Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit excellent natural floatability, posing significant challenges in their separation through flotation processes. Application and interaction mechanism of Fe 2+ in enhancing flotation separation between chalcopyrite and galena was investigated by flotation experiments, wettability analysis, adsorption capacity tests, zeta potential analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This study indicated that Fe 2+ significantly enhanced flotation separation between galena and chalcopyrite. Contact angles of chalcopyrite decreased, while that of galena increased after reaction with Fe 2+ . The addition of Fe 2+ improved the adsorption of the ethyl thiocarbamate on the surface of galena and dramatically reduced that on the surface of chalcopyrite. The zeta potential of the galena and chalcopyrite shifted positively when Fe 2+ was present, and the zeta potential shift of galena was greater than that of chalcopyrite. The presence of Fe 2+ led to an increase in the concentration of total S, S 2− and S n 2- on the surface of galena, and promoted the formation of a ferric hydroxide coating on the surface of chalcopyrite. Thus, the introduction of Fe 2+ effectively enhanced the flotation separation between galena and chalcopyrite.

The hyporheic zone is a crucial ecohydrological interface that plays a substantial role in the biogeochemical activity of iron and its mediated pollutant conversion. It is significantly influenced by dissolved oxygen and temperature fluctuations, but the combined effects and mechanisms are unknown. In this study, the co-transport behavior of goethite colloid (Goe), aqueous Fe 2+ and oxytetracycline (OTC) in groundwater discharge was simulated by column experiments. Our findings reveal that compared with room temperature (25 °C), the penetration rates of these compounds were generally promoted (0.1–7.0 % Goe, 14.1–43.1 % Fe 2+ , 0–19.6 % OTC) at low temperature (10 °C) but inhibited (0–5.0 % Goe, 0–51.0 % Fe 2+ , 0–3.8 % OTC) at high temperature (35 °C). At room temperature (25 °C), only 5 % of the Goe can penetrate the triadic transport system, where the Fe-OTC complex decreased the Zeta potential of Goe, hence improving its transport capacity. Compared with the penetration of individual Fe 2+ , the Fe 2+ transport was increased by 13.2 % due to the promoting effect of OTC on Fe redox cycling, whereas the electron transfer effect between Goe and Fe 2+ inhibited the transport by 46.6 %. The impact of μg/L OTC on the migration of Fe and Goe was dramatically diminished compared to the mg/L level. OTC was eliminated mainly by complex internal oxidation with Fe, weak adsorption, chemisorption, and hydroxyl degradation effects, but these were diminished at low temperatures while intensified at high temperatures. This study provides a deeper understanding of the intricate mechanisms of Fe and antibiotic transport in hyporheic zones, highlighting the significant roles of temperature and chemical interactions, particularly during seasonal changes.

This study evaluated the improvement of bisphenol A (BPA) elimination through hydrogen sulfite (HS) coupling with persulfate (PS) activated by low amounts of Fe 2+ . Under the optimum condition (10 μM Fe 2+ , 0.6 mM HS, 0.8 mM PS, pH = 4.0), 100% BPA (5 μM) was removed within 15 min. Sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were confirmed as the primary active species for BPA degradation in the Fe 2+ /HS/PS system, and the steady-state concentration of SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 was 2.43 × 10 −9 M and 1.67 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Besides, FeHSO 3 + and FeOHSO 3 H + were the main iron species in the Fe 2+ /HS/PS system. The removal potency of BPA depended on the operation parameters, such as chemical reagent dosages, reaction temperature, and the solution initial pH. The impact of NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , and humic acid (HA) on BPA removal was negligible, whereas Cl − , HCO 3 − , and HPO 4 2− restrained BPA decomposition. Two injections of HS could improve the limitation of BPA degradation efficiency due to the rapid consumption of HS in the reaction process. The lower removal efficiency of BPA was observed in real water matrices than that in ultrapure water. Whatever, up to 58.1%, 66.3%, 68.1%, and 88.1% of BPA were removed from domestic wastewater, lake water, river water, and tap water within 10 min, respectively. In addition, the BPA degradation process was characterized by the 3D fluorescence spectra technique, which indicated the BPA oxidation intermediates also have fluorescence characteristics. Moreover, 6 intermediate products were identified, and the possible degradation pathways of BPA were proposed. Additionally, the Fe 2+ /HS/PS system also exerted an excellent performance for the removal of other representative organic contaminants including enrofloxacin, acid orange 7, acetaminophen, and phenol. All results indicated that the Fe 2+ /HS/PS system could be a promising method for organic pollutant removal.

