Bi/Bi 2 MoO 6 /TiO 2 NTs photocatalysts were synthesized on the basis of TiO 2 NTs by a solvothermal method using glucose as the reducing agent. The removal of organic dyes such as RhB and MB and heavy metal ions like Cr(VI) were used to simulate industrial wastewater for the photocatalytic activity assessment of Bi/Bi 2 MoO 6 /TiO 2 NTs. Na 2 S/Na 2 SO 3 solution was used as sacrificial agent to study the photocatalytic hydrogen generation performance of samples. The results showed that Bi 3+ was successfully reduced to metal Bi and deposited on the surface of Bi 2 MoO 6 . The removal efficiencies of RhB, MB and Cr(VI) reached 73.21%, 92.98% and 70.54%, respectively, which confirmed the excellent photocatalytic activity of samples. The photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of the sample was also remarkable and the hydrogen generation rate reached 173.41 μmol·h −1 ·cm −2 . The active species and photocatalytic mechanism of pollutant degradation and hydrogen generation were proposed based on the photoelectrochemical data. The excellent photocatalytic performances of Bi/Bi 2 MoO 6 /TiO 2 NTs will exhibit prospective guidance for the preparation and photocatalytic water splitting of bismuth-based photocatalysts.

The mild, fast and green removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater has already attracted extensive attention due to the severe acute toxicity and carcinogenicity of Cr(VI). At present work, Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunctions were constructed by facile solvothermal assembly and in situ anion exchange methods for visible light-driven efficient photocatalytic removal of Cr(VI). The structure-activity relationship, photoelectrochemical properties, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the controllable construction of the heterostructure significantly expanded the light response range and remarkably enhanced the light absorption capacity. In particular, the unique charge transfer mechanism of this S-scheme heterojunction is conducive to promoting efficient separation of photogenerated charges and thus enhancing the photocatalytic performance. The results show that the total efficiency of Cr(VI) removal by the developed Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 MoO 6 heterojunction under visible light irradiation is 98.5% within 6 min, with a k value of 0.466 min −1 . This work provides a new route with enormous promise to construct bismuth-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for clean and efficient environmental remediation.

Defect engineering advantages include regulating the band structure of photocatalytic materials, inhibiting the recombination of photoelectron-hole pairs, and promoting the conversion of photogenerated electrons into active radicals. In this paper, bismuth molybdate (Bi 2 MoO 6 ) photocatalysts with double vacancies (V Bi-O -BMO) were prepared by solvothermal and ionic eutectic solvent methods. EPR, TEM, and XPS results confirmed the successful construction of oxygen and bismuth vacancies on Bi 2 MoO 6 . The photocatalytic performance of the prepared catalysts was investigated by photodegradation of levofloxacin hydrochloride (LVF) under visible light. The double vacancies markedly enhanced the photocatalytic properties of Bi 2 MoO 6 , with the photodegradation rate of V Bi-O -BMO reaching 88.36 % for 40 mg/L LVF within 60 min. Kinetic studies have demonstrated that the reaction rate constant of V Bi-O -BMO can reach 0.0351 min −1 , which is 3.2 times higher than that of bulk-BMO. This can be attributed to the favorable synergistic effect of oxygen and bismuth double vacancies. V O not only captures oxygen and electrons, facilitating the generation of superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ), but also elevates the conduction band position and boosts the reduction capability of Bi 2 MoO 6 . V Bi not only captures photogenerated holes (h + ) to directly impact LVF degradation, but also promotes interfacial charge transfer and inhibits the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the intermediates and degradation pathways of LVF photodegradation were surmised based on the LC-MS analysis. The reaction mechanism of LVF photodegradation by V Bi-O -BMO was elucidated through the application of the free radical pathway. This study demonstrates a methodology for the creation of double vacancies in catalysts and the significant potential of V Bi-O -BMO for the remediation of antibiotic residues in water under visible light.

