Sensitive colorimetric detection of melamine in processed raw milk using asymmetrically PEGylated gold nanoparticles

Xin-Yue Chen,Wei Ha,Yan-Ping Shi

In this study, the asymmetrically modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with relatively large size are proposed for highly sensitive detection of melamine in raw milk. At first, we found that the sensitivity of colorimetric detection of melamine based on the conventional citrate-stabilized AuNPs could be significantly increased (limit of detection by visual observation: from 1 μmol L −1 to 1 nmol L −1 ) via enlarging the size of AuNPs (from 13 to 42 nm). However, the large-sized AuNPs are unstable in the solution, and the accuracy of relevant aggregation-based colorimetric detection method is dramatically decreased due to the rapid evanishment of the color of solution caused by the precipitation of large-scaled AuNPs aggregates after introducing melamine. In view of this limitation, the stabilizing agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) is introduced onto the selected area at the surface of AuNPs to stabilize the large-sized AuNPs sensor and further adjust the aggregation behavior in an oriented and controllable manner. As a result, the addition of melamine into asymmetrically PEGylated AuNPs with large size could still induce a color change from purple to blue, but the color change could be maintained in aqueous solution for a long time. This improvement is mainly caused by forming stable and oriented oligomers of AuNPs taking advantage of the asymmetrical modification of AuNPs with PEG chain in this system. Such a way of aggregation leads to remarkably enhanced long-term stability and an at least 2 orders of magnitude wider dynamic detection range (1.05 nmol L −1 to 1 mmol L −1 ) compared with conventional AuNPs sensors. Finally, such a novel asymmetrically modified AuNPs sensor is successfully applied to detect melamine in the raw milk with the satisfactory spiked recovery from 99.6% to 103.7% and RSD of about 3.0%. This work provides a sensitive and reliable method to detect melamine in pretreated milk, indicating a new avenue to make innovation on colorimetric sensors for real sample detection.

Aptamer based hybrid monolithic pipette tips supported by melamine sponge for enrichment of proteins

Yue-lun Sun,Jie Cheng,Bin-bin Liu,Jun-qin qiao,Ling-yu Zhao,Hong-zhen Lian,Li Mao

Background The convenient preparation and application of functionalized organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic materials have obtained substantial interest in the pretreatment of complex samples by solid-phase extraction (SPE). Compared to the in-tube solid-phase microextraction in fused-silica capillaries, micro SPE in plastic pipette tips have fascinating merits for the easily operated enrichment of trace target analytes from biological samples. However, the poor compatibility of organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths with plastics leads to the rare appearance of commercial hybrid monolithic pipette tips (HMPTs). Therefore, how to synthesize the organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic materials with better extraction performance in plastic pipette tips becomes a challenge. Results We develop a facile and cheap strategy to immobilize organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths in pipette tips. Melamine sponge was employed as the supporting skeleton to in situ assemble amine- and thiol-bifunctionalized hybrid monolithic material via “one pot” in a pipette tip, and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and thiol-modified aptamer against human α-thrombin were sequentially attached to the hybrid monolith within the HMPTs. The average coverage density of the aptamer with GNPs as an intermediary reached as high as 818.5 pmol μL −1 . The enriched thrombin concentration was determined by a sensitive enzymatic chromogenic assay with the limit of detection of 2 nM. The extraction recovery of thrombin at 10 nM in human serum was 86.1 % with a relative standard deviation of 6.1 %. This proposed protocol has been applied to the enrichment and determination of thrombin in real serum sample with strong anti-interference ability, low limit of detection and high recovery. Significance The amine- and thiol-bifunctionalized HMPTs prepared with sponge as the skeleton frame provided a novel substrate material to decorate aptamers for efficient enrichment of proteins. This enlightens us that we can take advantage of the tunability of sponge assisted HMPTs to produce and tailor a variety of micro SPE pipette tips for broader applications on the analysis of trace targets in complex biological, clinic and environmental samples.

