In this study, a novel surface covalent reaction method was used to modify attapulgite nanoparticles on the surface of polypropylene adsorption membrane to adsorb various small molecular pollutants for the first time. The surface covalent reaction method has the advantage of step control. Therefore, the uniformity and stability of attapulgite nanoparticles can be ensured, and then could effectively improve the adsorption performance of polypropylene adsorption membrane. On the other hand, compared with various materials modified on the surface of polypropylene adsorption membrane currently, attapulgite nanoparticles has the characteristics of low cost and environmental friendliness, which is more conducive to the large-scale practical application. The polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractograph, and it was confirmed that the attapulgite nanoparticles was successfully modified on the surface of the polypropylene adsorption membrane. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacities of polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles could reach 11.53 mg/g, 8.7 mg/g and 5.78 mg/g for cyromazine, malachite green and dagenan respectively within 10 s. In the case of the above three analytes, the minimum detected concentration could reach 0.02 mg/mL, and the relative standard deviation was about 10 %. At the same time, the adsorption performance of polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles did not decrease significantly after 50 cycles. A standard recovery of 76.8 % − 89.5 % and a relative standard deviation of 7.2 % − 15.2 % were obtained by using the polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles to adsorb cyromazine in cucumber skin samples, indicating that the polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles has the ability to treat complex samples.

The corrosion protection and ice-over delay of aluminum alloys have always been pressing issues. Lotus-inspired superhydrophobic materials show great potential in the field of corrosion prevention and delayed icing, but they are currently prone to failure due to wetting and adhesion by low surface tension liquids. In this paper, we constructed a superamphiphobic (superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) organosilane-grafted attapulgite (OG-ATP) coating on 5083 aluminum alloy substrates using ATP, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFAS) through hydrolysis-condensation reaction and spray-coating technique. The coating exhibits contact angles greater than 150º and sliding angles less than 10º for water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, peanut oil, and even n-hexadecane with surface tension@20 ºC of 27.5 mN/m. Through studying surface morphologies , chemical compositions, electrochemical behaviors, self-cleaning, and anti-icing performance, it was found that the R ct and |Z| 0.01 Hz of the protected aluminum alloy increased by four orders of magnitude with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 99.99 %, demonstrating excellent anti-corrosion functionality. Additionally, icing test results at -5 °C, -10 °C, and -15 °C show that the prepared coating exhibits significant delayed icing performance. We believe that the integration of properties such as water-oil repellency, self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing will enable superamphiphobic materials to demonstrate enormous application prospects in various fields.

High-safety and high-performance separators with exceptional mechanical and thermal stability are highly desired for simultaneously providing fast ion transport channels and achieving uniform Li + flux distribution to suppress dendrite growth. In this work, nanofiber composite separators (PAF) are fabricated by the electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile and the subsequent coating with an inorganic hybrid of conductive Fe 3 O 4 spherical particles and non-conductive attapulgite (ATP) rod-shaped particles. The PAF composite separator exhibits superior ionic transport ability with high ionic conductivity of 1.07 mS/cm and Li + transference number of 0.56, which can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the nanofiber substrate and the hybrid coatings. The high porosity and excellent electrolyte wettability of the separator, as well as the octahedral and tetrahedral voids in Fe 3 O 4 , provide more storage space for Li + ; the oxygen vacancies in nanoparticles are prone to combine with solvent molecules, and the hydroxyl groups adsorb PF- 6, thereby effectively accelerating the migration of cations. The battery with the composite separator, therefore, maintains a discharge specific capacity of 90 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 1 C rate and has a discharge capacity of 83 mAh/g at 5 C. Together with the improved mechanical and thermal stability, the nanofiber composite separator exhibits great potential for the advancement of lithium batteries with high safety and high performance.

In order to improve the adsorption capacity of attapulgite, a novel composite adsorbent EDTA/CS-ATP was synthesized by integrating attapulgite (ATP), chitosan (CS), and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) by hydrothermal carbonization and grafting method. Under optimized conditions, the composite adsorbent achieved a removal ratio of 92.46 % and an adsorption capacity of 66.31 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) removal. Characterizations revealed that introducing CS and EDTA to ATP enhanced the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions of ATP, which is beneficial for MB adsorption. Kinetic and thermodynamics studies showed that the adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, indicating a chemisorption-driven monolayer binding mechanism. Hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and π-π interactions were identified as the key mechanisms contributing to MB capture. Notably, compared to traditional EDTA-based materials mainly used for heavy metal removal, the EDTA/CS-ATP composite has the multifunctional sites to match the cationic and aromatic structure of MB, exhibiting highly selective and efficient MB removal. This work presents an environmentally friendly and scalable strategy for treating wastewater contaminated with cationic dyes, offering a promising solution for practical applications in water purification.

