Amino-functionalized nanocomposites with a magnetic CoFe2O4 core and an amorphous SiO2 shell have been designed and synthesized. The core–shell structure was characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR and XPS. CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 with a high saturated magnetization (28.09 emu g−1) can be easily separated under a moderate external magnetic field within one minute. In addition, the adsorption capacity of the CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) was 170.829, 144.948 and 110.803 mg g−1, respectively. The removal efficiency was increased from 12 to 85% with an increase in the pH from 4 to 6.5. The adsorbent can be recycled for at least four cycles with a feasible removal efficiency (85.41%). The adsorption process was fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the data of the present investigation, CoFe2O4@SiO2–NH2 could find potential applications in heavy metal ion wastewater treatment.

The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the most challenging technical problem in water splitting. Here, we reported a new type of cauliflower-like NiCo 2 O 4 (CF-NiCo 2 O 4 ) film which was co-electrodeposited with silica for oxygen evolution reaction. Structure and morphology of the obtained films were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy . Electrochemical properties of the CF-NiCo 2 O 4 film were evaluated by quasi-steady state polarization curve , cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy . Results show that the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the CF-NiCo 2 O 4 film toward OER is a synergistic effect of improved intrinsic catalytic activity and increased surface area.

The formidable challenge of membrane fouling and wetting, spurred by the elevated concentration of pollutants in the landfill leachate concentrate during membrane distillation, necessitates substantial costs on membrane cleaning for retaining high separation efficiency. Herein, a durable superhydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane constructed by spray-coating of fluorinated SiO2 nanoparticles was proposed to treat landfill leachate concentrate via membrane distillation. The influence of operational parameters, including transmembrane temperature difference, feed flow rate, and feed salinity, on the membrane distillation performance was explored. Specifically, the increased transmembrane temperature difference and feed flow rate had a strongly positive dependence on the permeation flux during membrane distillation. The superhydrophobic PVDF membrane showed impressive antiwetting and antifouling properties, as indicated by consistently stable superhydrophobicity, obtaining an extremely high rejection of salts and humic substances (>99.99%) over an 8 h membrane distillation for treating landfill leachate concentrate. Furthermore, the tested superhydrophobic PVDF membrane yielded a complete solute removal, resulting in high-quality freshwater production with a 90.13% pure water recovery from landfill leachate concentrate during a 50 h membrane distillation-based concentration procedure with a concentration factor of 10.13. These results manifested the superhydrophobic PVDF membrane as a promising avenue for pure water production from complex waste streams via membrane distillation.

Flash sintering has been used to consolidate a wide range of ceramics and ceramic composites. However, flash sintering of ceramic nanocomposite with a substantial amorphous phase is rarely studied. Meanwhile, the effects of yttrium addition on the flash sintering behaviors and microstructures of ZrO 2 -based ceramic nanocomposite remain unknown. Herein, ZrO 2 -SiO 2 crystalline-amorphous ceramic nanocomposites (CACNs) with different contents of amorphous phase and two types of yttrium dopants were sintered by flash sintering. Results showed that the content of amorphous phase (SiO 2 ) had significant effects on the flash sintering behavior. The CACN with 65 mol% SiO 2 was nonflash sinterable due to the high electric resistivity of SiO 2 , whereas, the CACN with 45 mol% SiO 2 can be flash sintered to high densification within 35 seconds. The flash-sintered CACNs consisted of ZrO 2 nanocrystallites distributed in an amorphous SiO 2 matrix. Flash sintering enhanced the tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation of ZrO 2 . In addition, influences of yttrium dopant on CACNs were also investigated. Yttrium dopants can rapidly dissolve in ZrO 2 lattices and show a tetragonal phase stabilization effect during flash sintering. Firework-like ZrO 2 microcrystallites formed by dendritic growth were observed close to the cathode region, which was attributed to athermal electric field effects and the formation and aggregation of oxygen vacancies at the cathode region. The results would provide guidance for fabricating CACNs via flash sintering.

