Dual-pathway glycolysis inhibition for boosting bioenergetic therapy synergistic with chemodynamic/photothermal therapy

Pengxin Song,Renlu Han,Yun Gao,Zhen Guo,Xiangjun Wei,Na Li,Jiancheng Yu,Keqi Tang

Energy is the basis of survival for all organisms, and proliferative tumuor cells rely primarily on glycolysis to obtain energy to meet high bioenergetic demands. Glycolysis inhibition has emerged as a key target for cancer therapeutic applications. However, the therapeutic efficiency of glycolysis suppression is restrained by the mutual compensation of multiple energy-generating pathways and biological barriers in the complex tumuor microenvironment (TME). In this study, we developed polydopamine (PDA)-coated porous CeO 2-x nanorods with metformin (MET) and glucose oxidase (GOx) co-loading and bovine serum albumin (BSA) encapsulation (denoted as CPGMB) for dual-pathway glycolysis inhibition-boosted bioenergetic therapy with photothermal/chemodynamic therapy (PTT/CDT). MET and GOx are released due to the weakly acidic TME and the photothermal effect to suppress glycolysis via hexokinase 2 (HK2) inhibition and glucose deprivation pathways, respectively. Interestingly, H 2 O 2 produced by GOx-catalysed glucose oxidation was converted into O 2 by Ce 4+ , resulting in closed-loop glucose depletion, further potentiating glycolysis restraint via hypoxia relief. Meanwhile, H 2 O 2 could also be transformed into •OH by Ce 3+ for CDT. Furthermore, the photothermal effect of CPGMB ablated the cancer cells and amplified •OH production. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed the anti-tumour efficacy and biosafety of CPGMB. This study presents a novel strategy for a synergistic bioenergetic antitumour therapy.

Cerium dioxide nanozyme doped hybrid hydrogel with antioxidant and antibacterial abilities for promoting diabetic wound healing

Shuhan Zhao,Junhong Ling,Nan Wang,Xiao–kun Ouyang

Diabetic wounds are among the most severe chronic complications in patients with diabetes. Owing to the detrimental effects of high glucose and high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the wound microenvironment, diabetic wound healing is significantly challenging. To address the issues of elevated ROS levels and infection susceptibility in diabetic wounds, we designed a composite hydrogel system loaded with cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) and vancomycin. This hydrogel aimed to reshape the wound microenvironment by continuously consuming ROS and inhibiting infection. Experimental results demonstrated that the CeO 2 NPs-loaded hydrogel demonstrated an 85.40% clearance rate of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and achieved over 90% inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( P. aeruginosa ), and effectively promoted the healing of diabetic mouse wounds. This cerium dioxide nanozyme hybrid hydrogel system can exert antioxidative and antibacterial effects and serve as a wound dressing to promote the healing of infected diabetic wounds.

Boosted low-temperature C3H8 oxidation and sulfur resistance of Pt/CeO2 via post Co3(PO4)2 modification: Synergy of interfacial electronic modulation and phosphate-derived acidity

He Xu,Xinyu Wang,Jingjing Wang,Jingyao Wang,Yujie Liu,Lianghui Xia,Yingying Yong,Yanfei Jian,Reem Albilali,Chi He

The widely presented industrial light alkanes (LAs) have posed significant hazards to the environment and human health; however, the efficacious catalytic purification of LAs is still greatly suffered from their strong chemical stability and catalyst deactivation due to the presence of sulfur-containing impurity in practical exhausts. Herein, cobalt phosphate (Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 )-modified Pt/CeO 2 catalysts (Pt/CeO 2 - x CP) with boosted activity and sulfur resistance were rationally engineered. Results revealed that Pt/CeO 2 -0.2CP shows the highest C 3 H 8 oxidation activity with 90 % of which oxidized at 260 °C and apparent activation energy ( E a ) of 84.39 kJ∙mol −1 , obviously lower than that of Pt/CeO 2 . Remarkably, the activity of Pt/CeO 2 -0.2CP is well-maintained in 24 h of successive operation with the co-existence of 250 H 2 S, while over 20 % of C 3 H 8 conversion reduction can be found over Pt/CeO 2 due to the deactivation of Pt 4+ active sites by surface sulfation. The Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -Pt interface promotes the electron transfer from Pt δ+ to phosphorus component and weakens the Pt-O-Ce bond, thereby generating more highly active Pt 4+ sites and oxygen vacancy, polarizing the electron cloud around the C-H bond and oxygen molecules and promoting C 3 H 8 oxidation. Meanwhile, the Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 modification optimizes the surface acidity of Pt/CeO 2 -CP, effectively weakens the adsorption and oxidation of H 2 S, and maintains the formation and consumption of high active oxygen species, resulting in strong sulfur resistance. This work provides important insights for the rational design of efficient sulfur-tolerant catalysts towards LAs purification under harsh conditions.

