A scalable and low-cost strategy is developed to fabricate a novel CuS/SiO2-based nanotherapeutic agent for dual-model imaging-guided photothermal/photodynamic combined therapy. In this design, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with CuS bundled in the channel are obtained in aqueous solution via in situ growth route for the first time. Furthermore, to achieve a more efficient therapy, photosensitizer (complex Ir-2) and bovine serum albumin are sequentially assembled via layer-by-layer method. The as-prepared complex Ir-2 presents a remarkably high 1O2 generation (ΦΔ = 1.3) under light illumination to offer effective photodynamic cell killing, and MSN/CuS exhibits high photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 31.7%) under illumination by 808 nm light to offer hyperthermia tumor ablation. In vitro and in vivo analyses show that the as-obtained nanotherapeutic agents exhibit excellent performance in tumor therapy even under irradiation with low power because of the high yield of 1O2 combined with the high photothermal conversion efficiency. Additionally, the nanotherapeutic agents are readily visualized in vivo via near-infrared fluorescence and thermal imaging. More importantly, based on the strategy of in situ growth and layer-by-layer assembly developed in this study, the development of other “all-in-one” multifunctional theranostic platform with high efficiency can be predictable.

A novel and environmentally benign approach was developed to create a Fe3O4@SiO2 core–shell structure supported Pd catalyst consisting of a superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanosphere core, a SiO2 shell with a rough surface, Pd nanoparticles deposited on a SiO2 shell, and a cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) layer. It was found that both adsorbed PVP and SiO2 shell with a rough surface from the surface-protected etching process were critical to obtain the uniform PdO deposition, while the cross-linked PVP layer could effectively anchor and protect active Pd nanoparticles to enhance their stability to resist detachment from the catalyst support and improve the reusability of the catalyst. Because of its superparamagnetic behavior, it could disperse well in aqueous solution without external magnetic field and be separated easily from aqueous solution when an external magnetic field was present. It demonstrated a high catalytic activity, desirable N2 product selectivity over 99.7%, and good reusability for the catalytic nitrite reduction in aqueous solution.

Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were first modified with tetraethoxylsilane to form Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 nanoparticles, followed by the addition of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 3-thiolpropyltriethoxysilane to introduce –NH 2 and –SH groups to the surface of Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles were further assembled on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 via the electrostatic adsorption of –NH 2 and the Au–S bond to produce stable core–shell Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /Au gold/magnetic nanoparticles. These Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /Au gold/magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by a variety of techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and afterwards conjugated with tetrodotoxin antibodies (Ab) and used as a Raman active substrate (Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /Au–Ab) with Rhodamine B (RhB)-labeled tetrodotoxin antibody as a Raman reporter (Ab–RhB). Upon mixing these reagents with tetrodotoxin (TTX), a sandwich complex [Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /Au–Ab···TTX···Ab–RhB] was generated due to the specific antibody–antigen interactions. The immunocomplex was subsequently separated by an externally applied magnetic source and concentrated into a pellet point, where the laser interrogation of the pellet produced a strong signal characteristic of RhB. The logarithmic intensity of the signal was found to be proportional to the concentration of TTX with a limit of detection of 0.01 μg/mL and a detection linearity range of ~ 0.01–0.5 μg/mL. The established method eliminates the complicated procedures of traditional centrifuging, column separation, and incubation and achieves a rapid detection of tetrodotoxin with improved detection sensitivity.

Mesoporous SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 supported Cr 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared by the sol–gel and impregnation methods. These catalysts were characterized and applied in cyclohexane nitrosation reaction. The effects of the preparation conditions and the catalyst deactivation were studied. The results show that 20% Cr 2 O 3 /SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 catalyst calcined at 400 °C exhibits not only the larger surface area, smaller particle size, but also the larger amount of Cr 2+ and Brønsted acid sites. These catalysts show good catalytic performances in the cyclohexane nitrosation to ε-caprolactam and could be recycled for several times in this reaction system for the first time. The catalyst of Cr 2 O 3 /SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 calcined at 400 °C gives 10.8% conversion with 79.9% selectivity to ε-caprolactam.

In this paper, the deactivation causes of the Pd/SiO 2 catalyst for continuous liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of 6,10,14-trimethylpentadeca-13-en-2-one in 2000 h of pilot plant test were systematically investigated by N 2 adsorption–desorption, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, experiments of CO poisoning and regeneration, and laboratory retests of the deactivated catalyst samples. The pore textures of Pd/SiO 2 catalysts were not destructed during the pilot test, while there were no obvious carbonaceous deposits appearing on the deactivated catalyst samples. The sintering and crystallization of Pd metal nanoparticles were found, which could be partially accountable for the deactivation of Pd/SiO 2 catalysts. Though Pd leaching did not take place in the pilot test, the Pd active phase could be slightly poisoned by sulfur impurities from feedstock hydrogen. Combining the results of CO poisoning and regeneration experiments with those of compositional analyses of fresh and circulating hydrogen in the pilot test, it could be concluded that CO poisoning should be another important reason for the deactivation of the Pd/SiO 2 catalyst due to high concentration of CO in the reaction system of pilot test and relatively low reaction temperature in the middle and at the bottom of the catalyst bed. Fortunately, the CO poisoned Pd/SiO 2 catalyst in the pilot test could be in situ regenerated by installing a purifier for CO elimination from the circulating hydrogen and increasing the temperature of the whole catalyst bed to slightly higher than 383 K.

