A novel adsorbent (FeOOH@PU) for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal was synthesized using a polyurethane foam (PU) and FeOOH via a facile one-step method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) characterized the adsorbent. The influence of environmental factors was investigated to evaluate the adsorption behavior for Cr(VI). Furthermore, adsorption dynamic and adsorption isotherm models described the adsorption performance. This adsorbent also treated electroplating wastewater and remediated simulated Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The adsorbent effectively removed Cr(VI) with a high adsorption rate; its equilibrium rate constant was 13 times that of FeOOH. Cr(VI) removal was a monolayer adsorption process and the maximum adsorption capacity of FeOOH@PU reached 34.9 mg Cr/g. Electrostatic attraction was the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal. Electroplating wastewater became clear and the Cr(VI) concentration decreased from 9.76 to 0.042 mg/L after treatment with FeOOH@PU. Cr enrichment in rice seedlings grown in remediated soil decreased from 7.687 to 6.295 mg Cr/kg. These results suggested that FeOOH@PU was a promising adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal and Cr(VI) stabilization.

The superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic filtration membranes with robust anti-oil-fouling performance have aroused extensive research enthusiasm for oily wastewater treatment. However, it is inevitable that this kind of anti-fouling membrane will be contaminated when facing high-viscosity crude oil. In this work, green tannic acid (TA) was introduced in sodium alginate (SA) nanofibrous membrane (NFM) to form stable TA-Fe(iii) complexes via coordination reaction. Then, a layer of rough β-FeOOH nanoparticles was uniformly constructed on the surface of the nanofiber via in situ mineralization. The obtained SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM displayed outstanding underwater superoleophobic and anti-crude oil-fouling performance. Moreover, the SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM exhibited high separation efficiency (99.64%) and flux (1899 ± 251 L m −2 h −1 ) for crude oil-in-water emulsion. In addition, SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM with fascinating photo-Fenton self-cleaning performance can degrade pollutants adsorbed on the membrane surface. These surprising advantages endow our SA/TA/β-FeOOH NFM have promising prospects in complex oily wastewater treatment.

A novel Sb 2 O 3 /Sb 2 S 3 /FeOOH photoanode was fabricated via a simple solution impregnation method along with chemical bath deposition and post-sulfidation. The X-ray diffractometry, Raman measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the Sb 2 O 3 /Sb 2 S 3 /FeOOH thin films are successfully prepared. SEM−EDS analyses reveal that the surface of Sb 2 O 3 /Sb 2 S 3 thin films becomes rough after the immersion in the FeCl 3 solution. The optimized impregnation time is found to be 8 h. The FeOOH co-catalyst loaded Sb 2 O 3 /Sb 2 S 3 electrode exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density of 0.45 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V versus RHE under simulated 1 sun, which is approximately 1.41 times compared to the photocurrent density of the unloaded one. Through the further tests of UV−Vis spectroscopy, the electrochemical impedance spectra, and the PEC measurements, the enhancement can result from the increased light-harvesting ability, the decreased interface transmission impedance, and the remarkably enhanced carrier injection efficiency.

Although membrane separation technology has been widely used for oily wastewater treatment in recent years, surface fouling still poses a great threat to application. Due to the strong adsorption of oil droplets onto membrane surface and within pores, pristine membranes are inadequate for long-term oil-water separation applications. Here, a novel photocatalytic nanofiber membrane via microchip grafting with in-situ mineralization was proposed. N-Methylolacrylamide (NMA) was successfully grafted on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) by microfluidic electrospinning, and the grafting amount was 9 times that under conventional bottle reaction conditions. The in-situ mineralization time via the polyphenol-metal network was reduced from 27 h to 18 h, while the mineralization rate increased by threefold compared with the bottle-grafted membrane. For oil-water emulsion separation, the developed PVDF-g-NMA@FeOOH membrane successfully showed the high permeability of 38870 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with the outstanding rejection rate of 99.2%. It displayed great photocatalytic self-cleaning performance, and the flux recovery rate was up to 95.8% after cycle tests. Methhyllene blue (MB) removal rate reached 96.3% in 50 min. The developed membrane holds great promise for applications in oil-water separation and organic contaminant degradation.

