A TiO2 protective layer can significantly improve the stability of a Si-based photoelectrode. However, employment of a high-vacuum technique in fabricating a high-performance TiO2 protective layer is difficult for a normal laboratory. To solve this problem, in the present work, a composite protective layer of TiO2 and MOF (metal–organic framework) derivatives based on a sol–gel technology is specially designed. Meanwhile, the micropyramid structure has been formed on the Si surface to increase the absorption of incident light, and the catalyst CoP was modified on the surface of the protective layer to improve catalytic activity. Composition of the MOF derivatives could increase band bending of the Si-based photocathode and then enhance the intensity of the built-in electric field, resulting in more photogenerated electrons to migrate to the electrode surface. The TiO2 composite protective layer obtained by the sol–gel method is comparable to the one based on the high vacuum technology. The as-prepared photocathode exhibited excellent PEC hydrogen production performance, including an onset potential of 0.409 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high photocurrent density of −23.04 mA cm−2 at 0 V vs. RHE under simulated AM 1.5G illumination. Moreover, the obtained photocathode displayed exceptional durability over a period of 144 h.

The feasibility of combining novel halogenated hydrocarbon-based working pairs with low-pressure compression-assisted absorption refrigeration system (LCARS) was proved for the first time from the experimental perspective. An experimental prototype of the absorption-compression hybrid refrigeration system with a 1 kW cooling capacity was designed and tested to explore actual performances of selected R134a-DMETEG and performance improvements from compression in LCARS. At an evaporation temperature of approximately 5 °C, as the hot water inlet temperature and the solution flow rate change from 75 to 95 °C and 1.2–2.7 L/min, respectively, the coefficient of performance (COP) in the single-stage absorption refrigeration system (SSARS) varies from 0.211 to 0.412. At an increased evaporation temperature of approximately 10 °C, as the hot water inlet temperature and flow rate increase from 70 to 80 °C and 1.18–2.89 L/min, respectively, the COP in the SSARS varies from 0.238 to 0.552, while the COP in LCARS is improved and varies from 0.470 to 0.617. The LCARS increases the COP by a maximum of 91.04 % and can utilize a lower-grade heat source more efficiently due to its higher optimal COP at reduced hot water inlet temperatures. This study provided one feasible technical approach of combined use of R134a-DMETEG and LCARS to make up for the application limitations of traditional working pairs, contributing to application promotions of absorption systems, especially for the occasions with high requirement on safety and lightweight.

The development of low-cost, highly active, and robust electrocatalysts for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds a pivotal role in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a two-step method was presented to synthesize CoS 2 /CoP heterostructures grown on carbon cloth (CoS 2 /CoP/CC). The precursor Co(OH)F/CC synthesized through the hydrothermal process can be successfully converted into CoS 2 /CoP/CC catalyst via gas-phase phosphorization and sulfurization. The as-obtained CoS 2 /CoP/CC exhibited promising performances for HER and OER with low overpotentials of 90 and 334 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. The improved electrocatalytic performance of the CoS 2 /CoP/CC can be attributed to the strong electron interactions and synergistic efforts between CoS 2 and CoP, abundant active sites of the heterostructures, and enhanced smaller charge-transfer resistance.

Electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO 2 − ) can satisfy the necessity for NO 2 − contaminant removal and deliver a sustainable pathway for ammonia (NH 3 ) generation. Its practical application yet requires highly efficient electrocatalysts to boost NH 3 yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE). In this study, CoP nanoparticle-decorated TiO 2 nanoribbon array on Ti plate (CoP@TiO 2 /TP) is verified as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the selective reduction of NO 2 − to NH 3 . When measured in 0.1 M NaOH with NO 2 − , the freestanding CoP@TiO 2 /TP electrode delivers a large NH 3 yield of 849.57 μmol h −1 cm −2 and a high FE of 97.01% with good stability. Remarkably, the subsequently fabricated Zn–NO 2 − battery achieves a high power density of 1.24 mW cm −2 while delivering a NH 3 yield of 714.40 μg h −1 cm −2 .

