Shuang Liu,Ying Wang,Taoli Jiang,Song Jin,Muhammad Sajid,Zuodong Zhang,Jingwen Xu,Yanpeng Fan,Xiaoyang Wang,Jinghao Chen,Zaichun Liu,Xinhua Zheng,Kai Zhang,Qingshun Nian,Zhengxin Zhu,Qia Peng,Touqeer Ahmad,Ke Li,Wei Chen

The development of efficient, stable, and low-cost bifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) is critical to promote the application of hydrogen gas batteries in large scale energy storage systems. Here we demonstrate a non-noble metal high-entropy alloy grown on Cu foam (NNM-HEA@CF) as a self-supported catalytic electrode for nickel-hydrogen gas (Ni-H2) batteries. Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the NNM-HEA catalyst greatly facilitates the HER/HOR catalytic process through the optimized electronic structures of the active sites. The assembled Ni-H2 battery with NNM-HEA@CF as the anode shows excellent rate capability and exceptional cycling performance of over 1800 h without capacity decay at an areal capacity of 15 mAh cm–2. Furthermore, a scaled-up Ni-H2 battery fabricated with an extended capacity of 0.45 Ah exhibits a high cell-level energy density of ∼109.3 Wh kg–1. Moreover, its estimated cost reaches as low as ∼107.8 $ kWh–1 based on all key components of electrodes, separator and electrolyte, which is reduced by more than 6 times compared to that of the commercial Pt/C-based Ni-H2 battery. This work provides an approach to develop high-efficiency non-noble metal-based bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen batteries in large-scale energy storage applications.

Scalable synthesis of hcp ruthenium-molybdenum nanoalloy as a robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution/oxidation

Zhen Zhang,Haijun Liu,Liwen Ni,Zhi-Liang Zhao,Hui Li

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic process of water splitting, and its reverse, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), is the anodic process of an H 2 -O 2 fuel cell; both play important roles in the development of hydrogen energy. The rational design and scalable fabrication of low-cost and efficient bifunctional catalysts for the HER/HOR are highly desirable. Herein, ultrasmall Mo-Ru nanoalloy (Mo 0.5 Ru 3 and MoRu 3 ) particles uniformly distributed on mesoporous carbon (MPC) were successfully synthesized by a simple method that is easy to scale up for mass production. After the incorporation of Mo atoms, the as-prepared Mo 0.5 Ru 3 and MoRu 3 nanoalloys maintain a hexagonal-close-packed crystal structure. In acidic media, Mo 0.5 Ru 3 exhibits excellent Pt-like HER and HOR activity, as well as good stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the H adsorption free energy (Δ G H* ) on the Mo 0.5 Ru 3 (0 0 1) surface (−0.09 eV) is much closer to zero than that of metallic Ru (−0.22 eV), which contributes to the enhanced catalytic activity. In alkaline media, Mo 0.5 Ru 3 also presents outstanding HER and HOR activity, even significantly outperforming Pt/C. The DFT results confirm that optimal binding energies with H* and OH* intermediate species, and low energy barriers in the water dissociation and formation steps, efficiently accelerate the alkaline HER/HOR kinetics of Mo 0.5 Ru 3 . This study provides a new avenue for the scalable fabrication of high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for the HER and HOR in both acidic and alkaline media.

Rational construction of Pt/PtTex interface with optimal intermediate adsorption energy for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiadong Chen,Minkai Qin,Shuangxiu Ma,Ruxue Fan,Xiaozhong Zheng,Shanjun Mao,Chunhong Chen,Yong Wang

Increasing OH* adsorption to promote water dissociation while reducing H* adsorption to accelerate hydrogen generation kinetics is an effective solution to further improve the HER activity of Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we have successfully constructed a Pt/PtTe x heterogeneous catalysis interface by electrochemical activation of PtTe 2 nanorods (NRs). The reduction of H* adsorption and significant increase of OH* adsorption was observed on Pt/PtTe x heterojunction via cyclic voltammetry method. Theoretical calculations indicate that Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) of H* is closer to 0.00 eV and ΔG of OH* decreased from 1.36 eV of Pt (111) to −0.40 eV of Pt/PtTe x , which reinforces the experimental results. The rational modulation of adsorbed intermediates endows Pt/PtTe x NRs with exceptionally lower Tafel slopes of 16 and 23 mV dec −1 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH electrolytes, which is among the best reported HER electrocatalysts.

