Simultaneous removal of arsenate and arsenite in water using a novel functional halloysite nanotube composite

Yu Jiexuan,Zhang Kegang,Duan Xuelei,Zhao Changxian,Wei Xiaoyang,Guo Qi,Yuan Chun-Gang

This work aims at exploring a novel environment-friendly nanomaterial based on natural clay minerals for arsenic removal in aqueous samples. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were selected as the substrate with Mn oxides loaded on the surface to enhance its arsenic adsorption ability and then grafted onto the SiO 2 -coated Fe 3 O 4 microsphere to get a just enough magnetic performance facilitating the material’s post-treatment. The prepared composite (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs) was extensively characterized by various instruments including Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Batch experiments were carried out to get the optimum test conditions for arsenic adsorption by the composite, including pH, loading amount of Mn oxides, adsorbent dosage, and the co-existing ions. The adsorption of As III and As V on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs were both well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model revealing the chemisorption between arsenic and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs. The adsorption process of As III and As V were both endothermic and spontaneous displayed by the thermodynamic study. The capacities of the prepared composite are 3.28 mg g −1 for As III and 3.52 mg g −1 for As V , respectively, which are comparable or better than those of many reported materials in the references. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) tests were carried out to access the secondary environmental risk of the composite and showed that it was quite environmentally stable and can be safely disposed. The composite was successfully applied in environmental water samples indicating its great potential applicability in future.

Preparation and characterization of novel thin film composite forward osmosis membrane with halloysite nanotube interlayer

Bohao Cheng,Yifan Wang,Xiaowen Wu,Minghao Fang,Xin Min,Zhaohui Huang,Yan'gai Liu,Ruiyu Mi

In this study, the electrospun polyacrylonitrile (ePAN) fiber mats were used as support layer and natural mineral-halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was used to construct the interlayer. Polydopamine modification was utilized to enhance the hydrophilicity of ePAN substrates and dispersibility of HNTs. The mHNTs interlayer effectively minified the surface pore size of substrates providing a better interface for interfacial polymerization forming an integrated and thin PA selective layers. Compared to the unmodified membranes, the water flux of the optimized membrane with mHNTs interlayer about 61.60% and 79.70% higher and the reverse salt flux of which was 38.95% and 45.08% lower in AL-FS mode and AL-DS mode respectively. These results suggested that introducing halloysite nanotube interlayer is an effective, and low-cost way to fabricate high-performance FO membrane .

Polyglutamic Acid-Grafted Halloysite-Modified Collagen-Sodium Alginate Oxide Composite Membrane for Wound Dressing Application

Changkai Yang,Yanping Huang,Nianhua Dan,Yining Chen

Introducing nanomaterials is an effective strategy for enhancing the mechanical properties of collagen (COL) composite membranes. In this work, we obtained a carboxylated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) nanomaterial by grafting a macromolecular substance polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) on the surface of HNTs, which was coblended with collagen matrix to obtain a collagen-based composite membrane with good mechanical properties under the cross-linking effect of sodium alginate oxide (ADA). We investigated that the γ-PGA-grafted HNTs have the potential to improve and enhance the tensile strength and elongation at the break of the collagen membranes. A study of contact angle of composite membranes revealed the γ-PGA-grafted HNTs inhibited the negative effects of HNTs on the hydrophilicity of the COL-ADA membrane. The biological properties of carboxylated HNTs composite-modified collagen-sodium alginate oxide composite membrane (COL-c-ADA) were evaluated in vivo and virto. Polyglutamic acid-grafted HNTs composite-modified collagen-sodium alginate oxide composite membrane material is nontoxic and can promote cell proliferation and migration to promote wound healing.

