Determination of squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA) in human serum plays an important role in diagnosis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma. In this work, Au/Ag/Au core/double shell nanoparticles (Au/Ag/Au NPs) were prepared by a simple approach and were used as novel enzyme-mimetic labels for development of a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for SCCA. The nanostructure of Au/Ag/Au NPs could be well confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and UV–vis spectra. Au NPs decorated mercapto-functionalized graphene sheets (Au@SH-GS) were used as platform for immobilization of primary antibody (Ab 1 ), while Au/Ag/Au NPs were employed as labels of secondary antibody (Ab 2 ). Due to the excellent electrocatalytic activity of Au/Ag/Au NPs towards the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), electrochemical amperometric responses to SCCA were achieved after the immuno-reaction. Under optimum conditions, the electrochemical immunosensor exhibited a wide linear range from 0.5 pg/mL to 40 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.18 pg/mL for SCCA. The designed immunosensor displayed an excellent analytical performance with good reproducibility, high selectivity and stability.

Practical gas sensing application requires sensors to quantify target analytes with high sensitivity and reproducibility. However, conventional surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor lacks reproducibility and quantification arising from variations of "hot spot" distribution and measurement conditions. Here, a ratio-dependent SERS sensor was developed for quantitative label-free gas sensing. Au@Ag-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were filtered onto anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) forming Au@Ag-Au@AAO SERS substrate. 4-MBA was encapsulated in the gap of Au@Ag-Au and served as the internal standard (IS) to calibrate SERS signal fluctuation for improved quantification ability. Combined with headspace sampling method, SO 2 residue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be extracted and captured on the immediate vicinity of Au@Ag-Au surface. The intensity ratio I 613 cm −1 /I 1078 cm −1 showed excellent linearity within the range of 0.5 mg/kg-500 mg/kg, demonstrating superior quantification performance for SO 2 detection. Signals for concentration as low as 0.05 mg/kg of SO 2 could be effectively collected, much lower than the strictest limit 10 mg/kg in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Combined with a handheld Raman spectrometer, handy and quantitative TCM quality evaluation in aspect of SO 2 residue was realized. This ratiometric SERS sensor functioned well in rapid on-site SO 2 quantification, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and simple operability.

As a powerful toxin that could cause fatal death, the detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) has gained much attention in the fields of environmental and food sciences. In this study, an internal standard (IS) aptasensor was synthesized through a facile and scalable method to enhance the sensitivity and quantativity of OTA detection. The substrates were formed through hybridization of modified aptamers on Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) and Au films at a silicon surface. Incorporated with 4-ATP and 4-NTP as an internal standard, OTA recognition of such aptamers could cause NP release and signal losses. Utilizing the strong peaks at 1078 and 1335 cm–1, which represent 4-ATP and 4-NTP, respectively, the intensity ratio of I1078/I1335 could delegate the OTA concentration in a ratiometric manner. Therefore, the highest ratio of I1078/I1335 represents the lowest concentration of OTA, and a lower ratio means a higher OTA concentration. Quantitatively, the high consistency for OTA detection was achieved through correction of signal losses by IS references with an R2 of 0.993 and RSD of 0.94%, and the OTA detection limit of 5 pM was achieved. Herein, such an IS aptasensor provides a reliable and scalable detection platform for various molecules in a continuous and high-throughput manner and holds great promise in future quantitative SERS measurements.

There is a challenge to obtain an ultrasensitive and rapid approach to detect bacteria and identify resistance. As a powerful bioanalytical tool, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in bacterial detection have attracted increasing attentions. Herein, we developed a SERS-active [email protected] core-shell nanorod ( [email protected] ) tag platform for ultrasensitive bacteria detection and antibiotic-susceptibility testing (AST). The platform established that surface enhanced Raman scattered Rhodamine 6G (R6G) absorption at 1517 cm −1 had a good linearity (RI = 3865 + 193logC; R 2 = 0.97) with logarithm of E. coli concentration over a range of 10 7 –10 2 CFU (colony forming unit)/mL with limit of detection as low 10 2 CFU/mL. When E. coli was exposed to ampicillin at minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, 4 μg/mL), Raman spectroscopy showed the obvious variation between ampicillin-susceptible E. coli (Amp − - E. coli ) and the ampicillin-resistant E. coli (Amp + - E. coli ). Combined with principal component analysis (PCA) statistical analysis, the Raman intensity variation mentioned above allows to obtain rapid antibiotic resistance testing (<3.5 h). In addition, E.coli spiked into blood from C57BL/6 mice can be identified clearly, indicating the potential for point-of-care diagnostics.

