The BiOBr/Bi2WO6/2K-g-C3N4 tri-heterojunction photocatalyst efficiently catalyzes the degradation of gaseous formaldehyde

Yuxin Ma,Xue Zhan,Yiqing Han,Wenjie Cui,Xue Ye,Jie Li

The photocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) to CO 2 and H 2 O is a key method for the green degradation of gaseous HCHO. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is widely studied for its stability, non-toxicity, and low cost, but its small specific surface area often leads to electron-hole recombination, limiting its photocatalytic efficiency. This study addresses this by preparing K-doped g-C 3 N 4 via thermal polymerization and synthesising a flower-like spherical BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 /2K-g-C 3 N 4 ternary heterojunction catalyst using hydrothermal and hydrolytic precipitation methods. The catalyst demonstrated a 96.00 % photocatalytic degradation efficiency for gaseous HCHO within 5 h, reaching 90.67 % at just 2 h, highlighting its superior charge separation capability. Characterization revealed that the flower-like morphology enhances light absorption by exposing more active sites, while the K-doped g-C 3 N 4 forms a double Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOBr/Bi 2 WO 6 , effectively separating and retaining photogenerated electrons and holes. This structure significantly boosts the catalyst's redox capacity, thereby improving its photocatalytic performance for HCHO degradation.

The Highly Enhanced Efficiency of the Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 over Bi2WO6 Nanosheets by NaOH Microregulation

Chao Song,Yangang Sun,Li Zhang,Shuang Liu,Jinguo Wang,Wei An,Yong Men,Zhenrong Yan

The photoreduction of CO2to other products containing carbon through simulated photosynthesis is a promising area of research. However, given the complexity of the CO2photocatalytic reduction reaction, it is crucial to adjust the structure of the photocatalysts. The focus of this study was on creating NaOH-modified Bi2WO6nanosheet photocatalysts via a one-step hydrothermal route and using them to convert CO2into CO through photocatalytic reduction under the condition of not using an electron sacrifice agent. The results of characterizations and activity data showed that adding an appropriate amount of NaOH significantly improved the photoreduction activity of CO2, as seen in the BWO-2 catalyst. The efficiency of photocatalysts could be improved by tuning the band structure through the addition of an appropriate amount of alkali. This adjustment improves the separation of photogenerated carriers and controls the concentration of oxygen vacancy to reduce recombination. As a result, the photocurrent activity is highly enhanced, leading to better reduction performance compared to unmodified photocatalysts. In experiments, the CO yield of the modified photocatalyst BWO-2 remained above 90 μmol/g after four trials, indicating its effectiveness in reducing CO2. This study offers insights into the regulation of band structure in bismuth-based photocatalysts for efficient CO2reduction.Keywords:photocatalysis;band gap structure;sheet structure;alkali solution corrosion;CO2photoreduction

In-situ construction of Bi2WO6/Bi5O7I heterojunctions by room-temperature solvent method for efficient photocatalytic degradation

Menghan Pang,Dongbo Wang,Donghuan Meng,Rongjian Qiu,Chenghua Fan,Yuyan Feng,Juncheng Han

In the present work, the flower spherical Bi 2 WO 6 /Bi 5 O 7 I S-scheme heterojunction was constructed by solution precipitation under room-temperature for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and the working mechanism was investigated. As a special feature, 0.05 BWBOI performed the best photocatalytic capacity under visible light irradiation and was significantly able to degrade 98% of rhodamine B and 92% of bisphenol A in 90 min, whereas ciprofloxacin was degraded to 67% in 120 min. The composite structure was determined by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and BET characterization, while the electron migration direction and heterojunction scheme were determined by electrochemical and ESR characterization. Eventually, addition of Bi 2 WO 6 not only broadened the light absorption range of the composites, but also achieved the successful construction with Bi 2 WO 6 /Bi 5 O 7 I of S-scheme heterojunctions to accelerate the transport rate of photogenerated carriers. Finally, the current work presents a novel bismuth-based photocatalyst and offers new ideas for the facile preparation of semiconductor heterojunctions.

