The development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries necessitates the creation of efficient cathode materials . By simultaneous phosphating and sulfurating, a spindle-shaped CoP-Co 3 S 4 heterostructure sulfur cathode substrate made up of numerous tiny needle-like structures is created. The benefits of CoP with outstanding conductivity and Co 3 S 4 with great adsorption capacity are combined in the as-prepared CoP-Co 3 S 4 heterostructures, which achieve efficient capture-diffusion-transformation of polysulfides at the interface. The CoP accelerates the redox kinetics toward polysulfide conversion, and the Co 3 S 4 has a considerable adsorption power toward polysulfides. The quick nucleation of polysulfide and increased capture effectiveness are aided by the quick transfer of polysulfide from the Co 3 S 4 surface to the CoP surface. As a result, the CoP-Co 3 S 4 @S cathode battery with a 1.1 mg cm −2 sulfur load achieves a high initial capacity of 1516.9 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and maintains that capacity after 100 cycles at 750.1 mAh g −1 . After 300 cycles, even the 565.1 mAh g −1 specific capacity can be attained at 1 C.

The development and improvement of new transition metal-based catalysts to replace Pt/C electrodes in electrolytic water hydrogen evolution has attracted much attention. In this work, we used ammonium citrate as additive, mixed with cobalt nitrate, through hydrothermal and phosphating methods to get supported on carbon cloth catalyst with new morphology (referred to as E380-CoP/CC, E380 stands for ammonium citrate). Benefit from the dense and fine nanosheet structure, compared with cobalt phosphating alone, the catalyst E380-CoP/CC has a significant improvement in hydrogen evolution performance. In 1 M KOH, the overpotential is 57 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is only 40 mV dec -1 , which is very close to the hydrogen evolution performance of Pt/C electrode. In addition, the catalyst has favorable stability and superior hydrogen evolution performance after undergoing CV 2000 cycles and 48 h i- t test. This work offers a reliable idea for realizing electrolytic water hydrogen evolution technology with high efficiency and energy saving.

Exploring highly active catalysts with low-price materials is urgently needed for water-splitting electrolysis. Herein, selenium-doped CoP nanoneedles construct the grass-like structure, and the nanoneedles are vertically anchored on carbon cloth (Se–CoP/CC). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy reveal the nanoneedle array architecture of S–CoP, which is convenient for the adsorption of molecules on active centers. The small diameter of nanoneedles is beneficial for rapid charge transfer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the electronic structure regulation of Se incorporation, which is beneficial for the optimized catalysis activity. Electrochemical tests show that Se dopants result in more catalysis sites and faster kinetics. Endowed with these advantages, good catalytic performance of the prepared sample for hydrogen evolution is disclosed, with low overpotentials of 47 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and 145 mV at 100 mA cm–2 in alkaline solution. This work highlights a promising way to improve the performance of transition-metal-based catalysts with non-metal-doping engineering toward water electrolysis application.

Electron spin polarization plays a vital role on photocatalysis but rarely considered. Herein, a double-layer hollow yolk-shell Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure photocatalyst is prepared via two ion exchanges approach using Co-MOF as a template. It shows ferromagnetic characteristics and obvious photothermal effect due to the special structure. Interestingly, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is enhanced about twice under external magnetic field compared to field-free. The improvement can be ascribed to the enhanced electron spin polarization of the vacancy defects for Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions promoting efficient photogenerated charge separation and prolonging the lifetimes obviously. The special double-layer hollow yolk-shell superstructure is another reason for the optimized photocatalytic performance, which could expose adequate surface active sites for photocatalytic reaction. Moreover, the high stability of this defective Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure indicates the potential applications in field of photocatalysis. This strategy may provide new insights for fabricating high-efficient superstructure photocatalysts with electron spin polarization.

One of the major challenges in developing direct hydrazine fuel cells (DHzFCs) is the creation of highly efficient, robust, and inexpensive electrocatalysts with a superaerophobic property for the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR). Herein, a cobalt phosphide nanowire array (CoP-NWA@CP) is grown on a carbon paper substrate as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the HzOR in alkaline medium, which features a superaerophobic surface that is highly antigaseous and conducive to nitrogen evolution (a gaseous byproduct of the HzOR). The catalyst demonstrates a significant HzOR performance with an onset potential of −61 mV (vs RHE), an ultralow overpotential of −32 mV@10 mA cm–2, and superior stability with little current density loss over 10,000 s at an overpotential of 0.42 V (vs RHE). The remarkable HzOR performance of the CoP-NWA@CP catalyst is attributed not only to its high intrinsic activity but also to its nanowire array design, which offers a large specific surface area and rapid electron and mass transfer, as well as its superaerophobic surface wettability to expedite the release of N2 from the catalyst surface. Furthermore, a DHzFC is constructed using the CoP-NWA@CP catalyst as the anode and commercial MnO2 as the cathode, which delivers a high open-circuit voltage of 0.905 V, a remarkable power density of 300 mW cm–2, and 95% retention after 12.5 h operation, suggesting great potential of CoP-NWA@CP in practical applications.