As a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material, 8 wt% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) exhibits poor resistance against calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicate (CMAS) corrosion. This is caused by the penetration of molten CMAS glass and the depletion of Y 3+ , which limits the lifetime of 8YSZ. In this study, a multi-rare-earth-oxide-doped zirconia (15 wt% (Lu 0.2 Yb 0.2 Dy 0.2 Gd 0.2 Y 0.2 )–ZrO 2 , denoted as 15LYDGY–SZ) ceramic was prepared to examine its interaction with CMAS. The sluggish diffusion effect and the competition between various dopant elements toward reaction with CMAS effectively slow down the atomic diffusion and limit the transformation of tetragonal phase into monoclinic phase in 15LYDGY–SZ ceramic. Compared with the currently used 8YSZ ceramic, the corrosion resistance of 15LYDGY–SZ to CMAS and its retention rate of fracture toughness after CMAS corrosion are improved. The results show that the multi-rare-earth-oxide-doped zirconia ceramic prepared in this study is a promising candidate material for the development of future TBCs.

Hydraulic fracturing has been proposed as a potential technology for the development of low-permeability oil reservoirs and also has promising application prospects offshore. In this study, a novel SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid was formulated. The fracturing fluid main agents, additives and reducing agents were screened. Besides, the physical and chemical properties (rheology) as well as application (i.e., sand-carrying, gel-breaking, dynamic fluid loss, dynamic damage and anti-swelling) performance of the proposed SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid were systematically investigated. It was revealed that 3.2 wt% AASB-17+1.92 wt% NaSal+0.1 wt% SC-107+0.1 wt% TS3 was the optimal SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based clean fracturing fluid system formula. The SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid exhibited remarkable rheological characteristics , the temperature and shear resistance was increased by 28 %, with a maximum temperature resistance of 90ºC. This system can be applied to the fracturing development of most oil reservoirs in the Bohai Bay. In addition, the presence of SiO 2 nanoparticles significantly improved the sand-carrying properties of the proposed clean fractuirng fluid system. The experimental results also suggested that the SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid showed excellent performance of shear recovery (fixed shear viscosity recovery rate was 100 %), gel breaking (30 min,1 mPa·s), filter loss ( C w =4.75×10 −4 m/min 1/2 ), anti-swelling (anti-swelling rate was 77.78 %) and salt tolerance. This study provides fundamental technical support for the application of SiO 2 -enhanced seawater-based temperature-resistant clean fracturing fluid in offshore fracturing.

Developing competent energy storage materials is crucial for efficient thermal energy storage and utilization. Microencapsulated lauryl alcohol as phase change material using SiO 2 shell was prepared through a novel one-pot synthesis of interfacial polycondensation using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a shell precursor. The thermal properties were analyzed through differential scanning calorimetry, which revealed that the melting and freezing points of microcapsules were 23 °C and 18.9 °C, respectively. For melting and freezing, the estimated latent heats were 90 J g −1 and 88.2 J g −1 , respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis confirms that the microcapsules are stable at a higher temperature. Besides, the leak test of the developed microcapsules was performed to investigate the stability during the melting process. Moreover, the prepared microcapsules (MPCM2) show stable and excellent thermophysical properties after 500 thermal cycles, which shows that the developed microcapsule is an ideal candidate for thermal energy storage. The spherical shape copper oxide (CuO) quantum dots (QDs) were successfully fabricated via copper basic calcium sodium borosilicate (Na 2 O–CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 ) precursor obtained with a facile sol–gel technique. The microstructural analysis of doped QDs are systemically characterized, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy. And the results reveal that the CuO QDs with the small size are well dispersed doped in sodium calcium borosilicate glass. Remarkably, the CuO glass materials exhibit the good third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) (1.379 × 10 −12 esu), which was investigated by femto-second Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1550 nm, pulse duration of 50 fs, repetition rate of 50 MHz. The glass hybrids displayed a reverse saturable absorption and self-focusing refraction performance. And the mechanism to explain the third-order nonlinearity of CuO glass may be predominantly originated from the surface plasmon resonance effect, the quantum confinement effect and partly from the thermal effect. Besides, it is interesting that the glass hybrids have significant nonlinear absorption effects that endow the material to the potential value of the application of optical limiting device.