Selective decorating Ag and MnOx nanoparticles on halloysite and used as micromotor for bacterial killing

Jian Wang,Shengyu Wu,Wenjing Zhang,Hongchao Wang,Peiping Zhang,Bo Jin,Cundi Wei,Ruifeng Guo,Shiding Miao

Threats of bacterial infection represent one of the most persistent issues of public health, and efficient bacteria killing materials are to be developed. Taking inspirations from nature, a new class of halloysite (Hal)-based bacteria killing materials (MnO x -Ag/Hal) that were able to self-move in aqueous solution was prepared. The asymmetric halloysite tubes are used as substrates. Silver (Ag) nanoparticles are loaded both in the lumen and on the external surface, and manganese oxide (MnO x ) was distributed on the outside walls. Fuel with low concentration of H 2 O 2 , the catalyst Ag and MnO x would decompose H 2 O 2 into gas bubbles (O 2 ), and the back-thrust bubbles provided forward forces for jet movement, which improved the antibacterial efficiency. The fabricated MnO x -Ag/Hal exhibited powerful self-propelled motion with velocity of 18 ± 4 μm/s achieved at 0.2 wt% H 2 O 2 . The MnO x -Ag/Hal generated Ag + ions and highly reactive oxygen species that could efficiently kill E. coli. By coupling the antibacterial capabilities of H 2 O 2 , Ag and highly reactive oxygen species with powerful self-propulsion, the prepared micromotors were capable of killing 97% of E. coli within 2.0 min, which was threefold as the counterpart of MnO x -Ag/Hal in the absence of H 2 O 2 that cannot move efficiently. The biocompatible micromotors offered an encouraging strategy for rapid bacteria killing in clinical and environment fields.

A Thermally Self-healing and Recyclable Polyurethane by Incorporating Halloysite Nanotubes via In Situ Polymerization

Huo Yanqiu,Ge Huan,Lin Changhong,Ying Puyou,Huang Min,Zhang Ping,Yang Tao,Liu Gang,Wu Jianbo,Levchenko Vladimir

The development of polymer-based composites with self-healing and recyclable capability has attracted the attention of several researchers for resource recycling and environment protection. In this work, Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) reinforced polyurethane materials (PU) with self-healing and recyclable ability were constructed by in situ polymerization method. The mechanical, thermal amd morphological properties of PU and related composites were studied. The morphology of samples fracture surface ensured the homogeneous dispersion of HNTs in the polymer matrix. Moreover, thermal stability was improved with the incorporation of the HNTs. The tensile test showed strength increased with HNTs content increased. The tensile strength of composites increases from 23.38 to 34.92 MPa at 2 wt% HNTs. Therefore, the designed strategy provides a simple approach for preparing high mechanical properties, reprocessing and self-healing ability polyurethane composites.

A flexible N-doped carbon-nanofiber film reinforced by halloysite nanotubes(HNTs) for adsorptive desulfurization

Xiao-Lu Sun,Zan Liu,Zhi-Lin Cheng

This report introduced the facile synthesis of the carbon-nanofiber films reinforced by halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) via electrospinning. The HNTs-reinforced N-doped carbon-nanofiber films (PAN/HNTs-CNFs) possessed the higher strength and toughness while keeping the prospective adsorption capability for different sulfur compounds in oil due to the higher N doping content. The PAN/HNTs-CNFs were produced by firstly electrospinning for the HNTs-filled polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber films, followed by the high-temperature carbonization for the conversion of the polymer films into the carbon-nanofiber films with the N doping. The characterizations testified that the HNTs were capable of fulfilling the uniform and disordered dispersion in the carbon-nanofibers. For overcoming the toughness of the carbon-nanofiber film, the HNTs filling the obviously improved the mechanical performance of the carbon-nanofiber films by the pulling-out and bridging effect. Due to accessing the lipophilic and acid surface, abundant hierarchical pore structure and highly N-doping content, the PAN/HNTs-CNFs exhibited the remarkable adsorption performances for thiophene, benzothiophene, and dibenzothiophene (46.73 mg S/g, 38.4 mg S/g and 35.03 mg S/g for 800 ppm sulfur model oil), especially being suitable to the adsorption of thiophene. Furthermore, the study on the adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherms, and thermodynamics of thiophene over the PAN/HNTs-CNFs were conducted to discuss the adsorption mechanism.

