BACKGROUND Insect odorant receptors (ORs) play a crucial role in the peripheral olfactory system in detecting odorants. The ORs of Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus (RWW), namely LoryOR7, LoryOR20 and LoryOR27, have been identified, yet only LoryOR20 has been functionally characterized and shown to respond to phenylacetaldehyde (PAA). Most LoryORs remain to be further explored. RESULTS Quantitative real-time (qRT)-PCR revealed significant expression of LoryOR24 in the antennae. We used the Xenopus laevis oocyte expression system and two-electrode voltage clamp (TEVC) technique to express LoryOR24/LoryOrco to detect the effects of rice volatiles, and two rice volatiles were found to be active. As the concentration of ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal gradually increased, the EAG response amplitude of RWWs also increased, peaking at 100 μg μL −1 (8.09 ± 0.61 mV). The behavioral assay confirmed that RWWs exhibited a significant response to 10 μg μL −1 ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal, with an attraction rate of 77.51%. After silencing LoryOR24 via RNAi, RWWs showed significantly reduced electrophysiological and behavioral responses. Furthermore, molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis identified that residue F133 is critical for the ligand binding and functional activation of LoryOR24. CONCLUSION The results of our study reveal the molecular basis underlying RWW's recognition of ( E , E )-2,4-heptadienal, providing a foundation for the discovery of potential genetic targets at the peripheral olfactory perception level. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Wearable human–machine interaction remains a huge challenge when various flexible electronics have been developed to date, for which the information input seems more difficult than the information output such as display devices. Here in this work, an e-skin for handwriting input was disclosed based on a double network hydrogel of gluten protein and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) that is cross-linked by borax. The hydrogel can tightly adhere onto human skin, being stretchable, self-healable, and working properly even under breakage, which perfectly match the requirements of the e-skin for human–machine interaction. Under the assistant of deep learning, the handwriting of letter and words on it can be recognized with high accuracy of above 89%, even under tensile state or destruction. In addition, this flexible device is biocompatible and biodegradable benefiting from the protein and PVA networks, which make it suitable as a wearable e-skin and being free of electronic wastes. The finding of this work may open a window for the development of e-skin for the two-way human–machine interaction.

The rapid identification of chemical composition, temperature, and dynamic behavior of leaked liquids by robots during accidental spills of hazardous chemicals would significantly reduce the potential risks to both human health and the environment. Here, we designed a flexible, palm-shaped liquid-sensing e-skin (PSLSES) featuring 128 metal electrodes fabricated via flexible printed circuit (FPC) technology and coated with a fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) film. By capturing the local triboelectrification signals along the droplet's trajectory, PSLSES enables multimodal dynamic liquid sensing, simultaneously achieving liquid composition identification, temperature sensing, as well as droplet motion tracking through visualized trajectory patterns. Integrated with a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN), PSLSES achieves an ultrahigh identification accuracy of 99.5% across 21 types of liquids, with a high monitoring resolution down to the ppb level and 98% accuracy in identifying liquid temperature. This includes deionized water, acids, bases, salts, and organic solutions, demonstrating broad liquid identification versatility. Compared with previously reported E-skin systems, it achieved faster identification (0.3 s), a lower detection limit (0.1 ppb), broader liquid recognition, and higher accuracy. The integration of PSLSES into wearable robotics systems opens new ways for robots to assist humans in analyzing and handling chemical leakage in hazardous environments.

Non-Hg catalyst is vital for the cleaner production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), whereas the usual pure metal or pure metal salt precursor is too expensive for non-Hg catalysts preparation. Herein, a relatively cheap electronic waste (E-waste) leaching solution was employed as precursor to prepare acetylene hydrochlorination catalyst (EWC) for the first time. Resultantly, relatively better catalytic performance than that of pure metal salt-based catalysts was achieved on EWC. Additionally, Au, Ni, Sn, and S could play a positive role than other coexisting ions, whereas other elements would hardly have any impact at all. After Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H 2 -temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) studies, it was proved that catalytic performance of EWC is mainly attributed to the efficient dispersion effect of other metals on active species like copper. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) study further revealed that other metal components “solvent” role hindered the agglomeration of the active Cu component. This study offered a new route for decreasing the cost of vinyl chloride monomers (VCMs) in non-Hg preparation.