Photothermal catalytic synthesis of DMC from CO2 and CH3OH at atmospheric pressure: Synergistic effect of surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies on spindle-like CeO2-x

Guoqiang Zhang,Xiya Zhao,Xiushuai Guan,Xiaokun Wang,Xiaoyang Wang,Xiaochao Zhang

The light-driven conversion of CO 2 to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) represents a promising green and sustainable pathway for achieving dual-carbon goals. However, the inherent difficulty in activating CO 2 molecules results in low DMC yields when synthesizing DMC from CO 2 and methanol (CH 3 OH) under light-driven conditions. In this study, the activation of CO 2 and CH 3 OH is enhanced by modulating the number of hydroxyl groups and the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the surface of spindle-like CeO 2-x through the introduction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Photothermal catalytic experiments show that the optimal CTAB-modified CeO 2-x achieves excellent DMC yield of 5.26 mmol·g −1 under mild conditions (0.1 MPa, 120℃). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption results demonstrate that CTAB modification increases the number of hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies on the CeO 2-x surface, which improves the effective activation of CO 2 to form the reactive intermediates such as *HCO 3 – and *CO 2 . Notably, the increased hydroxyl groups promote the dissociation of CH 3 OH into *CH 3 O. Meanwhile, isotopic labeling and in situ infrared characterization confirm the light-driven reaction pathway of CO 2 and CH 3 OH, involving the oxidation of CH 3 OH to *CH 2 OH via photogenerated holes, followed by rapid coupling with *CO 2 to generate the reactive intermediate (CH 3 OCOO*). These findings provide new insights into the rational design and construction of CeO 2 -based catalysts to achieve high yields of DMC under mild conditions.

Ce3+ self-doping CeO2-x@CuO nanowires arrays on copper mesh at the gas-liquid interface: Enhanced performance of reducing CO2 to methanol under visible light

Cheng Zuo,Xishi Tai,Qian Su

S-scheme heterojunction can accelerate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and retain strong redox ability, so it has outstanding advantages and application prospects in the field of photocatalysis . The Ce 3+ self-doping CeO 2-x @CuO nanowires arrays on copper mesh were synthesized with the strategy of surface hydrogenation and hydrothermal calcination method. The morphology, composition and properties of the catalysts were determined by SEM, TEM, EDS , UV-VIS, PL , CO 2 -TPD and other characterization methods. Ce 3+ self-doping introduces O vacancies on the surface of CeO 2 without introducing heteroatoms. The O vacancies of CeO 2-x could enhance the adsorption, activation and reduction of CO 2 . The existence of coaxial S-scheme heterojunctions could effectively enhance the light absorption range and the separation of photo-generated charges. The photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst was much higher than that of pure CuO/copper mesh (CM) and CeO 2 , and the difference in activity of catalysts composed of different proportions was studied. When the Ce 3+ self-doping CeO 2-x loading was moderate, the methanol yield reached 6.73 μmol·g cat −1 after 4 h reaction under visible light , which is 5.26 times of CuO/CM and 9.35 times of CeO 2 . The reduction mechanism of the composite catalyst at the gas-liquid interface was studied. This work demonstrates a feasible strategy to create efficient S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts with rich active surface O vacancies for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

ZIF-derived porous carbon loaded multicomponent heterostructured yolk@shell nanospheres as an ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of caffeic acid in food

Yaqi Yang,Jiejun Li,Yilin Wang,Zhifang Liu,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Xiayi Hu,Junjie Fei

Multicomponent heterogeneous structures of yolk@shell nanospheres embedded in MOF-derived porous carbon are potentially excellent electrocatalytic materials. In this work, the multicomponent yolk@shell nanospheres (Au@Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 ) were synthesized through an autocatalytic redox reaction. The synergistic and interfacial effects between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 can expose more active sites and enhance the catalytic activity. Then, the electrical conductivity of Au@Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 was improved using N-doped carbon nanomaterials (NPC), which was derived from ZIF-8 by high-temperature pyrolysis. The synergistic catalytic effect between ZIF-8 derived NPC and Au@Co 3 O 4 @CeO 2 resulted in the highest electrochemical response current to caffeic acid in this composite. Under optimal conditions, the prepared modified electrode showed a LOD (limit of detection) of 5.7 × 10 −10 M for CA and a linear range of 1.0 × 10 −9 to 3.0 × 10 −6 M. Meanwhile, it showed remarkable selectivity for CA in the anti-interference experiments and can be applied to the detection in food samples (strawberry and red wine). This work has developed a novel sensing material for sensitive detection of CA, broadening the application of multi-component shell-core structured metal oxidation.

