Surface treatment protective technology is a cost-effective approach to prevent harmful ions from infiltrating concrete, avoiding the deterioration of performance and increasing longevity. Here, a novel coupling agent with ester group (MA-KH-550) is synthesized from γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) and methyl acrylate (MA) to modify nano-SiO 2 particles. Subsequently, the ester-modified nano-SiO 2 can be successfully dispersed in alkaline composite silicate solutions to fabricate nano-SiO 2 /silicate coatings, improving the impermeability of concrete. The incorporation of nano-SiO 2 particles can fill microscopic pores in cementitious materials, which improves the compactness of the concrete. Furthermore, nano-SiO 2 particles can also accelerate secondary hydration of cement and synergistically generate more calcium silicate hydrate gel with silicates to further boost the compactness of the concrete. High-compactness coatings reduce the penetration of the medium, thereby enhancing the impermeability performance of the concrete. When the nano-SiO 2 particle content is 1.0 wt%, the optimal performance of concrete is achieved. Compared with the original C30 concrete, the C30 concrete treated with the nano-SiO 2 /composite silicate (nano-SiO 2 /CSC) shows a 31.1 % decrease in chloride ion resistance, a 35.5 % reduction in carbonization resistance, a loss rate of 1.08 % for anti-freezing quality. This work charts a new course for designing and developing high-performance composite silicate coatings for concrete.

Water-based drilling fluids are prone to contamination by high temperatures and high salt, resulting in a deteriorated filtration performance of the drilling fluids, posing a significant threat to the safety of drilling operations. This study utilized N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), and nanomaterials (nano-SiO2 and nanolaponite) to prepare a polymer nanocomposite NP-3 as a filtratef reducer for drilling fluids. The thermal stability evaluation of the polymer solution revealed that the thermal degradation temperature order of the different structural units of the polymer is DMAA < AMPS ≈ DMDAAC < NVP, and the temperature resistance of NP-3 in the solution is 220 °C. Evaluation of drilling fluid performance demonstrated that 3.5 wt % NP-3 enabled the drilling fluid to resist contamination from 15 wt % NaCl at 230 °C, with an American Petroleum Institute (API) filtration loss and high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) filtration loss after hot rolling of 4.2 and 22.0 mL, respectively. At high temperatures, the degradation of the polymer composite releases nanoparticles, which enhance the density of the filter cake, allowing for adjustable and enhanced control of filtration performance of drilling fluids under high-temperature and high-salty conditions.

The zinc orthosilicate, Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics, exhibit great potential as microwave dielectric materials due to their low dielectric constant and ultrahigh quality factor. The solid-state synthesis of Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics often results in the presence of a secondary phase of ZnO, however, leading to significantly lower Q × f values. Cold-isostatic-pressing (CIP) and nonstoichiometry have been proven effective in purifying the Zn 2 SiO 4 but need elaborate process and composition manipulation. In this work, it was found that the particle size of SiO 2 plays a crucial role in purifying the Zn 2 SiO 4 phase. Specially, nano-sized SiO 2 particles (15 and 30 nm) led to the formation of a ZnO secondary phase in synthesized Zn 2 SiO 4 ceramics, while micro-sized (2 and 10 µm) resulted in pure-phase Zn 2 SiO 4 with excellent microwave properties. Notably, when prepared with 10 µm SiO 2 and sintered at 1 340°C, the resulting Zn 2 SiO 4 exhibited outstanding microwave performances with a Q × f value of 122 570 GHz, a temperature coefficient of frequency τ f of −51.9 ppm/°C, and a dielectric constant ( ε r ) of 6.5. These findings highlight the importance of controlling particle size during synthesis to achieve desired material properties such as purity and excellent microwave performances.

Inspired by nepenthes pitcher plants, the slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces have received extensive attention. In its practical application, good oil storage and oil-locking ability are important guarantee for the surface to maintain the interface performance for a long time. In this paper, mesoporous silica (KCC-1) was obtained by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template agent, urea as a hydrolyzing agent, and TEOS as silicon source reagent, then modified with (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane. Then combined with the breath figures, amino-modified mesoporous silica, 3,3’-4,4’-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (S-BPDA), 2,2’-bis[4-( 4-aminophenoxyphenyl)]propane (BAPP) were used as raw materials to prepare polyimide SLIPS with good stability by a two-step method. The wettability and stability of SLIPS were investigated, and the results show that the introduction of mesoporous silica inorganic nanoparticles enhanced the performance of SLIPS. Among them, the sliding angle of polyimide SLIPS with a nanoparticle content of 10% is 2°, which has good self-cleaning performance, antifouling performance, and stability.