To address the problem of excessive Cd (II) content in selenium-rich soil and water in Enshi region, this experiment utilized ion imprinting for selective adsorption of cadmium, which made the separation of selenium and cadmium possible. A novel attapulgite-based Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer (AF-IIP) was prepared with the surface imprinting technique, using magnetic attapulgite as the matrix and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPS) as the functional monomer. SEM, XRD, VSM, FT-IR and EDS elemental analysis were performed to confirm the structural transformations and compositional changes of the materials during the preparation process. The optimal pH, optimal time, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms during the adsorption of Cd (II) by ion-imprinted polymers were investigated. The experimental results showed that the optimum pH of the adsorption process was 6.0 and the maximum adsorption amount was 49.0 mg·g −1 . In the presence of competitive ions, the adsorption capacity of AF-IIP for Cd (II) is much larger than that of Se ions, indicating that AF-IIP has good selectivity. The adsorption reaction conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model and kinetic data were more suitable to be explained by pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, XPS analysis confirmed that Cd(II) adsorption primarily occurs via interactions with thiol (-SH) groups. In addition, regeneration tests have shown that AF-IIP was reusable and stable.

Abstract To overcome the brittleness and the dry shrinkage of silica aerogels, natural attapulgite nanofiber is successfully used as reinforcement for monolithic silica aerogel composites possessing ultralow density and excellent thermal insulation properties. The attapulgite/silica aerogel composites are obtained by dispersing the acid-treated attapulgite fibers in silica sol, followed by aging and ambient pressure drying. The acid treatment of attapulgite fibers obviously improved the adhesion between silica aerogel and attapulgite fibers surface. The microstructure analysis showed that silica particles firmly adhered to the surface of the rod shaped crystal of attapulgite fibers, which played a supporting role as structure skeleton and substantially improved the integrity and mechanical strength of the aerogel composites. No obvious variation of the mesoporous silica structure was observed since the nanosized attapulgite fibers are effectively incorporated into the network, instead of separated into small fragments as pure aerogel shown. As the fiber content increased, the density decreased to 0.163 cm 3 /g first and then increased, while the thermal conductivity increased slightly with ranging between 0.0198 and 0.0228 W m −1 K −1 . The aerogel samples with compression strength varying from 0.8 to 2.5 MPa were obtained. All these promising characteristics indicated that ATP/silica aerogel composites have diverse applications, especially in heat preservation field. Graphical Abstract

In this study, the nanocomposites are prepared which used polyamide 6 (PA6) composite as matrix, melamine cyanurate (MCA) as fire retardant and attapulgite (AT) as synergistic agent. The mathematical model between MCA content, AT content, and limited oxygen index (LOI) is established by multiple linear regression fitting. The polymer materials are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Through response surface methodology, the important variables (polymerization time, the content of MCA, and the content of AT) affecting the mechanical strength of composites are modeled. Results demonstrate that when the t is 0.6 h, the AT content is 6.2%, and the MCA content is 11.5%, the mechanical properties of the PA6/MCA/AT composite are up to 44.81 MPa, and the sample passes the UL-94 V-0 flammability rating, and the LOI reaches 27.9%. Therefore, polymers with highly effective flame retardancy and optimal mechanical properties are prepared. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 137 , 47298.

Brittleness and low fracture toughness severely limit the performance of rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composites in extreme environments. To address this, we developed a modified filler (mATP@PMMA) by first modifying attapulgite (ATP) with a titanate coupling agent (TCA), which then served as a molecular bridge to graft polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) onto the ATP surface via emulsion polymerization. This design promotes uniform dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion, effectively dissipating energy and thereby enhancing mechanical properties. Experimental results show that adding only 3 phr of mATP@PMMA significantly improves the processability, thermal stability, and dynamic mechanical performance of the PVC composite. At room temperature, tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength increase by 26.8%, 32.5%, and 23.1%, respectively. Even at −20 °C, the composite maintained high strength and exhibited considerable resilience, with SEM fractography clearly revealing effective interfacial interactions. While the impact strength of PVC drops by 48.4% at low temperature, the composite with PVC/mATP@PMMA shows only a 14.8% reduction. As a highly efficient performance additive, mATP@PMMA demonstrates considerable potential for manufacturing high performance composites.