Size-controllable Rh2P nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide toward highly hydrogen production

Hongqiang Xin,Lan Sun,Yiwei Zhao,Yuanjiang Lv,Qiaomei Luo,Shengwu Guo,Danyang Li,Ce Mu,Bo Huang,Fei Ma

Abundant of defective regions and oxygen-containing groups on graphene oxide (GO) could promote the nucleation and growth of metallic nanoparticles . In this work, the composite catalyst is synthesized by pyrolysis of the mixture powder of GO and rhodium organometallic reactant at 900 °C, Ar atmosphere and low pressure, in which dispersive Rh 2 P nanoparticles are uniformly attached on reduced graphene oxide (Rh 2 P/RGO). The sizes of Rh 2 P nanoparticles are controllable by adjusting the mass proportion of reactants. For the optimized size of Rh 2 P nanoparticles at 6.0 nm, only 11.7 and 10.3 mV of the overpotentials are required at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively, exhibiting superior HER activity over the commercial Pt/C. Theoretical calculations indicate that the hydrogen adsorption free energy of Rh 2 P/RGO composites is close to zero, and Bede charge analysis confirms the accelerated electron transport between the RGO and Rh 2 P. Therefore, the introduction of RGO substrate could not only promote a uniform distribution and tunable size of Rh 2 P NPs, but also be advantageous to the electron transport from RGO to Rh 2 P NPs, and a favorable H 2 evolution during the HER process. This work provides a facile strategy to control the size of metal phosphide nanoparticles on RGO for the design of advanced HER electrocatalysts .

Host dependent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Ni/TiO2 composites

Peng Zhou,Shuhua Wang,Guangyao Zhai,Xingshuai Lv,Yuanyuan Liu,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Hefeng Cheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

Ni/TiO2 as a classic system has been widely studied in the traditional catalysis field including the water-gas shift reaction and selective oxidation/hydrogenation. However, in terms of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), there is still a lack of systematic research on the actual synergistic promotion effect on the performance, and the influence of the host material on the electronic interaction between Ni and TiO2 is still unclear. Herein, we synthesized a series of Ni/TiO2 composites with different forms and tested the relevant HER performance. The results show that Ni/TiO2 exhibits much better HER performance than pure Ni and there is one type of electronic interaction between Ni and TiO2 in the composite with different forms, that is, electrons transfer from Ni to TiO2. However, the interaction strength is host dependent, and the composite with Ni as the host displays the strongest interaction, and therefore the best HER performance (46 mV at 10 mA cm−2).

Three-dimensional open nano-netcage electrocatalysts for efficient pH-universal overall water splitting

Zhuang Zewen,Wang Yu,Xu Cong-Qiao,Liu Shoujie,Chen Chen,Peng Qing,Zhuang Zhongbin,Xiao Hai,Pan Yuan,Lu Siqi,Yu Rong,Cheong Weng-Chon,Cao Xing,Wu Konglin,Sun Kaian,Wang Yu,Wang Dingsheng,Li Jun,Li Yadong

High-efficiency water electrolysis is the key to sustainable energy. Here we report a highly active and durable RuIrO x ( x  ≥ 0) nano-netcage catalyst formed during electrochemical testing by in-situ etching to remove amphoteric ZnO from RuIrZnO x hollow nanobox. The dispersing-etching-holing strategy endowed the porous nano-netcage with a high exposure of active sites as well as a three-dimensional accessibility for substrate molecules, thereby drastically boosting the electrochemical surface area (ECSA). The nano-netcage catalyst achieved not only ultralow overpotentials at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER; 12 mV, pH = 0; 13 mV, pH = 14), but also high-performance overall water electrolysis over a broad pH range (0 ~ 14), with a potential of mere 1.45 V (pH = 0) or 1.47 V (pH = 14) at 10 mA cm −2 . With this universal applicability of our electrocatalyst, a variety of readily available electrolytes (even including waste water and sea water) could potentially be directly used for hydrogen production.