Generating active metal/oxide reverse interfaces through coordinated migration of single atoms

Zhang Lina,Wan Shaolong,Du Congcong,Wan Qiang,Pham Hien,Zhao Jiafei,Ding Xingyu,Wei Diye,Zhao Wei,Li Jiwei,Zheng Yanping,Xie Hui,Zhang Hua,Chen Mingshu,Zhang Kelvin H. L.,Wang Shuai,Lin Jingdong,Huang Jianyu,Lin Sen,Wang Yong,Datye Abhaya K.,Wang Ye,Xiong Haifeng

Identification of active sites in catalytic materials is important and helps establish approaches to the precise design of catalysts for achieving high reactivity. Generally, active sites of conventional heterogeneous catalysts can be single atom, nanoparticle or a metal/oxide interface. Herein, we report that metal/oxide reverse interfaces can also be active sites which are created from the coordinated migration of metal and oxide atoms. As an example, a Pd 1 /CeO 2 single-atom catalyst prepared via atom trapping, which is otherwise inactive at 30 °C, is able to completely oxidize formaldehyde after steam treatment. The enhanced reactivity is due to the formation of a Ce 2 O 3 -Pd nanoparticle domain interface, which is generated by the migration of both Ce and Pd atoms on the atom-trapped Pd 1 /CeO 2 catalyst during steam treatment. We show that the generation of metal oxide-metal interfaces can be achieved in other heterogeneous catalysts due to the coordinated mobility of metal and oxide atoms, demonstrating the formation of a new active interface when using metal single-atom material as catalyst precursor.

Catalytic in-situ hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran over Cu-based catalysts with methanol as a hydrogen donor

Zihao Zhang,Changxue Wang,Xin Gou,Hao Chen,Kequan Chen,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

A series of Cu-based catalysts with different supports were synthesized and studied for the in situ hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to dimethylfuran (DMF) using methanol as an economical hydrogen donor. The structures and properties of the four catalysts (Cu/Al 2 O 3 , Cu/ZnO, Cu/ZrO 2 , and Cu/CeO 2 ) were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD). The experimental results showed that the use of different supports for the Cu-based catalysts significantly influenced their activity for both H 2 production from methanol and hydrogenation of 5-HMF. The catalyst Cu/Al 2 O 3 showed the best catalytic activity, which can be attributed to the highest activity for the in situ H 2 production from methanol, smallest Cu crystallite size, and strongest acidity. The effects of the substrate concentration, catalyst loading, and reaction temperature and time on the in situ hydrogenation of 5-HMF were systematically investigated to determine the optimum reaction conditions.

Post-modified porous hollow nanospheres incorporating multiple strategies for comprehensive phosphoproteomics analysis of serum of Alzheimer's disease

Jianglong Du,Haihua Tian,Mengyao Fu,Yinghua Yan,Chuang Wang,Chuan-Fan Ding

Alzheimer's disease (AD), as a neurodegenerative disease, has become a major disease threatening the physical and mental health of the elderly. In order to find potential cost-effective and valuable AD biomarkers from human serum, we developed and designed a post-modified functional nanomaterial denoted as H–CeO 2 @PEI-Ti with a porous hollow structure modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and Ti 4+ . This post-modified porous hollow nanomaterial integrated multiple enrichment strategies, including immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC) and metal oxide affinity chromatography (MOAC) with electrostatic interaction synergy and hydrogen bond assistance was applied to the phosphoproteomics for the first time. The experimental results demonstrated good performance in the enrichment of standard phosphoprotein tryptic digests, such as extremely low detection limit (0.02 fmol), excellent selectivity (1:5000 M ratio of β-casein and BSA), given that the large specific surface area created by the special porous hollow structure. In serum analyses, 49 phosphopeptides corresponding to 31 phosphoproteins were identified in the serum of the normal controls, and 49 phosphopeptides corresponding to 32 phosphoproteins in AD patients. More importantly, some functional items based on Gene Ontology (GO) analysis after enrichment for human serum supported the molecular biological processes that may be related to the pathogenesis of AD, including copper ion binding, heparin binding and retinoid metabolism.

