Heterogeneous hydrogenation is an effective way to improve the performance of unsaturated polymers, but the preparation of supported catalysts with high metal dispersion and stability remains challenging. Herein, we synthesize a SiO 2 -based support wrapping with carbon nitride on the surface (CN x @SiO 2 ) via the thermal polycondensation of melamine, on which Pd nanoclusters with highly exposed active sites are formed and stably anchored via the strong interaction between N and Pd. The thermal temperature affects the properties of CN x , which further modulates the electronic and structural state of Pd nanoclusters. The Pd/CN x @SiO 2 -500 catalyst, prepared at 500 °C with an optimal CN x structure ( g -C 3 N 4 ) and high nitrogen content, features highly dispersed and electron-rich Pd nanoclusters (1.3 nm). This catalyst exhibits a hydrogenation activity of 98.0% for nitrile rubber, with a selectivity of 100% for C=C bonds. This work provides a facile method to prepare Pd catalysts with high activity and stability, paving the way for the upgrading of unsaturated polymers via hydrogenation. Graphical abstract

Selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics is a crucial industrial reaction, but there are still challenges in developing nanocatalysts with stable active centers, yet easily recyclable characteristics. Here, a magnetically separable Pd/Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanocatalyst was prepared through the seeding growth of silica on the Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystal cluster (NC) followed by in situ reduction of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on the amino group modified Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nannotube (NT). The nanocatalyst showed good activity and stability in the hydrogenation of a series of nitroaromatics as the Pd NPs were highly dispersed on the nanotubes. Meanwhile, it could be easily separated from the reaction solution and well-redispersed in the solvent for the next-round reaction due to the superparamagnetic property of the Fe 3 O 4 NC and the good dispersibility of silica in many organic solvents. The magnetically separable nanocatalyst combined the high activity of the nanocatalyst and the convenient separation of a traditional heterogeneous catalyst, which effectively promote the practical application of nanomaterials in catalysis.

The combination of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and machine learning algorithm provides an effective means for the identification of pharmacodynamic substances. This paper reported a biomimetic synthesis route of Ag-30/SiO 2 -4/Cu-20/rice leaf (Ag-30/SiO 2 -4/Cu-20/RL) SERS platform with multiple synergistic electromagnetic enhanced performance. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect was strengthened as the SiO 2 nanolayer generated between Ag and Cu. This SERS platform demonstrated high sensitivity, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10 −10 M for 4-Aminophenylthiophenol (4-ATP) and an enhancement factor (EF) of 3.86 × 10 6 . More importantly, the principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted to analyze the SERS data of three different Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pharmacodynamic substances (Orientin, Atractylenolide III and Prim-o-glucosylcimifugin). The K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and Naïve Bayes (NB) achieved classification accuracy of 0.9474 and 0.9649, respectively. The platform provides guidance for the accurate identification of TCM pharmacodynamic substances.

The juice processing industry offers several benefits, including promoting health and wellness through the delivery of beverages rich in nutrients. Nonetheless, the industry encounters significant challenges regarding new technologies for processing and preservation given that they can be costly and labor-intensive. In this study, magnetic Janus silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticle which offers multifunctionality and high stability was synthesized and subsequently immobilized with a protease mutant T70I (T70I@MSNs) to serve as a clarifying agent in juice. The optimal conditions for the protease immobilized with SiO 2 nanoparticles showed superior tolerance and stability at pH 5 and 65 °C. Box-Behnken Design revealed optimizing conditions of 60 min, 50 °C and 0.2 % enzyme concentration which significantly influenced the clarification of the juice samples. Immobilized T70I@MSNs decreased >70 % of juice turbidity while maintaining about 78 % of enzyme activity after 7 consecutive cycles of reuse. Notably, T70I@MSN treatment enhanced certain volatile components by increasing alcohol and ester production, while changes in surface microstructure and functional groups were observed. This study highlights the significant improvement of magnetic Janus SiO 2 nanoparticles immobilized proteases in the clarification of juice against haze and undesirable properties, thereby offering a notable contribution to the juice processing industry.

