A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method for synthesizing size-tunable CdTe/Cd(OH)2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and excellent stability

Beibei Wang,Huan Shang,Cuiping Nie,Qi Wang,Meihu Ma,Zhaoxia Cai

A novel two-step controlled basic water phase method has been developed for synthesizing size-tunable and water-soluble CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots with high quantum yield and good stability. The size of the prepared CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots can be easily manipulated by varying the concentrations of NaOH solution step by step. The maximal emission wavelengths of the series CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell QDs were from 513   nm to 610   nm (emission colors tuned from green to red). The CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots not only possess high quantum yield (up to 83%) but also exhibit excellent photostability (being stable after being stored for more than 2 months). The CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots were characterized by transmission electron microscopy , high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction spectrometry , ultraviolet–visible spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry. The water-soluble nature of the CdTe/Cd(OH) 2 core/shell quantum dots offers great potentiality for their chemical and biological applications. This method is easily controlled, low-cost and reproducible. So it is possible to extend this approach to the preparation of other size-tunable inorganic metal hydroxide capped core/shell quantum dots.

Electrochemiluminescent properties of CdTe quantum dots in different potential ranges and their application to the ultra-sensitive detection of phenylephrine hydrochloride and paliperidone

Shuangshuang Tian,Liqiang Chen,Hong Zhang,Liangquan Sheng,Xinxin Wang,Deqian Huang

CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) were synthesized using mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as a stabilizer. The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) mechanism of CdTe QDs was examined at cathodic (−2.1 to 0 V) and anodic (0–1.5 V) potentials. Utilizing dissolved oxygen as a co-reactant for cathodic CdTe QDs, the addition of phenylephrine hydrochloride (PEH) triggers a burst effect on the intermediate OH at the electrode surface, resulting in a reduction of electron hole formation. Consequently, a novel method for detecting PEH in the concentration range of 0.2–10 μM has been developed. A strong linear correlation was observed between Lg C PEH and the ECL intensity ratio ( I/I 0 ) of cathodic CdTe QDs, with a detection limit of 37 nM. Tri- n -propylamine (TPrA) was utilized as a co-reactant for the anode of CdTe QDs. The addition of paliperidone (PP) occupies the oxidized vacancies of TPrA, leading to a diminished ECL signal. A new method was subsequently established to detect PP in the concentration range of 0.2 nM–1.0 μM with a detection limit of 18 pM. This method has been successfully applied to detect PEH in urine and in compound tropicamide eye drops, as well as to quantify PP content in paliperidone sustained-release tablets and serum, demonstrating excellent recovery and selectivity.

Photoelectrochemical and fluorescent dual-mode sensitive detection of circulating tumor cells based on aptamer DNA-linked CdTe QDs/Bi2MoO6/CdS “double Z-scheme” system

Shihao Duan,Haipeng Zhang,Zhaopeng Liu,Jian Li,Liming Gao,Hong Jiang,Jidong Wang

Herein, a novel dual-mode biosensor integrating photoelectrochemical (PEC) and fluorescence (FL) sensing detection was developed for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) based on aptamer DNA-linked CdTe QDs (Apt-CdTe QDs)/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CdS “dual Z-scheme” sensing system. Apt-CdTe QDs were assembled on FTO/CdS/Bi 2 MoO 6 /cDNA electrode through hybridization with cDNA, resulting in the formation of a double Z-scheme CdS/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CdTe heterostructure that significantly enhanced the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. Upon the presence of MCF-7 cells, Apt-QDs were captured and subsequently released from the captured electrode, leading to a decrease in photocurrent and an increase in fluorescence intensity, thus enabling effective PEC-FL dual-mode detection. The detection of CTCs exhibited a linear relationship within the concentration range from 50 to 100000 cells mL −1 with limit of detection of 1 cell mL −1 in both PEC and FL modes. This approach effectively corrected systematic errors, improved detection accuracy and sensitivity, and held great potential in the clinical detection of CTCs.