Built–in electric field and atomic–level interfacial channels synergistically drive Type–I to Type–II transition and directed carrier separation in 2D/2D CeO2/SnSe heterojunction

Xiangchen Kong,Xuyang Dong,Shijie Hong,Kaiyue Wang,Yuming Tian

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is a key approach to addressing the energy crisis. However, Type-I heterojunctions are limited by issues such as low photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, weak intrinsic electric fields at the interface, and a scarcity of active sites on the surface. To address these issues, this study proposes a synergistic strategy combining “interface electric field engineering” and “surface molecular engineering”: A 2D/2D CeO 2 /SnSe heterojunction is first constructed via a stepwise hydrothermal method. Subsequently, ammonium hexachlorostannate(IV) ([SnCl 6 ] 2- ) is introduced onto the heterojunction surface via electrostatic adsorption. After subsequent drying, these complexes undergo conversion to form Sn-O-Ce bonds at the interface, achieving “molecular welding” and enhancing interfacial coupling. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirm the successful establishment of the built-in interfacial electric field. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that this built-in electric field drives photogenerated electrons from SnSe across the interface and into the more negative conduction band of CeO 2 , enabling the composite material, which originally exhibited Type-I band alignment, to achieve a Type-II-like charge separation pathway under illumination. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution tests indicate that the hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized material has increased twenty-fold. This work provides both experimental and theoretical grounds for the regulation of the band structure of heterojunctions through interfacial chemical engineering, as well as for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts. Engineering built-in electric fields in oxygen-deficient MnO-CeO2@Cs catalysts: enhanced performance and kinetics for the oxygen reduction reaction in aqueous/flexible zinc–air batteries

Lixia Wang,Xinran Hu,Huatong Li,Zhiyang Huang,Jia Huang,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Deliberate engineering of built-in electric fields (BEFs) can facilitate electron transfer and promote asymmetrical charge distribution, thereby regulating the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates. Herein, an oxygen-deficiency-rich MnO-CeO2 is synthetized supported on a carbon sphere (MnO-CeO2@Cs), adeptly crafted with a prominent work function difference (ΔΦ) and robust BEF, targeting the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Empirical and theoretical results substantiate that the BEF triggers interfacial charge redistribution, fine-tuning the adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates and hastening reaction kinetics. Consequently, the MnO-CeO2@Cs showcases commendable performance (E1/2 = 0.80 V and jL = 5.5 mA cm−2), outshining its single-component counterparts. Impressively, the MnO-CeO2@Cs-based zinc–air batteries (ZABs) boast an exemplary power density of 202.7 mW cm−2 and enduring stability of 297 h. Additionally, the solid-state ZAB commands a peak power density of 67.4 mW cm−2, underscoring its potential in flexible ZAB applications. This work delineates a strategic avenue to harness interfacial charge redistribution, aiming to enhance the catalytic performance and longevity of energy conversion/storage apparatuses.

Siyuan Di,Jiahao Wang,Yixin Zhai,Pin Chen,Tao Ning,Chunxiang Shi,Hucheng Yang,Yue Bao,Qiang Gao,Shukui Zhu

A series of Co(II)-CeO 2 mixed metal oxides were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-calcination procedure for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrading toxic and difficult biodegradable organics. Co(II)-CeO 2 showed excellent degradation performance toward rhodamine B (RhB), toluidine blue, methylene blue and diclofenac. RhB is a refractory organic contaminant , and ecotoxicological evaluation unraveled its harmfulness to the biosphere. RhB was selected as the model pollutant to investigate catalytic mechanisms. Parameters affecting degradation performance were profoundly investigated, including Co:Ce feed ratio, initial pH, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, RhB concentration, coexisting ions and reaction temperature. Reaction mechanisms were proposed based on density functional theory calculations and identifications of reactive oxygen species . Improvements have been achieved in seven aspects compared to previous studies, including 100% degradation ratio in both real water samples and each reuse of the catalyst, ultrafast degradation rate, cost-effectiveness of the catalyst, toxicity-attenuation provided by the developed degradation method, high degree of mineralization for the model pollutant, negligible leaching of active sites, and the enhancement of catalytic performance by utilizing trace leached cobalt, endowing the technique with broad applicability and prospect.