Support materials play vital roles in heterogenous catalysis via the so-called support effects, and understanding on the support effects is beneficial for the design of high-performance catalysts. Herein, we represent detailed investigations on the support effects of Ag catalysts for dimethyl glycolate (DMO) semi-hydrogenation to methyl glycolate (MG), where G6 silica with amorphous mesopores, SBA-15 with parallel mesopores and silica nanospheres (MSNS) with center-radial ones were employed as the supports. The hydrogenation activity decreases in the order of Ag/MSNS > Ag/SBA-15 > Ag/G6 while the MG selectivity in the order of Ag/G6 > Ag/MSNS > Ag/SBA-15 at the same reaction conditions, indicating remarkable support effects on both activity and selectivity. Structural characterizations, temperature programmed experiments and in-situ FTIR of DMO adsorption experiments demonstrate that the weak confinement effect of G6 leads to the larger sized Ag nanoparticles and weakened activation of DMO and H 2 , which contributes to low hydrogenation activity. In contrast, the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 and MSNS deliver well confinement effects for Ag nanoparticles and the activation of DMO and H 2 , but the distinct pore structures result in different activation and diffusion behaviors. Finally, DMO conversion and MG yield are well correlated with the competitive adsorption of H 2 versus DMO on Ag catalysts, indicating such competitivity as a descriptor for DMO semi-hydrogenation over Ag catalysts.

Electrochemical gas sensors (EGSs) are the most effective means for detecting NO 2 gas in industry, while facing the issue of exorbitant cost due to the use of expensive Pt catalyst. Herein, well-dispersed C-SiO 2 into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was adopt as high-stable gas diffusion membrane for ultrafast electrochemical NO 2 sensors. The nano-SiO 2 not only prevents material aggregation but also constructs porous networks between the gas diffusion electrode and gas molecules, providing a larger sensing area for high sensor performance. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent response linearity, short response time, and high stability. As compared with commercial Pt/C electrode, the sensor response is improved by 170 %. Moreover, a multiple linear regression model was introduced to predict the response values of NO 2 in the range of 5–100 ppm, achieving only 1.5 % deviation from the real values. This work not only demonstrates the feasibility of non-precious metals in gas diffusion membranes but also provides guide for designing next-generation low-cost EGSs.

A series of SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -ZnO-La 2 O 3 -BaO (SBZLBa) glasses doped with Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ were synthesized using the melt-quenching technique. Their optical characteristics and potential applications in W-LED devices were investigated. The structural effects resulting from doping the glass with Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ ions were elucidated through infrared spectroscopy and an examination of the physical properties. The variations in emission intensity within the fluorescence spectrum validated the sensitizing effect of Dy 3+ on Eu 3+ within the glass matrix. By manipulating the transitions of both Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ , the excitation wavelength was altered, enabling the realization of cool white, neutral white, and warm white luminescence, thus accommodating the diverse requirements for white light emission in lighting applications. After incorporating 1.0 mol% of Dy 2 O 3 and 0.8 mol% of Eu 2 O 3 , respectively, the glass exhibited CIE coordinates of (0.3332, 0.3535), positioning it within the white light spectrum and in close proximity to the ideal white light coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). The SBZLBa-Dy 2 O 3 –0.8Eu 2 O 3 glass exhibited a quantum yield of 5.98 %. It has been demonstrated through acid and alkali resistance tests that this glass possesses excellent chemical stability. Additionally, temperature-dependent emission spectra have revealed that the luminous intensity of the glass maintains over 85 % of its room temperature value at 185 °C, with Eα determined to be 0.2387 eV.

Due to their unique surface characteristics, oil-water separation membranes with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties have promising applications in oil-water separation processes. However, the microstructure and chemical composition of the material surfaces are prone to degradation in harsh environments. This article employs nanosecond laser etching to improve the deposition quality of fumed SiO 2 for the fabrication of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic separation membranes. Various analytical methods are used to characterize the separation membranes. Nanosecond laser etching creates rough, ripple-like microstructures on stainless steel mesh, which not only enhances the deposition of fumed SiO 2 but also minimizes the interaction between solids and oil. This results in improved wetting characteristics and underwater oil repellency, significantly boosting both the performance and durability of the membrane. The prepared separation membrane demonstrated an average separation efficiency of 99.4% across five different oil-water mixtures, with all separation fluxes exceeding 58000 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹. After soaking in an acid-base solution for 15 days and undergoing 25 friction tests, the underwater oil contact angle was maintained at 156.3°, demonstrating high separation efficiency and outstanding stability, with significant potential for application, particularly in harsh environments.