Cost-effective non-noble metal CoP/Co 3 O 4 catalyst for AB hydrolysis. • TOF of 9.8 min -1 and Ea of 51.87 kJ/mol for AB hydrolysis over CoP/Co 3 O 4 . • Reaction kinetics: pseudo-first-order in catalyst, pseudo-zero-order in AB. Hydrogen production via ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis represents a promising pathway for advancing the hydrogen economy. Developing cost-effective, highly active catalysts for this reaction is imperative, yet remains a significant challenge. Herein, a precursor of chrysanthemum-like Co 3 O 4 was synthesized from cobalt chloride hexahydrate via hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination in air. Then,non-noble metal CoP/Co 3 O 4 cocatalyst was fabricated through a simple solid phosphidation at 300 °C using chrysanthemum-like Co 3 O 4 and NaH 2 PO 2 . The as-prepared samples were comprehensively analyzed to determine their composition, structure, morphology using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic performance of the CoP/Co 3 O 4 composite toward hydrogen evolution from AB hydrolysis was systematically evaluated. The hydrogen evolution rate and turnover frequency (TOF) of the CoP/Co 3 O 4 -catalyzed hydrolysis of AB were further evaluated under various conditions. The results indicate that at a phosphidation ratio of m (Co 3 O 4 ) / m (NaH 2 PO 2 ) = 0.1, the CoP/Co 3 O 4 exhibits superior catalytic activity toward AB hydrolysis, achieving a TOF of 9.8 min -1 and an activation energy determined to be 51.87 kJ·mol −1 . The reaction kinetics followed pseudo-first-order dependence on catalyst concentration and pseudo-zero-order dependence on AB concentration. The remarkable performance of CoP/Co 3 O 4 can be attributed to its chrysanthemum-like morphology, which provides abundant accessible active sites. Given its low cost, this catalyst represents a promising, non-precious alternative for hydrogen generation. Download: Download high-res image (226KB) Download: Download full-size image

With the global transition toward sustainable energy, the development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions is essential for practical hydrogen production. Although platinum-based catalysts exhibit outstanding HER activity, their scarcity and high cost severely hinder large-scale deployment in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. As a result, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing earth-abundant alternatives. Among them, cobalt phosphide (CoP) has emerged as one of the most promising non-noble-metal catalysts owing to its favorable electrical conductivity and intrinsic catalytic activity. However, achieving simultaneously high activity and long-term durability in acidic media remains a major challenge. In particular, the insufficient hydrogen adsorption capability of CoP limits reaction kinetics, while the harsh acidic and strongly reductive operating environment can induce excessive reduction and structural degradation of active metal centers, resulting in a pronounced activity-stability trade-off. Therefore, developing effective strategies to regulate the electronic structure of CoP and overcome this fundamental limitation is of great scientific and technological significance. Herein, bismuth (Bi) doping is selectively introduced as an effective strategy to modulate the electronic structure of CoP for enhanced acidic hydrogen evolution. The resulting optimal Bi-CoP/CC catalyst exhibits significantly improved HER activity, delivering an overpotential of 83 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 33 mV dec −1 , outperforming pristine CoP. Moreover, it exhibits remarkably improved catalytic stability, with only a 4 mV loss in performance after 140 h of continuous operation. Experimental results and further density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Bi doping increases the Co oxidation state while decreasing the P valence, which strengthens Co-P d – p orbital hybridization, optimizes hydrogen adsorption kinetics, and reinforces metal-ligand bonding, thereby accounting for the enhanced activity and stability. Furthermore, a proton exchange membrane water (PEM) electrolyzer assembled with Bi-CoP/CC as the cathode and IrO 2 supported on Pt-Ti felt as the anode exhibits a cell voltage of 1.683 V at 500 mA cm −2 and maintains stable operation for over 140 h at 60 °C. These results demonstrate the practical applicability of the Bi-engineering strategy under industrially relevant operating conditions. More importantly, this work establishes a clear correlation between electronic structure regulation and the simultaneous enhancement of catalytic activity and durability. Our findings provide valuable guidance for overcoming the activity-stability trade-off in acidic CoP HER electrocatalysts and can be extended to other non-precious transition-metal compounds, offering a general strategy for the development of high-performance PEM electrolyzers. Bi engineering reconstructs the electronic structure of CoP by strengthening Co–P d – p hybridization, overcoming the activity–stability trade-off for efficient and durable acidic HER. To address the pressing challenges of energy shortages and environmental sustainability, photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production has emerged as a promising strategy for solar energy conversion. While semiconductor catalysts exhibit significant potential in photocatalysis, their practical applications are hindered by limitations such as inefficient charge separation and insufficient active sites. Designing and preparing efficient, non-precious co-catalysts is therefore essential. In this work, we synthesized cobalt phosphide with phosphorus vacancy defects (vp-CoP) hollow microsphere co-catalysts and loaded them with indium zinc sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 ) nanosheets to construct vp-CoP@ZnIn 2 S 4 (vp-CoP@ZIS) heterojunction photocatalysts. Under visible light irradiation, the vp-CoP@ZIS photocatalyst achieved a hydrogen production rate of 7.4 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 7.6 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . This remarkable enhancement arises from the synergistic effects between vp-CoP and ZnIn 2 S 4 . Specifically, the introduction of single-atom phosphorus vacancies significantly improved electron transfer efficiency and promoted charge separation within the heterojunction. This innovative design and synthesis strategy underscores the potential of vp-CoP@ZIS as a robust photocatalyst for solar-driven hydrogen production, providing a sustainable pathway for efficient solar energy utilization.