The Cu₂O/CoO/FeOOH heterostructure achieves high Faradaic efficiency and ammonia yield at low applied potential. • Further analysis reveals heterointerface‑tuned electronic structure and accelerated synergistic electron transfer. • The Cu₂O/CoO/FeOOH heterostructure exhibits excellent long‑term durability. Electrochemical nitrate into ammonia is a feasible and promising wastewater recovery strategy. In this work, a ternary Cu 2 O/CoO/FeOOH heterogeneous structure catalyst with rich interface has been reasonably designed. In the complex system, the electron-rich Cu active center enhances the adsorption of nitric acid radical ions, while Co and Fe species promote the generation of reacted hydrogen (H*) intermediates. The synergistic effect between multiple active sites effectively reduces the energy barrier of the eight-electron nitrate reduction reaction. Therefore, the optimized catalyst achieved a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.75% and a significant NH 3 yield of 9.83 mg h −1 cm −2 under the condition at −0.4 V vs. RHE. This study confirms the key role of interface electronic regulation in improving the electroreduction performance of nitrates, and provides a simple and reliable strategy for the rational design and construction of high-efficiency heterogeneous structural electrocatalysts. The construction of catalytic membranes with excellent catalytic efficiency and stability has become a desirable strategy for the treatment of refractory organic wastewater. In this work, polyetherimide/hydroxyl iron oxide catalyst (PEI@FeOOH) catalytic membrane with high performance was developed by of electrospinning and in-situ growth methods for reduction of methyl orange (MO). The immobilization of FeOOH by PEI nanofiber membrane could realize dynamic Fenton catalysis. In the presence of H 2 O 2 (0.62 mM), the PEI@FeOOH catalytic membrane could remove 90 % MO after 4 h, which was much higher than that under static catalysis. This was mainly because that the change of catalytic mode decreased the apparent activation energy of catalysis reaction. Furthermore, the PEI@FeOOH membrane also exhibited good catalytic performance for orange G, methylene blue , phenol and iprofloxacin antibiotics, and excellent reusability. More importantly, benefit from the light absorption property of FeOOH, the PEI@FeOOH membrane exhibited superior catalytic performance in static process when the simulated sunlight was introduced. The synergistic effect of Fenton process and photo-catalysis made the catalytic performance of membrane even higher than that of dynamic Fenton process, providing guidance for dye wastewater treatment .

Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membranes have aroused much research enthusiasm because of their good anti-fouling ability for the treatment of oil-contaminated water. However, such anti-fouling membranes inevitably suffer from fouling during long-term use. Thus, anti-fouling membranes with excellent self-cleaning performance, fast and superior flux recovery are still greatly required. Herein, the green tannic acid (TA)-Fe(III) complex is first assembled onto the polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PVDF) surface and followed by the in situ mineralization of β-FeOOH to fabricate the PVDF/TA/β-FeOOH membrane for efficient oil/water emulsion separation. The resultant membrane exhibits superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity with underwater OCA of above 155° for various oils. Importantly, the as-prepared membrane shows fast (within 10 min) and excellent flux recovery (over 98%) attributed to the robust photo-Fenton catalytic activity of β-FeOOH. Moreover, the membrane also displays high separation efficiency (>99.1%) and high flux (1426.8–2106.2 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) for a series of oil/water emulsions. This study highlights a new direction in the development of photo-Fenton self-cleaning membranes with fast and robust flux recovery for efficient oil/water emulsion separation.

In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

Graphical Water splitting : A self-supporting nickel phosphide electrode with the decoration of FeOOH species is successfully prepared as superior bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting in an alkaline medium. Utilizing non-noble metal-based materials to design highly active and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts play a vital role in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for the overall water splitting. Herein, a self-supporting nickel phosphide electrode with the decoration of FeOOH species is successfully prepared by a simple electrodeposition and maceration drying process. This kind of electrode exhibits superior bifunctional activity for both HER and OER. Benefiting from the more exposed catalytic active sites, open hierarchical structure, and better reaction kinetics. At the current density of 100 mA cm −2 , the optimal Ni 2 P−FeOOH/NF delivers the small overpotentials of 200 mV and 235 mV for HER and OER in an alkaline solution, respectively. After further assembling into the electrolyzer, the Ni 2 P−FeOOH/NF-based device shows a lower cell voltage of 1.5 V and 1.66 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , along with superior stability. This work outlines a promising strategy for the facile preparation of self-supporting electrodes for practical application in hydrogen generation by overall water splitting.

