As a promising new-star electrocatalyst, transition metal phosphide (TMP) has been widely applied in electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). However, the current catalytic activity and stability are unsatisfactory. Herein, we started from optimizing the geometric and electronic structure of the catalyst, choosing FeCo Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with rich pores as precursors and epitaxially grown Ni(OH)2 and then connecting them though graphene oxide (GO) by electrostatic interaction, and finally transformed them into ternary TMPs and graphene composites (Fe2P/CoP/Ni5P4/RGO). Due to the porous structure of phosphides and the large surface area and excellent conductivity of reduced graphene oxide (RGO), the Fe2P/CoP/Ni5P4/RGO exposed more active sites, promoted electrolyte diffusion and gas release, and accelerated the charge transport. The synergistic effect among ternary TMPs and between them and RGO made Fe2P/CoP/Ni5P4/RGO a highly efficient electrocatalyst for water splitting with only 57 mV, 232 mV overpotential, and 1.56 V cell voltage for obtaining 10 mA/cm2 current density in HER, OER, and overall water splitting. Benefiting from the protection of RGO, the Fe2P/CoP/Ni5P4/RGO remained the original structure and showed good stability during long-term testing. This work proposed a design thought to improve the activity and stability of metal phosphides that may be extended to other metal organic framework-derived compounds and carbon-based materials composites.

Design and synthesis of earth-abundant elements-based electrocatalysts with sufficient activity and stability remain challenging for oxygen-involved electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. In this work, catalyst with simultaneously engineered Fe-N 4 and Co-N 4 active sites and graphitic carbon multilayer-encapsulated FeCo alloy is developed by pyrolysis of metal salts doped G-g-C 3 N 4 . The obtained composite material exhibits promising catalytic activity and good stability for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte , as evidenced by the positive shift of half-wave potential by 44 mV compared to 20% Pt/C for ORR and the potential of 1.596 V at current density of 10 mAcm −2 for OER. In addition, the thus-assembled rechargeable zinc-air battery using the synthesized material as cathode delivers a maximum power density of 311.2 mWcm −2 with an open circuit potential of 1.51 V and a long-term cycling stability. DFT calculation results indicate that catalyst with composite active sites displays smaller energy barrier than that with single active site.

The preparation of the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials with 3D porous structural, light weight, and high mechanical strength has been receiving greater attention for a long time. A series of light-weight polyetheretherketone/graphite/FeCo ternary heterogeneous composite foams (PEEK/C/FeCo) with high mechanical strength are prepared via thermally induced phase separation. Based on the high compressive strength of PEEK resin and its stable skeleton formed by thermally induced phase separation, the composite foam has high compressive strength and low density. In addition, during the thermally induced phase separation process, porous structures are formed inside the PEEK, and graphite and FeCo particles are uniformly dispersed between the pore structures, the composite foams possess excellent porous structure, moderate dielectric loss, and magnetic loss, exhibiting good absorbing properties. With the low density of 0.49 g cm −3 and high compressive strength of 6.40 MPa, the as-synthesized optimal sample (PEEK-50/C-40/FeCo-10) achieves a minimum reflection loss up to −35.9 dB covering a bandwidth of 3.6 GHz for a thickness of 1.5 mm. In a word, this study provides a novel, economical, and efficient way to obtain a light foam with high mechanical strength and good EMW absorbing property.

The rapid development of wearable and portable electronics is triggering a lot of researches on flexible energy device. Flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with high bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity and superb flexible can be employed as promising power supplies to fulfill these novel electronic devices. Considering the major challenges to the flexible ZABs such as low power density, poor energy efficiency and unsatisfactory mechanical stability, we propose a novel plasma-assistance strategy to prepare highly foldable self-supporting air-electrodes based on nitrogen-doped carbon layer encapsulated Co and FeCo nanoparticles hybrid nanowire arrays (Co-FeCo/N-G). The obtained Co-FeCo/N-G air-electrode show superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. Thus, the flexible ZABs using Co-FeCo/N-G air-electrode achieve a high open circuit voltage of 1.419 V. Furthermore, it exhibits an outstanding peak power density of 82 mW cm −2 , a small discharge-charge voltage gap of 0.61 V at 1 mA cm −2 and long-term durability. Specially, the flexible Co-FeCo/N-G ZAB displays excellent mechanical stability under large deformation conditions, which can be folded into 180° without obvious decay of its performance. Thereby, our work offers a unique insight into design of highly flexible air electrodes with favorable electrocatalytic activity for emerging wearable and portable electronics.