PEGylation of protein-imprinted nanocomposites sandwiching CdTe quantum dots with enhanced fluorescence sensing selectivity

Xiao Han,Wenyan Han,Shiting Zhang,Zhiqiang Liu,Guoqi Fu

Fluorescent sensors combining the selective recognition of protein molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the fluorescent sensing of quantum dots (QDs) have been studied considerably, but their fluorescence sensing selectivity for the target proteins remains to be increased. Herein, we propose a strategy for increasing the sensing selectivity by post-imprinting PEGylation of surface protein-imprinted nanocomposites with embedded QDs. With bovine hemoglobin (BHb) as a model protein template, protein MIP nanolayers were anchored over the CdTe QD decorated SiO2 nanoparticles by the sol–gel process using aminopropyltriethoxy silane and tetraethoxysilicane. PEG chains were then grafted onto the surface of the imprinted nanostructures via the nucleophilic reaction of the surface amine groups with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester-terminal methoxy-PEG, followed by template removal. The resultant PEGylated sensors showed significantly improved aqueous dispersion stability compared with the non-PEGylated controls. More importantly, such PEGylation greatly increased the fluorescence response selectivity, with the Stern–Volmer equation based imprinting factor increasing from 2.7 to 5.4. The PEGylated sensors were applied to determine BHb in bovine serum samples with satisfactory recoveries at three spiking levels ranging from 94.3 to 103.7%, indicating their potential application in real samples.

Photoelectrochemical CaMV35S biosensor for discriminating transgenic from non-transgenic soybean based on SiO2@CdTe quantum dots core-shell nanoparticles as signal indicators

Yaqi Li,Li Sun,Qian Liu,En Han,Nan Hao,Liuping Zhang,Shanshan Wang,Jianrong Cai,Kun Wang

A methodology for detection of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus 35S(CaMV35S) promoter was developed to distinguish transgenic from non-transgenic soybean samples by using photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor. In this PEC biosensing system, the as-prepared gold nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide acted as a nanocarrier to immobilize the thiol-functional probe (probe1), and the SiO 2 @CdTe quantum dots (QDs) core-shell nanoparticles tagged with the amino-functional probe (probe2) acted as signal indicators, respectively. In the presence of target DNA (tDNA) of CaMV35S, the binding of tDNA with probe1 and probe2 through the high specific DNA hybridization led to the fabrication of sandwich structure, and thus the high loading of the signal indicators SiO 2 @CdTe QDs at the electrode surface, which increased the PEC signal. The increased PEC signal depended on the concentration of tDNA, and a wide linear range from 0.1   pM to 0.5   nM with low detection limit of 0.05   pM was obtained. In addition, the PEC biosensor has been successfully used for discriminating transgenic soybean from non-transgenic samples, which was consistent with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results, suggesting the proposed PEC biosensor is a feasible tool for the further daily genetically modified organism detection.

Facile polymerizable surfactant inspired synthesis of fluorescent molecularly imprinted composite sensor via aqueous CdTe quantum dots for highly selective detection of λ-cyhalothrin

Xiao Wei,Tongfan Hao,Yeqing Xu,Kai Lu,Hongji Li,Yongsheng Yan,Zhiping Zhou

In this paper, we develop a method by using octadecyl-4-vinylbenzyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (OVDAC) as a surfactant to transfer aqueous CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with excellent fluorescent property to organic solvent, after a surface imprinting-directing polymerization process, a high-performance aqueous QDs-polymer fluorescent imprinted composite sensor was obtained and used for highly selective recognition of λ-cyhalothrin (LC). Here, OVDAC was first used in the fabrication of fluorescent imprinted composite sensors, and the OVDAC-modified CdTe QDs were used as the solid supports and auxiliary monomers. Through this novel strategy, strong fluorescence of aqueous QDs was inherited in the resultant MIPs . After the experimental conditions were optimized, a linear relationship was obtained covering the linear range of 0.1–16   μmol   L −1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9989 and a high imprinting factor about 5.99. In addition, the MIPs-OVDAC/CdTe QDs had higher molecular selectivity and sensing specificity than two kinds of molecularly imprinted silica coated QDs which were prepared by the Stöber method and reverse microemulsion method, respectively. The developed method was applicable to routine trace determination of LC in real examples. This study provides a general strategy to fabricate high-performance fluorescent sensors based on QDs which were originally water-soluble for highly selective detection of environmental pollutants.