The exploration of high-efficiency non-noble metal catalysts for improving the intrinsic activity and active sites for overall water splitting persists as a bottleneck issue. Herein, a facile heterogeneous molten salt strategy has been proposed to fabricate CoP/Co nanosheets array that is vertically attached to a carbon matrix. Such a hierarchical structure endows the hybrid with abundant active sites and favorable reaction kinetics. Experimental results reveal that the molten salt determines the final shape of metallic Co, which is not sensitive to the organic sources. After optimization of the molten salt mass, the CoP/Co/C-6 shows the best bifunctional performance, requiring an overpotential of 132 mV and 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. Theoretical simulation results manifest the CoP/Co heterostructure alters the electronic structure of Co and CoP , and reduces the adsorption free energy of intermediates, thus further boosting the electrocatalysis activity. This work proposes a molten salt-assisted method for the rational design of novel two-dimensional nano-hybrids for energy conversion applications.

As the star material among nonprecious electrocatalysts, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has received much attention. However, the catalytic inertness of the basal plane, low conductivity of its steady state (2H phase), and the agglomeration of lamellar structures have seriously hindered its catalytic performance. It is very essential to design and modulate the morphology and phase of MoS 2 to improve the above issues by synergistic regulation of electrical structure and defect engineering. Herein, MoS 2 was delicately composited on CoP nanoframe derived from a typical metal–organic frame nanostructure (ZIF-67), forming the hollow CoP@MoS 2 hetero-nanoframe. This exquisite externally layered and internally hollow CoP@MoS 2 electrocatalyst demonstrated excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction, with a low overpotential of 119 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 49 mV dec −1 , a large electric double-layer capacitance of 10.28 mF cm −2 , and prominent long-term stability. The remarkable catalytic performance of hollow CoP@MoS 2 hetero-nanoframe can be attributed to the unique architecture of the hetero-nanostructures, appropriate component ratios, strong interaction between CoP and MoS 2 , and large-scale defects and disorder. First-principles density-functional theory calculations can prove the above arguments adequately, the hydrogen adsorption free energy of CoP@MoS 2 is close to zero.

The development of cost-effective catalysts with high activity and stability over a wide pH range is urgent, but there are great challenges in the selection and design of catalyst materials. In this work, cobalt phosphide nanoparticles were modified onto tungsten carbide nanowire arrays (CoP@WC/CC) on carbon cloth substrate by a two-step method. The construction of CoP@WC heterostructure results in the downward shift of the d-band center, which optimizes the adsorption energy of catalyst and reaction intermediates. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of CoP and WC contributes to the alkaline HER kinetic process. In addition, binder-free self-supporting nanoarray have excellent electrical conductivity, large specific surface area and strong structure, which is conducive to charge/matter exchange and catalyst stability. The results show that CoP@WC/CC can effectively drive HER over a wide pH range and exhibit better catalytic performance than the single component control sample. In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH, CoP@WC/CC can drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with only 52 and 70 mV, while showing excellent stability without obvious performance degradation during 100 h of constant current test. A proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) using CoP@WC/CC catalyst operates stably for 200,000 s at 30 mA cm −2 . This study provides a new reference for the design and development of high efficiency, low cost and wide pH-universal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts.

Developing efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a broad pH range has received considerable attention. In this work, we prepared multi-dimensional MoS 2 /S-CoP heterojunction catalysts by utilizing the carbon clothes supported ZIF-67 array as templates combining with Mo-ion exchange and high-temperature phosphorization-sulfidation strategy. The introduction of MoS 2 into S-CoP results in electron redistribution and the formation of a distinctive space charge region at the two-phase contact interface, thereby effectively tuning surface properties, enhancing electron conductivity, and improving electrocatalytic activity. According to Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the introduction of MoS 2 is advantageous for the adsorption and desorption of H*, resulting in the value of ΔG H* very close to zero. Furthermore, the adsorbed water molecules are more readily activated, rendering the ΔG H2O-dis decrease, thus significantly promoting HER activity. These features contribute to robust HER electrocatalytic performance in a wide pH range and even in seawater, which is also beneficial for industrial applications. In particular, MoS 2 /S-CoP exhibits superior HER performance in alkaline seawater, requiring only 197 and 228 mV to reach the current densities of 100 and 200 mA cm -2 , respectively. This study offers novel perspectives on high-performance heterostructures for HER electrocatalysts in alkaline seawater environments.

