Ce-Doping Rather Than CeO2 Modification and Their Synergistic Effect: Promotion from Ce Species in the Electrocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Over NiFe–LDH

Yanyan Zhang,Guangtong Hai,Zhuoshen Huang,Zhimeng Liu,Xiubing Huang,Ge Wang

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) is an effective route to produce value-added chemicals with low energy consumption. In this work, efficient electrocatalysts are prepared by varying the amount of Ce doping and CeO 2 modification on NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe–LDH) nanosheets supported on carbon cloth (CC). Through Ce doping and heterogeneous interface construction, the electronic structure and coordination chemistry of NiFe–LDH are greatly changed. Compared to CeO 2 modification and the synergistic effect of Ce-doping and CeO 2 modification, CC@NiFeCe(3%)-LDH with only Ce-doping show excellent charge transfer ability, higher HMF conversion (95.73%), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) selectivity (93.31%), and Faraday efficiency (99.47%) at only 1.44 V RHE . Density-functional theory calculations and X-ray fine structure spectroscopy demonstrate that Ce doping, compared with CeO 2 modification and their synergistic effects, significantly facilitates the electron transport and optimizes intermediate adsorption by effectively lowering the activation energy for the transformation of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) and encourage the conversion of FFCA to FDCA. Overall, this work systemically investigates the HMFOR behaviors of CC@NiFe–LDH under Ce doping, CeO 2 modification, and their synergetic effect, which provides some guidance on the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for HMFOR performance.

Preparation of high oxygen vacancies catalyst CeO2/Al2O3-SiC and its mechanism in enhancing the catalytic ozonation of organic pollutants in coal chemical wastewater

Pengfei Li,Yongjun Liu,Zhuangzhuang Yang,Lu Yang,Pan Liu,Zhe Liu,Xiaowei Li

The complete harmless treatment of aromatic organic compounds in coal chemical wastewater (CCW) has always been a big challenge in water process engineering. This study addresses the issue by designing and preparing a kind of Ce and Al bimetallic catalyst with high oxygen vacancies (OVs) based on SiC carrier. The results showed that CeO 2 and Al 2 O 3 were uniformly dispersed on SiC, and the composite material exhibited an ordered cubic structure. The degradation efficiency and enhancement mechanism of the catalyst with ozone oxidation were investigated. When applied to actual CCW with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration exceeding 600 mg/L, the synergy between O 3 and CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 -SiC increased the degradation efficiency of phenols from 50 % to 99 % and COD from 42 % to 78 % compared to using O 3 alone. CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 -SiC had a high concentration of oxygen vacancies (OVs = 48.57 %). Further research indicated that oxygen vacancies (OVs) were the main active sites for ozone adsorption and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments also confirmed that O 3 , •O 2 −1 , 1 O 2 were the main active oxidation factors, rather than •OH. Additionally, even after granulating the catalyst, it still achieved 99 % degradation of phenols. Therefore, this study provides theoretical support for the complete harmless treatment of CCW and has broad prospects for industrial application.

Dual regulation of geometry and water activation over coherent interface-rich inverse CeO2/CuO catalysts enabling highly selective CO2 electroreduction from C2H4 to CH4

Yue Shen,Jielian Yang,Bing Chen,Chunyan Zhou,Liya Zhou,Binbin Luo,Qi Pang,Peican Chen,Xuetang Xu,Anxiang Guan