Currently, common two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials composited with Si-based materials as anode for lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent electrochemical properties. In this study, we presented a one-step synthesis of amino-functionalized mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ) nanospheres through self-assembly. Morphology modulation and amino group grafting were performed simultaneously without secondary modification. Using tartaric acid and melamine as dual carbon sources, the 2D lamellar structure was constructed using the dehydration condensation reaction, with the mesoporous SiO 2 nanospheres uniformly intercalated within the carbon sheets. The composites were securely bonded by chemical attraction, effectively addressing the issue of structural collapse often encountered in silica–carbon composites. Ultimately, the lamellar SiO 2 @NC composite exhibited stable capacity of 539.5 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This strategy is simple and effective, compared to the complex processes typically associated with 2D carbon materials synthesis, and can be potentially extended to applications in catalysis, adsorption, and separation within diverse fields.

Litsea cubeba essential oil (EO)-encapsulated SiO 2 (SiO 2 -EO) nanocapsules were fabricated by in situ biosilicification for the treatment of biofilms on food-contact surfaces. By optimizing the synthesis conditions (0.5 mg/mL EO and 50 mM silicic acid), SiO 2 -EO nanocapsules exhibited a uniform size distribution (150–200 nm) with a distinct core–shell structure. The characterization of nanocapsules was elucidated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared, and x-ray diffraction analyses. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of SiO 2 -EO nanocapsules were 5 and 1.25 mg/mL for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. Compared to free EO, the SiO 2 -EO nanocapsules showed more significant inhibition activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial biofilms. Confocal experiments and SEM demonstrated that the nanocapsules efficiently penetrate biofilms within 30 min and deliver EO to destroy the membrane structure of bacteria. Eventually, SiO 2 -EO nanocapsules were also applied to four kinds of food-contact surfaces. The populations in biofilms exposed to 2.5 mg/mL of nanocapsules decreased 1.51–1.56 log CFU/cm 2 and 2.15–2.22 log CFU/cm 2 for E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. This study provides an innovative strategy to treat bacterial biofilms with EO-based nanocomposites.

Polyolefin separators with worse porous structures and compatibilities mismatch the internal environment and deteriorate lithium-ion battery (LIB) combination properties. In this study, a sulfonated SiO 2 (SSD) composited polypropylene separator (PP@SSD) is prepared to homogenize pore sizes and in situ-built SSD coatings on porous skeletons. Imported SSD uniformizes pore sizes owing to centralized interface distributions within casting films. Meanwhile, abundant cavitations enable the in situ SSD coating to facilely fix onto porous skeleton surfaces during separator fabrications, which feature simple techniques, low cost, environmental friendliness, and the capability for continuous fabrications. A sturdy SSD coating on the porous skeleton confines thermal shrinkages and offers a superior safety guarantee for LIBs. The abundant sulfonic acid groups of SSD endow PP@SSD with excellent electrolyte affinity, which lowers Li + transfer barriers and optimizes interfacial compatibility. Therefore, assembled LIBs give the optimal C-rate capacity and cycling stability, holding a capacity retention of 82.7% after the 400th cycle at 0.5 C.

Polyimide (PI), commonly used in space applications, is vulnerable to atomic oxygen (AO) erosion in low Earth orbit, causing performance degradation. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of ultrathin films has great potential as AO protective coatings for aerospace materials. In this study, nanometer-thick plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) SiO 2 films were deposited on in-situ oxygen plasma-activated PI surfaces. The nucleation and growth process of SiO 2 was systematically analyzed. A uniform and dense SiO 2 film was formed, providing limited resistance to AO erosion, but not sufficient for extreme environmental conditions. To further enhance AO resistance, we introduced thermal ALD-Al 2 O 3 interlayers within the same processing window and alternately deposited conformal, continuous Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 nanolaminates on the PI surface. The Al 2 O 3 interlayer effectively reduced the film deposition roughness, forming a smoother, denser barrier layer and minimizing growth defects. This dense ALD-Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 nanolaminate, with its inert Si-O-Al bonds, effectively prevents AO from penetrating the substrate, showing superior protection under long-term AO exposure. After AO irradiation, the surface remained smooth with no obvious defects or voids, effectively avoiding undercutting caused by AO. The synergistic effect of alumina and silica provides excellent AO protection while maintaining good optical transmittance.