Bismuth (Bi)-based electrode has aroused tremendous interest in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) on account of its low cost, high electronic conductivity, low charge voltage and high theoretical capacity. However, the rapid capacity fading and poor lifespan induced by the normalized volume expansion (up to ~ 406%) and serious aggregation of Bi during cycling process hinder its application. Herein, bismuth molybdate (Bi 2 MoO 6 ) microsphere assembled by 2D nanoplate units is successfully prepared by a facile solvothermal method and demonstrated as a promising anode for PIBs. The unique microsphere structure and the self-generated potassium molybdate (K-Mo-O species) during the electrochemical reactions can effectively suppress mechanical fracture of Bi-based anode originated from the volume variation during charge/discharge of the battery. As a result, the Bi 2 MoO 6 microsphere without hybridizing with any other conductive carbon matrix shows superior electrochemical performance, which delivers a high reversible capacity of 121.7 mAh·g −1 at 100 mA·g −1 over 600 cycles. In addition, the assembled perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA)//Bi 2 MoO 6 full-cell coupled with PTCDA cathode demonstrates the potential application of Bi 2 MoO 6 microsphere. Most importantly, the phase evolution of Bi 2 MoO 6 microsphere during potassiation/depotassiation process is successfully deciphered by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technologies, which reveals a combination mechanism of conversion reaction and alloying/dealloying reaction for Bi 2 MoO 6 anode. Our findings not only open a new way to enhance the performance of Bi-based anode in PIBs, but also provide useful implications to other alloy-type anodes for secondary alkali-metal ion batteries.

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a toxic and pungent gas with significant implications for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and human health. Therefore, the development of high-performance sensors for NH 3 detection at room temperature is of great necessity. This work develops a Bi 2 MoO 6 /Ti 3 C 2 T x 2D/2D heterostructure-based NH 3 gas sensor. The material demonstrated outstanding NH 3 sensing characteristics, involving high sensitivity (R a /R g =25.6 at 100 ppm), quick response time (21 s), and quick recovery time (72 s) at room temperature. Meanwhile, the sensor demonstrated prominent stability, repeatability, humidity-resistant, and an optimal operating temperature for NH 3 detection. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations were applied to examine the adsorption behavior of NH 3 on the Bi 2 MoO 6 /Ti 3 C 2 T X surface, which shed light on the sensing process. Additionally, a prototype detection system was developed to monitor NH 3 emissions from spoiled fish samples, illustrating how this sensor could be applied to monitor food safety.

Selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aromatic amines using solar energy is a green route, but as a typical two-phase reaction, it is limited by sluggish mass transfer across the oil-water interface and the difficulty in regulating the wettability of photocatalysts. Herein, we propose a surfactant in-situ modification strategy to construct ultrathin hydrophobic Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets with Br doping and abundant oxygen vacancies (BMO-15) by enabling interstitially doped Br − interact with cetyltrimethylammonium cation (CTA + ) via Coulomb force to achieve hydrophobic modification and promote the formation of surface oxygen vacancies driven by maintaining electroneutrality. The constructed Pickering emulsion interfacial catalytic system stabilized by BMO-15 photocatalyst achieves 92% nitrobenzene (NB) conversion and 99% aniline selectivity within 4 h under 420 nm light irradiation without noble metals, significantly exceeding non-emulsion (36%) and BMO-0 emulsion (40%) systems. The excellent performance arises from the emulsion interfacial catalytic system, which boosts interfacial mass transfer efficiency and facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the doped Br − and oxygen vacancies facilitate NB adsorption and activation, narrow the bandgap structure, and broaden the visible-light absorption. This work thus not only provides a versatile platform for designing high-performance photocatalysts with tunable hydrophobicity and defect sites, but also unveils oil-water interfacial engineering as a key driver for two-phase photocatalytic performance enhancement. Baicalein (BAI), exhibits diverse pharmacological activities, making its accurate and sensitive detection crucial for clinical and pharmaceutical applications. To address the need for highly sensitive and precise detection of BAI, a novel composite electrochemical sensor Bi 2 MoO 6 /GO/GCE was developed. The electrochemical analysis revealed a synergistic interplay between the catalytic properties of Bi 2 MoO 6 and the exceptional conductivity of graphene oxide (GO), resulting in the sensor exhibiting remarkable sensitivity (1.27 μA μM −1 ) and a low detection limit (0.05 μM) within the BAI concentration range of 0.1–10 μM. Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that BAI undergoes a two-electron, two-proton oxidation process at 0.2 V (vs. SCE, saturated calomel electrode). Kinetic assessments confirmed that the electrode process is governed by a combined diffusion/adsorption mechanism. Notably, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that neutral BAI molecules (HA state) exhibit the highest adsorption energy (E ads = −4.01 eV) and the most substantial charge transfer (Δq = 1.29 e) on the Bi 2 MoO 6 surface, offering a molecular-level rationale for the observed optimal catalytic activity at pH 6.0. The sensor demonstrated outstanding reproducibility, long-term stability (signal decay < 3% over 15 days) and successful quantification in human serum samples. This study offers a robust sensing platform for monitoring drug metabolism through an integrated materials-performance-mechanism approach.

