In this report, a rapid approach for the synthesis of protein conjugated gold nanoclusters under heating condition (AuNCs-protein(p)-heating(h)) was proposed. These AuNCs-p-h were synthesized within 3 min at approximately 100 °C and contain remarkable peroxidase-like activity. Notably, in the presence of tea polyphenols (TPs), the peroxidase-like activity of AuNCs-p-h is restrained, which is likely due to the TP-induced aggregation. A facile approach for TP sensing based on the inhibition effect of TPs towards the peroxidase mimic activity of AuNCs-p-h has been developed. Tea is one of the most popular and health beneficial beverages, the favourable effect of which attributes greatly to its key component, TPs. TP detection thus becomes an important task for various food and beverage companies. This novel TP colorimetric detecting method exhibits a linear response in the concentration range of 10 nM to 10 μM with detection limit of 10 nM as well as prominent selectivity towards various TP related molecules including tyrosol, protocatechuate, chlorogenic acid, theophylline, l -theanine, and l -norepinephrine hydrochloride. Comparing with the traditional tartaric acid colorimetric approach (Tac), this new system shows basically identical experimental results but with much higher sensitivity. AuNCs-p-h can be readily used for TP quantification from real tea samples.

The method of adding additives at once not only increases costs, but also poses a risk of excessive consumption. Therefore, the slow-release technology was employed for improving the utilization efficiency and edible safety of additives in this work. The poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and polylactic acid (PLA) composite hydrogels with sheath-core structure were fabricated by in-situ spinning method. The mechanical bearing capacity of PNIPAM hydrogel was improved by controlling the structure of PLA electrospun fiber membrane. The results showed that the compression resistance of the samples coated with PLA was increased 931 % at 50 % deformation. In addition, the surface wettability of samples was studied to ensure the stable water permeability. The composite hydrogel was used for the sustained release of tea polyphenol (TP) antioxidant. The release effect of TP at different temperatures, and radical scavenging effect of 2, 2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2-Phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetraMethyliMidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl) (PTIO) were investigated. It was found that the release rate for TP could reach to 77.8 % at 30 °C. The radical clearance rates of ABTS and PTIO were 99.2 % and 46.6 %, respectively. This work provides effective ideas for the use of antioxidants in food preservation processes.

In this study, covalent octenyl succinic anhydride starch-soy protein- (−)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (OSAS-SP-EGCG) complexes were synthesized by H 2 O 2 / ascorbic acid radical grafting method. Particle size, ζ-potential, Fourier transform infrared, and thermogravimetric results proved the formation of covalent OSAS-SP-EGCG complexes. The results of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed that the particles of the covalent complexes (especially 1:4 complexes) were more uniformly distributed. Compared with single OSAS, the covalent complexes exhibited excellent antioxidant capacity (>70 %). Static/dynamic contact angle, dynamic interfacial tension and quartz crystal microbalance were used to characterize the interfacial properties of the samples. Results showed that the stronger hydrophobicity of the complexes resulted in lower interfacial tension, which was stabilized at 17 mN/m after 45 min. Among the complexes, 1:4 complexes showed the most visible interfacial properties, with the initial and equilibrium surface values increasing by 12.1 % and 24.3 %, respectively. Moreover, the saturated f displacement of 1:4 complexes reached 50.45 Hz. It was indicated that better interfacial adsorption capacity of the complexes allowed them to adsorb more quickly to the oil-water interface and form thicker and denser interfacial films. This work provides a promising avenue for improving the interfacial properties of covalent polysaccharide-protein-polyphenol complexes.