Constructed an E. coli -ZnIn 2 S 4 biohybrid for photocatalytic H 2 production. • Achieved a high H 2 yield of 335 μmol under optimized conditions. • Demonstrated a synergistic effect surpassing individual component performance. • Revealed improved charge separation at the bio-abiotic interface. • Identified light-induced redirection of microbial metabolic flux. Semiconductor-microorganism hybrid systems exhibit considerable potential for light-driven hydrogen production via water splitting. However, their performance is limited by the efficiency of electron transfer at the bio-abiotic interface and the stability of the hybrid system. In this study, we constructed a novel light-driven hybrid hydrogen production system utilizing Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS). E. coli interacts with ZIS surface through specific interfacial interactions facilitated by electrostatic adsorption and forms robust connections via metal-nonmetal chemical bonds. The E. coli -ZIS hybrid demonstrated a significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution activity compared to pure ZIS or E. coli systems alone, achieving a hydrogen yield of 335 μmol within 3 h. Metabolic analysis revealed that ZIS can comprehensively regulate the microbial metabolic network to accelerate substrate decomposition and drive the reaction toward hydrogen production. By leveraging the light-enhanced synergistic mechanism of E. coli metabolic hydrogen production, the E. coli -ZIS composite system achieves efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen production.

The Diels–Alder (DA) reaction between 3-methyl-3-penten-2-one (MP) and myrcene is experimentally examined and theoretically modeled as part of the Iso E Super synthesis process. The results reveal that the DA reaction between MP and myrcene follows a typical electron-demand mechanism, and the para -product (2) is the most stable structure. With the addition of the AlCl 3 catalyst, the reaction energy barrier drops significantly from 132.85 to 61.38 kJ/mol, easing the reaction conditions. The AlCl 3 catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity among the catalysts tested, especially in isooctane solvent, of which the conversion of myrcene reaches 88.51% and the total selectivity for the cyclization intermediate of Iso E Super is 92.86%. Additionally, it was observed that increasing the Lewis acidity strength leads to higher conversion and selectivity for the para-product of myrcene. This can be attributed to the enhanced electrophilicity of the second carbon atom in MP upon interaction with the catalyst, which makes it more reactive towards the electron-rich carbon atoms of myrcene.

This study introduces a radial-hierarchical, diffusion-enhanced spatiotemporal sensing paradigm for volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis via an integrated microchamber paper-based chromatomimetic e-nose. The proposed system synergizes interlayer spatiotemporal dynamics with planar spatial variance by employing a radially symmetric electrode array and a hierarchical porous chemoresistive ink (CuP@G). This design leverages molecular diffusion gradients across the sensing plane, enabling precise discrimination of complex VOC mixtures through multidimensional “spatiotemporal fingerprints”. A physics-informed framework integrates molecular transport principles with multitask learning convolutional neural network (MTL-CNN) analytics, achieving unprecedented resolution in real-sample classification. Systematic validation demonstrates superior performance in discriminating diverse VOCs, binary mixtures, and authentic tobacco samples (origin and level classification accuracy: 92–99%). This work establishes a scalable blueprint for high-fidelity VOC analytics, bridging gas diffusion physics with intelligent signal processing to advance e-nose technology toward precision-driven design.

Phloroglucinol is a three-hydroxyl phenolic compound and has diverse physiological and pharmacological activities such as antivirus and anti-inflammatory activities. Chemical synthesis of phloroglucinol suffered from many drawbacks such as high cost and environmental pollution. To avoid the above issues, microbial phloroglucinol biosynthesis was successfully accomplished in this study, while the abundant and low-cost acetate was used as the main carbon source. Firstly, the toxicity of phloroglucinol was tested, and E. coli BL21(DE3) could tolerate 5 g/L phloroglucinol. The ability of phloroglucinol synthase (PhlD) for catalyzing malonyl-CoA to phloroglucinol was confirmed, and E. coli BL21(DE3) expressing PhlD and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) could produce 1107 ± 12 mg/L phloroglucinol from glucose. Then, E. coli BL21(DE3) was engineered to utilize acetate to produce 228 ± 15 mg/L phloroglucinol. Then, the endogenous citrate synthase (GltA) which could catalyze oxaloacetate and acetyl-CoA generated from acetate to citrate was knocked down by CRISPRi system in order to enhance the carbon flux for phloroglucinol production, and the titer was improved to 284 ± 8 mg/L. This work demonstrated that acetate could be used as low-cost substrate to achieve the biosynthesis of phloroglucinol and provided an example of effective utilization of acetate.

