Insights into Enhanced Peroxydisulfate Activation with B and Fe Co-Doped Biochar from Bark for the Rapid Degradation of Guaiacol

Jian Huang,Yu Zhu,Huiyang Bian,Liang Song,Yifan Liu,Yuancai Lv,Xiaoxia Ye,Chunxiang Lin,Xiaojuan Li

A boron and iron co-doped biochar (B-Fe/biochar) from Masson pine bark was fabricated and used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of guaiacol (GL). The roles of the dopants and the contribution of the radical and non-radical oxidations were investigated. The results showed that the doping of boron and iron significantly improved the catalytic activity of the biochar catalyst with a GL removal efficiency of 98.30% within 30 min. The degradation of the GL mainly occurred through the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OHs) and electron transfer on the biochar surface, and a non-radical degradation pathway dominated by direct electron transfer was proposed. Recycling the B-Fe/biochar showed low metal leaching from the catalyst and satisfactory long-term stability and reusability, providing potential insights into the use of metal and non-metal co-doped biochar catalysts for PDS activation. Keywords:Masson pine bark;biochar;peroxydisulfate activation;B/Fe co-doping

Degradation of Cephalosporin C using MOF-derived Fe-Co bimetal in carbon cages as electro-Fenton catalyst at natural pH

Yaoyu Zhou,Jianlong Wang

Developing high performance electrocatalysts for effective antibiotics elimination for heterogeneous electro-Fenton (Hetero-EF) process is still a challenge. This work synthesized iron/cobalt bimetallic N doped graphitic carbon cages (Fe x Co@NC) from ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Fe dual MOF composite for Cephalosporin C (CEP-C) degradation in the Hetero-EF system at a wide pH range. Results indicated that CEP-C degradation rate and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency by Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst were as high as 82.45% (60 min) and 61.35% (240 min) at natural pH, respectively. The unique structure with FeCo bimetal encapsulated inside the N doped graphitic carbon cages enabled Fe 40 Co@NC to show excellent catalytic reactivity for H 2 O 2 activation. The generated M (•OH) and •OH all contributed to CEP-C degradation. The synergistic effects of Co 0 /Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 0 /Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycles made Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst to continuously activate H 2 O 2 . Moreover, Fe 40 Co@NC catalyst showed good stability in consecutive cycles, and could still remain excellent reactivity when applied for CEP-C degradation from the real CEP-C fermentation residue supernatant. Furthermore, a possible CEP-C degradation pathway was proposed based on the identified intermediates.

Trimetallic MOFs-derived Fe-Co-Cu oxycarbide toward peroxymonosulfate activation for efficient trichlorophenol degradation via high-valent metal-oxo species

Aotian Gu,Kaiwei Chen,Xinyu Zhou,Chunhui Gong,Peng Wang,Yan Jiao,Ping Mao,Kai Chen,Jigen Lu,Yi Yang

Advanced oxidation processes based on high-valent metal species have attracted much attention due to their high reactivity and selectivity in degrading refractory organic pollutants, but the preparation of such catalysts remains a great challenge. Herein, FeCoCu-nitrogen-doped carbon (FeCoCu-NC), a trimetallic catalyst capable of producing high-valent metal species, was synthesized by direct carbonization of core–shell Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The rationally designed catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity in wide pH range and high resistance to common radical scavengers, anions and natural organics. The incorporation of Cu in FeCoCu-NC (TNC X ) not only enhanced the catalytic activity but also changed the activation mechanism of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) from a radical pathway to a non-radical pathway dominated by high-valent metal species. In addition, the TNC 5 /PMS system showed higher trichlorophenol (TCP) removal efficiency and PMS utilization compared to the radical-dominated FeCo-NC/PMS system and the 1 O 2 -dominated CoCu-NC/PMS system. This study provides a facile strategy to the preparation of advanced catalysts from multi-metal MOFs and is expected to provide guidance for the design of heterogeneous high-valent metal catalysts.

