Biomimetic synthesis of Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NWs with visible-light-enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin

Yuling Liu,Qingsheng Wu,Yaping Zhao

1D Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NWs have been constructed to enhance visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity via biomimetic synthesis. Cu nanowires (NWs) were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. During the process of biomimetic synthesis, the porous PTFE film, which can mimic the transport process of cell membranes, plays an important role in controlling the transport speed of silver ions (Ag+) to decrease the reaction speed. Thus inhibition of the replacement reaction of Ag+/Cu and the uniform growth of Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter of about 10 nm on Cu-NWs can be realized simultaneously. The diameter of Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NW is about 70 nm. Owing to the high electron transport of single crystal Cu-NWs, the free electrons in Ag3PO4 are transferred out to promote photogenerated electron–hole pair separation. The stability of Ag3PO4 NPs of the Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NWs was improved and the photodecomposition no longer occurred. Meanwhile, the band-gap of Ag3PO4 decreased to 2.07 eV after being coated on Cu-NWs and expanded the absorption scope of visible-light. In addition, the active species-trapping experiments indicated that the holes and ˙O2− play important roles in the photocatalytic reactions. The novel Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NWs were used for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CPFX) for the first time and showed high photocatalytic degradation performance. After visible-light irradiation for 15 min, the degradation rates of CPFX with pure Ag3PO4 NPs and AC0.3 as catalysts were about 27% and 53%. In the end, the degradation efficiency of Ag3PO4-NPs/Cu-NWs was 6.07 times that of the pure Ag3PO4 NPs.

Preparation of a Novel Ag3PO4/Bi-MOF Heterojunction Photocatalyst for the Degradation of Organic Pollutants Under Visible Light Irradiation

Ji Yufeng,Zou Congyang,Wang Yong,Zhou Zhuyou,Liu Menghe,Xu Ying,Liu Ruijie,Yang Minjie

In this study, a novel photocatalyst composed of silver phosphate (Ag 3 PO 4 ) and bismuth-based organic framework (Bi-MOF) were synthesized via chemical precipitation at room temperature, and the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants under visible light irradiation was conducted to evaluate their photocatalytic performance. The composite materials exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure Bi-MOF and Ag 3 PO 4 , with APBM-1/1 performing the most effectively. The degradation efficiencies of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) were 99% and 86.9% within 50 min and 30 min of light exposure, respectively. The construction of a unique p-n heterojunction interface between Ag 3 PO 4 and Bi-MOF significantly enhanced the efficiency of interfacial charge separation, leading to exceptional photocatalytic activity. Capture experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were conducted, revealing that photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) were the primary active species involved in the degradation reaction. Based on these findings, a plausible mechanism for the photocatalytic process was proposed.

In-situ photodegradation monitoring from repeatable ultra-sensitive SERS fiber probes based on Ag nanoparticle and Ag3PO4 nanocube composite

Tingting Hu,Xiaoyu Han,Haimei Zeng,Jihong Zhang,Jun Xie,Jianjun Han

Photocatalytic compound decomposition can be an effective protocol for the prominent and urgent solving of the environmental pollution and energy shortage problems. In-situ monitoring of the substance concentrations change during the process is of importance for understanding the decomposition process and final effects. In present research, a surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) fiber probe based photocatalyst decomposition monitoring method is proposed. Ag nanoparticles and Ag 3 PO 4 microcube composites were synthesized by ion exchange and subsequent ion reduction method, and then they were coated on silica fiber end-tip for probe fabrication. The microstructures, elements distribution, and morphologies analysis confirm the formation of dense Ag nanoparticles with 30 nm diameter on 1 μm edge length Ag 3 PO 4 cubes. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) induced absorption peak of Ag nanoparticles is found at 318 nm, along with the band-gap absorption of Ag 3 PO 4 cubes. The Ag nanoparticles and Ag 3 PO 4 composites are homogeneously distributed on the fiber end-tip surface. The fiber probes show the lowest detection limit of 10 −14 M using crystal violet analyte, and as high as 5.3 × 10 11 calculated enhancement factor, due to the strong LSPR induced electrical field from the densely distributed Ag nanoparticles on Ag 3 PO 4 microcubes surface. Furthermore, the linear relationship between analyte concentrations and SERS intensities indicates a potential for quantitative analysis. The analytes crystal violet and 4-aminothiophenol can be photodegraded under UV and visible light irradiation by Ag 3 PO 4 . The Raman spectra of crystal violet and 4-aminothiophenol intensities decrease with longer irradiation durations, indicating the decomposition of organic compounds. The fiber probes also present repeatable using within several cycles. The research provides a potential method for photocatalyst decomposition monitoring.