Nanoplastics have raised significant concerns due to their potential ecological risks and contamination of soil-groundwater environments. Previous studies have investigated the effects of clay minerals on nanoplastics migration, but focused on single minerals and pure quartz sand media, without involving the unique layer-chain structure of attapulgite (ATP) and the differential impacts of humic acid (HA) and oxalic acid (OA) on migration behavior. This study investigates the migration mechanisms of carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanoplastics (CPSNPs) in saturated porous media containing a representative natural mineral- ATP. A combination of characterization techniques, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction theory, one-dimensional column transport experiments and numerical transport model was employed. The effects of environmental factors (ATP content, flow velocity, pH, electrolytes, and organic acid) on CPSNPs migration were systematically investigated. Results suggest that ATP, with its rough surface, abundant pores, and high specific surface area, significantly enhances CPSNPs retention through adsorption and “blocking effect”. As ATP content increased from 1 % to 9 %, the mass recovery rate of CPSNPs decreased from 85.39 % to 55.97 %. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that CPSNPs adsorbed onto ATP without significant chemical structural changes, primarily through physical adsorption. Additionally, HA and OA were found to influence CPSNPs migration differently, with HA enhancing and OA inhibiting CPSNPs movement. Divalent cations (Ca 2+ ) strongly hinder CPSNPs migration compared to monovalent cations (Na + ), due to stronger charge neutralization and aggregation effects. The findings can provide essential insights into CPSNPs transport and retention in natural porous media.

In this work, attapulgite-based anode materials with different polyacrylonitrile contents were fabricated. The effect of polyacrylonitrile contents on electrochemical performances of the anode materials was systematically investigated. The optimal attapulgite/polyacrylonitrile ratio for the anode material was selected via comparing with electrochemical specific capacity at the same current density. It was shown that the specific capacity of the sample with 20 wt% polyacrylonitrile could reach a maximum value of 446.5 mAh g −1 at the same current density. Furthermore, the effect of carbonization temperatures on electrochemical properties of the anode materials with 20 wt% polyacrylonitrile was investigated. The structural features of the carbonized samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The discharge specific capacity of the anode material carbonized at 800 °C reached the maximum value of 446.5 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 at the 50th cycle. The coulombic efficiency of the AT-based anode material carbonized at 800 °C was 99.8% at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 at the 300th cycle. The anode material carbonized at 800 °C with a mass loading of 0.85 mg cm −2 had excellent electrochemical conductivity and rate capability.

The efficient synthesis of useful primary amines via reductive amination of biomass-based aldehydes and ketones over earth-abundant base metal catalysts is an attractive biomass value-adding technology yet facing lots of challenges. Herein, natural attapulgite (ATP) was applied as support for the fabrication of active Ni catalysts with different Ni loadings (5–30 wt%) by the deposition-precipitation method. The Ni/ATP-550 catalyst with 10–15 wt% Ni loadings was found to present the highest catalytic performance for the synthesis of valuable 5-amino-1-pentanol (5-AP) via reductive amination of biofurfural-derived 2-hydroxytetrahydropyran among a variety of commonly used oxide supports loaded Ni catalysts, as well as ATP supported nickel catalysts with other loadings, achieving 5-AP yield up to 94%. The intrinsic activity of the Ni/ATP catalysts was found to depend strongly on the Ni 0 crystallite size and Ni 0 fraction of the catalysts, which generally increased with increasing Ni 0 crystallite size and fraction, owing probably to the hydrogenation of imine intermediate is a structure-sensitive reaction. The efficient 10Ni/ATP-550 catalyst also exhibited good activity and stability in the reductive amination of several other biomass-derived aldehydes and ketones to their corresponding primary amines with good to excellent yields (81%–99%). This work provided a clean and efficient natural ATP-supported non-noble metal nickel-based catalytic system for the reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones to synthesize high-value-added primary amines, which could be a promising candidate for the industrial production of amines.

Effective removal of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from the environment is essential for the ecosystem and human health. Reductive debromination of PBDEs by nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) has become an important technology. However, the agglomeration and low persistence catalytic activity of nZVI particles have become urgent problems to be improved. Herein, we report the first application of a new organo-attapulgite (OA) supported Fe/Pd nanoparticles (OA-Fe/Pd) composite for decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) removal. BDE209 was efficiently removed using OA-Fe/Pd with a reaction rate that was 9.97 times greater than that of the nZVI due to the synergetic effect of support material OA and Pd loading. OA could prevent nZVI particles from agglomeration and adsorb BDE209 molecules to its surface. Pd could supply atomic hydrogen and also prevent the oxidation of nZVI particles. The degradation of BDE209 by OA-Fe/Pd was affected by many factors and followed pseudo first-order kinetics. The degradation of BDE209 by OA-Fe/Pd underwent a stepwise debromination manner with the H-transfer dominant mechanism. BDE209 (25 mg∙L -1 ) could be degraded to penta-BDEs to diphenyl ether (DE) by 3.0 g∙L -1 OA-Fe/Pd within 240 min under neutral condition. This study provides some inspiration for improving the removal efficiency of PBDEs with nZVI-based materials.