Revealing the effect of crystallinity and oxygen vacancies of Fe-Co phosphate on oxygen evolution for high-current water splitting

Xinqiang Liu,Haoran Yin,Shifan Zhang,Menghan Huang,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang,Dandan Cai

Strategically tuning the composition and structure of transition metal phosphates (TMPs) holds immense promise in the development of efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, the effect of crystalline phase transformation for TMPs on the catalytic OER activity remains relatively uncharted. In this study, we have deftly orchestrated the reaction process of anion-etched precursor to induce the amorphization process of FeCo-PO x from crystalline to amorphous states. The as-obtained amorphous FeCo-PO x (A-FeCo-PO x ) exhibited an optimized OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which could be attributed to the flexibility of its amorphous structure and the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies . Moreover, when incorporated into an overall water splitting (OWS) device configured as A-FeCo-POx (+) ||Pt/C (–) , it displayed long-term solid stability, sustaining operation for 300 h at a current density of 200 mA cm −2 . This work not only provides valuable insights into understanding the transformation from crystalline to amorphous states, but also establishes the groundwork for the practical utilization of amorphous nanomaterials in the field of water splitting.

The flame retardant and smoke suppressant effect of transition metal hydroxystannate (MSn(OH)6, M = Fe, Co, Mn) for epoxy resin

Hui Xianghe,Fang Dong,Wang Guifang,Ran Feng,Zhang Xin,Fu Zewei,Ruzimuradov Olim

Perovskite hydroxystannate (MSn(OH) 6 ) has garnered considerable interest in recent years as a novel flame retardant characterized by its low toxicity and environmentally benign properties. In order to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of epoxy resin (EP) matrices, transition metal hydroxystannate (MSn(OH) 6 , M = Fe, Co, Mn) was prepared by a ultrasonic-coprecipitation method and used as flame retardants. The synthesized composites were assessed for their flame retardant characteristics and mechanical properties through the measurement of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the cone calorimetry test (CCT), and universal tensile testing. Upon the incorporation of 10 wt% of the MSn(OH) 6 flame retardants, the flame retardant of EP composites exhibited marked enhancement, especially manganese hydroxystannate (MHS). Compared with pure EP, the EP/MHS-10 composite demonstrated the best performance, reducing the peak of heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), total smoke production (TSP) by 60.0%, 14.4%, and 32.6%, respectively. During the process of combustion, the decomposition of MSn(OH) 6 results in the generation of non-flammable gases and water vapor. In the condensed phase, tin (Sn) and transition metals contribute to the formation of a more protective char residue. The residue serves as a physical barrier, effectively isolating the underlying epoxy (EP) matrix material from heat and oxygen.

An active and stable hydrogen electrode of solid oxide cells with exsolved Fe–Co–Ni nanoparticles from Sr2FeCo0.2Ni0.2Mo0.6O6-δ double-perovskite

Cheng Li,Yatian Deng,Liping Yang,Bo Liu,Dong Yan,Liyuan Fan,Jian Li,Lichao Jia

Sr 2 FeCo 0.2 Ni 0.2 Mo 0.6 O 6-δ (SFCNM) and Sr 2 FeNi 0.4 Mo 0.6 O 6-δ (SFNM) were prepared as the hydrogen electrode materials for solid oxide cells (SOCs) and comparatively investigated by density function theory (DFT) and experiments to demonstrate the benefit of Co addition. The reduced SFCNM (R-SFCNM) and SFNM (R-SFNM) contain exsolved Fe–Co–Ni and Fe–Ni nanoparticles, respectively. DFT indicates that Fe–Co–Ni has optimized combination of the d-band center (descriptor of catalyst activity) and adsorption behavior for H 2 O, H 2 , H, and OH. The cell with SFCNM hydrogen electrode, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte, and La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) oxygen electrode (Cell-SFCNM) demonstrates a higher performance than that with an SFNM hydrogen electrode (Cell-SFNM) at temperatures between 700 and 850 °C in both solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC, 3% H 2 O-97% H 2 /air) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC, 20% H 2 O-80% H 2 /air) modes. At 850 and 700 °C, the peak power density is 1.23 and 0.48 W·cm −2 in SOFC mode, while the current density is 1.25 and 0.37 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V in SOEC mode, respectively. The performance degradation rates at 750 °C are 0.17 mV·h −1 in SOFC and 0.15 mV·h −1 in SOEC modes within 150 h, which are improved by Co doping.