A novel 1,8-naphthalimide-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core/shell magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles ( MFNPs ) for simultaneous detection and adsorption of Hg 2+ was designed and synthesized. A series of adsorption studies were carried out with various Hg 2+ concentrations, temperature, time and pH. The maximum adsorption capacity is higher than 30 mg/g over a broad temperature (0 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C) and pH (4–10). The results showed that MFNPs possesses an excellent reusability and the high adsorption specificity toward Hg 2+ . The detection limit for Hg 2+ is 3.4 nM. In addition, owing to the aggregation of MFNPs occurring in the Hg 2+ aqueous solution, the adsorbent was separated easily by the settlement or the external magnetic field, which facilitated the removal of Hg 2+ .

Here, a two-step method has been developed for synthesizing carboxy-terminated NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+@SiO2 core@shell nanoparticles (UCNP@SiO2) with ultrathin shell (1.5 nm). First, the NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared using solvothermal technology; then, silica shells (SiO2) were deposited on the nanocrystals to form core–shell structures by the hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The ultrathin SiO2 shell was obtained by increasing surfactant amount and decreasing TEOS amount in the reaction mixture. Carboxyethylsilanetriol (CTES) was used to generate the carboxy group on the particle surface. The carboxy-terminated UCNP@SiO2 are ideally suited for biolabeling and bioimaging applications because the as-prepared nanoparticles have extreme colloidal and optical stabilities, and the carboxy groups on the particle surface easily react with amino residues of biomolecules. As an example, we reported on the interactions of Ricinus Communis Agglutinin (RCA 120) conjugated UCNP@SiO2 with HeLa cells. The excellent performance of the RCA 120 conjugated UCNP@SiO2 in cellular fluorescence imaging was demonstrated.

Ru@SiO 2 core–shell structured nanospheres have been prepared via a one-pot synthetic route in a NP-5/cyclohexane reverse micelle system and characterized by XRD , SEM , TEM, N 2 adsorption–desorption, and H 2 temperature programmed desorption. The characterized results show that ultrafine Ru nanoparticles (NPs) of around 2 nm are effectively embedded in the center of well-proportioned spherical and porous silica nanospheres (∼25 nm in diameter). Interestingly, the number of Ru NPs increases inside the spherical particles of SiO 2 as the increase of Ru loading. The as-synthesized Ru@SiO 2 exhibits high catalytic activity and good durability for hydrogen generation from the aqueous of ammonia borane (AB) complex under ambient atmosphere at room temperature . The hydrolysis activation energy of Ru@SiO 2 was estimated to be about 38.2 kJ mol −1 , which is lower than most of the reported activation energy values for the same reaction using many different Ru-based and other noble metal containing catalysts, indicating the superior catalytic performance of these core–shell structured nanospheres.

In this work, three kinds of nanostructured silica–phytic acid (SiO2–PA) materials with diverse morphologies including spherical SiO2–PA (s-SiO2–PA), rod-like (r-SiO2–PA), and helical SiO2–PA (h-SiO2–PA) were prepared with the help of electrostatic interaction. The SiO2–PA nanomaterials with different morphologies were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and circular dichroism spectrum (CD). Diverse morphologies of SiO2–PA were used as electrode decorated materials to achieve a high efficiency for electrochemical dopamine (DA) detection. The laccase biosensors were fabricated by immobilizing different morphologies of SiO2–PA nanomaterials and laccase onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, successively. Then the electrochemical responses of the different morphologies of nanostructured SiO2–PA nanomaterials to laccase were discussed. Results indicated that compared to laccase/s-SiO2–PA and laccase/r-SiO2–PA, the laccase/h-SiO2–PA-modified electrode showed the best electrochemical performances.

In this paper, three grades of nano silicon dioxide (nano-SiO 2 ), NS1, NS2 and NS3, were mixed into paraffin to prepare nanocomposites as novel insulation materials for electronic passive thermal protection applications. The optimal mass percentages of paraffin for the three composites, NS1P, NS2P and NS3P, were determined to be 75%, 70% and 65%, respectively. Investigations by means of scanning electron micrographs (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), hot disk analyzer and thermal protection performance tests were devoted to the morphology, thermal properties and thermal protection performance analysis of composites. Experimental results showed that paraffin uniformly distributed into the pores and on the surface of nano-SiO 2 . Melting points of composites declined and experimental latent heat became lower than the calculated values with the decrease of nano-SiO 2 pore size. The NS1P composite had larger thermal storage capacity, better reliability and stability compared with NS2P and NS3P. In addition, compared with 90% wt.% paraffin/EG composite, the incorporation of NS1 (25 wt.%) into paraffin caused not only 63.2% reduction in thermal conductivity , but also 21.8% increase in thermal protection time affected by the ambient temperature. Thus those good properties confirmed that NS1P (75 wt.%) composite was a viable candidate for protecting electronic devices under high temperature environment.

In this study, a novel Pd(II) complex functionalized core–shell magnetic mesoporous catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 –Pd(II)) was synthesized by a simple cost effective procedure. It was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and nitrogen physical adsorption. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 –Pd(II) catalyst offered high surface area and exhibited excellent activity towards Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of halides with aryl boronic acids in ethanol in air. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 –Pd(II) catalyst was stable, reusable, and conveniently recovered by applying an external magnetic field. Moreover, it provided 91% conversion after the sixth catalytic run. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 –Pd(II) catalyst examined in this study combined both the efficiency of a homogeneous catalyst and the durability of a heterogeneous catalyst. The results revealed that the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @mSiO 2 –Pd(II) catalyst is promising as a candidate for various Pd-based catalytic applications.

A typical of network-like polyimide/silica composite microspheres with a high SiO 2 content was successfully prepared by a suspension polymerization method. The microstructure, morphology, surface composition and thermal property were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), respectively. The results showed that the size of PI/SiO 2 composite microspheres with 20–25 μm presented rough surface and an interpenetrating network had formed inside the spheres. The temperature of 5% weight loss was at about 503 °C, having higher thermal stability than pure PI.