Laccase-immobilized tannic acid-mediated surface modification of halloysite nanotubes for efficient bisphenol-A degradation

Liting Zhang,Wen Tang,Tonghao Ma,Lina Zhou,Chenggong Hui,Xiaoli Wang,Ping Wang,Changai Zhang,Chao Chen

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have been pursued as promising carriers for enzyme immobilization, but the lack of functional groups severely limits their applications. Herein, we reported a simple tannic acid (TA)-mediated surface modification strategy for the fabrication of HNT-based efficient enzyme immobilization supports. Particularly, TA was first self-polymerized and deposited onto the surface of HNTs to form a thin active film via a mussel-inspired method, and the model enzyme laccase was directly conjugated via the Michael addition and/or Schiff base condensation between quinone groups on poly(tannic acid) layer surfaces and exposed amine groups on laccase surfaces. Under the optimum conditions, this newly fabricated support retained good enzyme-loading and activity recovery properties with 197.9 mg protein per gram of support and 55.4% of activity recovery being achieved. In addition, this immobilized laccase was less influenced by pH, temperature, and inhibitor changes and exhibited higher storage stability than free laccases as more than 70% of initial activity was retained by the immobilized laccase, while less than 30% was retained for free laccase after one-month storage at 4 °C. Finally, a higher bisphenol-A (BPA) removal efficiency and more reuse cycles were demonstrated for immobilized laccases. As a result, this TA-mediated surface modification is a simple and green method for biological macromolecule immobilization on HNTs in one step.

Polyvinyl alcohol-assisted high-flux thin film nanocomposite membranes incorporated with halloysite nanotubes for nanofiltration

Lulu Jia,Xuke Zhang,Junyong Zhu,Shenzhen Cong,Jing Wang,Jindun Liu,Yatao Zhang

Nanofiltration membranes with superior separation performance are highly desired for water treatment such as desalination. To fulfil the demand for higher permeability and selectivity for thin-film composite (TFC) membranes prepared via interfacial polymerization, nanoparticles were incorporated into the polyamide layer to construct thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. However, due to the inevitable aggregation of the nanoparticles and the weak adhesion between the nanoparticles and the polymer matrix, the separation performance of the TFN membranes are still not good enough to substitute the commercial NF membrane for desalination. Herein, a PVA-assisted halloysite nanotube (HNT) TFN membrane with high separation performance was fabricated. The HNTs were modified by poly(styrene sulfonate) to obtain m-HNTs with enhanced hydrophilicity and excellent dispersibility. To avoid the loss of nanoparticles during the interfacial polymerization process, a vacuum filtration process is combined with the membrane preparation procedure. The optimal TFN-0.05 membranes showed a superior water permeability of 34.5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and Na2SO4 rejection of 97.8% at 4 bar, which is almost twice that of the pristine TFC membrane and superior to the performance of the traditional desalination membranes. This facile strategy may provide a useful guideline for the construction of highly permeable TFN membranes for desalination.

Preparation and characterization of slow-release and water-retention fertilizer based on starch and halloysite

Hongliang Wei,He Wang,Huijuan Chu,Jingjing Li

In this work, a kind of slow-release and water-retention fertilizer was fabricated by free radical copolymerization of potato starch, acrylic acid, acrylamide, and β-cyclodextrin modified by maleic anhydride, accompanying halloysite nanotubes whose cavities were enlarged by acidification and loaded with urea in advance. The fertilizer was characterized by FTIR, TGA , SEM, TEM, and XRD. Its swelling behavior in distilled water and salt solutions as well as the ability to hold water was studied by weighing method. Finally, its controlled-release behavior to urea was investigated. The results suggested the as-prepared fertilizer had good abilities to retain water and control urea release. Moreover, the addition of halloysite helped to improve the release properties of the fertilizer. The study on urea release kinetics indicated the release behavior of urea in water was controlled by its concentration, whereas the release behavior of urea in soil fitted with Fickian diffusion mechanism.

