories in industrial applications. In this study, a novel anti-hydration strategy was developed through the construction of a composite organic–inorganic coating on MgO-CaO aggregates using a facile impregnation approach. The coating comprises a ZrCl 4 -derived sol, docosanoic acid (DCA, C 22 H 44 O 2 ), and nano-ZrO 2 particles. The modified aggregates exhibited super-hydrophobicity properties, with a water contact angle of 150.47°, which effectively inhibited moisture penetration. Upon heat treatment, the ZrCl 4 -derived sol decomposed and further reacted with CaO to form a dense CaZrO 3 layer, providing long-term hydration resistance. Hydration tests demonstrated exceptional stability, with a weight gain of only 0.025 % after 10 days of exposure to humid environments (at 25 °C and 85 % relative humidity). This work offers a scalable approach to enhance the durability of MgO-CaO refractories by integrating short-term hydrophobicity and long-term ceramic passivation.
