Monacolin K (MK) produced by Monascus spp. is mostly used to regulate cholesterol level, while it can be contaminated by citrinin, a mycotoxin yielded by some Monascus strains. To develop production of citrinin-free MK, an M . sp. MS-1 strain, identified as M. pilosus by morphologies and internal transcribed spacer sequences analysis, was isolated from red fermented rice. After 14 days of fermentation, yields of citrinin-free MK could be up to 0.58 mg/mL and 16.45 mg/g in liquid- and solidstate fermentation products under optimal conditions, respectively. Further determination revealed that no citrinin biosynthesis related genes such as ctnA , pksCT , ctnE , and ctnR were detected. Thus, HPLC combined with citrinin-related gene analyses can be used for rapid screening of non-citrinin production Monascus strains.

Selective dissolution is highly promising for tailoring the structures and functions of metal oxides toward various applications. Here, we demonstrate a successful fabrication of porous γ-MnO 2 by selectively dissolving Ca in a CaMnO 3 perovskite (CMO) via dilute HNO 3 treatment. The perovskite-derived γ-MnO 2 (denoted as CMO-72 h) outperformed drastically the pristine CaMnO 3 and a commercial γ-MnO 2 in the catalytic oxidation of NH 3 and NO, two representative gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere. Physicochemical characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed techniques (including H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD and NH 3 -TPD) suggests that the excellent catalytic performance of CMO-72 h is associated with its low–temperature reducibility and abundant surface–active oxygen species. Specifically, acid treatment led to the oxidation of Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ on the surface, increasing significantly the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ratio from 0.76 (for CMO) to 1.45 (for CMO-72 h) and, meanwhile, generating additional surface oxygen vacancies . As a result, O 2 molecules can be easily adsorbed and activated on the CMO-72 h, leading to improved performance in NH 3 and NO oxidation. This study may offer new opportunities in the synthesis of high-performance Mn oxide catalysts for environmental applications.

Photocatalytic NO removal technology is considered as one of the most effective green methods for reducing atmospheric NO but there remains the problems of lower efficiency and poor stability of photocatalysts . Rapid recombination of photogenerated electron (e − ) and holes (h + ) is known as a key issue that causes low activity and poor stability of catalysts. Herein, we report a novel AgCu@UiO-66-NH 2 photocatalyst (AgCu@UN) that is made up of AgCu alloy on the surface of Zr-MOF (UiO-66-NH 2 ) by employing in-situ photodeposition method. The experimental results of photocatalytic NO removal indicated that the optimized 0.5Ag0.5Cu@UN sample with 0.5 mg of Ag and Cu exhibited the best NO removal efficiency of 63 % for ppb-level atmospheric NO, more higher than that of pure UiO-66-NH 2 (38 %). The characterizations suggested that the excellent photocatalytic performance of 0.5Ag0.5Cu@UN can be ascribed to the efficient charge separation and transfer and the visible-light-harvesting ability due to benefiting electron migration process between AgCu alloys and UN. Moreover, the enriched electrons around AgCu could be transferred to O 2 to generate more superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), which could oxidize NO to the final product, nitrate (NO 3 − ). The present findings can provide some novel insights for the design of efficient MOF based photocatalysts to eliminate low concentrations of NO X .

Surface defect engineering has been regarded as an appealing strategy to improve photocatalytic performance, but defects are susceptible to inactivation and thus lose their function as active sites. In this study, we successfully tailored and identified the dynamic evolution of surface hydroxyl defects over ZnTi-layered double hydroxide (ZnTi-LDH) photocatalyst. The enrichment of surface hydroxyl electrons and the dynamic circulation of hydroxyl defects result in enhanced separation and transport capabilities of photogenerated carriers, thereby ensuring the perpetual activation of small molecules into •O 2 − and •OH. The optimized structure has demonstrated NO removal efficiency values as high as 70.0 %, while concurrently suppressing the emission of NO 2 — a dangerous byproduct. Furthermore, ZnTi-LDH exhibits remarkable adaptability to varying environmental conditions and satisfactory durability over extended periods of reaction. This research offers valuable insights into the key role of surface hydroxyl in sustainable NOx removal technologies, and the findings contribute significantly to the advancement of environmental remediations.