Design of Z-scheme polymeric carbon nitride/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions for efficient visible-light-driven antibiotic degradation

Feiran Jia,Qing Liu,Liyan Xie,Zhishan Luo,Jianhui Huang,Yingying He,Lirong Qiu

The use of heterojunctions with Z-scheme photocatalysts holds great promise for enhancing the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of antibiotics. In this study, we report the construction of a novel heterostructure by in-situ growth of the ultrathin polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) on the electrospun Bi 2 WO 6 nanofibers for improved photocatalytic tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light. Our gas–solid reaction strategy enables the formation of uniform and intimate junctions between the PCN nanosheets and the Bi 2 WO 6 nanofibers, resulting in a well-contacted interface that remarkably accelerates the separation and transfer of the photogenerated charge carriers. The optimized PCN/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalyst exhibits a significant TC degradation rate of 89.5 % under visible light, which is 1.4-fold and 2.0-fold of the pure PCN and Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts, respectively. Our innovative design philosophy opens up a new horizon for the development of efficient Z-scheme heterostructured photocatalysts for antibiotic degradation.

Insights on enhancing piezocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6@PDA homojunction from phase coexistence and electron transfer mediators

Zihan Kang,Mengshi Chen,Jiang Wu,Ni Qin,Dinghua Bao

Piezocatalytic technology with controllable generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is emerging in wastewater treatment. This study employed the synergetic regulation of functional surface and phase interface modification to effectively accelerate redox reaction in piezocatalytic process. We anchored the conductive polydopamine (PDA) onto Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) using template method, in which a small amount of Bi precipitation to induce partial phase transition of BWO from tetragonal to orthorhombic (t/o) in virtue of simple calcination. ROS traceability studies have identified the synergistic relationship between charge separation and transfer. Polarization in two-phase coexistence is intimately modulated by the orthorhombic relative central cation displacement. The orthorhombic phase with large electric dipole moment significantly promotes the generation of piezoresistive effect of intrinsic tetragonal BWO and optimizes the charge distribution. PDA further overcomes the obstruction of carrier migration at the phases interface to accelerate the generation rate of free radicals. Consequently, the superior rhodamine B (RhB) piezocatalytic degradation rate of 0.10 and 0.32 min −1 were delivered by t/o-BWO and t/o-BWO@PDA, respectively. This work reveals a feasible polarization enhancement strategy for the phase coexistence, and flexibly introduces the in-situ synthesized economical polymer conductive unit into the piezocatalysts.

Pompon-like Bi2WO6 hierarchical nanostructures: preparation and their application in photodegradation of norfloxacin and difloxacin hydrochloride

Wu Yuxin,Wu Weihao,Chen Qiang,Mao Yuqin,Zhu LuPing

Pompon-like Bi 2 WO 6 hierarchical nanostructures (BWO HNs) were obtained through a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. XRD, SEM, TEM, UV–vis spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption–desorption have been used to measure their microstructure and physicochemical properties. The photocatalytic properties of the products have been tested by photodegradation of norfloxacin (NOR) and difloxacin hydrochloride (DFL). The pompon-like BWO HNs samples exhibited excellent photoactivity in antibiotic removal, and as much as 97.67% of NOR and 93.87% of DFL could be efficiently degraded in 120 min. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the BWO HNs samples showed slight changes after five consecutive cycles, displaying good stability and good potential application value.

Synthesize, construction and enhanced performance of Bi2WO6/ZnS heterojunction under visible light: Experimental and DFT study

Liyun Yan,Jiahui Tang,Qing-an Qiao,Yunting Wang,Honglan Cai,Juan Jin,Hongwei Gao,Yanbin Xu