Introduction: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a fatal chronic lung disease that causes structural damage and decreased lung function and has a poor prognosis. Currently, there is no medicine that can truly cure PF. Vitamin E (VE) is a group of natural antioxidants with anticancer and antimutagenic properties. There have been a few reports about the attenuation of PF by VE in experimental animals, but the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Methods: Bleomycin-induced PF (BLM-PF) mouse model, and cultured mouse primary lung fibroblasts and MLE 12 cells were utilized. Pathological examination of lung sections, immunoblotting, immunofluorescent staining, and real-time PCR were conducted in this study. Results: We confirmed that VE significantly delayed the progression of BLM-PF and increased the survival rates of experimental mice with PF. VE suppressed the pathological activation and fibrotic differentiation of lung fibroblasts and epithelial-mesenchymal transition and alleviated the inflammatory response in BLM-induced fibrotic lungs and pulmonary epithelial cells in vitro . Importantly, VE reduced BLM-induced ferritin expression in fibrotic lungs, whereas VE did not exhibit iron chelation properties in fibroblasts or epithelial cells in vitro . Furthermore, VE protected against mitochondrial dysmorphology and normalized mitochondrial protein expression in BLM-PF lungs. Consistently, VE suppressed apoptosis in BLM-PF lungs and pulmonary epithelial cells in vitro . Discussion: Collectively, VE markedly inhibited BLM-induced PF through a complex mechanism, including improving iron metabolism and mitochondrial structure and function, mitigating inflammation, and decreasing the fibrotic functions of fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Therefore, VE presents a highly potential therapeutic against PF due to its multiple protective effects with few side effects.

Vitamin E derivatives are particularly effective in chemotherapy drug development because they are nontoxic, biocompatible, and selective. Among them, α-tocopheryl succinate (α-TOS) can act synergistically with some chemotherapeutic agents. However, its hydrophobicity limits its systemic administration, and localized formulations are not available. Herein, we developed an injectable hydrogel based on self-assembled micelles of a triblock amphiphilic derivative of α-TOS (PEG-2VES), in which doxorubicin (DOX) was encapsulated in the core of the micelles for combined chemotherapy. A molecule of α-TOS was grafted onto each end of poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) of different lengths. Hydrogels were prepared by dissolving the polymers or the DOX-loaded micelles in water at room temperature. The subcutaneously injected hydrogels kept their shape and sustainably released the payloads over 7 days without any noticeable inflammatory response. In vitro and in vivo results confirmed the synergistic antitumor effects of the hydrogel and loaded drug. Furthermore, DOX-loaded hydrogels showed greater therapeutic efficiency and fewer toxic side effects than DOX alone. Overall, this hydrogel acts as a multifunctional system that can deliver drug, improve the therapeutic effect, and minimize drug toxicity.

Ultrasonic sterilization (US), as a promising non-thermal sterilization method, exhibits unique superiorities than traditional sterilization methods. In this study, the inactivation mechanism of E. coli O157:H7 under US was investigated in cucumber and bitter gourd vegetable juices. Results revealed that the US treatment showed good antibacterial ability in countering E. coli O157:H7. Through determinations of conductivity and β -galactosidase activity, significant augmentation in membrane permeability of the bacteria was confirmed after the US treatment. The morphologies of the US treated E. coli O157:H7 demonstrated that the integrity of the cell membrane was disrupted by US treatment. SDS-PAGE and LSCM data further proved the disruptive action of US, leading to the leakage of proteins and DNA through the breakage on cell membrane. The decrease of metabolic-related enzyme activity was verified through investigation of bacterial metabolism. The antibacterial mechanism analysis indicated that the US can generate free radicals which resulted in the rise of intracellular oxidative stress, attenuation of energy metabolism and inhibition of hexose monophosphate pathway. As the application verification, the US treatment can cause the deprivation of E. coli O157:H7 cell viability in vegetable juices without obvious impact on the sensory quality.

Two major green leaf volatiles (GLVs) in tea that contribute greatly to tea aroma, particularly the green odor, are (E)-2-hexenal and (Z)-3-hexenal. Until now, their formation and related mechanisms during tea manufacture have remained unclear. Our data showed that the contents of (E)-2-hexenal and (Z)-3-hexenal increased more than 1000-fold after live tea leaves were torn. Subsequently, a new (Z)-3:(E)-2-hexenal isomerase (CsHI) was identified in Camellia sinensis . CsHI irreversibly catalyzed the conversion of (Z)-3-hexenal to (E)-2-hexenal . Abiotic stresses including low temperature, dehydration, and mechanical wounding, did not influence the (E)-2-hexenal content in intact tea leaves during withering, but regulated the proportions of (Z)-3-hexenal and (E)-2-hexenal in torn leaves by modulating CsHI at the transcript level. For the first time, this work reveals the formation of (E)-2-hexenal during tea processing and suggests that CsHI may play a pivotal role in tea flavor development as well as in plant defense against abiotic stresses.