Developing efficient electrocatalysts capable of achieving effective electrochemical CO 2 -to-CH 4 conversion over a broad potential window remains a significant challenge in the field. Herein, we present a facile strategy for the synthesis of inverse CeO 2 /CuO catalysts through a hydrothermal approach, wherein CeO 2 nanodomains are supported on the surface of CuO. This catalyst exhibits exceptionally high CH 4 selectivity across the investigated voltage range, with a peak Faradaic efficiency of 63.6% and a corresponding partial current density of −472.9 mA cm −2 at −1.6 V vs. RHE, while the pure CuO catalyst without CeO 2 component was found to be active for electroreducing CO 2 to C 2+ products (C 2 H 4 ), as the adjacent Cu sites were beneficial for adsorbing multiple *CO intermediates and subsequent C C coupling. The incorporation of CeO 2 into Cu 1 Ce 9 -O x exerts a dual regulatory effect, synergistically suppressing C C coupling by reducing *CO coverage and optimizing *CO protonation kinetics for enhanced CH 4 selectivity. The presence of CeO 2 not only blocks the active sites of CuO for CO 2 -to-*CO intermediate conversion (thus lowering *CO coverage) but also facilitates water dissociation to generate abundant *H species, which subsequently migrate to Cu sites in Cu 1 Ce 9 -O x catalyst through the coherent interface between CuO and CeO 2 . These *H species subsequently facilitate the hydrogenation of *CO intermediates, ultimately resulting in CH 4 formation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that CuCe-O x catalyst with strong H 2 O dissociation capability decreases the energy barrier for *CHO formation and favors *CO → *CHO conversion, thereby promoting CO 2 RR-to-CH 4 conversion. This work provides an effective strategy to enhance *H generation and the hydrogenation of *CO intermediates, thereby offering a feasible approach to improve CH 4 production efficiency in electrochemical CO 2 conversion. Compared with pristine CuO, CeO 2 nanodomains anchored on CuO surfaces redirect CO 2 electroreduction selectivity from C 2 H 4 to CH 4 . The presence of CeO 2 not only modulate *CO intermediate coverage but also accelerate H 2 O dissociation to produce abundant *H species, thereby promoting *CO protonation and boosting CH 4 formation with enhanced Faradaic efficiency. Enhanced low-temperature dry reforming of methane over morphology-controlled Co/CeO2 catalysts: the critical role of oxygen vacancies and Co–O–Ce interfaces

Yanni Liu,Dong Shen,Jun Liu,Yuqiong Zhao,Guojie Zhang

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a promising route for the simultaneous utilization of CH 4 and CO 2 to produce syngas, yet the development of efficient and stable catalysts for low-temperature DRM remains highly challenging. In this work, a series of Co/CeO 2 catalysts with morphology-controlled ceria supports were prepared to investigate the structure–performance relationship in DRM. Among them, the catalyst supported on CeO 2 nanorods (Co/CeO 2 -R) exhibited the best catalytic activity and stability at 600 °C. Structural characterization suggests that the CeO 2 -R support provides a higher surface area and defect density, which favors Co dispersion and the formation of Co-O-Ce interfacial structures. Raman, XPS, and H 2 -TPR results indicate that Co/CeO 2 -R possesses a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and stronger interfacial interactions compared with other catalysts. CO 2 -TPD measurements further show enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity, which is consistent with the increased density of defect sites. The results collectively suggest that the improved catalytic performance originates from the synergistic effect of Co dispersion, oxygen vacancies, and Co-O-Ce interfacial structures, which together promote CO 2 activation, oxygen transfer, and carbon removal. In situ DRIFTS results suggest a bifunctional reaction pathway, in which CH 4 activation is likely to occur on Co sites, while CO 2 is activated on defect-rich CeO 2 surfaces to form carbonate/formate species that may participate in carbon removal. Overall, this work establishes a structure-performance correlation between CeO 2 morphology and catalytic behavior, providing insights into the design of Co-based catalysts for low-temperature DRM.

Synergy of surface oxygen vacancies and built-in electric field in 0D/2D CeO2/SnSe2 S-scheme heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic malachite green degradation