With the simple perovskite structure, Bi 2 WO 6 could be utilized as a modifier to overcome the low visible light response of the wide energy band photocatalyst ZnS. Flower-like Bi 2 WO 6 was simply synthesized by hydrothermal method and Bi 2 WO 6 /ZnS heterojunction was constructed via solvothermal reaction. The results showed that ZnS nanospheres were uniformly loaded on the flower-like structure, which was well kept under low concentration loading (≤20%ωt ZnS). The degradation of MB and Rh.B under visible light was used to measure the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. The degradation rates of MB and Rh.B by 20%ωt-Bi 2 WO 6 /ZnS were as high as 94.3% and 92.8%, respectively. Moreover, the degradation performance of photocatalyst still maintained 89.3% after 4 times recycling tests. The visible light absorption ability of modified ZnS was improved, and the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes was inhibited due to the formation of heterojunction. According to the data from density functional theory calculation, the composition of the valence band and conductive band of the Bi 2 WO 6 /ZnS system has been altered. The band gap of Bi 2 WO 6 /ZnS was reduced by roughly 1.12 eV compared to that of pure ZnS, and the work function analysis were in good agreement with the experimental results. Under light stimulation, electrons were transferred from Bi 2 WO 6 to ZnS to produce superoxide radicals which played key roles in the degradation reaction of dyes.

Optimizing Pd and Au-Pd decorated Bi2WO6 ultrathin nanosheets for photocatalytic selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols

Renshan Wang,Benxia Li,Yi Xiao,Xueqin Tao,Xintai Su,Xiaoping Dong

Ultrathin semiconductor nanosheets decorated with metallic nanoparticles (NPs) are promising in photocatalysis due to the multi-component interactions. The materials with a series of monometallic Pd and bimetallic Au-Pd NPs anchored on Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets were synthesized and developed as photocatalysts for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aromatic aldehyde. By optimizing the metallic contents, a typical sample of Au(0.25)Pd(0.25)-Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity among all the prepared photocatalysts including Au(0.5)-Bi 2 WO 6 , Pd( x )-Bi 2 WO 6 , Au( x )Pd( x )-Bi 2 WO 6 ( x represents the weight percentage of metal in the photocatalyst), along with the improved selectivity for producing benzaldehyde. The extended absorption in visible range, higher efficiency for the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers, and the superior ability for generating active radicals of Au(0.25)Pd(0.25)-Bi 2 WO 6 were demonstrated by DRS spectra, photoelectrochemical measurements, and ESR detection. The effect of the active species for selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols was proved to follow the order of h +  +  O 2 −  > h +  >>  O 2 − . Accordingly, a possible mechanism based on the interfacial cooperation between bimetallic Au-Pd NPs and Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets was proposed to illustrate the photocatalytic process, where the holes accumulated in Bi 2 WO 6 ultrathin nanosheets and O 2 − produced on metallic NPs synergistically promote the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols.

Enhanced photoactivity of Bi2WO6 by iodide insertion into the interlayer for water purification under visible light

Liang Wang,Zhiqiang Wang,Lili Zhang,Chun Hu

An iodine intercalated Bi 2 WO 6 was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method (160 °C, 2 h) and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The I 0.30 -Bi 2 WO 6 with an I/W molar ratio of 0.30 was highly effective for the degradation and mineralization of 2-chlorophenol, rhodamine B, bisphenol A, phenol, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole in water under visible light. Furthermore, the visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 was enhanced 3.1 times by the introduction of I − . The characterized results indicated that I − mainly inserted into the interlayer of Bi 2 WO 6 , expanding the layer spacing, favoring the efficient charge separation and transfer and prohibiting the recombination of the photogenerated electrons and holes. Specially, the XPS analysis indicated the I − ions substitued the absorbed oxygen to chemically bond in the layered Bi 2 WO 6 , resulting in the change of the electric charge distribution of Bi 2 WO 6 . Moreover, the BET surface area was increased from 25.2 m 2  g −1 for Bi 2 WO 6 to 66.7 m 2  g −1 for I 0.30 -Bi 2 WO 6 for more surface active sites. In addition, the band gap was narrowed for expanded optical absorption in the visible light region. ESR and radicals trapping experiments verified holes were the main active species for the degradation of organic pollutants. Simultaneously, the more positive potential of valence band in iodine intercalated Bi 2 WO 6 could enhance the oxidative power of the photogenerated holes, resulting in the efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants in water.