Trace substance detection and in situ photocatalytic degradation using recyclable ag nanoparticle/ Ag3PO4 tetrapod composite on SERS fiber probes

Tingting Hu,Haimei Zeng,Hao Peng,Guanchao Yin,Jihong Zhang,Jun Xie,Yang Jiang

With the increasing discharge of pollutants into air, water, and soil, the rapid and sensitive detection and treatment of chemical pollutants, including toxic organic dyes and heavy metal ions, have become critical for minimizing potential threats to the ecological cycle and human health. In the current research, an in-situ degradation approach for toxic substances is proposed, combined with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Fiber probes based on a silver nanoparticles/ silver phosphate tetrapod (Ag/ Ag 3 PO 4 ) composite were fabricated using a sequence of ion exchange, chemical reduction, and subsequent coating processes. The fiber probes were deployed for ultra-sensitive SERS detection and in situ photocatalytic degradation of dyes (specifically crystal violet (CV)) and heavy metal ions (particularly Hg 2+ ). The probes were functionalized with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) to facilitate the detection of Hg 2+ . Notably, the probes demonstrated detection limits as low as 10 −14  M for crystal violet (CV) and 4-aminothiophenol (PATP), and 10 −12  M of Hg 2+ . Under light exposure, the substrate degraded 93.2 % of CV and 98.0 % of PATP within 60 min, and 82.3 % of Hg 2+ within 30 min, as monitored in situs. Finite element method analysis suggested that the high electromagnetic field intensity generated by Ag/ Ag 3 PO 4 resulted from the close packing of Ag nanoparticles. Furthermore, the SERS fiber probes exhibited outstanding stability, selectivity, and reusability. This research suggest that the recyclable Ag/ Ag 3 PO 4 fiber probes hold significant potential for the detection and in situ monitoring of the degradation of trace environmental contaminants.

Straw-Derived Activated Carbon Decorated with Ag3PO4 for Organic Pollutant Removal by a Circular Degradation Mechanism: Adsorption and Photocatalysis

Yihang Yue,Lin Han,Bo Ding,Yanxi Yang,Xiaoju Yue,Shifeng Wang,Qingguo Song,Chun Du

The escalating problem of water pollution has become an urgent concern, as it significantly undermines people’s quality of life and overall public health. The increasing severity of water pollution represents a global challenge, with profound implications for human society. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization coupled with alkaline activation was utilized to repurpose barley straw into activated carbon (AC) as an absorbent. Silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) was synthesized as a potent photocatalyst. Subsequent ultrasound-assisted loading integrated the robust adsorptive capabilities of the AC with the advanced photocatalytic efficiency of silver phosphate, resulting in a superior composite material (AC/Ag3PO4) and implementing a novel “absorption–photocatalysis” active circular degradation strategy to remove hazardous organics in water. Comprehensive characterization assays confirmed the successful synthesis and incorporation of Ag3PO4 onto the AC scaffold. The composite with a Ag3PO4 concentration of 3 wt % exhibited a high methylene blue (MB) removal efficiency of 99.4% within 100 min. The reaction rate of this composite surpassed that of standalone AC by a factor of 2.89. Furthermore, cyclic regeneration studies via adsorption–desorption methodologies revealed the composite’s resilience and sustained performance. The MB removal efficiency was maintained at 85.5% over five consecutive cycles, demonstrating the composite’s remarkable stability. The integration of adsorptive and photocatalytic functionalities within a single system mitigates potential secondary pollution arising during the AC’s desorption phase and enhances the organic contaminant removal efficiency. Moreover, the utilization of this integrated material reduces the quantity of chemicals and energy required for conventional adsorption water treatment techniques, as the material harnesses sunlight or alternative light sources to catalyze contaminant decomposition. This reduces the dependence on chemical treatment agents, contributing to resource conservation and alleviating environmental burdens. This pioneering approach offers a novel paradigm for addressing pollutant challenges in aqueous environments.

