Recently, EDTA-chelated Cd II (Cd II -EDTA) was effectively removed by sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI). However, few studies have been performed to investigate the influence of co-existing ions and emerging contaminants (such as microplastics) on the performance of S-nZVI toward Cd II -EDTA, which is vital for the application of S-nZVI in practical wastewater treatment. In this study, the individual effects of different co-existing ions (NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ ) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics with different concentrations on the removal of Cd II -EDTA by S-nZVI were systematically investigated. The removal capacity of S-nZVI toward Cd II -EDTA fell in the range of 579.3–644.7, 612.3–670.2, 607.4–691.3, 533.3–623.6, 79.9–545.3, 544.3–631.7, and 568.6–663.8 mg/g for the presence of NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and PS microplastics over the concentration range of 10.0–150.0 mg/L, respectively, which were all smaller than that of the system of Cd II -EDTA alone (746.6 mg/g), indicating that all of the investigated co-existing substances showed inhibitory effects on Cd II -EDTA removal. As for NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , or Mg 2+ -containing system, the inhibitory effect was ascribed to the influence of S-nZVI corrosion rate; As for PO 4 3− , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , or PS microplastics-containing system, the negative effect was caused by changing the corrosion of S-nZVI and occupying the reactive sites at the surface of S-nZVI. The final corrosion products of S-nZVI under different reaction conditions were strongly dependent on the species and concentration of co-existing substance with the combinations of γ-FeOOH, α-Fe 2 O 3 , FeO, or β-FeOOH as the dominant corrosion products.

nZVI was immobilized on MIL-101(Cr), a metal–organic framework (MOF), and subsequently utilized for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution. This composite was also tested for its toxicity to Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). The results demonstrated that MIL-101(Cr) and nZVI had a significant synergistic effect. This composite material is excellent for removing U(VI) and the optimal ratio of MIL-101(Cr) to nZVI was found to be 1.2:1 on mass basis. Adsorption data exhibited excellent fitting to the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, and a maximum removal capacity of 526.32 mg/g of U(VI) was achieved by M-Fe at 298 K (pH = 6.0). The removal mechanisms were clarified by the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Results reveled that U(VI) was mainly removed through chemisorption, forming a bidentate mononuclear edge-sharing linkage between UO 3 pyramid and iron(hydro)oxide. Through free radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis, it was indicated that the existence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accelerates the oxidation of nZVI, generating more iron oxides or hydroxides for U(VI) adsorption, while inhibiting the reduction of U(VI) to U(IV). Furthermore, immobilized nZVI on MIL-101(Cr) mitigated the biotoxicity of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). Direct contact played a crucial role in inactivating E. coli cells by nZVI/ E. coli system. Extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) played a vital role in inactivating E. coli in the M-Fe/ E. coli system where OH is the main ROS. These findings enhance our understanding of the mechanism of U(VI) removal and bactericidal effect on organisms using ZVI-based composites, which will broaden the application scope of the two materials in pollution removal, especially in radioactive decontamination.

For facile fabrication of environmentally friendly nanoparticle film carriers, the present study utilized sodium periodate to oxidize and induce the self-crosslinking of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and guar gum (GG). Innovatively, the film preparation process involves refrigerated air-drying technique to simultaneously achieve interface modification. The dendritic structure and swelling characteristics produced by the refrigerated air-drying technique significantly increased the specific surface area and improved the dispersion and loading of NZVI. The biodegradable and swell-hydrolyzable characteristics of KGM-GG enabled the green treatment of the carriers. To evaluate the performance of the film, a composite material with highly dispersed nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) was prepared to remove Cr(Ⅵ) in a wide pH range, especially under strongly acidic media. At room temperature and pH 2.0, Fe 0 /KGM-GG loaded with 1.2 mg of NZVI could completely remove Cr(Ⅵ) within 60 min. By characterization analysis, this rapid removal may be achieved by synergistic interactions such as adsorption, reduction, co-precipitation, and formation of bidentate-mononuclear complexes. The results showed that Fe 0 /KGM-GG had a good anti-interference ability in the presence of HA and coexisting ions. In this study, a new method for preparing environmentally friendly nanoparticle carriers with high loading and high dispersion through polysaccharide self-crosslinking and refrigerated air-drying film-making technology has been proposed, which provides a new way for green and sustainable synthesis of nanoparticle carrier materials.

The performance of trichloroethene (TCE) removal was initially investigated in sodium persulfate (SPS) or potassium monopersulfate triple salt (PMS) oxidative environment by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported nZVI (nZVI-rGO) catalyst and further the role of sulphur by anchoring nano FeS on nZVI-rGO (FeS@nZVI-rGO) was evaluated. The high usage of oxidants and stability of FeS@nZVI-rGO catalyst were significantly improved due to the insoluble nature of this innovative catalyst by involvement of nano FeS which limited the rapid iron loss caused by the corrosion of active sites and mitigated rapid oxidants decomposition in FeS@nZVI-rGO/SPS and FeS@nZVI-rGO/PMS systems. The tests for target contaminant removal showed that over 95 % TCE could be removed at 100 mg L −1 FeS@nZVI-rGO and 1.2 mM SPS or 0.3 mM PMS dosages, in which over 85 % TCE could be dechlorinated. The reactive oxygen radicals (ROSs) generation mechanisms and their contribution to TCE removal were investigated through radical scavenge tests in both systems, indicating that both HO and SO 4 − were the major ROSs rather than O 2 − . In conclusion, this study revealed the well function and fundamental mechanism of this innovative catalyst by anchoring nano FeS and worth of further demonstration of this technique in TCE contaminated groundwater remediation application.
