PM6 is a polymer donor characterized by a wide bandgap, commonly utilized in high-performance polymer solar cells. In this study, we applied PM6 to the field of electrochemiluminescence for the first time. By sequentially modifying PM6, CS@luminol and ZIF-8 on the electrode, we constructed a simple yet novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of the colorant sunset yellow (SY). As a donor, PM6 enhanced the charge transfer rate within the system and improved its luminescence performance. CS served to stabilize the luminescent reagent due to its viscosity. ZIF-8 acted as an accelerator in the luminol luminescence system, facilitating the absorption of more active oxygen and generating additional reactive species on the electrode surface. The combined action of PM6 and ZIF-8 resulted in a luminol ECL sensor that exhibited a sensitive and stable signal. When exposed to sunset yellow, the ECL signal diminished consistently with increasing concentrations of SY. Under optimal conditions, the ECL attenuation signal demonstrated a linear relationship with the logarithm of SY concentration, with a linear range of 5.0 × 10 − 13 –5.0 × 10 − 8 mol L -1 , and a detection limit of 1.67 × 10 −13 mol L -1 (S/N = 3). The constructed sensor exhibited excellent stability, selectivity, and repeatability, making it suitable for the actual detection of sunset yellow in sports drinks.

A novel, sensitive and high selective flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) method for the determination of phenol is reported, based upon its decreasing effect on the CL reaction of luminol with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by manganese (III) deuteroporphyrin [MnDP, Scheme 1 , 3 ] in alkaline solution. Under the selected optimized experimental conditions, the relative CL intensity was linear with phenol in the range of 4.0 × 10 −9 to 4.0 × 10 −7 g mL −1 . The detection limit (3 σ ) was 6.3 × 10 −10 g mL −1 and the relative standard deviation for 1.0 × 10 −7 g mL −1 phenol ( n = 11) was 2.99%. The regression equation was I = 120.79 + 1.14 × 1010 c ( R = 0.9936). This method has been applied to the determination of phenol in water with satisfactory results.

This article describes a nonenzymatic chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) system for highly sensitive determination of hydroquinone. It was found that the Co(II)-catalyzed luminescence of luminol in pH 11.5 solution is transferred to CdTe quantum dots (QDs) via a CRET mechanism. Hydroquinone is oxidized by H 2 O 2 to benzoquinone which quenches the fluorescence of the QDs. The enhancement is attributed to the adsorption of Co(II) on the surface of the negatively charged QDs. The CRET system was applied in an assay for hydroquinone that has a detection limit of 0.17 nmol L −1 . The detection limit was lower by factors between 100 and 250,000 than earlier reported methods. The assay was successfully applied to the quantitation of hydroquinone in (spiked) water samples, with recoveries ranging from 95 % to 106 %, and relative standard deviations between 0.5 % and 2.4 %.
A Co(II)-luminol-H 2 O 2 -quantum dot chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer system was developed for highly sensitive detection of hydroquinone. Strong signals were observed due to energy transfer between luminol donor and CdTe quantum dots which is catalyzed by Co(II).

It is the first time to develop electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECRET) strategy using luminol-doped silica nanoparticles (luminol-SiNPs) for both “turn-off” detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) and “turn-on” detection of anesthetic drug lidocaine hydrochloride (LDC). The spectral overlap of ECL emission of luminol-SiNPs with the absorption of TNP triggers ECRET from luminol-SiNPs to TNP and results in the decreased ECL signals. Besides, the specific interaction between TNP and LDC consumes TNP, accordingly prevents ECRET from luminol-SiNPs to TNP and achieves increasing ECL signals. The proposed ECRET strategy using luminol-SiNPs exhibits fast response (within 10 min), high sensitivity with LOD of 22.4 nM for TNP and 92.5 nM for LDC, respectively. It is also successfully applied in ECRET detection of TNP in lake water, LDC in human serum and commercial drug sample detections with satisfactory recoveries. More importantly, ECL of luminol-SiNPs is measured via linear sweep voltammetry by electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen at negative potential (– 1 V) and in no need of adding hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Reactive oxygen species be generated in situ and make luminol-SiNPs system emit ECL, which makes ECL of the whole luminol-SiNPs system more stable than luminol-H 2 O 2 system.