Self-augmented catabolism mediated by Se/Fe co-doped bioceramics boosts ROS storm for highly efficient antitumor therapy of bone scaffolds

Wenjing Yang,Chenhang Ding,Yibing Ji,Chongxian He,Feilong Xiong,Wurikaixi Aiyiti,Cijun Shuai

The overexpression of glutathione (GSH) within the tumor microenvironment has long been considered as the major obstacle for reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based antitumor therapies. To address this challenge, a selenite (SeO 3 2 − ) and ferric ion co-doped hydroxyapatite (SF-HAP) nanohybrid was synthesized, which is then introduced into poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to prepare porous scaffold by selective laser sintering to continuously release Fe 3+ and SeO 3 2− ions. Of great significance is the released SeO 3 2− catabolize GSH to generate superoxide anion (O 2 •− ) rather than directly eliminating GSH, thereby reversing the obstacle posed by its overexpression and achieving a "waste-to-treasure" transformation. The newly generated O 2 •− synergizes with the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) produced by the Fenton reaction between Fe 3+/2+ and hydrogen peroxide, triggering high concentration ROS storms. Collectively, the PLLA/SF-HAP scaffold mediated self-augmented catabolism dynamic progress significantly raised intracellular ROS levels, almost twice as much as PLLA/Fe-HAP scaffold, thereby effectively inducing tumor cell apoptosis. The study provides an innovative inspiration for ROS-based antitumor therapies.

A Comparative Study of Transition Metal (Fe, Co, and Ni) Species Embedded in N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanostructures for Microwave Absorption

Yue Qian,Xiaopeng Luo,Ying Mao,Haiyang Gu,Lan Zhang,Xiaomin Zhang,Xuejing Shen,Rui Zhu,Zhanjun Wu

Transition metal-modified carbon composites have emerged as promising candidates for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption due to their tunable microstructure and tailorable electromagnetic properties. However, the influence of metal species configuration on dielectric loss at the atomic scale remains less understood. In this work, we fabricated three types of M-NC absorbers (M = Fe, Co, and Ni; NC = N-doped carbon) using a unified method that includes templating, pyrolysis, and acid etching. This approach produced samples with similar porous structures, which helped minimize structural differences and isolate the effect of the metal species. Among them, Ni-NC achieved a minimum reflection loss of −39.7 dB at 13.3 GHz with a matching thickness of only 2.0 mm, much better than Fe-NC (−22.5 dB) and Co-NC (−27.3 dB). This superior performance is attributed to the specific metal-N bonding structure, which governs both the interfacial polarization and the electronic structure. Meanwhile, the 3D carbon porous framework promotes impedance matching and extends the EMW propagation path through multiple scattering, collectively enabling superior absorption performance. Radar cross section simulation results confirm the effective EMW attenuation of these composites, particularly Ni-NC, highlighting their potential suitability for stealth applications. This work provides fundamental insights for the rational design of high-performance, lightweight EMW absorbers through precise chemical structure engineering.

A surface-static strategy for constructing a core–shell MOF-derived Fe/Co catalyst for efficient peroxydisulfate activation toward tetracycline degradation

Zhouxiao Zhai,Jingce Bi,Linshan Wang,Ningning Liu,Yi Wang,Xia Zhang,Zhuopeng Wang,Yide Han

It remains challenging to fabricate bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts with efficient redox cycling to active peroxydisulfate (PDS) in advanced oxidation processes for antibiotic removal. Herein, a surface-static synthesis strategy was employed to prepare a bimetallic core–shell catalyst (M@Z(Co 3 Zn 1 )). This strategy retained its original morphology and established synergistic Fe 2 + /Fe 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox cycles to facilitate PDS activation. As a result, the M@Z(Co 3 Zn 1 )/PDS system achieved 97.6% tetracycline (TC) removal within 60 min, with a corresponding k obs value of 0.05742 min −1 , which is significantly higher than those of Z(Co 3 Zn 1 ) (77.1% and 0.01922 min −1 ), M(Fe) (62.0% and 0.01184 min −1 ) and catalysts reported in previous studies. The system maintained excellent stability over five consecutive cycles with low metal leaching. Furthermore, an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model was developed to accurately predict catalytic performance under different operating conditions, demonstrating the potential of machine learning for catalyst-system optimization in wastewater treatment. This work provides a new strategy for the structural regulation of bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts and highlights the integration of machine learning with catalytic process design for antibiotic-contaminated water remediation.