The development of efficient and stable non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts is of great significance, but it remains a great challenge. Herein, we have constructed Co/CoP@NC heterojunction catalyst loaded with Co and CoP particles on a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) substrate using the pyrolysis-oxidation-phosphating strategy. The synergistic effect of Co and CoP particles on the NC substrate increases the active specific surface area, accelerates the charge transfer rate, and improves the intrinsic activities of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Co/CoP@NC catalyst exhibits superior HER and OER performance. Specifically, the overpotentials required for Co/CoP@NC to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 are 142 and 186 mV for HER and OER, respectively. This study provides new insights into the design and synthesis of efficient and stable Co-based heterostructure catalysts.

The crystalline CoP@ amorphous WP 2 core–shell nanowire arrays are oriented grown on the Ni foam (CoP@WP 2 /NF). The amorphous WP 2 shell provides more active sites, and the interface charge coupling accelerates the kinetic of the catalytic reaction, making the CoP@WP 2 /NF catalysts excellent activity. In acidic, only 13 and 97 mV overpotentials are needed to reach 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, which are the lowest overpotentials among all reported Transition metal phosphide (TMP) catalysts, of course, much lower than that of the Pt/C catalyst (31 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , 120 mV at 100 mA cm −2 ). In alkaline, the Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials at 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 are 68 and 136 mV, respectively, which are also lower than that of most reported TMPs catalysts. The CoP@WP 2 /NF catalysts also show excellent Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline, and its OER overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 is only 254 mV. The voltage of the CoP@WP 2 /NF-2h‖CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h cell is only 1.37 V at 10 mA cm −2 , which is even lower than that of Pt/C‖Ru 2 O cell (1.52 V). Specially, when the current density is greater than 150 mA cm −2 , the energy consumption advantage of the CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h‖CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h cell is more obvious.

Producing Hydrogen by electrolysis of water is a sustainable renewable energy conversion method. The most important is to design and prepare high performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis . Herein, aerogels of Se/CoP and Se/Fe–CoP with unique 3D porous structure have been synthesized for HER and OER, respectively, through a simple and controllable strategy of sol-gel, parkerising and doping. The catalysts of Se/CoP AGs and Se/Fe–CoP AGs served as cathode and anode have only overpotentials of 105 mV and 230 mV, and the assembled electrolytic cell by them has a voltage of 1.59 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The mechanism of the enhanced electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to their original structure and the electronic regulation: 3D porous aerogel with high specific surface area and well–developed pore structure provides rich exposed active sites and guarantees effective ion diffusion and H 2 /O 2 release during water splitting; the electronic modulation is achieved by selenite etching and Fe heteroatom doping to result the binding energy shift of Co to improve the catalytic performance. This work provides an effective way for the application of aerogel materials in the electrical decomposition of water.

Developing non-noble metal catalysts with superior catalytic activity and excellent durability is critically essential to promote electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production. Morphology control as a promising and effective strategy is widely implemented to change the surface atomic coordination and thus enhance the intrinsic catalytic performance of current electrocatalysts. Herein, a series of cobalt phosphide (CoP) electrocatalysts with tunable morphologies of nanosheets, nanowires, nanorods, and nanoblocks have been prepared for the enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by only adjusting the amount of ammonium fluoride (NH4F) in the hydrothermal process. Benefiting from the large active area, high surface activity, and favorable ion and gas diffusion channels, the clustered CoP nanorods obtained at a concentration of 0.15 M NH4F show the best HER performance with only an overpotential of 71 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and a low Tafel slope of 60.75 mV dec–1 in 1 M KOH. After 3000 CV cycles and 24 h durability tests, there is only a very slight degradation of performance owing to its outstanding stability and robust substrate adhesion.

Rational design of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for scalable and sustainable hydrogen production from economical water-alkali splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that coupling NiO x and CoP could effectively boost overall HER kinetics through lowing the H 2 O dissociation barrier, accelerating the OH* transfer process, and providing the rapid H* migration kinetics as well as the appropriate H* energetics. Based on these findings, we successfully prepared a three-dimensional (3D) self-supported electrode of ultrathin CoP nanosheets directly grown on the surface-oxidized Ni nanotube arrays via a simple and scalable electrochemical synthesis method. As expected, such a heterostructure electrode exhibits superior alkaline HER performance with low overpotentials of 51 and 164 mV to drive the current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming most of the efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.