Rapid and sensitive colorimetric sensing of the insecticide pymetrozine using melamine-modified gold nanoparticles

Jing-yan Kang,Yu-jie Zhang,Xing Li,Chen Dong,Hong-yu Liu,Li-jing Miao,Paul J. Low,Zhi-xian Gao,Narayan S. Hosmane,Ai-guo Wu

A colorimetric sensor for the pesticide pymetrozine (PYM) based on analyte-induced aggregation of melamine-modified gold nanoparticles (M-Au NPs) has been developed with high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 80 nM by the naked eye and 10 nM by UV-Vis spectroscopy. This colorimetric sensing design exhibits lower detection limits, compared with limits of 46–148 nM for existing instrumental methods. The new aggregation-induced nanoparticle sensor is applicable for rapid colorimetric detection of PYM in real water environments (tap water and lake water) and food samples (green tea and apple juice). The technical approach for the colorimetric sensor is easier and simpler than detection of PYM by, for example, HPLC whilst giving equivalent results within the error of the measurements.

Determination of melamine in aquaculture feed samples based on molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction

Ziru Lian,Zhenlin Liang,Jiangtao Wang

This research highlights the application of highly efficient molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction for the preconcentration and analysis of melamine in aquaculture feed samples. Melamine-imprinted polymers were synthesized employing methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The characteristics of obtained polymers were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and binding experiments. The imprinted polymers showed an excellent adsorption ability for melamine and were applied as special solid-phase extraction sorbents for the selective cleanup of melamine. An off-line molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction procedure was developed for the separation and enrichment of melamine from aquaculture feed samples prior to high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Optimum molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction conditions led to recoveries of the target in spiked feed samples in the range 84.6–96.6% and the relative standard deviation less than 3.38% ( n = 3). The aquaculture feed sample was determined, and there was no melamine found. The results showed that the molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction protocols permitted the sensitive, uncomplicated and inexpensive separation and pre-treatment of melamine in aquaculture feed samples.

Highly fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles based on melamine for facile detection of TNT in soil

Jie Liu,Shenghong Yang,Fengyun Li,Lijun Dong,Jingjing Liu,Xiayan Wang,Qiaosheng Pu

Analyte oriented selection of the preparation procedure is essential for improving the sensing performance. Herein, we report a one-step approach to synthesize highly fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles through a solvothermal method and their application for sensitive detection of TNT in soil samples by a fluorescence spectrometric method. The polymeric nanoparticles with bright cyan fluorescence were obtained through polycondensation between melamine and terephthalaldehyde at 180 °C for 3 h. The nanoparticles were fully characterized and the effect of synthesis methods was compared based on the fluorescence intensity and quantum yield (QY). The results indicated that trace amounts of TNT could effectively quench the fluorescence of the polymeric nanoparticles. The effect of the possible co-existing substances was systematically investigated and it was proved that nanoparticles could be used for selective and robust detection of TNT. A limit of detection of 1.8 nmol L−1 was achieved. The standard addition recoveries for different soil samples were in the range of 95.3% and 106.4% with relative standard deviations below 5.2%.

Quantitative determination of melamine in milk using Ag nanoparticle monolayer film as SERS substrate

Ruoping Li,Jingliang Yang,Junhe Han,Junhui Liu,Mingju Huang

A Raman method employing silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) monolayer film as Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate was presented to rapidly detect melamine in milk. The Ag NPs with 80   nm diameter were modified by polyvinylpyrrolidone to improve their uniformity and chemical stability. The treatment procedure of liquid milk required only addition of acetic acid and centrifugation, and required time is less than 15   min. The Ag NP monolayer film significantly enhanced Raman signal from melamine and allowed experimentally reproducible determination of the melamine concentration. A good linear relationship (R 2 =0.994) between the concentration and Raman peak intensity of melamine at 681   cm −1 was obtained for melamine concentrations between 0.10   mg   L −1 and 5.00   mg   L −1 . This implies that this method can detect melamine concentrations below 1.0   mg   L −1 , the concentration currently considered unsafe.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular toward tetracycline degradation