A grape-like FeOOH-Nb 2 O 5 -CoO heterostructure engineered on the DBD plasma-modified Co foam for OER. • Plasma treatment endows a special 3D physio-chemical interface for seawater splitting . • The overpotential of FeOOH- Nb 2 O 5 -CoO/PCF for transferring j 1000 is only372 mV 1 M KOH. • DFT calculations disclose the FeOOH-CoO heterointerface lowers the OER energy barrier. Seawater electrolysis represents an attractive approach for producing the high-purity hydrogen. Nevertheless, the high concentration of chloride ions (Cl − ) in seawater leads to severe corrosion of electrodes, posing a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of seawater splitting for green hydrogen generation. Herein, a grape-like iron-niobium-cobalt metal oxide (FeOOH-Nb 2 O 5 -CoO/PCF) is in-situ engineered on the cobalt foam which is modified by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma (PCF). Noted that the plasma treatment endows the PCF substrate with critical properties for engineering electrocatalysis: the obtained 3D hierarchical architecture facilitates electrolyte access, the caused interfacial bonding ensures an excellent electrocatalytic durability, and the enhanced surface chemistry accelerates gas bubble release. The optimized FeOOH-Nb 2 O 5 -CoO/PCF electrode achieves an industrial-level current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 372 mV in 1 M KOH, and merely 317 mV for transferring a current density of 100 mA cm −2 ( j 100 ) in an aggressive alkaline seawater. Moreover, the FeOOH-Nb 2 O 5 -CoO/PCF maintains an ultra stability for 100 h (1 M KOH) and 317 h (alkaline seawater) with chronoamperometry ( I-t ) tests. Based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the constructed heterointerface between CoO and FeOOH phase effectively modulates the electronic configuration of catalyst and lowers the energy barrier of the rate-determining step with the synergistic effect of Nb 2 O 5 , thereby synergistically promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This work offers a viable pathway for designing highly active and stable electrocatalysts fitting for seawater splitting. A grape-like FeOOH-Nb 2 O 5 -CoO heterostructure is in-situ hydrothermally fabricated on DBD-plasma-etched cobalt foam for a high efficient OER wtih alkaline seawater. In 1 M KOH, it achieves 372 mV at an industrial-level 1000 mA cm −2 with a Tafel slope of 53.8 mV dec −1 . In an alkaline seawater, it requires only 317/359/391 mV at 100/300/500 mA cm −2 . At 500 mA cm −2 , a long-term stability reaches 100 h in 1 M KOH and 317 h in seawater. DFT confirms interfacial Co sites dominate OER activity, while Nb 2 O 5 provides anti-Cl − corrosion protection. This work offers a DBD-assisted pathway for engineering electrocatalysts to achieve a robust seawater electrolysis. Download: Download high-res image (177KB) Download: Download full-size image

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a core technology for green hydrogen production, with the slow kinetics of the OER and insufficient bifunctional catalytic activity being the primary bottlenecks. FeOOH exhibits excellent OER activity, but its application is limited by low electrical conductivity and high energy barriers for intermediate formation. In this study, a two-step hydrothermal method combined with an interfacial electronic regulation strategy was employed to construct, for the first time, a ternary heterostructured bifunctional electrocatalyst FeOOH-ReS 2 -Ni 3 S 2 /NF, achieving precise coupling of multiple active phases and efficient regulation of interfacial electrons. Structural characterization confirms that the catalyst exhibits a composite morphology combining nanospheres and three-dimensionally interwoven nanosheets, with uniform distribution of Fe, Ni, Re, and S elements, forming tight heterojunctions between components. The introduction of FeOOH induces strong electronic interactions with ReS 2 -Ni 3 S 2 , triggering lattice strain and bond tension regulation, which optimizes the catalyst’s electronic structure and lays the foundation for rapid interfacial charge transfer. Electrochemical testing indicates that in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, the catalyst exhibits a HER overpotential as low as 72 mV (Tafel slope 90 mV dec -1 ) at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , while the OER overpotential is only 238 mV (Tafel slope 35.8 mV dec -1 ); the full-water-splitting cell achieved a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at just 1.53 V and operated stably for 100 hours. This study provides a new approach to interface regulation for the design of highly efficient non-precious-metal bifunctional full-water-splitting catalysts. FeOOH has attracted great research attention in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because of its low cost, natural abundance, environmental friendliness, and high intrinsic activity. However, the practical utilization of FeOOH is seriously restricted by its inherent poor conductivity. Herein, the hybridization of FeOOH with N-doped porous carbon (NPC) nanosheets derived from metal–organic framework (MOF) supported on Ni foam (NF) has been proved to be an effective approach to improve the electrocatalytic OER activity of FeOOH. The MOF-derived porous NPC nanosheets have a unique interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) network architecture, which can not only serve as a highly conductive layer to promote electron transfer but also improve the utilization rate of FeOOH and facilitate mass transport. Owing to the advantages in structure and composition, the as-obtained FeOOH@C/NF exhibits significantly enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward OER in alkaline media, with a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 182 mV, a small Tafel slope of 27.9 mV dec–1, and excellent durability.