The environmental benefits of photocatalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) critically depend on the selective conversion of NO to nitrate (NO 3 − ) rather than to toxic by-products like nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). However, conventional photocatalysts suffer from low carrier separation efficiency and insufficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in low selectivity of NO 3 − and high levels of toxic by-products. To address this issue, this study incorporates sulfur into thin-layer Bi 2 MoO 6 to induce charge rearrangement, precisely regulate electron transfer pathways, and promote the generation of targeted ROS. Experimental results showed that the S-doping Bi 2 MoO 6 catalyst exhibited exceptional photocatalytic performance, achieving 71.2 % NO removal efficiency, 93.1 % NO 3 − selectivity, a low NO₂ by-product concentration (43.2 ppb), and good cycle stability. Combining electron spin resonance (ESR) and ROS quenching experiments, the S-doping mediated electron transfer mechanism and ROS dominated by 1 O 2 were revealed, and the synergistic effect between surface electron enrichment and O 2 activation was elucidated. Theoretical calculation indicated that S 2− could act as electron capture centers to promote directional transfer of electrons by the strengthen Bi S covalent interaction, achieving high chemical adsorption activation of O 2 to trigger 1 O 2 generation. This research provides a novel strategy for steering ROS generation through directed electron transfer engineering, advancing the development of efficient and eco-friendly photocatalysts for air pollution remediation.

In this article, a green pigment Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ (x = 0.1–0.5) co-doped with Pr and W was developed using high temperature solid-phase synthesis method. The microstructure, color performance, and optical characteristics of the novel pigment was analyzed using x-ray diffraction instrument (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), L∗ a∗ b∗ color date, and ultraviolet–visible–near infrared light spectrophotometer. The results indicate that all the samples possess a monoclinic structure, characterized by the space group P21/c(14). Compared to Bi 2-x Pr x MoO 6+δ doped solely with Pr 6 O 11 , the Pr/W co-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 pigment demonstrates superior green coloration. The solar reflectance in the near-infrared region of all pigment samples exceeds 80 %, highest value reaches 92.82 %. In thermal insulation tests, the temperature difference between the Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ pigment coating and a blank galvanized sheet reaches up to 10.3 °C after 60 min under infrared lamp irradiation. The color difference Δ E∗ of the pigment powder after immersion in acid and alkali solution and high-temperature calcination are less than 5, indicating good chemical stabilities in acidic, alkaline and high-temperature environments. To our knowledge, Bi 1.95-x Pr x W 0.05 MoO 6+δ has the highest reflectivity among green pigments without toxic metals.