Upcycling distillery waste: N, P, Fe Co-doped porous biochar from excess sludge of sauce-flavor liquor for high-performance supercapacitors

Suxing Luo,Jiang Li,Meizhi Yang,Ping Zeng,Yuanhui Wu

Enhancing supercapacitor performance by incorporating heteroatoms into biochar represents a fascinating strategy. Our study presented an uncomplicated process for creating porous biochar simultaneously doped with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe). The source material was excess sludge from sauce-flavor liquor production, which conveniently provided high initial N and Fe content for the resulting biochar. The phosphorus originated from phytic acid, while gentle activation was achieved using potassium carbonate (K2CO3). We found that adjusting the K2CO3 proportion and activation heating allowed precise control over the final material's characteristics, including its pore network, surface chemistry, plus the ultimate N, P, and Fe levels. Through electrochemical assessment, the N, P, Fe/BC-700-2 sample demonstrated superior performance, exhibiting a specific capacitance up to 141.7 F g−1 when tested at a 1 A g−1 current density in 6 M KOH electrolyte. This efficacy stemmed from several contributing elements: a large specific surface area (BET, 824.5 m2 g−1), abundant structural imperfections coupled with extensive mesoporosity, and advantageous synergistic effects arising from N, P, Fe co-incorporation. This investigation demonstrates that transforming sauce-flavor liquor excess sludge (SFLS) into heteroatom-enriched biochar not only offers significant promise for developing advanced supercapacitor electrode materials but also provides a sustainable pathway for valorizing problematic industrial waste.

Eu/Fe Co-doped Bi2WO6 nanocatalyst: Synergistic photo-Fenton catalysis for rapid dye degradation with robust pH tolerance and ecological safety

Yuanqing Wang,Yusong Pan,Shuhuan He,Run Huang

This study reports an innovative europium-iron co-doped bismuth tungstate catalyst (EF-Bi 2 WO 6 ) for rapid organic pollutant degradation through a visible light-driven photo-Fenton process. The results of degradation experiment verified that the 1-EF-BWO catalyst exhibited superior photo-Fenton catalytic activity relative to single-doped and undoped Bi 2 WO 6 , achieving over 99 % degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 6 min, with a kinetic rate constant of 0.9745 min −1 , which was 4.81 times higher than pure Bi 2 WO 6 (0.1678 min −1 ) and 2.42–2.92 times superior to Eu- or Fe-doped Bi 2 WO 6 . Remarkably, 1-EF-BWO maintained consistent degradation efficiency across a broad pH value and diverse ionic environments, showcasing robust operational adaptability. The enhanced catalytic activity is attributed to synergistic electron transfer mechanisms between Eu 3+ , Fe 3+ , and the Bi 2 WO 6 matrix, which optimized band gap structure to facilitate charge carrier separation. EPR spectroscopy revealed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), photogenerated holes (h + ), and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) served as the primary reactive species driving pollutant mineralization. Reusability tests demonstrated remarkable catalytic stability over multiple cycles. Phytotoxicity assessments revealed that EF-Bi 2 WO 6 -treated wastewater significantly enhanced mung bean germination rates, underscoring its ecological compatibility for sustainable wastewater remediation. These results establish EF-Bi 2 WO 6 as a sustainable, pH-tolerant nanocatalyst with dual advantages of ultrafast degradation kinetics and environmental safety.

Interface engineering to optimize the catalytic activity of Fe, Co, and Ti sites in FeCoP/MXene toward efficient overall water splitting

Wei He-He,Zhang Xin-Xin,Sun Si-Wei,Gai Shi-Li,Yu Hai-Tao,Xie Ying

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs), with tunable electronic structures and diverse compositions, are promising candidates for electrocatalytic water splitting. However, their unsatisfactory electrical conductivity and tendency to aggregate during reactions result in structural instability, ultimately hindering further improvement of their electrocatalytic performance. To address these issues, a bamboo-leaf-like FeCoP/MXene heterojunction was synthesized by hydrothermal and thermal treatments, utilizing highly conductive MXene as the substrate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterization reveal that strong Ti–O–Co/Fe covalent bond are formed between MXene and FeCoP through hybridization of O 2p and Co/Fe 3d orbitals, which enhance the structural stability of the interface and facilitate the effective anchoring of FeCoP on the MXene surface. Consequently, the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the catalyst are improved simultaneously. Additionally, interfacial charge redistribution optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption at the Co, Fe, and Ti sites while promoting the adsorption and activation of water molecules. These factors interact synergistically, leading to enhanced bi-functional electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In a FeCoP/MXene (+||−) two-electrode system, the catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at a potential of 1.5 V, which is superior to the RuO 2 (+)||Pt/C (−) system. The assembled water splitting device exhibits long-term stability for up to 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) equipped with FeCoP/MXene as both anode and cathode achieves an industrial-grade current density of 500 mA cm –2 at 1.83 V. These results highlight the critical role of interfacial engineering in enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of TMPs for water splitting and provide valuable insights for the design of novel bifunctional TMP catalysts.