Luo Yan,Cheng Fangfang,Han Lin,Sun Zhiwang,Wang Yingxu,Zhong Hong,Wang Shifeng

Industrial wastewater causes serious water pollution, so it is urgent to remove toxic dyes like malachite green (MG). In this study, a 0D/2D S-scheme heterojunction was constructed by anchoring CeO 2 nanocubes onto SnSe 2 hexagonal nanosheets via a precisely controlled two-step hydrothermal strategy. In-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis corroborates that illumination triggers the proliferation of surface oxygen vacancies. These photo-induced oxygen vacancies (OVs, oxygen vacancies) empower the CeO 2 /SnSe 2 heterostructure to sustain exceptional catalytic activity over five consecutive cycles. Moreover, the optimized 0.2 g CeO 2 /SnSe 2 composite exhibits a remarkable degradation efficiency of 100% for MG within 30 min. Such performance enhancement is attributed to the synergy between the 0D/2D dimensional matching and a potent internal electric field (IEF), which triggers an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism to preserve high redox potential while accelerating carrier separation. This work provides a sophisticated blueprint for designing dimension-matched S-scheme heterojunctions for high-performance environmental remediation.

Synergistic promoting catalysis for DMC synthesis from CO2 with methanol via effect of ethanol on reconstructed CeO2/beta surface to balance acid-base properties

Yulin Cai,Qiao Han,Baochi Zhou,Lijun Wang,Na Sun,Yujia Wang,Zhanxu Yang

The direct conversion of CO 2 with methanol into dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has received considerable attention as the sustainable development process for conventional routes. The CeO 2 -based catalysts owing to suitable acid-base sites were regarded as the promising catalysts. However, the process has been hindered mainly due to the difficulty in simultaneously regulating the appropriate acid-base properties on CeO 2 -based catalysts, as well as thermodynamic limitations of generating by-product water. In this work, by virtue of enhancing interaction between active components and supports, the highly efficient CeO 2 /Beta catalysts (CeO 2 /Beta-E) were prepared by ethanol as impregnation solvents to DMC synthesis. Meanwhile, the synergistic promoting catalytic systems of DMC synthesis from CO 2 with methanol was proposed. On one hand, the content and electronic properties of oxygen vacancies and Ce 3 + species were regulated to achieve the balance between suitable acid and base sites by ethanol as impregnation solvents. Furthermore, the desired intermediates of bidentate carbonates derived from activated CO 2 on oxygen vacancies and consecutive methoxy species originated from methanol on Ce 3+ species could be markedly promoted by reconstructed surface acid-base properties of CeO 2 /Beta catalysts. Notably, methanol could be rapidly converted to intermediate species over CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts, which was the crucial step for activation. On the other hand, it was revealed the nature of continuous removal of by-product water into the reaction solution phase to enhance thermodynamic driving forces over CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts. Consequently, CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts delivered a DMC yield of 38.4 mmol/g with > 99 % selectivity and excellent cycling stability, providing theoretical insights and practical guidance for designing efficient catalysts for DMC synthesis from CO 2 with methanol.

Ni-phyllosilicate nanotubes coated by CeO2 for ultra-efficiency of 36.9% and near-limit CO2 conversion  in solar-driven conversion of CO2-to-fuel

Hang Shi,Cheng Tian,Xianglei Liu,Nan Sun,Chao Song,Hangbin Zheng,Ke Gao,Xinrui Wang,Zhixing Jiang,Yimin Xuan,Yulong Ding

Solar-driven CO 2 reduction by methane (CRM) into valuable syngas not only mitigates greenhouse gases but also provides high-value syngas. However, it is still a daunting challenge to achieve high solar-to-fuel efficiency and good durability simultaneously. Here, a novel strategy of direct photothermocatalytic CO 2 is proposed based on a unique nanocomposite of ceria coated Ni-phyllosilicate nanotubes (Ni-psnts@CeO 2 ). A record-high solar-to-fuel efficiency (36.9 %) with very high production rates of H 2 and CO (120.90 and 136.84 mmol g cat  min −1 ) and high CO 2 conversion rate (90.4 %) close to thermodynamic limit are demonstrated. Excellent long-term durability is achieved due to its extremely low carbon deposition rate of 1.3 × 10 −4  g c  g cat  h −1 under focused UV–vis-IR irradiation for 100 h. These high performances are partially attributed to the active involving of lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancies from ceria in carbon gasification and CO 2 activation, which are confirmed by 18 O isotope labeling and In-situ DRIFTS measurements. In addition, decreased activation energy enabled via photoactivation effects from photoexcited hot electrons also benefits high activities under direct light illumination. This work offers novel approaches for highly efficient and stable solar-driven CO 2 -to-fuel conversion.