Highly active and stable non-noble metal catalysts are expected to play a critical role in future hydrogen storage and conversion applications. The design of active sites with composite oxides provides a new approach for developing high-performance catalysts. In this study, an Fe-doped Ni/NiO nanocomposite film was constructed on an ionic liquid/water interface to promote hydrogen generation. The optimized Ni/FeNiOx-25 catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity toward ammonia borane hydrolysis, with a turnover frequency of 72.3 min–1. The enhancing effect of Fe2+ doping on Ni/NiO films was confirmed by the improved intrinsic activity and theoretical simulations. Fe ion doping stabilized NiO and prevented NiO from becoming Ni. The interfacial Ni–Fe2+ dual active sites on the FeNiOx and Ni interfaces participated in the targeted adsorption and effective activation of water and NH3BH3 molecules, respectively. The sufficiently exposed plane surface of the nanofilms provided abundant active sites for catalytic reactions. This significant advance will inspire development in the ambient liquid hydrogen storage field.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in adolescents, featuring aggressive tumor growth and early metastasis. Current treatments, including chemotherapy and surgery, are often limited by chemoresistance and postoperative infections. Ferroptosis has emerged as a strategy to overcome chemoresistance, as it is intrinsically iron-dependent, whereas OS often exhibits dysregulated iron metabolism. Halicin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial known to regulate iron metabolism in bacteria, was found to be a ferroptosis inducer for OS in this study. However, its therapeutic efficacy is likely hampered by rapid systemic clearance and poor tumor retention. Accordingly, we developed Halicin@Gel, an injectable hyaluronic acid hydrogel designed for localized and prolonged release. The structure, injectability, drug release behavior, biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and antitumor efficacy of this system were characterized and evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Halicin@Gel exhibited excellent antibacterial activity and significantly inhibited OS cell proliferation and migration in vitro. Mechanistically, Halicin@Gel increased intracellular ROS levels and was associated with p38 MAPK activation, as well as ferroptosis- and apoptosis-related changes. In vivo, Halicin@Gel significantly inhibited tumor growth with minimal systemic toxicity, confirming its therapeutic potential. Thus, these findings support Halicin@Gel as a promising localized therapeutic platform with combined antitumor and antibacterial functions for OS treatment.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is regarded as an endocrine disruptor associated with negative health effects in animals and humans. Laccase from white-rot fungus can enable BPA oxidation and auto-polymerization to circumvent its biotoxicity, but the work concerning the effect mechanisms of divalent and trivalent metal ions (MIs) on BPA polyreaction have rarely been reported. Herein, Trametes versicolor laccase-started BPA conversion within 1 h followed pseudo-first order kinetics, and the rate constant ( k prcs ) and half-life were respectively 0.61 h −1 and 1.14 h. The presence of Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ and Al 3+ exhibited insignificant impact on BPA removal, whereas Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ had a strong inhibiting effect. Compared with MI-free, the k prcs values of BPA respectively lowered 34.4%, 44.3% and 98.4% in the presence of Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ . Enzymatic activity and differential absorption spectrum disclosed that the inhibitory actions were accomplished by two different mechanisms. One is Fe 2+ was preferentially oxidized into Fe 3+ that restrained laccase activity at the initial stage of reaction, and subsequently, the formed Fe 3+ complex bound with laccase T1-Cu site and thus impeded the single-electron transfer system. The other is Mn 2+ was instantly oxidized by laccase to generate Mn 3+ -citrate complex, which completely consumed the dissolved O 2 in solution and consequently terminated BPA removal. Considering environmental bioremediation, T. versicolor laccase-enabled auto-polymerization is a simple and convenient candidate to eliminate BPA in enzymatic wastewater treatment , however the effects of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ on BPA decontamination should be cautiously assessed.

In this study, a boosted peroxydisulfate (PDS)/Fe 2+ Fenton-like system that employing protocatechuic acid (PCA) as complexing reagent to mediate Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ circulation was established. The outcomes presented typical dyes and antibiotics, such as methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B tetracycline, and metronidazole all can be efficiently eliminated in this synergistic process. Under the optimal conditions (1 mmol L -1 PDS, 30 µmol L -1 Fe 2+ and 30 µmol L -1 PCA), the MO removal reached 100% within 80 min at pH 6.7. Furthermore, this system could perform well under the broad pH span (3–7) and realize the effective Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. The masking test and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated sulfate radical (SO 4 ·- ), hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen were responsible for MO elimination in the cooperative process, and SO 4 ·- was the dominant active substance. The MO decomposition byproducts and their evolutions were researched based on the mass spectrum analysis. The effect of inorganic anions in natural water on the PDS/Fe 2+ /PCA system was conducted, and the consequences indicated that Cl - , HCO 3 – and NO 3 – all negatively influenced the MO elimination. The proposed organic co-catalytic Fenton-like method could promote the development of advanced oxidation processes in water treatment.

Cancer cells are susceptible to oxidative stress; therefore, selective elevation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) is considered as an effective antitumor treatment. Here, a liposomal formulation of dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and metal–organic framework (MOF)-Fe 2+ (MD@Lip) has been developed, which can efficiently stimulate ROS-mediated cancer cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. MD@Lip can not only improve aqueous solubility of octahedral MOF-Fe 2+ , but also generate an acidic microenvironment to activate a MOF-Fe 2+ -based Fenton reaction. Importantly, MD@Lip promotes DCA-mediated mitochondrial aerobic oxidation to increase intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which can be consequently converted to highly cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via MOF-Fe 2+ , leading to amplification of cancer cell apoptosis. Particularly, MD@Lip can selectively accumulate in tumors, and efficiently inhibit tumor growth with minimal systemic adverse effects. Therefore, liposome-based combination therapy of DCA and MOF-Fe 2+ provides a promising oxidative stress–associated antitumor strategy for the management of malignant tumors.