Novel metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based solid catalysts have been synthesized by encapsulating Hemin into the HKUST-1 MOF materials. These have been first applied in the chemiluminescence field with outstanding performance. The functionalized MOFs not only maintain an excellent catalytic activity inheriting from Hemin but also can be cyclically utilized as solid mimic peroxidases in the neutral condition. The synthesized Hemin@HKUST-1 composites have been used to develop practical sensors for H2O2 and glucose with wide response ranges and low detection limits. It was envisioned that catalyst-functionalized MOFs for chemiluminescence sensing would have promising applications in green, selective, and sensitive detection of target analytes in the future.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for detecting oxytetracycline (OTC) was constructed by sequentially modifying luminol@β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and Ni-MOF@Pt NPs on the electrode surface. In this platform, luminol serves as a luminescent reagent, and Pt NPs serve as co-reaction accelerators of the system. β-CD and Ni-MOF are used as carriers to carry luminol and Pt NPs respectively, and the luminescence intensity was further improved by increasing the carrying capacit. In addition, the OTC quenching strategy is adopted, and the constructed sensor is based on the energy transfer of luminol. Under optimal conditions, this sensor exhibited the linear detection range of OTC was found to be between 2.0 × 10 −12 M to 2.0 × 10 −7 M, with a detection limit of 6.7 × 10 −13 M (S/N = 3). The sensor showed good high selectivity and ultra-sensitivity, and obtained satisfactory results when detecting honey and milk samples.

A fluorescent dual-emitting platform for fluorescent “turn-on” ratiometric detection of ascorbic acid in beverages was developed utilizing luminol-embedded iron-based metal–organic frameworks (luminol@Fe-DOBDC MOFs). Luminol@Fe-DOBDC MOFs with fluorescent emissions at 430 nm and 540 nm under excitation wavelength of 365 nm were applied to detect ascorbic acid on the basis of ascorbic acid triggering the reduction of Fe 3+ into Fe 2+ . In the presence of ascorbic acid, fluorescent intensity at 540 nm was increased significantly while fluorescent intensity at 430 nm was changed slightly. Two emission peaks separated by 110 nm can eliminate environmental interferences by built-in self-calibration of ratiometric signal, enhancing the sensitivity and accuracy. The increasing ratiometric fluorescent intensity ( I 540 nm / I 430 nm ) has linear relationship with the concentration of ascorbic acid from 0.2 to 30 μM with limit of detection of 70 nM. It is an efficient, sensitive and accurate platform to detect ascorbic acid in commercial beverages using transition-metal-based MOFs.

We have developed a novel flow-injection chemiluminescence analysis method to detect fluorescent whitening agent 2,2′-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diyldi-2,1-ethenediyl)bis-benzenesulfonic acid disodium salt (CBS) for the first time. A luminol–urea peroxide chemiluminescence reaction system was adopted, and the instrumental and chemical parameters were respectively optimized. Under optimal conditions, the relationship between the relative chemiluminescence intensity and the concentration of CBS was fitted in linear mode, and satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained (ΔI = 44.85CCBS + 165.39, CCBS, nmol L−1, r = 0.9978). This assay is linear from 1 to 600 nmol L−1, with limits of detection and quantification of 0.1 nmol L−1 and 0.4 nmol L−1, respectively. And the intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations are less than 1.5% and 4.5%. The proposed flow-injection chemiluminescence method had been successfully used in the determination of CBS in flour, and the recovery is 90.0–104.5%, which shows great potential in control of food safety. This method is sensitive and convenient, and could be comparable with others. Finally, a possible mechanism of chemiluminescence emission was also investigated.