A Zn–air battery serves as an energy storage solution to address fossil energy and environmental concerns. However, sluggish kinetics in oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) demand innovative, cost-effective, and stable bifunctional catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts. In this study, an FeCo-CNTs/KB catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing NH2-MIL-101(Fe) coated with glu-Co and conductive carbon (KB). This hierarchical structure comprises carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grafted onto a carbon matrix, housing abundant FeCo nanoparticles within the nanotubes or matrix. KB introduction enhances FeCo nanoparticle dispersion and fosters uniform CNT formation with smaller diameters, thus exposing active sites. Consequently, the FeCo-CNTs/KB catalyst exhibits remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity: an ORR half-wave potential of 0.84 V and an OER overpotential of 0.45 V (10 mA cm−2). Furthermore, the FeCo-CNTs/KB catalyst in a secondary Zn–air battery showcases enduring charge–discharge performance (≥300 h).

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides on a positive electrode and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites on a negative electrode are the two fundamental crucial problems of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs). These problems have led to low actual specific capacity and poor rate performance of these batteries. In order to resolve these issues at both electrodes simultaneously, we used Fe and Co bimetallic atoms to dope the three-dimensional dodecahedron material ZIF-8, which is used as a monomer to construct a functional modified separator. Owing to the porous structure, high specific surface area, notable interfacial electron conductivity after carbonization, and the synergistic catalytic effect of Fe and Co bimetallic doping, the FeCoDA-CN@PP separator suppresses the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) on the positive electrode and ensures the higher ion/electron rapid diffusion and hence efficient lithium growth during the cycling on the negative electrode. The demonstrated LSBs with the FeCoDA-CN@PP separator deliver a specific discharge capacity of 1404 mAh g–1 at 0.1C. After 500 provided cycles at a rate of 1C, it still offers a specific discharge capacity of 541 mAh g–1 and a stable Coulombic efficiency of >98% with a capacity decay rate of 0.08% per cycle. At a discharge rate of 1 mA cm–2, the symmetrical battery with the FeCoDA-CN@PP separator was still able to maintain a stable voltage distribution and an overpotential of 31 mV after 500 h. The outcomes pave an auspicious approach for the development of LSBs with long-cycle life and higher capacity, which may further promote the industrialization and commercialization of LSBs.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in hydrogen production, but its potential is limited by the lack of scalable and stable electrocatalysts for industrial applications. In this study, we developed a repeated impregnation-drying co-precipitation (RIP) method to prepare CoFe-based OER electrocatalysts. We found that the optimized FeCo(OOH) x -5/NF catalyst achieves an overpotential of 340 mV at 500 mA cm −2 , significantly outperforming catalysts prepared via hydrothermal or chemical bath deposition methods. The RIP method accelerates the co-precipitation rate of metal ions and helps repair defects between the catalytic layer and the nickel foam substrate, promoting the three-dimensional growth of the catalyst layer. Notably, the entire reaction occurs in air, and the solution can be reused, ensuring the optimal utilization of all ions. Additionally, the FeCo(OOH) x -5/NF catalyst was scaled up to 6000 cm 2 to assess the feasibility of roll-to-roll industrial production. In practical alkaline water electrolysis, electrolyzers equipped with FeCo(OOH) x -5&RANEY Nickel catalysts demonstrated excellent performance, achieving 500 mA cm −2 at 1.75 V in 6.0 M KOH. This work provides valuable insights into the design of efficient alkaline OER electrocatalysts, such as FeCo(OOH) x /NF, for promising industrial applications.

Elaborate engineering of heterostructure and composition to regulate the electroactivities remains a pronounced challenge. Herein, a self-supported 2D/2D heterostructure monolith is constructed by interlinked FeCo-hydroxides nanosheets tightly interlacing with aligned Cu 0.76 Co 2.24 O 4 nanoplates. Due to the well-defined hierarchical nanoarrays and desirable interfacial coupling, the monolithic catalyst can guarantee the rapid charge transfer and mass transport pathways for accelerated surface kinetics, leading to manifestly improved electroactivities and stability toward trifunctional catalysis. Both experimental and theoretical calculations unravel the enriched multimetal active sites for intermediates adsorption and the synergistic interplay of the heterostructure to achieve enhanced catalytic efficiency. Consequently, the heterostructure catalyst contributes to high-performance rechargeable/flexible all-solid-stated Zn-air batteries and water electrolyzer with an ultralow potential of 1.51 V. Moreover, self-powered water splitting system driven by flexible Zn-air batteries delivers a high H 2 generation rate. This cost-effective heterostructure monolith could open an intriguing avenue for advancing all-in-one films toward portable energy conversion/storage.