Quaternary semiconductor Cu2MSnS4 (M = Co2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Mn2+) nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized via a simple and mild solvothermal method. Cu2FeSnS4 and Cu2CoSnS4 show a spherical shape; Cu2NiSnS4 and Cu2MnSnS4 possess a nail-like structure and a rod-like structure. The four types of nanocrystals exhibit significantly different magnetic properties. Cu2FeSnS4 and Cu2CoSnS4 nanoparticles show ferromagnetic behavior; Cu2MnSnS4 and Cu2NiSnS4 nanorods exhibit superparamagnetic behavior at low temperature. The band gaps of Cu2MSnS4 (M = Co, Fe, Ni, Mn) nanocrystals are in the range of 1.2–1.5 eV, indicating a high potential application in low-cost thin film solar cells.

The removal of contaminants by peroxydisulfate (PDS)/Fe 2+ system is a promising groundwater decontamination technology, while the non-recyclability of Fe 2+ and the restricted mass transfer of contaminants in water limit the decontamination efficiency. Here, we developed carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CM-β-CD) to chelate Fe 2+ coupled with enhancing the solubization of contaminants in groundwater for efficient decontamination. Results showed that a 4.60-fold enhancement in the perchloroethylene (PCE) degradation rate following the addition of 1 g/L CM-β-CD to the PDS/Fe 2+ system. The ternary complex formed by CM-β-CD, Fe 2+ and PCE was confirmed via ultraviolet absorption spectra and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrum. Electron paramagnetic resonance, complemented by chemical probe and radical quenching experiments, identified singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), high-valent iron (Fe(IV)), and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) as the dominant reactive species in the PDS/Fe 2+ /CM-β-CD system, with relative contributions to PCE degradation quantified at 30.4%, 26.2%, and 18.1%, respectively. The presence of humic acid and common inorganic ions showed negligible effects on PCE degradation efficiency. The primary PCE degradation intermediate is dichloromethane, mediated by 1 O 2 , Fe(IV), and •OH, with mineralization occurring via dechlorination pathways. This study developed an environmentally sustainable remediation strategy utilizing CM-β-CD as a dual-functional agent for simultaneous Fe 2+ chelation and contaminant solubilization, enabling efficient groundwater decontamination.

Ferroptosis is an immunogenic form of cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. The balance between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is crucial in inducing ferroptosis, where Fe2+ primarily initiates the Fenton reaction to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in lipid peroxidation and subsequent cell damage. However, the instability of Fe2+, due to its susceptibility to oxidation into Fe3+, poses challenges for effectively triggering ferroptosis. In this study, we report a synthetic method for creating Fe2+-rich nanoworms regulated by oleyl amine, which effectively stabilizes Fe2+. These nanoworms exhibited exceptional efficacy in producing ROS through high Fe2+ proportion and glutathione (GSH) consumption by Fe3+, thereby initiating lipid peroxidation (LPO) and subsequent induction of ferroptosis and immunogenic cell death. The conjugation with tumor-penetrating peptide (iRGD) endowed the accumulation at tumor sites. After coupling with αPD-L1, these nanoworms significantly enhanced their tumor inhibition rate through the combination of ferroptosis and immunotherapy, reducing the tumor volume to 22.52%. This work provides a promising material for combined tumor therapy by inducing ferroptosis and downstream immunotherapy.

This study investigates the activation mechanisms of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using iron-activated carbon (Fe2+/H2O2/AC) for the efficient degradation of amoxicillin (AM) in wastewater. The system achieved a high degradation efficiency of 90% under alkaline conditions (pH 9), with singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) identified as the dominant reactive species through scavenger experiments. High-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis revealed degradation by-products and proposed reaction pathways, including the loss of amine groups, ring-opening oxidation, and bond cleavage. The structural and morphological properties of Fe2+/H2O2/AC were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The BET surface area of Fe2+/H2O2/AC was determined to be 128.36 m2/g, with a mesoporous structure facilitating efficient mass transfer and adsorption. The system was systematically evaluated under varying conditions, including H2O2concentration (25–250 mg/L), catalyst dosage (0.05–1.0 mg/L), and pH (3–10). Kinetic analysis revealed that the degradation process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2= 0.966), while adsorption isotherms were best described by the Langmuir model (R2= 0.98). Ecotoxicity tests indicated that the degradation products are less harmful to aquatic organisms. The system demonstrated excellent stability over three consecutive cycles, highlighting its potential for long-term application in treating pharmaceutical-contaminated wastewater.