In this work, vanillin based inherently flame retardant polyurethane/SiO 2 composite foams were designed. Firstly, the vanillin based flame retarding diol (VDP) was synthesized. Then, the KH550 modified nano-SiO 2 (KH550-g-SiO 2 ) was prepared as the reinforcement. Subsequently, a series of flame-retardant polyurethane/SiO 2 composite foams (PUF-0.5P- x SiO 2 ) were synthesized by tailoring the hard-soft segments and KH550-g-SiO 2 contents. The results showed that KH550-g-SiO 2 significantly improve the thermal stability of the PUF-0.5P- x SiO 2 foams. In addition, the compressive strength of PUF-0.5P- x SiO 2 foams was enhanced from 0.18 MPa (PUF-0.5P) to 0.45 MPa (PUF-0.5P-2.0SiO 2 ) under 20% strain. The flame retardant properties of PUF-0.5P-2.0SiO 2 reached UL-94 V-0 grade. Meanwhile, the addition of KH550-g-SiO 2 also decreased the thermal conductivity from 0.046 W/m·k to 0.037 W/m·k for PUF-0.5P-2.0SiO 2 . This work may provide an approach to obtain the biobased lightweight polyurethane foams for the application in packaging and building areas.

In this work, alumina was selected as the second phase reinforced fused quartz ceramics and SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printing. The effect of the sintering procedure on the mechanical and dielectric properties of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were investigated in detail. The results show that the amount of cristobalite precipitation is the key factor affecting the properties of composite ceramics. The amount of cristobalite precipitation in composite ceramics could be controlled effectively by adjusting the heating rate, holding time, and sintering temperature. The sintering procedure is set as the heating rate of 4°C/min, sintering temperature of 1200°C, and holding time for 2 h, the flexural strength of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramic is 47.13 MPa, dielectric constant ranges from 2.90 to 2.97, and the tangent of loss angle is less than 0.041. SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics with high flexural strength and low dielectric constant were obtained by sintering procedure screening and optimization.

This study focuses on the surface modification of substrates using a poly(N,N-dimethyl-N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-N-[2′-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]-ammonium chloride-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate) P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA) and ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). By covalently bonding the Si-OH pendant of the copolymer with hydroxyl residues on the material's surface, a stable polymer coating is formed. The properties of P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA) coatings were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and contact angle (CA) meter. The addition of TEOS allows for the regulation of surface roughness. With the increase of TEOS content, the contact angle of underwater oil first increased and then decreased. The water contact angles were 8°, the underwater superoleophobic contact angle reached 168°, and the number of adherent platelets and Escherichia coli were significantly reduced to 7.5% and 5% on the surface of the coating, respectively. After undergoing simultaneous hydrolysis, the superoleophobic contact angle of P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA)/SiO 2 coating further increased to 174°. These interesting and robust properties make them promising candidates for biomedical applications. Highlights The underwater superoleophobic coating (contact angles of 174°). The P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA)/SiO 2 coating with excellent resistance to oil adhesion. Solve the hydroxyl residue problem. The coating resistance to E. coli and platelet adhesion.

Constructing a stable Cu 0 /Cu 2+ interface is critical for enhancing the C-C coupling during the process of CO 2 electroreduction. However, the high-valence Cu species are unstable under the operating conditions. Herein, polyhedral-shaped CuO is coated with hydroxy-rich SiO 2 nanoparticles (m-SiO 2 /CuO) to stabilize the Cu 2+ species, enabling efficient CO 2 reduction to the ethylene product. Significantly, the optimal m-SiO 2 /CuO catalyst exhibits an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 55.5 % and an industrial-level partial current density of 500 mA cm −2 toward ethylene. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra reveal that the strong interfacial interaction between CuO and hydroxy-rich SiO 2 is conducive to stabilizing the Cu 2+ species. In-situ characterizations reveal that the Cu 0 /Cu 2+ interface facilitates CO 2 activation and the key intermediate *OCCHO, thus promoting the production of ethylene. This work paves the way for developing advanced electro-catalysts of producing ethylene.

Ceramics can be traditionally classified as structural and functional ones. However, the miniaturization and multi-functionalization of various devices require ceramics to have both structural and functional properties. In this work, we aimed to develop structure-function integrated ZrO 2 –SiO 2 nanocrystalline glass–ceramics (NCGCs) by in situ formation of homogenously distributed amorphous carbon. By reducing the calcination temperature of carbon-containing powder, organic carbon groups were partially retained in the powder and they transformed to amorphous carbon in the sintered NCGCs. At micrometer scale, the carbon was homogenously distributed in the NCGCs, avoiding the commonly encountered agglomeration problem of carbon fillers. The effects of carbon on the microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance, and dielectric properties of the NCGCs were investigated. Results showed that the in situ formed amorphous carbon was homogenously distributed in the ZrO 2 nanocrystallites. Meanwhile, the amorphous carbon strongly bonded with the ZrO 2 –SiO 2 NCGCs. Only a small amount of carbon was combusted even after annealing at 1000°C for 3 h. The formation of amorphous carbon led to an improvement of nanohardness and wear resistance of the NCGCs, while slightly reducing Young's modulus and flexural strength. The electromagnetic wave transmission performances were improved due to the formation of amorphous carbon. The current study paves a new way for developing structure-function integrated glass–ceramics through in situ formation of carbon. The prepared structure-function integrated ZrO 2 –SiO 2 NCGCs have great potential to be used as radome and antenna windows of aerospace aircrafts that work in harsh environment.

Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) have been employed to enhance the distribution of new medications across the BBB. In this study, a synergistic nanoassembly has been prepared for magnetic resonance imaging-guided chemo-phototherapy of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). In accordance, Fe 3 O 4 NPs are prepared with SiO 2 shell followed by the loading of an anticancerous drug temozolomide (TMZ) to generate Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ NPs. Later, drug-loaded NPs are coated with platelet membrane (PLTM) to develop the final biocompatible form of nanoassembly as Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ@PLTM NPs for synergistic therapy of GBM. We combined chemotherapy with photothermal therapy in a magnetically targeted TMZ-loaded Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core-shell that was activated by near-infrared irradiation and then developed platelet membrane-coated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ to improve the precise delivery of drugs into GBM cells and enable a more efficient photothermal therapy. According to the cellular uptake findings, the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ@PLTM NPs possess a greater uptake compared to the uncoated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ NPs owing to the targeted binding of P-selectin on the surface of the PLTM to the CD44 receptors of GBM cells. Moreover, the nanoassembly has displayed a pH-responsive drug release and an excellent photothermal effect under NIR (808 nm, 1 W/cm 2 ) irradiation. After 10 min of irradiation, the temperature has been elevated to about 65 °C leading to the death of 80% of GBM cells in vitro. Additionally, the fabricated NPs possess a remarkable contrasting property for T 1 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide NPs. These findings demonstrate the promising theranostic behaviour of fabricated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /TMZ@PLTM NPs for synergistic therapy of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

The application potential of superhydrophobic coatings is inherently constrained by their stability, durability, and apparent color characteristics. To address these limitations, a thin superhydrophobic coating was prepared on the surface of cotton fabric, featuring a micron mastoid structure with distinct fiber boundaries. This coating is achieved through the grafting of polymer poly (trifluoroethyl methacrylate-random-glycyl methacrylate) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate modified SiO 2 nanoparticles onto the fabric surface. The chemical composition, thermal stability and micro/nano structure of the coating were evaluated by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The superhydrophobic coating not only exhibits exceptional oil-water separation capabilities, achieving a remarkable separation efficiency of 98%, but also ensures high reusability, enduring up to 10 consecutive oil-water separation cycles without significant performance degradation. Furthermore, the coating manifests mechanical stability and durability, maintaining its superhydrophobic nature even after undergoing rigorous mechanical abrasion, immersion in acidic and alkaline solutions, as well as exposure to elevated temperatures. In addition, an in-depth analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of this superhydrophobic modification on the inherent characteristics of cotton fabric, specifically its color, whiteness, and gloss. The findings reveal that the hue of the cotton fabric remains unaltered, while a marginal enhancement in whiteness and a slight reduction in gloss are observed post-modification, indicating small impact on the inherent characteristics of cotton fabric.

In this study, Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using the Stöber method and then physically mixing with MPS functionalized poly (styrene-co-acrylate) (PSA) emulsion to obtain a novel antibacterial composite material (PSA/Ag@SiO 2 ). The dispersion of composite latexes was improved by the formation of Si-O-Si covalent bonds , and the migration of AgNPs on the surface of composite films enhanced their antimicrobial activity. Analysis of UV-Vis absorption spectra , TEM images, XPS and XRD data confirmed the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2 and the successful coating of AgNPs by SiO 2 . TEM micrographs showed that Ag@SiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in the composite latexes, with an average particle size of 198 nm for PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite latexes, larger than that of PSA latexes (162 nm). FTIR spectra also indicated the presence of Si-O-Si covalent bonds resulting from the sol-gel reaction between MPS functionalized PSA with Ag@SiO 2 . XPS and WCA characterization revealed the disruption of the core-shell structure of Ag@SiO 2, leading to the migration of AgNPs to the air-film interface. The results of antibacterial activity demonstrated that PSA/Ag@SiO 2 composite films displayed antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus , and the former displayer a slightly better antibacterial activity than the latter. The water-based acrylic polymer coatings with antibacterial properties explored in current work have various applications in wood paints, varnishes, metal protection, decorative systems and other related fields.