Catalytic ozonation performance and mechanism of nanostructured Ag3PO4/NiAl layered double hydroxide composites for efficient inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa

Zhuwu Jiang,Haoshuai Wang,Zhihao Lin,Jin Chen,Zhen Zheng,Chunxue Li,Xiao Yao,Jyunhong Shen

Compared to traditional treatment methods, the catalytic ozonation process based on an advanced and reliable ozone generator and highly efficient catalysts has shed new light on treating algal blooms in water bodies. In this study, Ag 3 PO 4 /NiAl-LDH nanocomposites were synthesized by a two-step co-precipitation method, characterized, and applied as ozonation catalysts for the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa . Under controlled conditions, the nanocomposite (ANA-10) with an Ag 3 PO 4 : NiAl-LDH weight ratio of 1:10 exhibited excellent catalytic ozonation performance and reusability, effectively achieving a nearly complete algae removal within 60 min. The rate constant of ANA-10 reached approximately 0.0958 min −1 , being 6.4-, 2.8-, and 2.1-fold higher than that of individual O 3 , Ag 3 PO 4 , and NiAl-LDH, respectively. The variations in the physiological properties of the algal cells reflect severe damage and destruction of their cellular morphology, membrane permeability, intracellular and extracellular organics, proteins, and antioxidant system during the ANA-10 catalyzed ozonation process. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching experiments indicated that algae inactivation can be attributed to the formed reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as OH, O 2 − and 1 O 2 . In addition, the mechanism of ROS formation over ANA-10 was clarified and involved Ag 3 PO 4 -assisted enhancement of the redox of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ and accelerated surface hydroxylation. Overall, this study offers useful insights into the control of harmful cyanobacterial blooms.

Chemical reaction kinetics and the characteristic properties of injectable adhesives of nano-hydroxyapatite/Ag3PO4/polyurethane for bone and tooth repair

Mei Quanjing,Lin Lili,Wang Jian,Cai Bin,Zou Qin,Li Jidong,Li Yubao,Zuo Yi

Advancements have been made to injectable polymer technologies following the development of minimally invasive techniques for bone and tooth treatment. To improve the conversion rate and avoid potential toxicity of traditional injectable polymer, new injectable adhesives have been developed to ensure good biocompatibility, while optimizing their suitable mechanical and antibacterial properties. In this study, we synthesized a two-part injectable n-HA/Ag 3 PO 4 /polyurethane system (PU) featuring different contents of nanohydroxyapatite (n-HA) and silver salt (Ag 3 PO 4 ). After the prepolymer (Part A) mixed with a hardener (Part B), the compounded adhesive was injected into pores and set in situ with antibacterial properties. The results indicated that a high conversion rate reached 95% within 24 h could effectively reduce the release of a toxic monomer. Among these composites, the incorporation of n-HA in PU was the critical factor to ensure the adhesive’s material characteristics and cytocompatibility. With the increased content of n-HA, from 0 to 30 wt%, the compressive strength, setting time, surface wettability, and differentiation activities improved significantly. Although the injectability and setting time of the PUs decreased with the increase of n-HA, the values of injectable PUs still met with ISO standard requirements. The antibacterial tests against Staphylococcus aureus showed that the incorporation of Ag 3 PO 4 in PUs (1 wt% and 3 wt%) exhibited stronger antimicrobial effects than that without the addition of silver. Compared to the PUs with the addition of 3 wt% Ag 3 PO 4 , which led to poor cellular viability, PUs with 1 wt% Ag 3 PO 4 not only offered good antimicrobial properties, but also expressed excellent cytocompatibility, suggesting that this agent might be a promising injectable adhesive system.

