One-stop decomplexation of Cu-EDTA and Cu capture in rare earth purification wastewater using NdFeB waste/H2O2 system: Performance, mechanism, and application

Qingping Zhang,Yang Xu,Haiqing Hao,Zhongxiang Guan,Meng Wang,Zongyu Feng,Xiaowei Huang,Guang Yang,Chunmei Wang

Conventional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) face technological bottlenecks in the stepwise treatment of heavy metal complexes (HMCs), and single-step removal strategies have attracted increasing attention. Herein, we pioneered a waste-derived strategy using NdFeB waste (NFBW) to activate H 2 O 2 for establishing a heterogeneous Fenton-like system, achieving concurrent Cu-EDTA decomplexation and Cu capture. Remarkably, 99.10 % Cu-EDTA decomplexation and 96.84 % total Cu capture were synchronously achieved within 30 min. This one-step technology is effective over a wide pH range (2.0–9.5). Notably, this system demonstrated practical efficacy in treating rare-earth purification wastewater, achieving synchronous removal of heavy metals (Cu, Zn) and rare-earth elements (Yb, Ce) as mixed organic complexes with effluent meeting industrial discharge standards. Mechanistic investigations revealed that Cu-EDTA decomplexation originated from Fe(Ⅲ)-induced ligand substitution coupled with reactive oxygen species (·OH and ·O 2 - ) attack. The ≡Fe(Ⅱ)/≡Fe(Ⅲ)-mediated heterogeneous Fenton reaction synergized with homogeneous Fe(Ⅱ)/Fe(Ⅲ) cycling to generate ROSs, where the B-B bonds and Fe 0 in NFBW facilitated electron transfer for enhanced redox cycling. Possible pathways for the decomplexation of Cu-EDTA in this system are proposed. The 90.10 % TOC removal verified EDTA mineralization through stepwise degradation pathways. Liberated Cu(Ⅱ) was captured via multiple routes: surface reduction (Cu 0 ), precipitation (Cu(OH) 2 , Cu 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 ), and Fe(OH) 3 adsorption-flocculation. This work not only opens new avenues for Fenton-like treatment of HMC wastewater through a “waste-treats-waste” strategy but also provides new ideas for synergistic activation of H 2 O 2 by multivalent iron materials.

Establishing g-C3N4-Vn/FeIn2S4 heterostructure for in-situ H2O2 generation and activation to degrade tetracycline in photo-Fenton process under visible light

Rui Han,Yuwei Yao,Tadayuki Fujii,Yasushi Iseri,Xiaobiao Zhu

The heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst has attracted much interest in wastewater remediation applications. Herein, a heterostructure (CN-Vn/FIS) between ternary chalcogenide compound (FIS) and graphitic carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies (CN-Vn) was synthesized via hydrothermal reaction to in-situ generate H 2 O 2 under visible light and degrade tetracycline (TC) in water. CN-Vn/FIS could achieve as high as 98.5 % TC removal efficiency which maintained at 82.3 % in the fifth recycle, and was effective in the pH range of 2.6–9.0. The optical experiment suggested that CN-Vn/FIS demonstrates a broader light absorption edge as well as a low electron transfer energy barrier. Additionally, free radical trapping and EPR experiments proved that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played a prominent role in the photo-Fenton process, while competitive reaction kinetic analysis calculated 1 O 2 contributed to 89.7 % TC degradation in CN-Vn/FIS system, which is nearly 3 times higher than 31.5 % in CN system. The results showed that CN-Vn/FIS created a one-step pathway to generate H 2 O 2 without the aid of the intermediate free radical •O 2 − . This study illustrated an efficient and green TC degradation alternative through photo-Fenton process catalyzed by CN-Vn/FIS under visible light.

Amino-Functionalized Iron-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks Anchored on Aminated Carbon Nanotubes for Selective Two-Electron Oxygen Reduction Reaction toward Efficient H2O2 Electrosynthesis

Xia Li,Yuchen Yao,Zhiyuan Sang,Shengji Zhu,Jingjing Jia,Ting Lv,Weibing Ma,Min Peng,Ji Liang

The electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) is a promising method with the advantages of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. However, the process is constrained by the low selectivity and catalytic activity of the catalysts. In this study, the amino-functionalized iron-based metal–organic frameworks anchored on aminated carbon nanotubes (Fe-BDC@CNT-NH2) are prepared as 2e– ORR catalysts to enhance H2O2 production. In this catalyst system: (1) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were designed to improve the overall electron conductivity of the catalyst; (2) −NH2 groups in benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (BDC) could modulate the intrinsic electron conductivity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs); and (3) −NH2 groups on the CNT surface facilitated the anchoring and confinement of MOF growth by forming axial coordination structures (Fe–NO4). Smaller particles expose more active sites, while axial coordination structure enhances the adsorption capacity of Fe centers, effectively passivating Fe centers and optimizing the 2e– ORR performance at adjacent C sites. Thus, Fe-BDC@CNT-NH2 possesses high 2e– ORR selectivity and activity, under both alkaline and neutral conditions. For example, Fe-BDC@CNT-NH2 demonstrates a H2O2 average yield of 24 mol gcat–1 h–1 and maintains a Faraday efficiency (FE) > 80% over 12 h in alkaline. Against neutral conditions, it also exhibits approximately 84% selectivity and stability lasting up to 12 h. Especially, a large current of 1.0 A can be achieved under a 5 × 5 cm2 flow cell, thus endowing the electro-synthesized H2O2 with excellent dye degradation performance and broad application prospects.

Cu-doped hollow tubular ZnIn2S4 using MIL-68-NH2 as templates for efficient photocatalytic synthesis of H2O2 in ambient air and pure water

Chen Chen,Jianhao Qiu,Guanglu Xia,Lu Zhang,Yixin Li,Biyao Fang,Meng Liu,Jianfeng Yao

Utilizing metal–organic frameworks as templates to synthesize photocatalysts has garnered increasing attention thanks to their substantial advantages. In this study, Cu-doped ZnIn 2 S 4 with hollow tubular structures was ingeniously synthesized using MIL-68-NH 2 as a template for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production in ambient air and pure water under visible light. The hollow tubular structures promote light penetration and reflection, furnish substantial accessible reactive sites and accelerate the diffusion of reactants and products. Cu doping notably varies the band configuration of ZnIn 2 S 4 , resulting in a narrower bandgap and a lower conduction band potential. Their cooperative effects enable a respectable H 2 O 2 production from oxygen reduction reactions. The hollow tubular ZnIn 2 S 4 and corresponding Cu-doped counterpart achieved high H 2 O 2 yields of 1153 and 1616 μmol·L −1 , respectively, 3.6 and 5.1 times-increase compared with that of ordinary ZnIn 2 S 4 prepared without MIL-68-NH 2 . This work would provide a new perspective on ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts and provoke the study on the green synthesis of H 2 O 2 .

Functional group-directed electron shuttling by adsorbed humic acid exciting nontarget reactions and their enhancement non-radical oxidation in H2O2-based aquifer remediation

Peng Wang,Pei An,Chenlong Wang,Zhaoyu Chen,Chenglong Yu,Wen Zhang,Shengyan Pu

Nontarget reactions (NTRs) have long been considered a major barrier to the efficiency and sustainability of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) in contaminated aquifers. Here, we report a paradigm-shifting discovery on the dual role of ubiquitous subsurface components, clay minerals and humic acid (HA), in H 2 O 2 -based remediation. We demonstrate through controlled experiments that HA adsorbed onto montmorillonite (MT) enhances dimethyl phthalate (DMP) removal by 18.3–125.6 % compared to systems containing only clay or HA. Contrary to the conventional view of NTRs as parasitic scavengers of reactive oxygen species, they also promote the generation of target hydroxyl radicals (∙OH), as directly verified by quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy. Electrochemical analyses confirm that HA mediates direct electron transfer (DET) between MT and H 2 O 2 , leading to interfacial ∙OH formation. The electron-shuttling efficiency of HA is governed by its molecular structure, with electron-donating groups (e.g., para-OH, enediols) maximizing DET efficacy, as quantified by Hammett correlations ( R 2 >0.90). The improved interfacial reaction diffusion model further reveals that ∙OH-mediated reactions are free from diffusion limitations ( η =0.999) and confined to the solid-liquid interface (<200 nm), where non-radical pathways dominate. Our findings redefine NTRs as tunable interfacial processes and establish a mechanistic basis for leveraging their beneficial role in next-generation sustainable aquifer remediation.

