The utilization of lignin to produce high value-added chemicals is conducive to alleviating the fossil energy crisis. Herein, Ni nanoparticles supported on iron/nitrogen co-doped carbon was prepared by co-pyrolysis and solvothermal reduction method for catalytic hydrogenolysis (CH) of dealkaline lignin and its model compounds. The catalysts were prepared under different calcination temperature, N/C ratio and Ni loading, and the optimal catalyst was Ni 10% @Fe/NC 0.33 – 800 (calcination temperature: 800 °C, N/C ratio: 0.33, Ni loading: 10%) based the on the CH of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE). Ni 10% @Fe/NC 0.33 – 800 showed good catalytic performance on the selective cleavage of C-O bond of lignin and its model compounds. The BPE conversion reached up to 97.7% over Ni 10% @Fe/NC 0.33 – 800 under mild conditions (230 °C, 1 MPa H 2 , and 0.5 h) with toluene and cyclohexanol as major products. Catalyst characterizations suggest that N content affects the formation of NiFe alloy and the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe plays an important role in CH of BPE. Moreover, Ni 10% @Fe/NC 0.33 – 800 could promote the cleavage of C-O bonds in dealkaline lignin through CH and hence enhance producing aromatics such as phenols, aromatic ethers, and aromatic esters, among which phenols are the main aromatics with guaiacols predominant.

The chemical modification of lignin has been hindered by its poor solubility; therefore, expensive polar solvents are required. Herein, this article reports a solvent-free CuAAc reaction on lignin modification through ball-milled mechanochemistry, which avoids solvent use. In this way, not only is the cost reduced but also the reaction goes on the green side. In detail, the hydroxyl groups of lignin are first modified to alkyne end groups. Then, the lignin-alkyne and ethyl azidoacetate are ball-milled with a catalyst of Cu(OAc)2 in a solvent-free condition at 600 rpm. This reaction reached full conversion within 30 min on lignin model compounds of vanillin, 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, and 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol. For natural lignins, the reaction reached 89% conversion for enzymolysis lignin-alkyne and 93% conversion for dealkali lignin-alkyne within 30 min. Despite intense impact energy in the planetary ball mill, the lignin polymer structure remained intact rather than degraded through the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) study. Then, the ball mill reaction condition was optimized to a 1:1.2 lignin-alkyne to ethyl azidoacetate ratio. The reaction time was minimized to 20 min, and mill balls were optimized to 40 balls of a 3 mm diameter. Lastly, a bunch of azide compounds was reacted with enzymolysis lignin-alkyne, including benzyl azide, 4-azidobenzonic acid, and 1-(azidomethyl)pyrene. 1-(Azidomethyl)pyrene enabled lignin to become a fluorophore. A polymer example, PEG-N3, was grafted onto lignin-alkyne through this solvent-free ball-milled CuAAc. In addition, a bisazide compound, 1,8-diazido-3,6-dioxaoctane, cross-linked lignin into macroscopic flakes. Moreover, the ball mill and solvent syntheses are analyzed metrically to evaluate the green chemistry.

The pursuit of high volume and high value-added applications for lignin has been a long-term challenge. In this work, inspired by the energy sacrificial mechanism from biological materials, we developed high-performance lignin/carbon black (CB)/nitrile rubber (NBR) elastomers by constructing a dual-crosslinking network consisting of sulfur covalent bonds and dynamic coordination sacrificial bonds. Lignin was not only used for the substitution of half mass of CB in the NBR elastomer but also served as natural ligands for the Zn-based coordination bonds, providing a significant synergistic coordination enhancement effect. The mechanical performance of the elastomers can be easily manipulated by adjusting the proportion of non-permanent coordination bonds and permanent covalent bonds. Lignin/CB/NBR elastomers with a higher strength and modulus than CB-filled elastomers were obtained while maintaining excellent elasticity. The thermal stability and the high-temperature oil resistance of NBR elastomers were also improved by incorporation of lignin and metal coordination bonds. Overall, this work inspires a new solution for the design of high-performance lignin/rubber elastomers with a high lignin loading content.

Efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose in lignocellulose to glucose is one of the most critical steps for the production of biofuels. The nonproductive adsorption of lignin to expensive cellulase highly impedes the development of biorefinery. Understanding the lignin–cellulase interaction mechanism serves as a vital basis for reducing such nonproductive adsorption in their practical applications. Yet, limited report is available on the direct characterization of the lignin–cellulase interactions. Herein, for the first time, the nanomechanics of the biomacromolecules including lignin, cellulase, and cellulose were systematically investigated by using a surface force apparatus (SFA) at the nanoscale in aqueous solutions. Interestingly, a cation−π interaction was discovered and demonstrated between lignin and cellulase molecules through SFA measurements with the addition of different cations (Na+, K+, etc.). The complementary adsorption tests and theoretical calculations further confirmed the validity of the force measurement results. This finding further inspired the investigation of the interaction between lignin and other noncatalytic-hydrolysis protein (i.e., soy protein). Soy protein was demonstrated as an effective, biocompatible, and inexpensive lignin-blocker based on the molecular force measurements through the combined effects of electrostatic, cation−π, and hydrophobic interactions, which significantly improved the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiencies of cellulose in pretreated lignocellulosic substrates. Our results offer quantitative information on the fundamental understanding of the lignin–cellulase interaction mechanism. Such unraveled nanomechanics provides new insights into the development of advanced biotechnologies for addressing the nonproductive adsorption of lignin to cellulase, with great implications on improving the economics of lignocellulosic biorefinery.

Lignin is the most abundant renewable resource composed of aromatic moieties in nature. The highlight aromatic characteristics of lignin renders it a sustainable feedstock for aromatic chemicals and naphthene fuels. Tungsten is a typical rare metal for the synthesis of non-noble metal catalysts which show potential in catalyzing lignin depolymerization/valorization. This review highlights the latest advances in the application of tungsten-based catalysts for the transformation of lignin into value-added chemicals and fuels. We focus on the synthesis and application of tungsten carbides , tungsten sulfide, tungsten phosphide, tungsten acids, and tungsten-based bimetallic catalysts on lignin conversion. Among them, tungsten carbides are extensively summarized. Perspectives for the future investigation on the lignin depolymerization are also presented.

The development of sustainable and efficient adsorbent materials for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) removal is of great importance for wastewater treatment. Structural characterizations (XRD and FTIR) confirmed successful lignin carbonization and the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups, while N2physisorption revealed a phosphoric acid-induced hierarchical porous structure rich in mesopores to facilitate mass transfer. CL exhibited excellent tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) adsorption, achieving a maximum capacity of 21.06 mg g−1within 2 h. The adsorption data closely followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a predominantly chemisorption process. While nanocellulose enabled the fabrication of flexible, self-supporting films with well-dispersed CL, excessive loading deteriorated film integrity. An optimized 30 wt% CL content achieved the ideal balance between structural stability and adsorption performance, demonstrating that these sustainable films hold great potential for aquatic antibiotic remediation.

Abstract The cleavage of recalcitrant methylene linkages in technical lignin is critical for its valorization but remains inefficient due to poor mass transfer in microporous catalysts. Here, we report a simple alkaline desilication treatment of commercial Hβ zeolite that creates open mesopores without compromising acidity. The resulting hierarchical catalyst enhances oligomer diffusion, boosting the yield of monomeric and dimeric phenolics from the depolymerization of five technical lignin oligomers to 9.8–25.2 wt %, which is a 1.9- to 2.7-fold increase relative to conventional hydrogenolysis that only cleaves C–O bonds. Complete hydrodeoxygenation of these phenolics yields a mixture of mono- and bicyclic cycloalkanes with a carbon-number (C9–C20) distribution overlapping that of Jet-A fuel, highlighting their potential as drop-in blending components for sustainable aviation fuel. This work provides a scalable, cost-effective, and green catalytic route that directly addresses the mass-transfer bottleneck in technical lignin depolymerization.

