N-methylpyrrolidone-based electrolyte modulated CF bond weakening and Interface optimization synergistically enhances Li/CFx batteries energy density

Fei Zhou,Jiangmin Jiang,Gaoyu Zhou,Lingbang Qiu,Wenxuan Fu,Chencheng Xu,Yanhua Cui,Quanchao Zhuang

Lithium/fluorinated carbon (Li/CF x ) batteries have garnered substantial interest from researchers due to their superior energy density and low self-discharge characteristics. However, the strong covalent C F bond in the CF x cathode limits its discharge kinetics, affecting the actual power density and operating voltage. In this work, N -methylpyrrolidone (NMP) with high donor number has proposed as the main solvent of the electrolyte to facilitate the breaking of the C F bond through a bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S N 2) reaction. This strategy effectively reduces the energy barrier for Li + embedding and improves interfacial reaction potential. Notably, NMP forms a nitrogen-rich cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) membrane during the discharge process, which enhances interfacial ionic conductivity and stabilizes the electrode-electrolyte interface. The optimized electrolyte system achieves a discharge plateau of 2.7 V and an energy density of 2128 Wh kg −1 at 50 mA g −1 , significantly surpassing that of the conventional electrolyte (COE). This study provides a low-cost electrolyte optimization strategy, offering a promising approach to maintaining the high energy density and discharge voltage of Li/CF x batteries.

Construction of CF@ZIF-67 Reinforcements with a Polyphenol-Based Interlayer for Enhanced Interfacial Properties of PPESK Composites

Shan Cheng,Ning Wang,Qingfeng Sun,Jingyao Feng,Qingguang Bao,Zhenghui Liu,Xigao Jian,Nan Li

This study provides a novel strategy for improving the interfacial properties of advanced thermoplastic composites. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials exhibit significant potential in enhancing the interfacial properties of composite materials due to their special structure and extremely high specific surface area. However, existing introduction methods relying on pre-acidification treatments can impair the mechanical properties of carbon fibers (CFs) and lead to issues such as uneven growth of MOFs. This paper utilizes resveratrol (RES) in reaction with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and bisphenol S (BPS) to construct a polyphenol cross-linked coating on the surface of CFs. The coating provides excellent heterogeneous nucleation sites for ZIF-67 without the need for pre-acidification, successfully enabling the loading of MOF on the fiber surface. Compared to unmodified composites, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of CF@ZIF-67/ polyphthalazine ether sulfone ketone (PPESK) increased by 32.44% and 29.62%, respectively. The storage modulus reached 42 GPa, and the glass transition temperature rose to 298°C. Fracture morphology analysis further revealed that the failure mode shifted from interface debonding to resin cohesive failure, demonstrating a substantial enhancement in interfacial bonding.

Enhancing the interfacial and electromagnetic shielding properties of CF/EP composites via Fe-based MOFs in situ pyrolysis

Hao Pu,Weiqing He,Chun Yan,Yingdan Zhu,Lingyu Yue,Haibing Xu,Gang Chen,Xiaochen Yu

The interfacial bonding performance between carbon fibers and the resin matrix is a critical factor limiting the performance optimization of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. This work utilizes Fe 3+ as the iron source and fumaric acid as the organic ligand to construct the precursor of iron-based metal–organic framework (MIL-88-A) through in situ growth on carbon fiber surfaces. Subsequently, the grafting of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles onto carbon fiber surfaces was accomplished via a pyrolytic treatment. These modified carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites were then fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI). The results indicate that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle-modified CF/EP composites reached 106.4 MPa and 68.8 MPa, respectively, representing significant improvements of 63.7% and 48.9% compared to those of the desized carbon fiber composites. This enhancement can be attributed to the fact that the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles not only improved the wettability between the carbon fiber surface and the epoxy resin but also increased the surface roughness of the fibers, thereby enhancing mechanical interlocking and stress transfer efficiency in the interfacial region. Meanwhile, owing to the presence of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, the CF/EP composites exhibit outstanding electromagnetic shielding performance with an average shielding effectiveness of 47.1 dB in the X-band. This study offers new design insights for improving the interfacial properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites and expanding their multifunctional applications.