Ziru Shao,Shuangfei Zhang,Yonghong Shi,Deyong Wu

For reducing the amount and fully utilizing active sites of CuO, microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular assembly (CuO/MCSA) was developed in situ and empolyed as efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for water decontamination. The characteristics of CuO/MCSA were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. CuO/MCSA showed strong catalytic ability to activate PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the condition of pH≈7 and PMS dosage of 0.5 mmol /L, 1 g/L CuO/MCSA including less than 3.0 wt% CuO can remove about 70% of 20 mg/L TC within 5 min. And after five consecutive cycles, the degradation rate of CuO/MCSA was still around 52.6%. PMS dosage, reaction temperature and initial pH value, co-existing anions and small molecule acids all affected the performance of CuO/MCSA/PMS system on TC degradation. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, 1O2 played the most important role in TC degradation in CuO/MCSA/PMS system. In addition, CuO/CSA/PMS system exhibited wide applicability, which can effectively remove TC in different water bodies (deionized water, tap water and lake water) and various pollutants (TC, methylene orange and methyl blue). Overall, this work provided an effective strategy to enhance the efficient utilization of catalyst for PMS activation.

Fluorine-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Superhydrophobic Modified Melamine Sponge for Efficient oil–water Separation

Yaxue Zhang,Jihong Fu,Wenxia Xue,Guoqi Liu,Ronglan Wu

Hydrophobic sponges have attracted significant interest in oil spills and water–oil separation as potential absorption materials due to their desirable absorptivity, selectivity, and elasticity. In this paper, a hydrophilic melamine sponge (MS) is transferred into a superhydrophobic sponge via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification followed by in situ growth of fluorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (denoted as TFA-COF) nanoparticles. Therefore, the PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge was successfully prepared for efficient oil–water separation. The resultant PDMS@TFA-COF@MS exhibits superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 156.7°. The superhydrophobic sponge has selectivity adsorption for different organic solvents and oils from water as well as oil–water separation efficiency (96% after 30 cycles) and oil absorption capacity (12 646% after 30 cycles). Meanwhile, the PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge exhibits strong thermal stability and flame retardancy in addition to having exceptional resistance to chemical corrosion in acidic, alkaline, and salt solutions. Moreover, the surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion could be efficiently separated by the sponge. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophobic PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge demonstrates possible uses for long-life oil–water separation applications.

Wei Li,Shijie Dai,Xiang Li,Qianjin Li,Jianlin Li

The stability, reproducibility and engineering of SERS substrate faces a great challenge in melamine SERS assay. In this work, a simple, highly sensitive, stable and cost-efficient SERS detection platform for melamine was established based on its Raman fingerprints spectrum. The Ag@ porous silicon photonic crystal (Ag@PPC) was prepared as the 3D SERS substrate by electrochemical etching and magnetron sputter technology. The main influence factors for the preparation of SERS substrate were investigated in detail. The analytical enhancement factor of the 3D SERS substrate can reach to 2.6 × 10 8 . The 3D SERS detection platform showed a wide linear detection range of 10 −4 ∼10 mg L −1 and a low limit of detection of 0.1 μg L −1 for melamine. Moreover, such detection platform showed good stability, high reproducibility and high recovery rates for melamine. The 3D Ag@PPC SERS substrate can be easily prepared and engineered, displaying a great potential application in food safety field.