Electrochemical characterization and DNA sensing application of a sphere-like CeO2–ZrO2 and chitosan nanocomposite formed on a gold electrode by one-step electrodeposition

Qingxiang Wang,Feng Gao,Xuan Zhang,Bin Zhang,Shunxing Li,Zhengshui Hu,Fei Gao

A composite film that contained CeO 2 –ZrO 2 hollow nanospheres and chitosan was deposited on a gold electrode using a one-step electrodeposition based on the pH-dependent solubility of chitosan. Electrochemical characterization experiments showed that the electroactive surface of the modified electrode was significantly enhanced by the introduction of the CeO 2 –ZrO 2 nanospheres into the chitosan gel during electrodeposition . Furthermore, an electrochemical DNA biosensor was fabricated based on the synergistic affinity of CeO 2 –ZrO 2 and chitosan in the nanocomposite film to probe DNA . DNA hybridization assays suggested that the target DNA could be quantified over a wide dynamic range of 1.63   ×   10 −13   M–1.63   ×   10 −8   M with a detection limit of 1.0   ×   10 −13   M using methylene blue as an electrochemical indicator. This work describes a simple strategy for the preparation of a stable and conductive interface for electrochemical detection of DNA hybridization and opens a path for the application of CeO 2 –ZrO 2 nanospheres and chitosan in DNA electrochemical biosensing analysis.

Synergistic Ru–Ni Nanoparticles on Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich and Acidic CeO2 for Efficient Catalytic Hydrogenolysis of Lignin and Its Model Compounds under Mild Conditions

Fang-Jing Liu,Meng-Jie Wang,Shan-Shan Gao,Lei Xia,Yao Lu,Mei Zhong,Xiao Zhou,Xian-Yong Wei,Yun-Peng Zhao

A promising strategy for lignin valorization is catalytic hydrogenolysis (CH) of C–O or C–C bridging bonds over supported metal catalysts to produce aromatics. Herein, a bimetallic RuNi/CeO2 catalyst was developed via impregnation and evaluated for CH of alkali lignin and its model compounds. Comprehensive catalyst characterizations confirmed the strong synergistic Ru–Ni nanoparticles, abundant oxygen vacancies (Ov), and moderate-to-strong acid sites on RuNi/CeO2. It achieved 100% conversion of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) under mild conditions (100 °C and 1.5 MPa H2) with toluene and phenol as the main products, markedly outperforming monometallic counterparts. It also exhibited excellent performance for other α-O-4 and β-O-4 model compounds under moderate conditions of 180 °C and 0.5 MPa H2, affording aromatic monomers as the dominant products. Mechanistic studies indicated that RuNi/CeO2 cooperatively activates H2 and isopropanol to generate hydrogen radicals (H•) and protons (H+), facilitating selective cleavage of C–O bonds. Applied to alkali lignin, CH over the catalyst produced a 41.1 wt % lignin oil, with phenols constituting over 70% of the liquid products, underscoring its efficacy in real lignin conversion. This work provides an efficient and selective catalytic strategy for lignin valorization, contributing to the sustainable production of valuable aromatics in the biorefining industry.

Synergistic enhancement in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A by CeO2 and reduced graphene oxide co-modified TiO2 nanotube arrays in combination with Fenton oxidation