Degradation of levofloxacin in aqueous solution by non-thermal plasma combined with Ag3PO4/activated carbon fibers: Mechanism and degradation pathways

Shi Gong,Yabing Sun,Ke Zheng,Guilin Jiang,Lian Li,Jingwei Feng

Degradation of quinolone antibiotic levofloxacin (LFX) in water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma combined with Ag 3 PO 4 loaded activated carbon fibers (Ag 3 PO 4 /ACFs) system was studied. The prepared Ag 3 PO 4 /ACFs were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The results showed that the cubic Ag 3 PO 4 was well loaded on surface of the ACFs with a large specific surface area. Effects of initial concentration of LFX, discharge voltage, initial pH, liquid circulation flow rate, and catalyst dosage on the removal rate of LFX were discussed. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of LFX at 18 min could reach 93% with the addition of Ag 3 PO 4 /ACFs compared with 63% by single DBD plasma (discharge voltage 10 kV, initial concentration of LFX 20 mg/L). The addition of Ag 3 PO 4 /ACFs increased the mineralization rate of LFX from 11% to 46%. The possible degradation pathways of LFX were derived by Gaussian calculation and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis, decarboxylation, demethylation, dehydroxylation, side chain decomposition, and ring cleavage involved in the degradation process of LFX.

In situ synthesized MoS2/Ag dots/Ag3PO4 Z-scheme photocatalysts with ultrahigh activity for oxygen evolution under visible light irradiation

Zehao Wang,Xuejun Xu,Zhichun Si,Liping Liu,Yuxiang Liu,Yonghong He,Rui Ran,Duan Weng

MoS 2 /Ag 3 PO 4 heterojunction photocatalysts have attracted great attention in dye degradation and water oxidation, in which Z-scheme plays a critical role in the catalytic performance as a result of energy band structure alignment between MoS 2 and Ag 3 PO 4 . Creating metal sites at composite interfaces as recombination centers of photo-generated electrons from conduction band (CB) of Ag 3 PO 4 and holes from valence band (VB) of MoS 2 is an effective strategy to enhance the charge separation efficiency and photocatalytic performance. Strong coupled MoS 2 /Ag dots/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated by one-pot precipitation method, in which highly dispersed Ag dots are located at the MoS 2 /Ag 3 PO 4 interfaces and MoS 2 is bonded with PO 4 3- in the form of Mo-O-P. The fabricated MoS 2 /Ag dots/Ag 3 PO 4 photocatalyst presents a 2.8-fold enhancement of photocatalytic activity of water oxidation compared to that of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 , which is achieved for the first time. The great enhancement of photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the improved Z scheme mechanism with strongly coupled MoS 2 /Ag dots/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary interfaces, in which highly dispersed Ag dots serve as efficient recombination centers resulting in the improved separation of photo-generated holes and electrons of Ag 3 PO 4 as well as photocatalytic activity of oxygen evolution.