PtCuCo trimetallic alloys (PtCuCo-TAs) are synthesized by one-step reduction. The chemiluminescence (CL) properties of PtCuCo-TAs are studied systemically. PtCuCo-TAs show good catalyzing for luminol-H 2 O 2 system. A CL platform is developed for the detection of miRNA-21 using PtCuCo-TAs as nanozyme catalyzer. In the CL detection platform, H1 (Hairpin DNA1) is immobilized onto magnetic beads (MBs) firstly. In the presence of miRNA-21, H1 is opened. H2 (Hairpin DNA2) then hybridizes with H1. Meanwhile, a “cleat” in the end of miRNA-21 with a fewer bases complementary is formed to prevent miRNA-21 dissociating from H1. This miRNA-21 hybridizes to another H1. When cpDNA-PtCuCo-TAs which consisted with cDNA (Complementary strand of probe DNA) and pDNA-PtCuCo-TAs (PtCuCo-TAs labeled with probe DNA) are added, the ssDNA region of H1 reacts with the toehold domain of probe DNA and cDNA is released resulting pDNA-PtCuCo-TAs being captured. With this process repeatedly, a lot of pDNA-PtCuCo-TAs are captured onto MBs. After separation and washing, the precipitate and H 2 O 2 are put into the 96-well and luminol solution is injected. The CL signal is produced by PtCuCo-TAs catalyzing luminol-H 2 O 2 system. The amount of miRNA-21 is detected with CL signal. This CL platform performs with limit of detection 0.167 fM and has good selectivity over other RNA.

An ultrasensitive sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was developed for detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) using an amplification strategy based on ZnO nanorods- l -cysteine-luminol nanocomposites and the biotin-streptavidin system. The biotin-streptavidin system served as a capture probe to increase the number of antibodies. ZnO nanorods not only acted as a nanocarrier that increased the number of luminol molecules and secondary antibodies, but also enhanced the ECL signal of luminol-H 2 O 2 system by promoting H 2 O 2 decomposition, which can further increase ECL intensity. Under optimized conditions, the proposed immunosensor demonstrated excellent analytical performance with a wide linear detection range of 0.03 pg mL −1 to 30 ng mL −1 and a detection limit of 0.01 pg mL −1 (the detection limit in real samples was 0.021 pg mL −1 ). This method exhibited excellent stability, reproducibility, and selectivity. In addition, the results of PSA determinations in human serum samples obtained using the proposed immunosensor were consistent with data collected using the commercial chemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer.

An ultrasensitive sandwich electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was designed for determination of concanavalin A (ConA) through the specific carbohydrate-ConA interactions. Three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) was synthesized, which loaded a large amount of luminescent reagents as luminol by encapsulating into its pores to form Zn-MOF@luminol complex. Interestingly, Zn-MOF also acted as the coreactant accelerator in the luminol-H 2 O 2 ECL system. This Zn-MOF@luminol complex was used as the signal probe to achieve a super strong and stable ECL signal. In addition, three-dimensional hierarchical molybdenum disulfide nanoflower and multiwalled carbon nanotubes complex (MoS 2 NF@MWCNTs) with peroxidase-mimicking enzyme property were used as a substrate to modify the glassy carbon electrode to further enhance the ECL signal of luminol by promoting decomposition of H 2 O 2 into reactive oxygen species (ROSs). In addition to the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalysis effect on the luminol ECL signal, a triple amplified ConA sandwich ECL sensor with high sensitivity sensor was constructed. The linear range for ConA detection was from 0.5 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.3 pg/mL ( S / N = 3). The recovery test for ConA in human serum samples was performed with satisfactory results.

In this work, an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor was constructed using poly- L -lysine (PLL) as a novel co-reactant of luminol and poly(luminol/aniline) nanorods loaded reduced graphene oxide ( [email protected] ) as nanoprobe, which enable highly sensitivity detection of glutathione (GSH). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that PLL was used for the co-reactant of luminol. Notably, about a 5-fold enhancement was obtained compared with the individual [email protected] using GCE . Due to the remarkable quenching effect between the excited state of PLL and the reduced form of GSH in the ECL system of luminol/PLL, the ECL sensing platform exhibited wide linear ranges of 1.0 × 10 −9 –1.0 × 10 −4 M and 1.0 × 10 −4 –1.0 × 10 −2 M and a low detection limit of 7.7 × 10 −10 M. Simultaneously, the biosensor was also successfully applied to detect GSH in human serum sample with high recoveries. Hence, this work would open a new platform for the wide application of PLL in immunoassay and various sensors.