Qingxiang Zhou,An Xing,Jing Li,Danchen Zhao,Kuifu Zhao,Man Lei

Present study described a high performance and rapid degradation technique for bisphenol A under simulated solar light irradiation by photoelectrocatalytic degradation with CeO 2 and reduced graphene oxide co-modified TiO 2 nanotube arrays (RGO-CeO 2 -TNAs) in combination with Fenton reaction. In the photoelectrocatalytic system (PEC), CeO 2 and reduced graphene oxide co-modification significantly improved the degradation efficiency due to the synergistic effect of them. With the introduction of Fenton reaction , the expected further effective enhancement of degradation efficiency was achieved. Under the optimal condition, the degradation of BPA reached a high reaction rate constant of 0.0146   min −1 . In comparison, photoelectrocatalytic process exhibited higher degradation efficiency than that of photocatalytic-Fenton (PC-Fenton), electrocatalytic-Fenton (EC-Fenton) and Fenton processes. The stability and reusability of RGO-CeO 2 -TNAs was investigated and the results demonstrated that rarely decline of degradation efficiency was achieved and the degradation efficiencies of the repeated degradation experiments were all over 80% for ten runs. All these indicated that there was markedly synergistic enhancement effect between Fenton reaction and PEC process using RGO-CeO 2 -TNAs as the photoelectrode for degradation of bisphenol A. All these results indicated thatpresent method provided a potential powerful tool for the control and removal of bisphenol A and other pollutants in the future.

ATP and ssDNA aptamer-mediated peroxidase-like activity of rGO@PDA@CeO2 nanozyme: Exosomal proteins profiling and detection at physiological pH for colorimetric sensor

Jingjing Kuang,Shengli Ruan,Yangkun Sun,Zeyu Wu,Jiayao Xu,Ting Zhang,Xiaofan You,Shiman Yang,Min Zhang,Hongyang Zhang,Ping Hu

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles that inherit molecular markers from their parent cells for the transfer and delivery of membrane and cytosolic molecules between cells. Exosome detection and protein profiling provide noninvasive access to disease diagnosis and treatment. The nanozyme designed in this paper contains polydopamine-functionalization of graphene oxide (rGO@PDA) units that can adsorb ssDNA aptamers and CeO 2 metal oxide nanosheet units with peroxidase activity. As auxiliary regulator, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) enhances peroxidase activity of rGO@PDA@CeO 2 under a wide range of pH (4–7.4), which breaks through the limitation that traditional nanozymes can only exhibit peroxidase activity under acidic conditions. The ssDNA aptamers, which are recognition probes of exosome, can be adsorbed on the surface of rGO@PDA by aromatic stacking, competing with ATP molecules. Thus, the ssDNA aptamer acts as the switch for colorimetric sensor to flexibly regulate the peroxidase activity of the rGO@PDA@CeO 2 under physiological conditions , and realizes sensitive detection of exosomes. This assay achieves a detection linear range of 0.46 × 10 7 –10 8 particle/mL and a limit down to 3.81 × 10 5 particles/mL. In addition, this aptasensor sensitively profiles six exosomal protein across five cell types and clinical samples, suggesting their potential in clinic diagnosis.

Organic–Inorganic Composite Nanorods as an Excellent Mimicking Peroxidases for Colorimetric Detection and Evaluation of Antioxidant

Hao Liu,YanLei He,Ning Li,Zhenxue Liu,Xianxi Zhang,Xiao Zhang,Qingyun Liu

N,N′-Dicarboxy methyl perylene diimide-coated CeO2 nanorods (PDI/CeO2 NR) were synthesized via an ultrasonic-assisted method. PDI/CeO2 exhibits the superb mimic peroxidase functions confirmed by the catalyzed oxidation of TMB by hydrogen peroxide in less than 60 s along with color transformation from colorless to blue. The catalytic mechanism was confirmed to be an electronic transfer mechanism by fluorescence experiment. Thus, a visual colorimetric sensor was constructed for hydrogen peroxide detection with a low detection limit (LOD = 2.23 μM). Comparing the inhibition effects of l-cysteine (Cys), ascorbic acid (AA) and glutathione (GSH) on the catalytic oxidation of TMB, it can be found that they possessed different types of inhibition on the oxidation of TMB by H2O2 using PDI/CeO2, and AA has better antioxidant effect, followed by Cys and GSH. On the basis of the excellent antioxidant effect of AA, a low-cost colorimetric sensor was also used to detect AA, and a lower LOD value (0.68 μM) was obtained in the linear range of 5.0–30 μM.