Redox-mediating centers overcome activity-stability trade-off in photocatalysis: Singlet oxygen generation via dual pathways on Ce-doped Ag3PO4

Bing Wang,Yao Liu,XiangBo Feng,MeiMei Xu,EnZhou Liu,YuZhen Zhao,ZongCheng Miao,Zhuo Li

Ag 3 PO 4 exemplifies the persistent activity-stability trade-off in photocatalysis, where its high photo-oxidation capability is inevitably undermined by severe photocorrosion. This work breaks this coupling by constructing Ce 3 + /Ce 4+ redox-mediating centers within Ag 3 PO 4 . The optimal catalyst achieves near-complete degradation of tetracycline antibiotics within 30 min, with a rate constant increased by approximately 3.2 times, and maintains over 85% of its initial activity after five cycles, whereas pristine Ag 3 PO 4 undergoes complete deactivation. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is identified as the dominant species, and a dual-pathway generation mechanism that bypasses the material's inherent constraints is unveiled: alongside the • OOH‑mediated hole oxidation pathway, the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ couple catalyzes a sequential two‑electron O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 and its subsequent Fenton‑like conversion to 1 O 2 . Combined spectroscopic and theoretical analyses confirm that these centers act as exclusive electron traps, diverting photoexcited electrons away from Ag + sites—thus inhibiting Ag + → Ag 0 corrosion—and directing both electron and hole densities toward themselves in the excited state. This work demonstrates that engineering atomically dispersed redox mediators can decouple charge separation from detrimental surface reactions, providing a general strategy to simultaneously confer high activity and robust stability upon otherwise fragile photocatalysts.

Synergetic tuning of photocatalytic activity and photostability of Ag3PO4 via yttrium doping, carbon quantum dots and BiVO4 for atenolol degradation

Yifei Wang,Jing Niu,Xin Gao,Yanlin Zhang

In this study, Y-doped Ag 3 PO 4 , carbon quantum dots (CQDs), BiVO 4 were used to synthesize Z-scheme Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were employed to probe into the crystalline structure, morphology, optical property and chemical composition of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 . The kinetic constant of the prepared Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 was approximately 2.8 times that of pristine Ag 3 PO 4 for atenolol degradation. The degradation of atenolol mainly depended on the excited holes, •OH and •O 2 − . The photocatalysis mechanism of Y-Ag 3 PO 4 /CQDs/BiVO 4 conforms to the Z-scheme mechanism deduced by reactive species trapping experiment, electron spin resonance (ESR) and photoelectrochemical measurement (photocurrent response and EIS). The introduction of yttrium, CQDs and BiVO 4 significantly promoted the photogenerated carriers separation of Ag 3 PO 4 and inhibited the photogenerated electron-holes pairs recombination of Ag 3 PO 4 during the degradation of atenolol. Oxygen defects caused by the doping of Y 3+ into Ag 3 PO 4 were the centers of capture of photogenerated electrons to generate •O 2 − , inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-holes pairs and the photocorrosion of Ag 3 PO 4 .

A photocatalyst of graphene oxide (GO)/Ag3PO4 with excellent photocatalytic activity over decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) under visible light irradiation

Weiyi Chen,Xiaojun Niu,Jie Wang

A series of graphene oxide (GO)/Ag 3 PO 4 composites were synthesized using ion exchange-chemical precipitation method with different GO content, and the photocatalytic reduction degradation effect on decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) over GO/Ag 3 PO 4 was also studied. The optimized composite exhibited superior photocatalytic activity. When the content of GO was 7%, the degradation efficiency of BDE-209 could reach 97.33% in anoxic water with methanol as electron donors after 8 h of visible light irradiation, being 3 times that over pure Ag 3 PO 4 and the BDE-209 reduction generated 3Br-8Br PBDEs congeners. The photocatalytic degradation of BDE-209 has been further investigated under different reaction conditions, such as photocatalyst dosage and pH of reaction system. According to analysis of the intermediates’s generation, accumulation and distribution, we proposed that the BDE-209 reduction mechanism was the multi-electron reduction process. GO not only trapped electrons to improve the charge separation on Ag 3 PO 4 , but also fleetingly transferred the accumulated electrons to BDE-209. This study indicates that GO/Ag 3 PO 4 could be a promising material for environmental treatment of persistent pollutants.