With increasing global environmental awareness and concerns about food safety, biodegradable active packaging has garnered widespread attention. In this study, the stability and bioactivity of tea polyphenol (TP) were enhanced through the preparation of TP–ferric nanoparticles (TP–Fe NPs) using metal–polyphenol ion coordination. Moreover, the introduction of Fe ions can further enhance the antibacterial effects of TP–Fe NPs. Using the hydrogen bonding between konjac glucomannan (KGM) and zein to enhance the hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of the film. By employing KGM and zein as the matrix, we incorporated TP–Fe NPs as active fillers to create multifunctional active packaging films. This study aimed to meet the needs of food safety and sustainable development goals. The resulting film exhibited excellent water resistance (water contact angle: 117.73°), mechanical strength (tensile strength: 21.82 MPa, elongation at break: 94.30 %), ultraviolet-shielding ability (>99 %), biodegradability (5 days in soil), and antioxidant (>85 %) and antibacterial (>99 %) properties. Moreover, the film significantly reduced strawberry decay and extended its shelf life by 10 days. These findings provide new insights into the application of nanomaterials in active packaging, highlighting their potential and advantages in food preservation.

The combination of polyphenols and protein can improve the functional characteristics of protein. How to effectively promote the binding of polyphenols to protein is still a difficult topic. In this study, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was used to induce the fabrication of complexes between soy protein isolate (SPI) and different polyphenols (tannic acid (TA), chlorogenic acid (CGA), ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), and gallic acid (GA)). The effect of HC on the interaction between polyphenols and SPI was investigated, and the structural and functional properties of the formed complexes were characterized. The results showed that HC treatment led to SPI structure stretching, which increased the binding level of polyphenols, especially that of TA (increased from 35.08 ± 0.73% to 66.42 ± 1.35%). The increase in ultraviolet–visible absorption intensity and quenching of fluorescence intensity confirmed that HC enhanced the interaction between polyphenols and protein. HC treatment reduced the contents of free sulfhydryl and amino groups in SPI–polyphenol complexes and altered their Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, indicating that HC treatment promoted the formation of C–N and C–S bonds between SPI and polyphenols. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated that HC treatment altered the secondary structure of SPI–polyphenol complexes, inducing an increase in α-helix and random coil contents and a decrease in β-sheet content. Regarding functional properties, HC treatment improved the emulsification and antioxidant activity of SPI–polyphenol complexes. Therefore, HC is an effective technique for promoting the binding of polyphenols to protein.

Effective capture of radioactive iodine vapor is a crucial part of the spent fuel reprocessing process. In this study, humic acid (HA), which has excellent recognition capture of iodine vapor, is introduced as the active site construction center, functionalizing and modifying alkali-activated collagen fiber (ACF), to prepare the biomass composite functional materials (HA@ACF). The results demonstrate that HA@ACF exhibits exceptional recognition ability and a strong affinity for iodine vapor, with an adsorption capacity of 2811.8 mg/g (ACF is only 1068.6 mg/g). Simultaneously, under relative humidity of 27 % and strong acid conditions, the iodine vapor capture capacity of HA@ACF only decreased by 17.2 %, indicating that the material exhibits excellent iodine capture performance under complex conditions. The excellent adsorption performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of abundant −NHR, C = O, and phenolic hydroxyl active sites in HA@ACF, which recognize and induce iodine vapor, resulting in the capture of iodine molecules as I 3 - . Meanwhile, DFT calculations reveal the excellent adsorption energy (−0.51 eV) of iodine vapor on the phenolic hydroxyl groups on HA . Therefore, the HA@ACF biomass composite functional material can be an ideal candidate adsorbent for the efficient recognition capture of radioactive iodine vapor in airborne effluent.