Organic–inorganic nanohybrids based on an AIE luminogen-functional polymer and CdTe/ZnS QDs: morphologies, optical properties, and applications

Bingfeng Shi,Jianhua Lü,Ying Liu,Yang Xiao,Changli Lü

Nano-light materials have attracted great interest in materials research due to their excellent fluorescent properties. The hybrid assembly of various nano-optical materials combines their advantages, extending the scope of potential applications. Herein, we report a fluorescence organic–inorganic hybrid nanostructure (T-PNI@QDs) based on binding red-emitting CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) to blue-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active polymeric micelles in aqueous media with dual-channel emission. The AIE-active polymeric micelles were obtained by the self-assembly of thiol-terminated tetraphenylethylene (TPE) functionalized poly(N-isopropylmethacylamide) (T-PNI-SH) in water. An interesting assembly behaviour of transformation from a worm-like to a core–shell structure was observed by controlling the ratio of QDs/polymers due to the coordinated interaction between the QDs and the thiol groups. The dual-emission of T-PNI@QDs has obvious temperature-sensitive behaviour on account of PNIPAM. The novel fluorescent hybrid nanostructure was used as a probe to selectively detect picric acid (PA) in pure water. We expect this work will open up a new perspective for the construction of organic–inorganic hybrids based on different nano-light materials.

Highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor for MUC1 detection based on a DNA functionalized CdTe quantum dots as signal enhancers

Bao-Kang Jin,Jiajia Wang,Chun Kan

In this paper, a proportional electrochemical biosensor based on cadmium telluride/ polypyrrole (CdTe/PPy) nanocomposite is developed for the detection of MUC1 with high selectivity and sensitivity. The result indicates that CdTe/PPy nanocomposite is modified on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which supplies a large surface area for immobilizing cap-DNA, ensuring its high selectivity and sensitivity. Whereafter, CdTe linked sig-DNA (MUC1 aptamer) is introduced, allowing MUC1 aptamer to hybridize with cap- DNA. CdTe as signal amplification elements in order to generate the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal. Conceivably, the target MUC1 detection was based upon the current signal change due to the quantities change of the signal amplification elements CdTe. In the presence of MUC1, the MUC1 aptamer specifically binds to MUC1, resulting in the release of CdTe-sig-DNA from the electrode surface and the decrease of peak current. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the electrochemical biosensor present a highly selective, sensitive, stability and reproducibility for the MUC1 from the range of 0.1 nM to 100 nM with detection limit of 0.05 nM (S/N = 3). Therefore, the electrochemical biosensor has a potential application in medical disease diagnosis application detection.

Xylenol orange-modified CdTe quantum dots as a fluorescent/colorimetric dual-modal probe for anthrax biomarker based on competitive coordination

Yatian Cao,Xiaolong Gong,Le Li,Huihui Li,Xuanming Zhang,Dong-Yu Guo,Fuxiang Wang,Qinhe Pan

Bacillus anthracis spores can make humans infected with vicious anthrax, so it is significant to detect their biomarker 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA). The development of dual-modal methods for DPA detection that are more flexible in practical applications remains a challenge. Herein, colorimetric xylenol orange (XO) was modified on fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (QDs) for dual-modal detection of DPA through competitive coordination. After the binding of XO on CdTe QDs via coordination with Cd 2+ , CdTe QDs displayed quenched red fluorescence and the bound XO was presented as red color. The competitive coordination of DPA with Cd 2+ made XO released from CdTe QDs, causing the enhanced red fluorescence of CdTe QDs and the yellow color of free XO. On this basis, DPA was rapidly (1 min) quantified through fluorescent and colorimetric modes within the ranges of 0.1–5 μM and 0.5–40 μM, respectively. The detection limits for DPA were calculated as low as 42 nM and 240 nM, respectively assigned to fluorescent and colorimetric modes. The level of urinary DPA was further measured. Satisfactory relative standard deviations (fluorescent mode: 0.1%–10.2%, colorimetric mode: 0.8%–1.8%) and spiked recoveries (fluorescent mode: 100.0%–115.0%, colorimetric mode: 86.0%–96.6%) were obtained.