Bayberry tannin-functionalized melamine foam: A recyclable scaffold for nZVI-catalyzed metronidazole reductive degradation

Shuangmei Liu,Siqi Liu,Jiawei Wang,Jiangwei Ren,Yongxiang Li,Hui Mao

The presence of metronidazole (MNZ) in medical wastewater poses a potential threat to environmental safety and people's health. Herein, we report an innovative strategy to fabricate a recyclable bayberry tannin (BT)-functionalized melamine foam (MF)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (MFBT-Fe 0 ) catalyst for efficient MNZ degradation in medical wastewater. The through-pore structure of MF reduced mass transfer resistance in heterogeneous systems, while the amphiphilic BT stabilized nZVI via steric hindrance and chelating interactions and created a high-concentration MNZ microenvironment through hydrophobic combined with hydrogen bonding. The synergistic design overcame the long-standing challenges of mass transfer limitations in heterogeneous systems, nZVI aggregation- and shedding-mediated activity degradation, and the establishment of high-concentration microenvironments for MNZ reductive transformation. Consequently, the highly accessible nZVI catalyst, MFBT-Fe 0 , rapidly removed MNZ, achieving a 96.4 ± 0.82 % removal rate within 90 min, with a degradation capability 2.9-fold higher than the non-BT-functionalized MF-Fe 0 . MFBT-Fe 0 exhibited exceptional cycle stability, maintaining an MNZ removal rate of up to 80 % after 6th cycles. Mechanistic studies revealed contributions from surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking, with HPLC-MS confirming degradation pathways of nitro reduction, denitrification and hydroxyethyl cleavage. This work provides a sustainable, high-performance catalyst for practical MNZ removal, addressing both efficiency and recyclability challenges in medical wastewater treatment.

Facile fabrication of magnetic and superoleophilic composite melamine sponges for efficient oil-water separation

Long Chen,Yankun Guo,Peiyu Cui,Zexin Lin,Junlong Yao,Syed Ali Raza Naqvi,Yimin Sun,Yani Guo

s Polyphenol-amine exhibits strong adhesive properties, attributed to its structural similarity to dopamine. In this study, Polyphenol-amine formed from low-cost catechol and diethyltriamine (DETA) as monomers, was blended with hydrophobic agents, including n-dodecyl mercaptan, stearic acid, and ferric oxide, to form soaking agents. Using a facile and environmentally friendly dip-coating method with commercial melamine sponges (MS) as templates, two types of sponges were fabricated: a hydrophobic superoleophilic sponge (PCAD/MS) and a magnetic superhydrophobic superoleophilic sponge (SA/Fe 3 O 4 @PCA/MS). Both modified sponges exhibit exceptional oil absorption capacities, ranging from 74 to 152 g/g and 63–118 g/g for various oils and organic solvents, high oil–water separation efficiency (>99.1 % and >99.5 %), respectively. Additionally, they demonstrate excellent resistance to acidic, alkaline, and saline conditions, remarkable recyclability, and effective demulsification performance. Notably, the magnetic SA/Fe 3 O 4 @PCA/MS could be remotely actuated for continuous oil-water separation, enhancing its potential for large-scale oil spill cleanup and industrial wastewater treatment. Compared with conventional polydopamine- or fluorine-based coatings, this method provides a greener, more economical, and scalable solution for the fabrication of high-performance oil-absorbent materials.

A series of hierarchical porous Al2O3 materials fabricated from melamine foam for dye adsorption

Huijuan Zou,Weibing Zhang,Qihuang Wu,Taici Huang,Wei Xu,Xinxin Xi,Yanling Cheng,Huatay Lin

In this study, a series of hierarchical porous Al 2 O 3 with controlled morphology were synthesized using melamine foam (MF) as a sacrificial template. Comprehensive characterization through XRD, FTIR, Raman spectra, SEM, TEM, and N 2 adsorption-desorption confirmed the successful fabrication of graphite skeleton-guided hierarchical porousAl 2 O 3 by precise control of calcination temperature. The hierarchical porous Al 2 O 3 materials calcined at 1000 ℃,1400 ℃, and 1500 ℃ demonstrated unique structural features and higher positive Zeta potential, exhibiting remarkably fast adsorption kinetics and exceptional Congo red (CR) adsorption capacities that significantly surpassed previously reported values in literature. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating chemisorption as the dominant mechanism. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm was best described by the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer adsorption behavior. These findings demonstrate that our cost-effectively fabricated hierarchical porous Al 2 O 3 represents a highly promising adsorbent for efficient removal of organic dyes from wastewater.