To circumvent the limitations of natural antibodies, receptor, or enzyme, molecular imprinting technique has received intensive attention in analytical methods Herein, based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) molecularly imprinted polymer (SERS-MIP), a SERS-MIP sensor has been developed for the sensitive and selective detection of bisphenol A (BPA). To construct the BPA sensor, raspberry-type SiO 2 @Ag nanoparticles (SiO 2 @Ag NPs) were prepared to act as supporting substrate, and BPA was adopted as template molecule, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as functional monomer and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as cross-linker. Due to the strong plasma resonance character of Ag NPs, the SERS-MIP sensor showed good sensitivity in the detection of BPA. The core-shell and satellite-like structure of the SiO 2 @Ag composites could provide a large surface area for BPA recognition by molecular binding domains. In addition, the sensor could prevent interferences such as 4,4′-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol (BPAF) and 4,4′-Dihydroxybiphenyl (DOD). Moreover, the real water samples were tested to verify the reliability and feasibility of the method. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method behaved good analytical performance to BPA with a wide linear range from 1.75 × 10 −11 to 1.75 × 10 −6 M and a detection limit of 1.46 × 10 −11 M.

Uniform raspberry-like hollow SiO 2 @TiO 2 composite nanospheres (hSiO 2 @TiO 2 ) have been designed and prepared via a colloidal assembly method. Series of characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , high resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetry , and derivative thermogravity, have been carried out to analyze the composition, structure and morphology of the composite. The dispersion of TiO 2 nanoparticles on the outer shell of hollow SiO 2 (hSiO 2 ) nanospheres could be effectively tuned via employing H 2 O 2 as a hydroxyl modifier to repair the Si O bonds of the hSiO 2 . The effects of silanol content of hSiO 2 and the Si/Ti ratios were investigated in detail. This unique structure with refractive index of 1.218 and transmittance over 99% exhibited excellent self-cleaning capability when served as antireflective coatings.

Materials like metallic iron and its alloys are essential to daily living and industrial production. The benefits of using electrolysis technology to prepare iron and its alloys are great efficiency, controllability, and environmental protection. This study focuses on the feasibility of the electrochemical method for the direct preparation of metallic iron and Si–Fe alloys in iron ores with high fluoride content. The electrochemical behavior of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in molten SiO 2 –CaO–CaF 2 slag on tungsten electrodes was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry methods. It was determined that the reduction of Fe(II) ions follows a one-step two-electron transfer process: Fe(II) + 2e − → Fe(0). The reduction of Fe(III) involves a two-step electron transfer process: Fe(III) + e − → Fe(II) and Fe(II) + 2e − → Fe(0), respectively. The Fe(II)/Fe(0) process is an irreversible reaction controlled by diffusion. The diffusion coefficient of Fe(II) is D Fe(II) = 1.5 × 10 −6 cm 2 s −1 . The cathodic deposits of iron were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The findings indicate that the production of Fe 2 Si alloy through electrolysis is more favorable when Fe(II) is present in the slag, while the production of metallic iron is more favorable when Fe(III) is present in the slag. This work provides a basis for the electrochemical direct preparation of Fe–Si alloy and metallic iron in high fluorine iron ore.

The icing phenomenon in nature can cause serious economic losses and security concerns. Eco-friendly anti-icing and deicing surfaces have been developed to address these issues. In this study, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating was fabricated by a facile polymerization process in the presence of micro–nano structured SiO2/TiN particles followed by a two-step spraying technology. The optimal coating displays remarkable superhydrophobic performance with a water contact angle of 159.1° and a water roll-off angle as low as 1.2°; it survives tape peeling, Taber abrasion, and solution immersion and demonstrates weather and corrosion resistance. More importantly, the SiO2/TiN coating shows excellent anti-icing/deicing property and can withstand multiple icing/thawing cycles. The excellent anti-icing/deicing performance is attributed to the robust superhydrophobic surface and the photothermal effect of TiN nanoparticles. Our fluorine-free design strategy provides important guidance for actual large-scale eco-friendly anti-icing/deicing application.