S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a promising strategy to overcome the limitations of conventional systems by enabling efficient charge transfer while preserving strong redox capability. In this study, a novel flower-like In-TiO 2 @Bi 2 MoO 6 S-scheme heterojunction was developed via a simple hydrothermal synthesis for visible-light-driven photocatalytic desulfurization of H 2 S. The optimized In-TiO 2 -0.4@Bi 2 MoO 6 composition (molar ratio of In-TiO 2 to Bi 2 MoO 6 = 0.4) achieved complete H 2 S removal within 120 min under visible-light irradiation, exhibiting outstanding activity, operational stability, and adaptability to various desulfurization conditions. Mechanistic investigations using VB-XPS, UPS, ESR, DRIFTS and DFT calculations confirmed that the S-scheme configuration accelerated photoinduced charge separation, reduced electron migration distances, and maintained a high redox potential, thereby promoting efficient generation of reactive oxygen species for sulfur conversion. The synergistic interaction between In-TiO 2 and Bi 2 MoO 6 provides a robust platform for efficient, selective, and durable desulfurization under mild conditions. These findings offer a mechanistic framework for designing next-generation S-scheme photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy-related applications.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into value-added fuels is an appealing route to store solar energy while mitigating carbon emissions, yet achieving efficient and highly selective hydrocarbon formation in pure water remains challenging. Herein, we report a dopant co-engineering strategy by constructing Ni-doped Bi 2 MoO 6 with abundant oxygen vacancies (Ni x BMO-O V ). An ethylene glycol-mediated synthesis enables vacancy-rich Bi O environments and exposes abundant active sites, thereby strengthening CO 2 adsorption and accelerating interfacial charge transfer to facilitate hydrogenation toward CH 4 . Under simulated solar irradiation using pure H 2 O as the sole proton source, the optimized Ni 0.15 BMO delivers a CH 4 evolution rate of 45.0 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with an exceptional CH 4 selectivity of 99.1%. Ni incorporation and O V modulate the local electronic structure and charge distribution, thereby affecting the adsorption and activation of CO 2 and intermediates toward the target CH 4 product. This work provides an effective synergistic strategy involving Ni incorporation and oxygen vacancies for regulating electronic structure and reaction pathways toward efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

A 3D Bi 2 MoO 6 @Black-TiO 2 heterojunction photoelectrode was successfully fabricated. • Interfacial regulation induces Type-II band alignment and a built-in electric field. • Enhanced charge separation promotes generation of •OH and 1 O 2 reactive species. • The optimized electrode achieves 92.3% PEC degradation of KN-R dye. A Bi 2 MoO 6 @B-TiO 2 composite photoelectrode was successfully fabricated via a sequential hydrothermal-hydrogenation-solvothermal process. The three-dimensional network architecture constructed from ultrathin Bi 2 MoO 6 nanosheets and black-TiO 2 (B-TiO 2 ) nanowire arrays achieves uniform interfacial chemical distribution, integrating the merits of each component and endowing the electrode with low charge‑transfer resistance, favorable charge‑transport kinetics, and more accessible electroactive sites for PEC reactions. Band structure analysis suggests the possible formation of a Type-II heterojunction between B-TiO 2 and Bi 2 MoO 6 . Upon photoexcitation, this heterojunction can drive the migration of photogenerated electrons from Bi 2 MoO 6 to B-TiO 2 and holes in the opposite direction, effectively suppressing charge carrier recombination while promoting the generation of dominant reactive species such as •OH and ¹O₂. In photoelectrocatalytic degradation experiments of reactive brilliant blue KN-R, the optimized electrode achieves a removal rate of 92.3%, significantly higher than the sum of its photocatalytic and electrocatalytic performances, and maintains 78.9% activity after five cycles. This work provides a feasible interfacial regulation strategy for constructing high-performance photoelectrodes. Download: Download high-res image (324KB) Download: Download full-size image