Amphiphilic terpolymer sizing enabling an interfacial toughening layer for enhanced interfacial and mechanical properties of CF/EP composites

Yusong Xiao,Lijuan Zhu,Juntao Li,Yi Li,Ce Liang

The surface of carbon fibres (CF) was modified by chemical oxidation to introduce carboxyl and hydroxyl functionalities. A polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) approach based on reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was adopted to prepare a functional amphiphilic terpolymer, poly (hexyl methacrylate-co-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate-co-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride) (PHAM), by adjusting the monomer feed composition. The resulting PHAM was subsequently used as a sizing agent for carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) composites. Leveraging the cooperative effects of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, the PHAM sizing layer constructs a stress-buffering interphase with enhanced toughness at the fibre/matrix interface. This hierarchical structure facilitates efficient load transfer through chemical bonding while promoting energy dissipation via the physical entanglement of flexible polymer chains, thereby improving the interfacial properties and the macroscopic mechanical performance of the composites. Contact-angle measurements of carbon fibres with different degrees of modification in polar and nonpolar liquids indicate that oxidation of CF, together with the introduction of the highly polar PHAM, enhances chemical compatibility within the interfacial region and consequently increases the overall surface energy of the CF. As a result, the flexural strength and impact strength of the CF/EP composites were improved by 26% and 44.5%, respectively .

Tailoring thermal transport pathways and ablation-resistant structures in Cf/HfC-SiC composites through processing-induced matrix evolution

Zhiyu Yang,Feiyan Cai,Dewei Ni,Bowen Chen,Hongda Wang,Yan Gu,Meng Liu,Yusheng Ding,Shaoming Dong

Ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites (UHTCMCs) are essential for thermal protection in extreme aerospace environments. The role of ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) matrix architecture in governing thermal transport and ablation resistance remains insufficiently understood. In this work, high-thermal-conductivity C f /HfC-SiC composites with distinct matrix structures were fabricated via slurry infiltration (SI) and precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP). The PIP route, enabled by molecular-scale precursor infiltration, yields a uniform HfC dispersion within the SiC matrix, establishing a continuous phonon transport network that delivers an axial thermal conductivity as high as 296 W/(m·K). In contrast, the SI route leads to localized HfC enrichment in inter-bundle pores, which, upon ablation, oxidizes into abundant HfO 2 particles that pin the SiO 2 melt, producing a dense and erosion-resistant oxide scale. Consequently, the SI-HfC composite exhibits a linear ablation rate of 0.042 μm/s and a mass ablation rate of 3.61 mg/s, with only a 9.31% degradation in axial thermal conductivity after 100 s ablation at 4.5 MW/m 2 , suffers less thermal conductivity degradation than the PIP-HfC (11.80%). This work elucidates the processing-microstructure-property correlations in UHTCMCs, providing a quantitative basis for route selection in high-thermal-conductivity thermal protection systems.

Fracture behavior and damage mechanisms of lightweight Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites in the thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling environment

Zhangwen Wang,Chao Wu,Anzhe Wang,Huaguan Li,Chenghai Xu,Guodong Fang

s Continuous carbon fiber-toughened ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics matrix composites (C f /ZrB 2 -SiC), which combine the high strength of carbon fiber needled preforms with the ultra-high-temperature ablation resistance of ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics, exhibit complex responses in the extreme thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling environments. The fracture behavior and damage mechanisms of the lightweight C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composites were investigated by the thermo-mechanical-oxygen coupling tensile tests. The residual strength after oxidation was found to be synergistically reduced by temperature and pre-tensile load, with a linear negative correlation between pre-tensile stress and residual strength. The needled fibers improve the interlaminar toughness but introduce the localized porosity that accelerates oxygen diffusion and oxidative damage. Under air oxidation at 1100°C, pre-tensile stress reopens self-healing microcracks, transforming the oxidation kinetics from diffusion-controlled to reaction-controlled regimes. This study can provide an experimental basis and practical guidance for the design of needled fiber preforms to balance oxidation resistance and mechanical properties.