Novel zero-valent copper/CuS heterojunction catalyst with sulfur vacancies for efficient removal of 17β-estradiol via on-site H2O2 generation and activation

Yifang Wu,Jianwang Wu,Mei Lin,Zuliang Chen

Zero-valent metal catalysts are capable of generating hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) through oxygen activation. However, their sensitivity to pH and tendency toward surface passivation considerably restrict practical applications. In this study, a ZVC/CuS heterojunction catalyst with sulfur vacancies was successfully fabricated via the hydrothermal method. The catalyst leveraged the synergistic effect between sulfur vacancies and lattice sulfur to first mediate oxygen adsorption on its surface, enabling efficient on-site H 2 O 2 generation and activation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that *OOH served as the key intermediate in the H 2 O 2 formation pathway. Under neutral conditions, the ZVC/CuS self-Fenton system enabled complete (100 %) removal of 17β-estradiol (E2). Electrochemical analyses revealed that the current density of ZVC/CuS was 2.1 times higher than that of ZVC, indicating a substantial enhancement in redox activity. DFT, Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis combined with toxicity assessments were collectively employed to deduce the degradation pathways of E2, confirmed that the toxicity of the degradation products was significantly reduced compared to the original pollutants. Importantly, comprehensive experiments under various conditions consistently demonstrated high efficiency in removing pollutants, highlighting the practical potential of ZVC/CuS. This study not only provides a novel strategy to overcome the instability of ZVC but also establishes a highly efficient self-Fenton-like catalytic system that does not require exogenous oxidants.

A NIR Dual-Channel Fluorescent Probe for Fluctuations of Intracellular Polarity and H2O2 and Its Applications for the Visualization of Inflammation and Ferroptosis

Xing Tian,Jiayi Cheng,Lei Yang,Zhanxian Li,Mingming Yu

Hydrogen peroxide and polarity are closely related to many physiological activities and pathological processes. However, near-infrared fluorescent probes that are sensitive to both H2O2 and polarity are still scarce. Herein, we developed the first dual-channel near-infrared fluorescent probe NBO, with an AIE effect, enabling simultaneous monitoring of H2O2 and polarity. The probe presented high sensitivity, high selectivity, and low detection limit for H2O2. It also had high sensitivity to polarity, independent of pH and viscosity, with large Stokes shifts, good photostability, and low cytotoxicity. Moreover, NBO was able to detect both endogenous and exogenous H2O2 as well as polarity fluctuations in vivo as a method to effectively differentiate between cancer cells and normal cells. Importantly, it also could monitor the therapeutic effects of drugs in inflammation and iron-dead cells and mice. Based on NIR emission, NBO could be used as an imaging tool and a way to evaluate the therapeutic effect of drugs for inflammation and ferroptosis.

Enhancement of H2O2 decomposition efficiency by the co-catalytic effect of iron phosphide on the Fenton reaction for the degradation of methylene blue

Can Ma,Shuo Feng,Jinming Zhou,Rufen Chen,Yu Wei,Hui Liu,Sen Wang

The greatest problem in the homogeneous Fenton reaction is the low production of HO owing to the slow Fe III /Fe II cycle. In this study, we demonstrate a new co-catalyst of FeP and trace Fe 2+ that can greatly enhance the decomposition efficiency of H 2 O 2 and accelerate the degradation of methylene blue (MB). This co-catalyst is applicable in a broad pH range (pH = 3.0−9.0) and capable of degrading 95.74% and 89.01% of MB with 100 ppm in concentration within 30 s at pH 3 and 5, and 99.65% and 90.06% within 3 min at pH 7 and 9. The coexistence of FeP with Fe II accelerates the Fe III /Fe II cycle by electron transfer between Fe δ+ in FeP and Fe III . Mössbauer spectra and density functional theory calculations indicate that the unique structure of FeP plays an important role in accelerating the Fe III /Fe II cycle.

Oxygen-vacancy-mediated enhanced electron–proton transfer in 2D/2D Ce,Er–BiVO4-based metal–organic framework heterostructures for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production

Imran Khan,Hussain Sawwan,Khaled Alsaikhan,Atef El Jery,Kanwal Iqbal,Anam Iqbal,Olajire S. Olanrele

The limited efficiency of water oxidation is a significant challenge in the photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) without sacrificial agents. Among the different water oxidation reactions, the two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e− WOR) stands out as a promising route for direct H 2 O 2 generation, owing to its favorable kinetics. However, strategies to effectively activate 2e − WOR remain underdeveloped. In this work, we employ a molecular engineering approach to achieve a high density of oxygen vacancy sites on the surface of BiVO 4 (Ov-BiVO 4 ). These vacancies promote favorable interactions with the oxygen-rich ligands of MIL-101 through electrostatic self-assembly, resulting in enhanced growth and reduced formation energy of the material. The optimized photocatalyst demonstrates a remarkable initial photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production rate of 4550.4 μmol g −1  h −1 in pure water, a 38-fold increase compared to the unmodified BiVO 4 . Additionally, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) reaches 12.35% at 420 nm. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies, the incorporation of rare earth bimetallic centers, and the Z-scheme heterojunction, all of which facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Notably, the unsaturated coordination sites of Ce and Er efficiently promote O 2 adsorption and activate the 2e − oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway, crucial for efficient H 2 O 2 production. MIL-101 further improves the water oxidation reaction, optimizing the redox reaction matching within the system. This work introduces a straightforward molecular engineering method for dual-atom anchoring with tailored coordination environments, emphasizing the importance of redox dual-regulation for achieving efficient H 2 O 2 synthesis.