Construction of an efficient bifunctional amorphous MoOx electrocatalyst for HER/UOR reactions through ruthenium doping-induced electronic structure modulation

Guidong Xu,Shiyi Liu,Yanshuo Hui,Shuo Geng

Electrochemical water splitting represents a sustainable pathway for hydrogen production. However, its widespread application is hindered by the high cost of platinum-based catalysts required for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the substantial energy input associated with the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a theoretical potential as low as 0.37   V vs. RHE, presents an energetically favourable alternative. Nevertheless, its practical implementation is challenged by a complex six-electron transfer process, necessitating highly active catalysts. While state-of-the-art Ru- or Mo-based catalysts often depend on intricate synthetic routes or the construction of crystalline heterostructures, this study introduces a distinct strategy: the fabrication of Ru-doped amorphous molybdenum oxide (Ru-MoO x /NF) via a facile one-step electrodeposition method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong electronic interactions between Ru and the amorphous framework termed “electron-amorphous synergy” which effectively tunes the electronic structure and markedly enhances catalytic activity toward both HER and UOR. Remarkably, when employed in a dual-electrode urea-assisted electrolytic system, the catalyst achieves a current density of 10   mA   cm -2 at an exceptionally low cell voltage of 1.323   V and maintains stable performance over 30   hours at this current density, surpassing numerous previously reported bifunctional catalysts. This work highlights the great potential of manipulating the amorphous structure through atomic doping as a simple yet effective strategy, distinct from crystalline heterointerface engineering, for designing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Dandelion-like V–CoP nanoarchitectures derived from MOFs: boosting the HER via enhanced water dissociation at industrial current densities

Wenxuan Zheng,Lin Gao,Mingsong Fan,Zhiyu Dou,Lili Cui,E. Jin

To address the sluggish kinetics and limited current density in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), we designed and synthesized dandelion-like V-doped CoP anchored on carbon cloth (V–CoP-X) via a MOF-derived strategy involving hydrothermal growth and subsequent phosphidation. By precisely controlling the V content in the MOF precursor, we achieve tunable morphologies of V–CoP materials. Experimental analyses reveal that Lewis acid sites of V promote electron transfer and adjust the d-band centers of V–CoP. According to the results of experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the V-doped CoP lowers the water dissociation energy in alkaline media and optimizes the adsorption energy for H* (ΔGH*). These synergistic effects accelerate water dissociation kinetics as well as optimize adsorption and desorption behavior of H*, leading to improved HER activity in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4. As a result, the optimal V–CoP electrode exhibits exceptional HER performance in diverse electrolytes, requiring low overpotentials of 69, 63 and 89 mV to obtain 10 mA cm−2 as well as 212, 254 and 401 mV at 500 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, 1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Remarkably, V-doped CoP possesses excellent long-term stability at large current density. This work presents a high-performance HER electrocatalyst while providing fundamental insights into the role of V doping in enhancing reaction kinetics.

Molecular engineering of separator enables zwitterion migration channels for corrosion-resistant, HER-inhibiting and dendrite-free zinc metal anode

Qiying Zhang,Jingbo Xie,Yingyu Pan,Liyong Tian,Yancheng Wu,Ningbo Yi,Chunping Ma,Yangfan Zhang,Gaoyi Xie,Yingpeng Wu

An AmPAM based electrospun separator is first proposed for an ultra-stable Zn metal anode through molecular engineering. • Numerous zwitterion migration channels are formed through electrostatic attraction for highly efficient ion transport. • The Zn|Zn cells using the AmPAM separators achieve unprecedented ultra-low polarization voltage and exceptional lifespans. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-based batteries hold great potential for next-generation energy storage devices, but face three interdependent challenges of dendrite, HER, and corrosion in the Zn metal anode toward practical application. To simultaneously address all three challenges, an amphoteric polyacrylamide (AmPAM) based electrospun separator is first proposed for an ultra-stable Zn metal anode through molecular engineering. The well-designed AmPAM chains with side-chain sulfonate and quaternary ammonium groups in appropriate density form numerous zwitterion migration channels through electrostatic attraction for highly efficient ion transport, thereby leading to negligible Zn 2+ concentration gradient and thus homogenized Zn 2+ flux. The Zn 2+ ion also undergoes rapid desolvation due to a synergistic effect between the hydrogen-bond interaction of amide groups and the electrostatic interaction of sulfonate groups, resulting in inhibited water reactivity and suppressed H 2 O-induced side reactions. Significantly, the Zn|Zn cells using the AmPAM separators achieve unprecedented ultra-low polarization voltage of ∼5.0 mV, exceptional lifespans up to 3000 h at 1 mA cm −2 /1 mAh cm −2 and even over 500 h at 10 mA cm −2 /10 mAh cm −2 , accompanied by reduced corrosion current density (0.15 mA cm −2 ), negligibly small HER current density (−0.0002 mA cm −2 ) and dendrite-free Zn deposition, which are superior to those of the conventional GF separator. Furthermore, the Zn|MnO 2 full battery delivers satisfactory rate performance and long-term cycling stability with capacity retention of 91% after 1000 cycles. This work offers a fresh insight into corrosion-resistant, HER-inhibiting and dendrite-free zinc metal anode from separator molecular engineering. An amphoteric polyacrylamide based electrospun separator with zwitterion migration channels is first proposed to simultaneously address all three challenges of dendrite, HER, and corrosion for an ultra-stable Zn anode through molecular engineering. Zn-Co Needle-Grass-Shaped Nanostructure In Situ-Grown on Porous Nickle Foam As an Electrocatalyst for Efficient HER