Finely-Tuning Chemiluminescent Color of CdTe Nanocrystals and Its Application for Near-Infrared Semi-Automatic Immunoassay

Xiaoxuan Ren,Zhijian Tian,Xuwen Gao,Yaojia Ai,Mengwei Li,Bin Zhang,Guizheng Zou

Chemiluminescence (CL), especially commercialized CL immunoassay (CLIA), is normally performed within the eye-visible region of the spectrum by exploiting the electronic-transition-related emission of the molecule luminophore. Herein, dual-stabilizers-capped CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is employed as a model of nanoparticulated luminophore to finely tune the CL color with superior color purity. Initialized by oxidizing the CdTe NCs with potassium periodate (KIO4), intermediates of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) tend to charge CdTe NCs in both series-connection and parallel-connection routes and dominate the charge-transfer CL of CdTe NCs. The CdTe NCs/KIO4 system can exhibit color-tunable CL with the maximum emission wavelength shifted from 694 nm to 801 nm, and the red-shift span is over 100 nm. Both PL and CL of each of the CdTe NCs are bandgap-engineered; the change in the NCs surface state via CL reaction enables CL of each of the CdTe NCs to be red-shifted for ∼20 nm to PL, while the change in the NCs surface state via labeling CdTe NCs to secondary-antibody (Ab2) enables CL of the CdTe NCs-Ab2 conjugates to be red-shifted for another ∼20 nm to bare CdTe NCs. The CL of CdTe753-Ab2/KIO4 is ∼791 nm, which can perform near-infrared CL immunoassay and semi-automatically determined procalcitonin (PCT) on commercialized in vitro diagnosis (IVD) instruments.

Rapid determination of malachite green in water and fish using a fluorescent probe based on CdTe quantum dots coated with molecularly imprinted polymer

Le Wu,Zheng-zhong Lin,Hui-ping Zhong,Xiao-mei Chen,Zhi-yong Huang

A fluorescent probe based on CdTe quantum dots (QDs) coated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was fabricated for the determination of malachite green (MG) by the strategy of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The MIP-coated QDs were synthesized through precipitation polymerization using acrylamide and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The optimum molar ratio of MG, monomer and cross-linker was 1:8:40 in 60   mL of acetonitrile, and the polymerization time was 28   h. The MIP-coated QDs, with an average diameter around 290   nm, showed excellent fluorescence emission in 500–700   nm at λ ex 370   nm. The probe exhibited fluorescence quenching response to MG selectively within only 5   min at the concentrations from 0.1 to 20   μmol   L −1 . The fluorescent probe was successfully used to detect MG in water and fish samples with a detection limit of 0.059   μmol   L −1 (3 σ , n   =   9). The spiked recoveries, from 94.8% to 98.1% for water samples, and 98.1% to 106.2% for fish samples, respectively, indicated that the as-prepared MIP-coated QDs could be used as a fluorescent probe to detect MG rapidly in water and fish samples.

A novel microfluidic origami photoelectrochemical sensor based on CdTe quantum dots modified molecularly imprinted polymer and its highly selective detection of S-fenvalerate

Yanhu Wang,Dejin Zang,Shenguang Ge,Lei Ge,Jinghua Yu,Mei Yan

Driven by the urgent demand of high-selectively point-of-care testing device for pesticide, molecular imprinting-photoelectrochemistry (MI-PEC) was introduced into microfluidic paper-based analytical strategy to design a novel paper-based photoelectrochemical (paper-based PEC) protocol. The MI-PEC strategy was constructed based on CdTe quantum dots dotted molecular imprinted polymers (CdTe QDs@MIPs), and triggered by a common ultraviolet lamp (∼365   nm, 50$). The paper-based PEC sensor was fabricated by immobilizing CdTe QDs@MIPs on paper-based screen-printed working electrodes (WEs) via gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), which was electrodeposited on the surface of WE to improve the electron transfer efficiency for high sensitivity. Using S-fenvalerate as model analyte, the produced photocurrent from the proposed paper-based MI-PEC sensor upon ultraviolet radiation decreased with the increasing concentrations of S-fenvalerate solution, and the quenched paper-based MI-PEC showed a low detection limit of 3.2   ×   10 −9   mol   L −1 . This study has made a successful attempt in the development of highly selective and sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor for S-fenvalerate monitoring.