Influence of Acid Treatment on the Loading and Release Behavior of Halloysite with 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole

Xing Xuteng,Wang Jihui,Li Qiushi,Hu Wenbin

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are natural clay minerals with a tubular structure. They have attracted considerable attention as a potential nanocontainer due to their abundance, biocompatibility and nontoxicity. In this study, HNTs were handled with H2SO4 at 70 °C. The morphology and structure of these acid-treated and original HNTs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectrum (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and their specific surface area was determined by automatic gas adsorption analyzer. The loading efficiency and release behavior of acid-treated HNTs for 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) were investigated by UV-vis spectrophotometer. Results show that acid-treated HNTs retained their tubular structure, but their internal diameter expanded by 35–37 nm after 32 h of acid treatment. After 72 h of acid treatment, HNTs can be transferred into amorphous silica nanotubes. Moreover, the specific surface area of these HNTs samples initially increased with the increase in acid treatment time but then started to decrease after 32 h. The specific surface area of acid-treated HNTs at 32 h can reach 251.6 m2/g, which was much higher than that for untreated HNTs (55.3 m2/g). In addition, the loading capacity of acid-treated HNTs can reach 32.1% for HNTs-32, which is about three times higher than that of original HNTs. The acid treatment has slight effect on the release behavior.

La2O3 media enhanced electrons transfer for improved CeVO4@halloysite nanotubes photocatalytic activity for removing tetracycline

Jingru Guan,Jinze Li,Zhefei Ye,Dongyao Wu,Chongyang Liu,Huiqin Wang,Changchang Ma,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

A series of La 2 O 3 /CeVO 4 @halloysite nanotubes composites were successfully fabricated by the hydrothermal method. The La 2 O 3 /CeVO 4 @halloysite nanotubes composites display outstanding photocatalytic activity for removing tetracycline (TC) solution under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm). After irradiation 60 min, an optimized La 2 O 3 /CeVO 4 @halloysite nanotube composite exhibited a high photocatalytic activity (87.1%), which is 3.89 times higher than that of raw CeVO 4 (22.4%). The improvement of ternary composites performance is attributed to the Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ pairs in CeVO 4 . Besides, constructing heterojunctions between La 2 O 3 and CeVO 4 can inhibit the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes, which is ascribed to the La 3+ as electron trap to enhance the charge transfer. According to the trapper experiments and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) analysis, the h + and •O 2− are major reactive species during the degradation. In addition, the oxygen vacancies are in the ternary photocatalyssts. The photocatalytic degradation intermediates of the solution were identified by High performance liquid chromatography-Mass spectra (HPLC-MS).

Halloysite nanotubes coated 3D printed PLA pattern for guiding human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) orientation

Fan Wu,Jingqi Zheng,Zhixiong Li,Mingxian Liu

Three-dimensional (3D) printed polymer scaffolds can build engineered tissue constructs with complex and hierarchical structures, mechanical and biological heterogeneity. However, the interactions between the scaffolds and cells should be optimally designed for their practical application. In this work, 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) pattern was functionalized by a polydopamine (PDA) interlayer to firmly bond the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the surfaces of the PLA pattern for guiding cell orientation. A series of 3D printed PLA patterns with different stripe widths were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), polarized light microscopy (POM), 3D optical profiler and so on. The successful introduction of HNTs on PLA pattern was verified by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The HNTs coating could effectively improve roughness and hydrophilicity of PLA pattern. In addition, in vitro human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) culture experiments suggested that 3D printed PLA patterns with different strip widths exhibited different ability to induce cell orientation. The smaller the stripe width of the PLA pattern, the more suitable for cell orientation. When the layer height was set to 0.05 mm, the effect of inducing cell orientation was optimal. Meanwhile, the 3D printed PLA pattern with HNTs coating was more suitable for the adhesion and proliferation of cells. This works provides a general routine for improving the cell affinity of 3D printed PLA structure by the simple coating of nanoparticles, which shows the promising application in cell culture scaffolds, wound healing materials, and biosensors.