Hydrogels incorporating natural biopolymer and adhesive substances have extensively been used to develop bioactive drugs and to design cells encapsulating sturdy structure for biomedical applications. However, the conjugation of the adhesive in most hydrogels is insufficient to maintain long-lasting biocompatibility inadequate to accelerate internal organ tissue repair in the essential native cellular microenvironment. The current work elaborates the synthesis of charged choline-catechol ionic liquid (BIL) adhesive and a hydrogel with an electronegative atom rich polyphenol (PU)-laden gelatinmethacryloyl (GelMA) to improve the structural bioactivities for in vivo tracheal repair by inducing swift crosslinking along with durable mechanical and tissue adhesive properties. It was observed that Bioactive BIL and PU exhibited potent antioxidant (IC 50 % of 7.91 μg/mL and 24.55 μg/mL) and antibacterial activity against E. coli , P. aeruginosa and S. aureus . The novel integration of photocurable GelMA-BIL-PU revealed outstanding mechanical strength, biodegradability and sustained drug release. The in vitro study showed exceptional cell migration and proliferation in HBECs, while in vivo investigation of the GelMA-BIL-PU hydrogel on a rat's tracheal model revealed remarkable tracheal reconstruction, concurrently reducing tissue inflammation. Furthermore, the optimized GelMA-BIL-PU injectable adhesive bioink blend demonstrated superior MSCs migration and proliferation, which could be a strong candidate for developing stem cell-rich biomaterials to address multiple organ defects.

Polymer microneedles (MNs) have emerged as promising next-generation transdermal drug delivery platforms owing to their noninvasive nature and high delivery efficiency. Conventional fabrication strategies for polymer MNs mainly rely on mold-assisted vacuum casting or hot pressing. However, these approaches often fail to simultaneously achieve rapid fabrication and mild processing conditions, which are particularly critical for the fabrication of temperature-sensitive drug-loaded MNs. Herein, we report a vacuum-assisted pressing strategy for MN fabrication based on O -carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCA) and natural polyphenol protocatechuic acid (PCA) supramolecular composite slurries. This method enables MN production under significantly reduced processing times (<12 h) and mild thermal conditions (50 °C). Viscoelastic supramolecular composite slurries can be obtained by precisely tuning the polymer-to-polyphenol ratio, which is highly compatible with vacuum-assisted pressing in MNs molding. The resulting polymer-polyphenol supramolecular composites exhibit robust mechanical properties, with a fracture stress of 0.5 MPa and a toughness of 1.31 MJ·m −3 . Notably, supramolecular MNs demonstrated a high fracture force of up to 1.08 N per needle, indicating sufficient mechanical integrity for transdermal insertion. This fabrication strategy offers a viable route for low-cost, scalable, and mild MN fabrication, highlighting its strong potential for practical and commercial applications.

The treatment of textile dyeing wastewater, containing high concentrations of dyes and salts, remains a critical environmental challenge. There is growing interest in loose nanofiltration membranes (LNMs) for their ability to selectively separate dyes from salts, yet conventional fabrication strategies are often constrained by the inherent trade-off between permeability and selectivity, as well as difficulties in scalable production. This study developed a novel LNM via one-step interfacial polymerization (IP) strategy by synergistically incorporating tannic acid (TA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) into the aqueous piperazine phase. This synergy is proposed to arise from the complementary roles of the two additives: TA extends polymer chains to enlarge membrane pores and enhance surface negative charge, while CTAB acts as an interfacial regulator to reduce selective layer thickness and modulate IP kinetics. Optimized membranes containing 0.8 g·L −1 TA and 0.4 wt% CTAB exhibited a significantly thinner selective layer (36.03 nm) and loose pore size (0.646 nm) compared to the control, resulting in a remarkable pure water permeance of 44.77 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , surpassing that of the pristine polyamide membrane by a factor of nearly two. The membrane also demonstrated excellent selectivity, with 97.5% rejection of Direct Fast Blue B2RL and over 94% transmission of NaCl. A strong negative zeta potential (−45 mV at pH 7) enabled Donnan-effect-dominated dye retention while facilitating salt permeation. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that CTAB competitively adsorbs at the water–organic interface, moderating the IP kinetics, while TA promotes homogeneous water dispersion within the membrane, modulating chain packing and enhancing pore size upon hydration. Long-term filtration tests confirmed stable performance over 24 h under dye/salt mixture. This study introduces a facile, scalable, and economical strategy for fabricating high-performance LNMs, offering both mechanistic insights and practical potential for resource-oriented treatment of textile wastewater.