Hyaluronic acid-modified iron-based nanoparticles with Fe/ H2O2 supply and GSH depletion capabilities to improve breast cancer therapy via induction of ferroptosis

Chudong He,Yuanyuan Zhao,Mengdie Mo,Yuhong Su,Zhongquan Qi,Xiao Dong Chen,Weijie Zhou,Fei Yu

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent programmed cell death modality characterized by the massive accumulation of lipid peroxides (LPO). However, the efficiency of ferroptosis is commonly limited by insufficient supply of iron ions and endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the tumor cells. To overcome these drawbacks, MIL-100 NPs were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method to encapsulate β-lapachone (Lap), followed with the hyaluronic acid (HA) surface modification (designated as LMH NPs). LMH NPs exhibited GSH-responsive degradation in the tumor cells to release Lap and Fe 3+ . The released of Lap could generate H 2 O 2 via catalysis by tumor-overexpressed quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), leading to increased intracellular H 2 O 2 levels. The abundant production of H 2 O 2 could supply substrates for Fe 2+ -mediated Fenton reactions to produce toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH), thereby promoting LPO accumulation and enhancing ferroptosis. Meanwhile, Fe 3 ⁺ released from LMH NPs was reduced to Fe 2+ through GSH consumption, which could diminish glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) activity. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that LMH NPs possessed effective targeted uptake and exhibited optimal tumor inhibition without significant toxic side effects. Overall, the integrated strategy presents a novel ferroptosis-based clinical approach for enhanced breast cancer therapy. Scheme 1 Preparation process and antitumor mechanisms of LMH NPs. A H2O2-free electrochemiluminescence immunosensor constructed on all-in-one bioprobe comprised of TiO2-B supported fluoro-coumarin silicon phthalocyanine for deoxynivalenol sensing

Dandan Fang,Xiangqin Zheng,Huan Yi,Hong Dai,Zhensheng Hong,Yiru Peng,Yanyu Lin

A highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was fabricated for the quantitative analysis of deoxynivalenol (DON) based on an effective all-in-one bioprobe that composed of TiO 2 -B with Fluoro-coumarin silicon phthalocyanine (F-couSiPc) and luminol. Herein, TiO 2 -B with large specific area was served as a favorable carrier, greatly increased the loading of enhancer F-couSiPc and luminophore luminol, resulting in the tremendous enhancement of ECL signal. Specifically, F-couSiPc as coreaction accelerator could facilitate the decomposition of dissolved O 2 to generate substantial reactive oxygen species (ROS) to participate in the ECL reaction of luminol. Additionally, the prepared PEDOT/HA@mp MnO 2 was employed as the sensing platform of biosensor, which can not only capture substantial antibody to improve the sensitivity, but also could expedite the electronic transmission rate to make the ECL intensity further amplified. Ultimately, the proposed immunosensor presented favorable performance for the determination of DON, such as high sensitivity, good stability, wide liner range (from 1.0*10 −6 ng/mL to 10 ng/mL) and a low detection limit of 3.3*10 -7 ng/mL.

Meng-Meng Liu,Shan-Hong Li,Dan-Dan Huang,Zhi-Wei Xu,Ya-Wei Wu,Yun Lei,Ai-Lin Liu

Diagnostic assays made of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices have become the focus of considerable attention in developing countries because of simplicity, low cost, user friendliness, and no requirement for complex equipment, which is suitable to point-of-care testing. Considering the intrinsic shortcomings of nature enzyme, synthesis of artificial peroxidase mimics possessing improved catalytic activities relative to native enzymes is of considerable interest for the development of highly sensitive and stable sensor. In this paper, water-soluble molybdenum oxide quantum dots (MoOx QDs) were developed as highly effective biomimetic catalysts which were prepared by a facile ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method. The resulted MoOx QDs displayed peroxidase-like activity with high sensitivity and specificity, and were constructed for efficient colorimetric quantitative detection of H 2 O 2 based on microfluidic paper-based device. As low as 0.175 μmol/L H 2 O 2 could be determined at a linear range from 1 to 20 μmol/L. Moreover, this biosensing device was successfully applied for visual detection of H 2 O 2 released from PC12 cells with the advantages of low cost, rapid response and portability, indicating that the designed sensor of H 2 O 2 has great potential in biotechnology and clinical diagnosis.