A self-supporting electrode (FeCo-MOF/CNFs) combining iron cobalt bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (FeCo-MOFs) with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was applied as the anode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The introduction of FeCo-MOFs enhanced graphitization degree and electrical conductivity, which endowed FeCo-MOF/CNFs with excellent electrocatalytic performance and good biocompatibility. The hierarchical porous structure of FeCo-MOF/CNFs provided abundant attachment sites for electroactive bacteria (EAB) and facilitated rapid electron transfer. The MFC equipped with FeCo-MOF/CNFs anode (FeCo/CNFs-MFC) exhibited considerable power generation output (maximum power density: 5.3 ± 0.2 W/m 2 , coulombic efficiency: 54 ± 4 %). In addition, FeCo/CNFs-MFC achieved a direct electron transfer (DET) catalytic current density of 0.63 A/m 2 . FeCo-MOF/CNFs could simultaneously enhance the bioelectrocatalysis activity and promote the DET process of EAB, which provided an effective way to improve the sluggish extracellular electron transport process of the MFC anode.

Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) catalysts are promising alternatives to precious metal-based bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, FeCo@nitrogen doped carbon nanotube/nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO) catalyst with unique 3D heterostructure was synthesized through one-step pyrolysis of FeCo-ZIF-8 precursor anchored on graphene oxide (FeCo-ZIF-8/GO). Benefiting from the coupling of FeCo dual-metal sites with nitrogen-doped carbon substrates, the FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO catalyst achieved extraordinary bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity, exhibiting a high ORR half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.881 V (vs. RHE), which was superior to the Pt/C catalyst (0.838 V), and OER overpotential of 343 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , merely inferior to RuO 2 by 33 mV. The resulting ΔE (defined as E j=10 − E 1/2 ) reaches an impressively low value of 0.69 V, highlighting its superior reversible oxygen electrocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, achieving a high-power density of 240 mW cm −2 and open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.488 V in ZAB applications, superior to that of Pt/C + RuO 2 in ZAB (1.447 V; 143 mW cm −2 ). Flexible solid-state ZAB with FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO achieves 1.416 V OCV and 47.4 mW cm −2 power density, remaining stable even when bent 180°. This study guides design of dual-site non-precious metal bifunctional oxygen catalysts.

The development of cost-effective and highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for advancing clean energy and energy storage systems. Herein, we prepared a novel Zn-promoted FeCo alloy anchored on an N-doped carbon aerogel (Zn-FeCo@NCA) derived from cellulose aerogel as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst using high-temperature carbothermal reduction. This process provides a solution to the problem of limiting the industrialization of metal aerogels by employing traditional chemical reductants and enhances cost-effectiveness due to the use of non-precious metals. The Zn-FeCo@NCA aerogel displays excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 270 mV (10 mA cm−2) and a high mass activity of 0.429 A mg−1, surpassing most commercial precious metal catalysts. Electrochemical in situ Raman spectroscopy indicates that Zn-FeCo@NCA undergoes self-reconfiguration during the OER to form CoOOH as a truly catalytically active species. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that this modulated electronic structure favors the reduction of the adsorption energy of the intermediate O*, thereby accelerating the electron transfer kinetics and enhancing the OER activity. When integrated into an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the Zn-FeCo@NCA anode achieves a current density of 1000 mA cm−2 at 2.18 V per cell, outperforming commercial RuO2. In conclusion, benefiting from the optimized electronic interactions between Zn-promoted FeCo alloys and N-doped carbon aerogels, as well as the “pearl-like” hierarchical structure, large specific surface area, and high electrical conductivity, Zn-FeCo@NCA is expected to be an ideal candidate for the anode of AEMWEs.

The introduction of transition bimetallic alloys can effectively improve oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. However, the alloy particles are inclined to dissolve under harsher conditions, resulting in a serious decrease in catalytic activity and stability. Herein, an efficient ORR catalyst, FeCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in N,S co-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCo10-NSCNTs), was developed through a self-catalyzed growth strategy. Due to the delicate structural design, the N,S co-doped structure can effectively improve the ORR performance by modulating the electronic properties and surface polarity of the carbon substrate, and the randomly connected carbon nanotube structure with large specific surface area can further enhance the adsorption and dissociation of gas molecules, accelerating the kinetics of gas participation in the reaction. Carbon-encapsulated FeCo alloys are beneficial for improving catalytic activity and durability. The FeCo10-NSCNTs displayed excellent ORR activity with a half-wave potential of E1/2 = 0.84 V and robust stability of 13 k cycles. More impressively, the assembled liquid-state Zn–air battery (ZAB) with FeCo10-NSCNTs as the air-electrode delivers an output power density of 146.68 mW cm−2 along with excellent operation durability. The assembled all-solid ZAB has good cyclic stability under 0–180° bending conditions. The synthesized N,S co-doping, carbon nanotubes and FeCo alloys provide important guidance for the construction of cheap non-noble metal–carbon hybrid nanomaterials.