Xiao Linfeng,Wang Xinyue,Fu Lichun,Deng Wenqiang,Liang Boyu,Li Runrun,Hong Yan,Du Jie,Zhou Zhenyuan,Liao Runhua

Due to the low cost and abundant reserves of transition metals, there is an urgent imperative for the design and fabrication of transition metal electrocatalysts to expedite hydrogen production through the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We present a self-supported needle-grass-shaped Zn-Co (ZC) composition on porous nickel foam (NF) via conventional hydrothermal synthesis. The Zn-Co/NF electrodes demonstrate remarkably efficient HER performance in 1.0M KOH alkaline solution. Specifically, the ZC (1:4)/NF catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 171.9 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 owing to the synergistic effect arising from the combination of Zn-Co composition and Ni layers. Furthermore, stability tests demonstrate that the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) curves of the ZC (1:4)/NF catalyst exhibits only marginal changes even after undergoing 1000 consecutive cycles at a scan rate of 20 mV s −1 . This study presents an innovative approach for the design and fabrication of highly efficient electrocatalysts for HER. Graphical

Constructing Cu2S/amorphous/Cu–Ni–Mo heterostructure for enhanced HER in neutral chloride media via atomic-scale interfacial engineering

Liandong Li,Ziqi Qiao,Bing Lin,Hailong Zhang,Yingying Wang,Zhe Sun,Yiping Hu,Denghao Ouyang,Shiyu Li,Hangzhou Wang,Junlei Tang,Caineng Zou

Electrolysis of neutral saline wastewater/seawater enables sustainable hydrogen production but faces sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics and poor durability in chloride-rich media. Herein, a novel Cu 2 S/Amorphous/Cu–Ni–Mo heterostructure electrocatalyst, prepared by electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition (ALD), was introduced to address these challenges. The electrode was synthesized by electrodepositing a Cu–Ni–Mo coating onto a stainless steel substrate, followed by in-situ sulfurization using ALD technology to form an amorphous layer, yielding a heterostructure with optimized interfacial properties. This heterostructure electrode exhibited an overpotential of 63.29 mV at −10 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation at −100 mA cm −2 for over 180 h in 0.5 mol/L NaCl +1 mol/L phosphate buffered saline (PBS). A 10 cm × 10 cm electrode was successfully fabricated using this scalable method, which exhibited uniform morphology and stability exceeding 240 h. This work advances HER performance and scalability in neutral environments, facilitating industrial-scale electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

Gao Pingping,Wu Shiwen,Gao Meilian,Chen Lu,Ren Zhongping,Lei Ting,Fu Wen

Hydrogen production via water electrolysis has garnered significant attention as a pivotal technology for green energy conversion. In this work, cheap metal ions copper and iron are used as catalyst raw materials to develop high efficiency and low cost HER catalyst. Copper-doped iron phosphide supported on carbon paper (Cu-FeP/CP) is synthesized via a simple two-step process involving hydrothermal growth followed by high-temperature phosphidation. The morphology and electrochemical performance of iron phosphide catalysts with controlled copper doping are investigated. A nano-needle-like Cu-FeP/CP structure with 3% Cu doping exhibits a high surface area, providing abundant active sites, while Cu-induced charge redistribution and Fe-Cu synergy further enhance its intrinsic catalytic activity. HER catalytic performances results reveal Cu-FeP/CP-3% electrode exhibits low overpotentials of 71 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 123 mV in 1 M KOH to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with small Tafel slopes of 49 mV dec −1 and 72 mV dec −1 , respectively. Additionally, Cu-FeP/CP-3% shows low charge transfer resistance and stable HER performance over 24 h. The result provides new insights into the design and fabrication of highly efficient and cost-effective HER catalysts. Graphical