Ppb-level fuel cell type NO2 sensor based on Nafion proton membrane and Au-Ni/CF sensitive electrode

Sitong Feng,Lingchu Huang,Qi Lu,Tong Wang,Rui Han,Xiaoyong Sun,Xishuang Liang,Fengmin Liu,Fangmeng Liu,Geyu Lu

The fuel cell type gas sensor has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of operating at room temperature, low power consumption and good stability. In this study, a new sensitive electrode material Au-Ni/CF was developed for the detection of NO 2 . Through XRD , SEM and TEM characterization, it has been demonstrated that the electrode material exhibits improved crystallinity after being sintered at high temperatures. This leads to a reduction in charge transfer impedance. Additionally, XPS testing and TEM characterization have confirmed that high temperature sintering results in the reduction of more metal elements, leading to an increase in the electrochemical surface area and effectively improving sensor sensitivity. Furthermore, adjusting the mass ratio of gold to nickel can alter the surface lattice arrangement and electronic structure of the electrode material, subsequently impacting its resistance and catalytic ability towards NO 2 , ultimately enhancing sensor sensitivity. The sensitivity of the sensor using Au 5 Ni 2 /CF as the electrode material for detecting 0.05–10 ppm NO 2 was found to be 47.88 nA/ppm with response and recovery times of 35 s and 25 s respectively when exposed to 2 ppm NO 2 . Furthermore, it exhibited good selectivity and stability, indicating promising potential for application in room temperature atmospheric environment monitoring.

Molecularly engineered high-solid-content waterborne polyurethane for interfacial tailoring and intrinsic UV resistance of CF/PA6 composites

Yantao Zhang,Yunhan Li,Hanlun Jin,Jiaoli Hu,Quanjing Guan,Xiaosong He,Jiaqi Zhou,Anqi Ju

A novel environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane (WPU) sizing agent was developed in this study for interfacial tailoring of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composites (CF/PA6 composites), with the aim of simultaneously enhancing their mechanical properties and UV resistance, thereby achieving structural-functional integration. The sizing agent was molecularly designed with multi-hydroxyl side groups and UV-resistant chain segments, and synthesized via a facile two-step organic route, endowing it with excellent interfacial reactivity and intrinsic UV resistance. Regulating the hydrophilic group content enabled the preparation of WPU sizing agent with a high solid content of 56%, which exhibited high coating efficiency, environmental benignity, yellowing resistance, and storage stability, indicating considerable potential for industrial-scale production. Relative to unsized CF/PA6 composites, the flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of WPU sized CF/PA6 composite were enhanced by 61.5%, 57.0%, and 71.2%, reaching 715 MPa, 62.8 MPa, and 74 MPa, respectively, and the retention rate of mechanical properties after UV irradiation was as high as 98%. Furthermore, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed microscopic interlocking between WPU and PA6, leading to an increased interfacial coupling thickness. This study offers new insights into the development of high-performance thermoplastic resin-based composites and the microscopic understanding of their interfacial tailoring mechanisms.

The direct architecture of carbon fiber-carbon nanofiber hierarchical reinforcements for superior interfacial properties of CF/epoxy composites

Hao Zheng,Quanjiang Li,Chaoyong Yu,Xue Zhu,Pinting Guo,Yuanyuan Mu,Lichun Ma

A simple and efficient chemical method was developed to graft directly carbon nanofibers (CNFs) onto carbon fiber (CF) surface to construct a CF-CNF hierarchical reinforcing structure. The grafted CF reinforcements via covalent ester linkage at low temperature without any usage of dendrimer or catalyst was investigated by FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic contact angle analysis, and single fiber tensile testing. The results indicated that the CNFs with high density could effectively increase the polarity, wettability, and roughness of the CF surface. Simultaneous enhancements of the interfacial shear strength, flexural strength, and dynamic mechanical properties as well as the tensile strength of CFs were achieved, for an increase of 75.8%, 21.9%, 21.7%, and 0.5%, respectively. We believe the facile and effective method may provide a novel and promising interface design strategy for next-generation advanced composite structures.