Expanding light response is a significant approach to increase the harvesting efficiency of solar energy for photocatalysts. In this paper, aqueous CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) were created using sol-gel glass as a reactor. These bright SiO 2 glass-coated NCs were decorated on hollow TiO 2 bowl array (TBN) via mechano-chemical pre-reaction and subsequent hydrothermal treatment for the first time to enhance the photocatalytic performance for NO removal. The homogeneous distribution of the NCs and the well-developed interface in type II CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 heterostructures play important roles for improving the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. The light response of the CsPbBr 3 NCs increased the harvesting efficiency of solar energy. In addition, the bright photoluminescence of the CsPbBr 3 NCs was almost quenched to further confirm the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers in the heterostructures. Using optimized preparation conditions, the CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 composite sample revealed an outstanding NO removal rate of 77.9 % at a concentration of 300 ppb, in which 45.2 % of NO was removed using pure TBN. In addition, the CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 sample revealed excellent performance for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 evolution rate of 104.3 µM∙L −1 ∙h −1 , suggesting the CsPbBr 3 /TiO 2 composite can be applied for various photocatalytic fields. These results supplied new insights for the synthesis of photocatalysts and application of perovskite NCs.

In this study, a BiOI/Bi 5 O 7 I photocatalyst is synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The degradation efficiency of NO can reach 70 % under visible light. Subsequently, water-based polyurethane is used as the film-forming matrix, and fluorinated silane is used as low surface energy components, a BiOI/Bi 5 O 7 I water-based polyurethane photocatalytic superhydrophobic coating (FBIU) is prepared by a layer-by-layer spraying technique. The high catalytic activity of BiOI/Bi 5 O 7 I comes from the heterojunction effect of the two semiconductors and the improved interface, which enables the degradation rate of NO to reach 76.9 %, accompanied by extremely low NO 2 conversion rate (<1 %). The wettability, chemical stability and mechanical stability of the FBIU coating are studied to investigate its impact on the long-term oxidative degradation performance of NO. And the self-cleaning characteristics and specific micro-nano structure of FBIU improve the wear resistance of the coating, manifested as a contact angle of 157.8° to water after 320 times of sandpaper polishing. Finally, based on the photocatalytic mechanism of BiOI/Bi 5 O 7 I semiconductor materials, a green long-term purification and degradation mechanism of NO by coatings is proposed. This can provide some insights into the design of air purification coatings for building exterior walls.

Stroke is a global disease that seriously threatens human life. The pathological mechanisms of ischemic stroke include neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and the destruction of blood vessels at the lesion site. Here, a biocompatible in situ hydrogel platform was designed to target multiple pathogenic mechanisms post-stroke, including anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, and promotion of angiogenesis. Double-crosslinked responsive multifunctional hydrogels could quickly respond to the pathological microenvironment of the ischemic damage site and mediate the delivery of nitric oxide (NO) and ISO-1 (inhibitor of macrophage migration inhibitory factor, MIF). The hydrogel demonstrated good biocompatibility and could scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and MIF. In a mouse stroke model, hydrogels, when situated within the microenvironment of cerebral infarction characterized by weak acidity and elevated ROS release, would release anti-inflammatory nanoparticles rapidly that exert an anti-inflammatory effect. Concurrently, NO was sustained release to facilitate angiogenesis and provide neuroprotective effects. Neurological function was significantly improved in treated mice as assessed by the modified neurological severity score, rotarod test, and open field test. These findings indicate that the designed hydrogel held promise for sustained delivery of NO and ISO-1 to alleviate cerebral ischemic injury by responding to the brain’s pathological microenvironment.

MnO x based catalysts exhibit excellent low-temperature activity in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x by NH 3 . The effect of Mn oxidation state (chemical valence) on the NH 3 -SCR activity is an interesting topic and important for designing an active catalyst. This study aimed to clarify the intrinsic effect of Mn valence in NO-SCR reaction. For this purpose, the pure MnO x (MnO, Mn 3 O 4 , Mn 2 O 3 , MnO 2 ) and physical mixed 30% MnO x /TiO 2 catalysts, as well as three Mn/TiO 2 catalysts prepared by impregnation, were investigated for the low temperature NO-SCR with NH 3 in the presence of excess O 2 . The catalysts were characterized by N 2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS), and temperature programmed reduction of H 2 (H 2 -TPR) to probe the physical and chemical properties of catalysts. The MnO x with different chemical valence exhibited distinct intrinsic activity. The Mn 3 O 4 and MnO/TiO 2 showed the highest intrinsic activity (TOR) for the unsupported and supported catalysts, respectively. The MnO x species with low chemical valence (MnO, Mn 3 O 4 ) exhibited overall high intrinsic SCR activity (larger than 0.012 NO h −1 nm −2 MnOx ). The MnO x with different valence normally changed to higher oxidation state after physically mixed with TiO 2 . The content of MnO x species with different valence depended on their loading and Mn precursor, showing a totally different constitution. This work provides new insights into the Mn valence effect on the intrinsic activity for low-temperature SCR.