Abstract The aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived fatty acids offers an alternative route for the production of diesel-range hydrocarbons, but remains a major challenge. Herein, we report a hydrophobic CoP catalyst anchored on P–N co-doped carbon spheres (CoP@PNC-900), which exhibits high performance for the aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid at 270 °C and 2 MPa H2, delivering nearly complete conversion together with over 99% yield of C15+C16 alkanes. The enhanced performance arises from the synergy between CoP active sites and the hydrophobic interface, which promotes C–O bond cleavage while enhancing the contact between hydrophobic substrates and catalytic sites. Isotopic-labeling experiments demonstrate that water acts exclusively as the reaction medium rather than a hydrogen source. In situ FT-IR–MS analysis combined with DFT calculations confirms the hydrodeoxygenation- and decarbonylation-related pathways, with C–O bond cleavage of the alcohol intermediate identified as the rate-determining step in the hydrodeoxygenation pathway. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits a broad substrate scope for various fatty acids and esters as well as stable recyclability under hydrothermal conditions. Finally, a preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA) highlights the potential environmental benefits of the aqueous-phase catalytic process. This work establishes an effective strategy that integrates active-site engineering with interfacial hydrophobic microenvironment regulation for the aqueous-phase valorization of biomass-derived fatty acids.

PTA-assisted precursor co-evolution couples hollowing with W incorporation. • Hollow CoWO 4 /CoP integrates porosity with strongly coupled heterointerfaces. • CoWO 4 /CoP enables efficient and durable alkaline overall water splitting. Integrating hollow-structure engineering with multicomponent regulation remains challenging for metal–organic framework-derived bifunctional electrocatalysts. Herein, a phosphotungstic acid (PTA)-assisted precursor coevolution strategy is developed to construct hollow CoWO 4 /CoP heterostructures for alkaline overall water splitting. Serving as both an acidic etchant and a W source, PTA couples framework etching and reconstruction with W incorporation into the ZIF-67-derived precursor, thereby coordinating the structural and compositional evolution of the precursor. Subsequent calcination and phosphidation transform the precursor into a porous hollow framework composed of closely integrated CoWO 4 and CoP domains. The hollow architecture increases the accessible electrode–electrolyte interface and facilitates mass transport, while electronic interactions between the oxide and phosphide components promote interfacial charge transfer. Consequently, CoWO 4 /CoP requires overpotentials of only 73 and 218 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 for HER and OER, respectively, and sustains OER operation at 1 A cm −2 for 500 h. When CoWO 4 /CoP is employed as both the anode and cathode, the resulting electrolyzer reaches 10 mA cm⁻² at a cell voltage of 1.52 V and operates continuously for 200 h. This work demonstrates an effective route for coordinating hollow-structure formation and composition regulation in MOF-derived multicomponent electrocatalysts.

Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A was constructed by ALD and electrochemical activation. • CoP acts as the key activation component, inducing Co-O-Mo cleavage and Co spin polarization. • Fe 2 O 3 loading triggers interfacial charge redistribution to further optimize Δ G H⁎ adsorption for HER. • Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A requires only 23 mV for HER and 180 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits robust stability after 1000 h. Cobalt-based oxide catalysts are promising for alkaline water electrolysis owing to their natural abundance and structural stability, yet their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity remains limited. Herein, a Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@cobalt molybdate hydrate/nickel foam (Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF) catalyst was constructed through hydrothermal synthesis, vapor-phase phosphorization and atomic layer deposition (ALD), followed by in situ electrochemical activation to regulate the spin state of Co sites, yielding Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A. Fe 2 O 3 @CoP@CMOH/NF-A catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance in 1.0 M KOH, requiring an overpotential of only 23 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and maintaining stability for over 1000 h. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that CoP/CMOH interfacial interaction induces Co-O-Mo bond cleavage under an applied reductive potential, decreases the coordination number of Co sites, increases the population of unpaired electrons, and promotes Co 3d electron rearrangement, thereby enhancing Co-site spin polarization and optimizing hydrogen adsorption. Fe 2 O 3 further strengthens interfacial charge redistribution, increasing the effective magnetic moment from 1.98 μ B to 4.09 μ B and optimizing Δ G H⁎ from −0.98 to −0.46 eV. The catalyst also delivers excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with an overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and long stability for over 1000 h. As a bifunctional catalyst, it reaches 10 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.44 V for overall water splitting and maintains a low HER overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for 1000 h in simulated seawater.