Lignin, a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, holds significant potential as a renewable feedstock for advanced biofuel production. However, the bio-oil derived from lignin often suffers from poor thermal stability, limiting its direct application as a fuel. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an essential upgrading process that selectively removes oxygen from lignin-derived bio-oil, converting it into high-quality hydrocarbon fuels. This study investigates the continuous HDO of representative phenolic compounds (phenol and 4-ethylphenol) using a Ni/h-BN catalyst for cycloalkane production in a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of various operational parameters on product distribution and catalyst stability were systematically evaluated. Under optimized conditions, a phenol conversion of 87.6% with 86.6% selectivity to cyclohexane was achieved. Similarly, 4-ethylphenol exhibited a conversion of 78% and 75.2% selectivity to ethylcyclohexane. In a co-feeding experiment, the conversion of phenol and 4-ethylphenol reached 78.1% and 76.2%, with cyclohexane and ethylcyclohexane selectivities of 84% and 81%, respectively. Notably, the catalyst demonstrated stable performance over 8 h of continuous operation, maintaining conversions above 75% and cycloalkane selectivities exceeding 81%. The product distribution containing both aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes, indicates that the direct deoxygenation pathway predominated under the evaluated conditions.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) is a strong oxidative free radical. Under its oxidative action, lignin was effectively degraded at temperatures between 50 and 80 °C. However, excessively high temperatures can lead to energy waste and enhance chlorination by-reactions, resulting in the formation of harmful substances. Therefore, this study constructed a high-concentration chlorine dioxide oxidation method, whereby lignin in pulp was effectively removed at room temperature (25 °C). Through efficient recycling of chlorine dioxide, the remaining ClO 2 does not increase costs, and the physicochemical properties of the pulp before and after treatment indicate that high concentrations of ClO 2 at room temperature do not damage the fibers. Using a ball-milling device, a nanocellulose membrane with good air permeability was prepared. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the reaction between lignin molecules and ClO 2 molecules is primarily guided by van der Waals interactions, with a lesser contribution from electrostatic forces. This finding provides a novel method for fiber purification at room temperature and proposes a feasible approach for the valorization of cellulose.

Wood, a renewable and eco-friendly resource, holds significant potential for developing sustainable structural materials. Nevertheless, in advanced engineering applications, natural wood often fails to meet requirements for mechanical performance and flame retardancy. Herein, we present a novel, simple yet highly effective strategy to fabricate tough flame-retardant wood (TF-wood). This approach involves partial delignification using alcohol-amine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs), followed by N/P-functionalization of the dissolved lignin that is reincorporated into the wood matrix with subsequent hot-pressing. With the incorporation of 20% functionalized lignin, the resulting TF-wood demonstrates a remarkable increase in tensile strength (425.2 MPa), strain (2.9%), and the corresponding toughness reaching 8.1 MJ/m³, 27 times higher than that of natural wood. Additionally, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) of the TF-wood is reduced by 58.3%, and the total heat release (THR) is decreased by 47.8%. Crucially, TF-wood exhibits an ultralow water migration rate, further enhancing its structural stability in humid environments. These combined properties render TF-wood highly attractive for structural applications requiring enhanced fire safety and durability. This study paves the way for designing sustainable, high-performance building materials that integrate multiple functionalities.

Lignin is a natural product that holds significant potential in tumor treatment by inhibiting tumor growth and inducing apoptosis. However, its therapeutic efficacy is often constrained by challenges such as inconsistent bioavailability, structural complexity, and potential side effects. To address these challenges, we developed a series of lignin derivatives incorporating bioactive intermediate structures to enhance their antitumor activity. These derivatives efficiently induced apoptosis in osteosarcoma (OS) through a mitochondria-dependent pathway. Notably, lignin derivatives with amino groups demonstrated pronounced cytotoxicity, while those featuring benzylamine substituents exhibited strong therapeutic effects, achieving tumor inhibition rates of up to 48%. Mechanistic investigations revealed that these derivatives disrupt mitochondrial membrane permeability, leading to cytochrome C release and subsequent activation of the apoptotic cascade. This process was characterized by the upregulation of BAX, Cyto-c, cleaved CASP3, and CASP9 and downregulation of BCL2. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that lignin derivatives significantly inhibited OS cell proliferation while maintaining a favorable biosafety profile. These results demonstrate the therapeutic potential of lignin derivatives in OS treatment by leveraging renewable resources to synthesize bioactive intermediates. This innovative approach not only enhances therapeutic efficacy but also establishes a sustainable paradigm for pharmaceutical development.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging contaminants that need to be urgently removed from water. In this study, a compression-resistant polyurethane foam modified by lignin is used to remove NPs from aqueous media via two mechanisms: (1) macropore transport in the polyurethane foam and (2) electrostatic, hydrogen bond and π–π conjugation interactions between NPs and the lignin-polyurethane foam. The roles of these two mechanisms change with the variation of the lignin content. When the lignin content was 2%, the resulting PU–Ln (2%) foam had an excellent adsorption capacity for NPs at pH 9. The results of the adsorption kinetics indicated that the adsorption of NPs on the polyurethane foam fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process mainly proceeded via chemical adsorption. The adsorption isotherms at different temperatures and the calculation of thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of NPs conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of PU–Ln (2%) for NPs was calculated to be 38.06 mg/g. Even after five adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorbents showed high NPs removal efficiency. Therefore, the lignin-modified polyurethane foam has a promising potential for application in NPs removal.