The M/SSZ-39 catalysts (M = In, Co, Cu, Fe) with different metal species and metal loadings were synthesized using the wet impregnation method on a small-pore SSZ-39 molecular sieve. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-dehydrogenation and hydrogen temperature program reduction (H2-TPR) were employed to characterize the effects of various metal components and metal loadings on the performance of CH4 selective catalytic reduction of NO reaction (CH4-SCR). The characterization results showed that the In/SSZ-39 catalyst exhibited significantly higher catalytic activity compared to the Cu-, Co-, and Fe/SSZ-39 catalysts, suggesting that indium (In) is a more suitable active ingredient for the CH4-SCR reaction. The xIn/SSZ-39 (x = 1, 2, 3, x represents the In loadings of 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt% and 3.0 wt%) catalysts, with different In loadings, all present excellent CH4-SCR performance. By varying the In loadings, the type of In species present in the catalyst can be regulated, thus enhancing DeNOx activity and CH4 selectivity in the CH4-SCR reaction. At a low temperature of 400 °C and a low CH4/NO feed ratio (CH4/NO = 1), the 3In/SSZ-39 catalyst, featuring highly active InOx clusters, achieves the best low-temperature CH4-SCR performance, with a high NO conversion rate of up to 90% and a CH4 selectivity of up to 74.2%.

Electrocatalytic NO reduction reaction (NORR) offers a promising route for sustainable NH 3 synthesis along with removal of NO pollutant. However, it remains a great challenge to accomplish both high NH 3 production rate and long duration to satisfy industrial application demands. Here, we report an in situ-formed hierarchical porous Cu nanowire array monolithic electrode ensembled in a pressurized electrolyzer to regulate NORR reaction kinetics and thermodynamics, which delivers an industrial-level NH 3 partial current density of 1007 mA cm –2 with Faradaic efficiency of 96.1% and remains stable at 1000 mA cm –2 for 100 hours. Integrating the Cu nanowire array monolithic electrode with pressurized electrolyzer boosts the NH 3 production rate to 10.5 mmol h –1 cm –2 , which is over tenfold that using commercial Cu foam at 1 atm. The NORR performance can be attributed to the promoted NO mass transfer to the enriched Cu surface, which could increase the NO coverage on Cu and then destabilize adsorbed NO and weaken hydrogen adsorption, thereby facilitating NO hydrogenation to NH 3 while suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution.

Sonodynamic therapy offers a highly accurate treatment for bacterial infections; however, its antibacterial efficacy is hindered by bacterial biofilms that limit the penetration of sonosensitizers. Herein, a nitric oxide (NO)-driven mushroom-like Janus nanomotor (BT@PDA-La) based on the unilateral coating of polydopamine (PDA) on piezoelectric tetragonal barium titanate (BT) and further modified with l-arginine (l-Arg) on the PDA side is fabricated. In the infected microenvironment with high levels of H2O2, NO is produced unilaterally from BT@PDA-La, thus leading to its self-propelled movement and facilitating its permeability in the biofilm. Under ultrasonic vibrations, the piezoelectric effect of BT@PDA-La is triggered by the exogenous mechanical wave, and toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) are efficiently generated via an in situ catalytic reaction. The synergistic treatment with ROS/NO achieved the destruction of biofilms and embedded drug-resistant bacteria in vitro. Importantly, BT@PDA-La exhibits excellent biofilm penetration capacity, effectively eliminating biofilm infection while accelerating the healing of infected muscles by alleviating oxidative stress, regulating inflammatory factors, and accelerating angiogenesis. Collectively, this study provides a promising strategy for enhancing the penetration of pathological environment-driven nanomaterials through biofilms and advances the application of nanomotors for the therapy of bacterial infections in clinical medicine.

Long afterglow materials have been utilized to reduce the dependence of photocatalytic air purification technology on light sources, but research on the synergistic application of light storage and visible light catalytic materials in self-cleaning coatings is limited. In this work, stable visible light catalytic material, (C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 ), was selected as the catalytic material. The afterglow powder mainly composed of strontium aluminate (SA) was used as a light storage material. A ternary composite photocatalytic material SA/C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 (SCBW) was prepared, which can work in both light and dark environments. Epoxy resin was introduced to construct coatings containing SCBW (CSCB). The high catalytic activity of SCBW is attributed to the heterojunction effect of various semiconductors and the improved interface, resulting in a degradation rate of nitrogen oxides (NO) reaching 75 % and proving the degradation effect on formaldehyde aqueous solution and organic dyes. Additionally, the synergistic effect of fluorescence characteristics and photocatalytic ability endow the material with superior antibacterial properties, while the self-cleaning functionality of CSCB enhances the durability of the coating. Finally, the mechanism of fluorescence-assisted enhanced photocatalytic self-cleaning coating was discussed, providing insights into the design of multifunctional photocatalytic self-cleaning coatings for air purification and pollutant separation.