To enhance the surface hydrophilicity of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fibers and expand their industrial applications in fire-resistant/radiation-resistant workwear, water electrolysis hydrogen production diaphragms, and fiber paper, this study modified PPS nonwovens using three polyphenols: dopamine, gallic acid, and tannic acid. Specifically, the catechol groups in polyphenols were utilized to adsorb hydrolyzed titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) from an aqueous solution of ammonium hexafluorotitanate, thereby forming polyphenol/PPS/TiO 2 composites materials. The physicochemical properties (e.g., morphology, elemental composition) and surface properties (e.g., hydrophilicity, mechanical performance, etc.) of modified and unmodified fabrics were characterized using a suite of analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurement, water absorption testing, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and stress–strain testing. Additionally, the effects of polyphenol type, polyphenol concentration, and reaction time on hydrophilicity of the modified nonwovens were investigated to determine the optimal modification conditions. Results showed that polyphenol modification, combined with subsequent TiO 2 treatment, significantly improved the surface hydrophilicity of PPS nonwovens while preserving their favorable mechanical properties and friction resistance. Among the three polyphenols, the dopamine/PPS/TiO 2 composite exhibited the best wettability: when 2% dopamine (mass concentration) and subjected to 18 h of deposition, the water contact angle decreased from 146.0° (for unmodified PPS) to 51.9°, and the water absorption capacity of the PPS nonwovens increased to 508.4 mL/m 2 /s.

Oral delivery of probiotics is fundamentally constrained by the trade-off between gastrointestinal protection and therapeutic activity at inflamed intestinal sites. Here, we report a polyphenol-regulated mineralization strategy that programs a hierarchical petaloid mineral shield on probiotic surfaces through a mild one-pot process. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) directed calcium phosphate assembly into a stacked petaloid shield on Limosilactobacillus reuteri , providing protection during fabrication and gastrointestinal transit while preserving bacterial proliferative capacity. The petaloid shield also enabled immobilization of hyaluronic acid and enhanced retention at inflamed intestinal sites. Partial shield disintegration released EGCG for reactive oxygen species scavenging and local microenvironment modulation alongside liberated probiotics. In a dextran sulfate sodium–induced colitis model, the engineered probiotics reduced disease activity, attenuated inflammatory responses, repaired intestinal barrier integrity, and improved gut microbiota homeostasis. This work provides a polyphenol-regulated mineralization strategy to engineer multifunctional probiotic shields for oral delivery of living therapeutics.

Infected burn wounds remain challenging to treat because bacterial contamination and oxidative stress can jointly compromise tissue repair. Herein, we report an adhesive supramolecular elastomer patch (PLCTF) constructed from a dynamic poly(α-lipoic acid) network reinforced by Fe-polyphenol coordination and hydrogen bonding. The reversible disulfide chemistry of lipoic acid contributes to network adaptability, resulting in improved mechanical performance and conformal adhesion on moist skin-like biological tissue surfaces. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, PLCTF converted the incident NIR light into localized heat, thereby further enhancing PLCTF-mediated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli under controlled irradiation conditions. In addition, the polyphenolic motifs and lipoic acid-related components provided radical-scavenging activity, as evidenced by chemical radical-scavenging assays and intracellular ROS fluorescence analysis. PLCTF also showed favorable hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility, including after short-term NIR exposure, and promoted fibroblast migration. In an S. aureus-infected burn wound model, PLCTF combined with NIR irradiation accelerated wound closure and improved histological healing outcomes, including enhanced collagen deposition and re-epithelialization. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed increased angiogenesis-associated signals and reduced inflammation-associated marker staining. These results indicate that PLCTF integrates wet-tissue adhesion, ROS-scavenging activity, and NIR-assisted antibacterial function, supporting its promise as an antibiotic-free topical dressing for superficial infected burn wounds.