Contamination of mycotoxins has been a general problem of food safety and afflicts people all around the world. Ochratoxin A (OTA), an abundant and representative food-contaminating mycotoxin, has a detrimental effect on our health. Herein, an ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) aptasensor was fabricated for OTA detection. Au (core) @Au-Ag (shell) nanogapped nanostructures ( [email protected] NNSs) were coupled with Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 MNPs) by OTA aptamer and its complementary DNA sequence . The distance between two nanoparticles become far away in presence of the OTA due to the affinity of aptamer. This effect can obviously bring about the change of Raman intensity which can be used for the detection of OTA. Compared with pure metal nanoparticles, [email protected] NNSs can effectively enhance the Raman intensity of Raman signal molecule (4-MBA) via the ultrasmall nanogap, which contribute to the sensitivity of the sensor system. Additionally, the utilization of Fe 3 O 4 MNPs offers a green, economical and facile technology to capture targets from solution. The specially modified aptamer and its complementary strand establish a bridge connecting between [email protected] NNSs and Fe 3 O 4 MNPs. In this study, OTA concentration with a linear range of 0.01–50 ng mL −1 and the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.004 ng mL −1 . The proposed SERS aptasensor can combine both of these above type of materials and provide a rapid, sensitive, and low-cost methodology for numerous future applications of point-of-care diagnostics.

A new electrochemical method has been proposed for the simultaneous determination of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and propyl gallate (PG) in food matrices based on enzymatic biosensors . Spiny Au-Pt nanotubes (SAP NTs) was first synthesized and demonstrated to exhibit intrinsic peroxidase and catalase-like activity. The structure of SAP NTs provides large surface area and favorable medium for electron transfer , on which HRP were immobilized and acted as enzymatic biosensor for the simultaneous detection of BHA and PG. The results revealed that BHA and PG both have well-defined oxidation waves with peak potentials of 624 and 655 mV, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the method behaved satisfactory analytical performance towards BHA and PG with a wide linear range of 0.3–50 mg L −1 and 0.1–100 mg L −1 , as well as a detection limit of 0.046 mg L −1 and 0.024 mg L −1 (3σ/slope), respectively. Besides, the proposed method exhibits good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility, providing an alternative to fabricate electrode and construct sensitive biosensors.

A facile method for synthesizing hollow Au/Pt nanostructures is reported; this strategy involves using small sized Au nanoparticles (NPs) as seeds and KI as growth modifier. Under polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and potassium iodide (KI), small sized Au NPs evolved to plate-like nanostructures due to Ostwald ripening. The nanoplates served as templates for selectively growing Pt on {110} facets. Under high temperature, I− was oxidized to I2 by O2. The formed I2 and KI etched Au on {111}, generating hollow nanostructures. Through adjusting the reaction conditions, dendrite sphere-like nanostructures could also be prepared. The prepared bimetallic Au/Pt nanostructures exhibited high catalytic performance compared with sphere-like Pt.

Graphical Facets : We first exploited a facet-heterojunction-based photothermocatalytic material CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl{110}-MnO x by respectively depositing CdS−Au on the {001} facets and MnO x on {110} facets of BiOCl nanosheets. This material exhibited excellent activity for toluene oxidation and ∼100 % selectivity from toluene to CO 2 under full-spectrum sunlight irradiation. There is a synergistic effect between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis. It is very essential to improve the activity and selectivity of photothermocatalysis (PTC) by tailoring the microstructures of photothermocatalytic materials. Herein, we exploit a facet-heterojunction strategy to fabricate photothermocatalysts, by which CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl{110}-MnO x is constructed by respectively depositing CdS−Au on the {001} facets and MnO x on {110} facets of BiOCl nanosheets. This material exhibits excellent activity for toluene oxidation and near 100 % selectivity from toluene to carbon dioxide under full-spectrum sunlight irradiation. The conversion rate of toluene under PTC condition is significantly enhanced by 47.5, 1.8 and 1.7 times compared with that of sole PC, TC and the sum of TC and PC. There is a synergistic effect between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis, in which the S-scheme photocatalyst CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl produces high-energy active species to activate toluene and accelerate the cycle conversion of lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancy in MnO x .