A novel synergistic approach to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of CF/PEEK-Ti laminates through GNPs

Meng Cao,Yewei Zhang,Mingyu Liu,Xuefeng Sun,Shuo Wang,Jian Zang

The insufficient bond strength at the fiber/metal interface of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is a primary obstacle to their widespread application. To address this issue, a strategy is proposed to introduce graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) to enhance the bond strength at the carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK)-titanium interface. This approach comprises two main components. First, GNPs were deposited onto the surface of the titanium layer to form a micro-nanolayer using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effects of varying voltages, deposition times, and GNPs concentrations on the EPD results were investigated. Second, the PEEK matrix was modified with GNPs to further enhance the interfacial bond strength of CF/PEEK-titanium. The results indicated that optimal EPD parameters-30 V, 90 s, and a GNP concentration of 0.75 mg/mL-yielded the best outcomes. Under these conditions, the flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength of FMLs improved by 201.9 %, 133.9 %, and 91.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. When combining GNPs-modified PEEK with EPD, these properties increased further, with flexural strength, interfacial shear strength, and shear adhesion strength enhanced by 281.7 %, 238.7 %, and 112.4 %, respectively, compared to unmodified FMLs. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to further investigate the role and mechanism of GNPs in the GNPs/PEEK/titanium ternary system. The simulations revealed that combining a GNPs-modified matrix with EPD significantly enhances the system's interfacial energy. Moreover, GNPs substantially influence the torsional behaviour of the PEEK main chain. These combined experimental and simulation results offer new insights into applying GNPs in composite materials.

Influence of sanding and plasma treatment on shear bond strength of 3D-printed PEI, PEEK and PEEK/CF

Weijie Li,Lin Sang,Xigao Jian,Jinyan Wang

Increasing interest in 3D-printed high-performance polymers is observed due to their excellent mechanical properties and high resistance to chemical and thermal degradation. One of the ongoing challenges is to achieve sufficient joint strength because of the inertness of thermoplastics . In the current work, effects of surface treatment on shear bond strength of 3D-printed samples were focused and assessed. First, polyetherimide (PEI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and PEEK/CF(carbon fiber) as adherend were produced via FDM 3D printing . Then, sanding or atmospheric plasma treatments were carried out to improve the surface wettability of the 3D-printed specimens. Significantly, reduction in surface roughness was observed in sanding treated specimens, while nearly no change occurred in plasma-treated counterparts. However, surface free energy and wettability were greatly improved after plasma treatment. Single lap-shear tests and failure mode for PEI, PEEK and PEEK/CF using two different adhesives (film and liquid) were investigated, and the effect of surface treatment on bond strength was further compared. Results suggested that liquid adhesive contributed higher joint strength for surface-treated specimens in comparison to film adhesive . Besides, atmospheric plasma treatment is more efficient and safer method for 3D-printed PEEK and PEEK/CF, achieving a higher joining strength.

Biotemplated Fabrication of 3D Hierarchically Porous MgAl-LDH/CF Composites with Effective Adsorption of Organic Dyes from Wastewater

Qinglei Sun,Bo Chen

The serious pollution of water resources has brought great challenges to human existence; it is urgent to develop adsorbents for removing toxic dyes from wastewater. In this work, we synthesized hierarchically porous MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH)/carbon fiber (CF) composites with excellent adsorption of Congo red (CR) by combining the biotemplating and hydrothermal method. The effects of various Mg/Al molar ratios on the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy characterizations and the dye adsorption capacity of composites were investigated. Three-dimensionally stackable MgAl-LDH nanosheets with a Mg/Al molar ratio of 4 were attached uniformly on the surface of hollow carbon fibers calcined from cotton, generating higher crystallization and specific area. The maximum adsorption capacity of Mg4Al-LDH/CF was equal to 271.00 mg g–1 (linear Langmuir model, at 200 mg g–1 CR in 72 h), which was significantly higher than the adsorption capacity of MgAl-LDH synthesized without the use of a biotemplate (linear Langmuir model, 170.35 mg g–1 at 200 mg g–1 CR in 72 h). The adsorption reaction followed the linear pseudo-second-order kinetics as well as the linear Langmuir model. Anion exchange and electrostatic attraction were considered as the main adsorption mechanisms. Mg4Al-LDH/CF still maintained 85.33% of the maximum adsorption capacity after four adsorption–desorption cycles. The adsorbent synthesized by flexible and simple methods might be a competitive candidate to purify nondegradable substances from wastewater.