A novel Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 heterojunction photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization catalyst with high visible light-induced photocatalytic activity

Jing Wu,Jian Li,Jin Liu,Jin Bai,Lina Yang

A novel Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 heterojunction catalyst was successfully synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal process. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the corresponding XEDS energy mapping, UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra (UV-vis DRS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization performances of the prepared samples were studied with DBT as the model sulfur compound under visible light irradiation. Results indicated that the Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 exhibited considerably higher activity than pure Nb2O5 and Bi2WO6 and the desulfurization rate achieved 99% after visible light irradiation for 120 min. The catalyst also possessed good stability so that the desulfurization rate remained about 90% after seven cycle times and then the crystal structure of the catalyst has barely changed. Such enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the effective separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs on Nb2O5/Bi2WO6 heterojunction. Moreover, the synergistic effects of this photocatalytic oxidation and the extraction with the methanol as the solvent played an indispensable role in the desulfurization.

Effect of Bi2WO6 nanoflowers on the U(VI) removal from water: Roles of adsorption and photoreduction

Xin Zhong,Yuxin Liu,Tao Hou,Yuling Zhu,Baowei Hu

The efficient, safe, low-cost and easy to treatment of uranium(U(VI))-containing wastewater is still an imminent problem. Herein, the hierarchical hollow-spherical bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) was prepared by hydrothermal method, and sufficiently characterized by morphology and photoelectrochemical properties. In this research, we not only discussed the adsorption performance of U(VI), but also investigated the photocatalytic reduction performance of U(VI), so as to provide technical support for the treatment of U(VI)-containing wastewater in the future. The adsorption procedure complied with the pseudo-second-order model, implying surface complexation or chemisorption . Besides, under visible-light irradiation lasting for 600 min, the photoreduction removal rate of U(VI) was 53% (just adding 2.0 mg Bi 2 WO 6 ), without adding the h + scavenger, due to the harvest absorption of solar energy, hierarchically porous structure and synergic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis . Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism and photocatalytic reduction mechanism of Bi 2 WO 6 for U(VI) were revealed. The metal 3O and O3H bonds in Bi 2 WO 6 crystal were the active coordination sites for U(VI) adsorption, while •O 2 − and e - were the main active species for U(VI) photocatalytic reduction. Although the mechanisms of adsorption and photocatalytic reactions were different, there was a synergistic effect in the process of practical for application removing U(VI) by Bi 2 WO 6 . Consequently, the hierarchical nanosheets-assembled Bi 2 WO 6 microspheres could be considered as a good candidate for visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in radioactive wastewater treatment.

Novel Z-scheme In2S3/Bi2WO6 core-shell heterojunctions with synergistic enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Zuming He,Muhammad Saboor Siddique,Hanpei Yang,Yongmei Xia,Jiangbin Su,Bin Tang,Lina Wang,Li Kang,Zhengyi Huang

Semiconductor photocatalytic technology is an effective strategy to cope with the current environmental issues . Therefore, the development of low-cost and environment-friendly catalysts with high efficacy has become a research focus and emphasis. Herein, novel Z-scheme In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 core-shell structure composites were controllably prepared by template and hydrothermal route. Highly improved photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) over In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 core-shell composites was observed under visible-light (VL) irradiation (∼96.0%), which was 2.4 and 2.1 folds higher than that of In 2 S 3 and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. The excellent oxygen activation and catalytic performance was ascribed to the synergistic effects of built-in electric field to ensure easy charge exchange at the interface of In 2 S 3 and Bi 2 WO 6 , Z-scheme charge transfer path and the extended range of VL absorption . Superoxide radical (·O- 2) and hydroxyl (·OH) radicals were verified to be involved in the photocatalytic reaction by the active species capture experiment and the electron spin response (ESR) detection. The recycling experiments demonstrate the excellent stability and reusability of the In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 . In addition, in accordance with the experimental results, the highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism and degradation paths were proposed. This work provided a new way for preparation of Z-scheme core-shell composites which had broad applications prospect in environmental remediation.