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates hold great potential for rapid food monitoring, but the inability to reconcile high enhancement, uniformity, and stability presents a critical trilemma for substrate design and practical applications. Here, inspired by the hierarchical structure of lychee, we developed an innovative "integrated balanced enhancement-protection" strategy, fabricating a lychee-like Au@Ag/Au nanoarray chip via a simple, uniform oil/water/oil (O/W/O) self-assembly technique. This design mimics the architecture of lychee: the outer Au layer, modeled after lychee’s peel, provides chemical protection; the inner Au@Ag layer, mirroring lychee’s seed and flesh, delivers strong plasmonic enhancement. The unique bilayer nanoarchitecture, featuring dense and vertically coupled plasmonic hotspots, ensures highly efficient electromagnetic (EM) field by Au-Ag synergistic effects. It demonstrates an analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of 2.30 × 10 6 , uniformity with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 6.55 %, and stability with 93.26 % signal retention over 60 days. When coupled with a universal pretreatment protocol to minimize matrix interference, the platform enables sensitive and reliable quantitative detection of three representative food additives, including potassium sorbate (PS), sodium benzoate (SB), and sodium saccharin (SS) in complex fruit matrices. The limit of detection (LOD) for all analytes was below 75 mg/kg, substantially surpassing the national regulatory standards of China. Importantly, the chip demonstrated high recoveries (86.62–102.49 %) and low RSD (< 9 %) across multiple fruit types. Beyond food safety, this scalable, low-cost approach not only overcomes SERS substrate bottlenecks but also provides a viable field-deployable tool with broader implications for SERS-based analysis.

Bimetallic noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) are an emerging topic of metal clusters due to their distinguishing characteristics compared to monometallic clusters. Doping of different noble atoms in other clusters is an effective strategy for tailoring their functionalities for specific applications and synergistic effects. Obtaining single-heteroatom doping is desirable but still very challenging to date. Herein, 2,4-dimethylbenzenthiol (2,4-DMBT) protected Ag/Au alloy NCs (ca. 2-3 nm) were synthesized via a wet chemical one-pot process. The effect of the number of Au atoms in Ag NCs on their optical properties and bandgap was investigated. We found that the change of the absorption peak positions of the Ag NCs was influenced by the presence of Au atoms. Besides, we found that the HOMO-LUMO peak has appeared without a significant change in cluster size during synthesis. Ag/Au alloy NCs are characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron transmission microscopy (STEM).

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), due to their enzyme-like activity, can catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which can be used to reduce HAuCl 4 into gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Hg 2+ effectively decreases the catalytic ability of AuNCs to decompose H 2 O 2 by the interactions between Au + on surface of AuNCs and Hg 2+ . In a system containing AuNCs, H 2 O 2 , and HAuCl 4 , increasing the Hg 2+ concentration prompts a color change from purple to red of the solution of as-synthesized AuNPs, which results from the increase in residual H 2 O 2 after decomposition by AuNCs. Based on this principle, a novel colorimetric method for ultrasensitive detection of mercury ions was developed in this work. AuNPs synthesized by a one-step method without modification were used to directly detect mercury ions in lake and river water samples. The detection limit of the present method was determined to be 8:9 pM with a linear response range of 0.1 nM–10 μM, which is much lower than the standard value defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The method not only possesses advantages of convenience and simplicity, but also is promising for application in real samples.

Ulinastatin (UTI) is a glycoprotein extracted and purified from human urine. As a protease inhibitor, it mainly functions to inhibit the activity of various proteases such as trypsin and elastase, while also exerting anti-inflammatory effects and protecting tissues and organs. Therefore, the detection of UTI is of great significance in guiding clinical medication, evaluating disease severity, monitoring treatment effects, and judging prognosis. Based on CeO 2 :Eu 3+ nanomaterials and luminol molecules, a dual-mode biosensor integrating electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and fluorescence (FL) was constructed for the sensitive detection of UTI. CeO 2 :Eu 3+ significantly enhanced the ECL intensity of luminol; combined with a sandwich-type immunoreaction, this enabled sensitive and selective ECL detection of UTI. Meanwhile, FL detection of UTI was realized by leveraging the change in the intensity of luminol’s characteristic emission peak in FL. Moreover, this dual-mode detection strategy can effectively improve detection accuracy, enabling the detection of UTI with high sensitivity, accuracy, and selectivity. Experimental results showed that the ECL sensor exhibited good linearity for UTI with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.28 pM in the concentration range of 10 -11 –10 -5 M. The FL sensor exhibited good linearity for UTI with a LOD of 0.026 nM in the linear range of 10 -10 – 10 -4 M. When this dual-mode biosensor was applied to the detection of UTI in serum samples, the results of both detection modes were satisfactory.
